“Miss Lauren, sorry to keep you waiting.”
Lauren hurried forward. “How did it go? Did you speak with them?”
“Everything’s handled. They’ll prepare in advance. Told us not to worry.”
Lauren let out a breath. “That’s good. They didn’t give you any trouble, did they?”
Truthfully, she’d been most worried about Butcher. The man really did eat human flesh.
“No,” Kareem replied honestly. “Everything was fine. He doesn’t seem like a bad person.”
Lauren nodded, assuming Kareem simply hadn’t run into Butcher first.
.......
Lauren escorted Kareem back to the Thunder Sect and personally delivered him to Gerald.
“Sect Leader, look—Kareem’s back safe and sound. You don’t need to worry now, right?”
Gerald gave Kareem a once-over. “Mm. Good. Everything settled?”
“Yes, Master. They’ll set up the traps ahead of time.”
“Good. Did you see your Uncle-Master?”
“Yes, Master. He’s doing fine.”
“Did he say why he’s in there?”
“No.”
Gerald frowned. “Then what did he say?”
Kareem shook his head. “Nothing much. He just nodded. Didn’t seem like he wanted to talk.”
Gerald: “…” Useless brat. “And your junior brother? What did that bald monk say?”
“Grand Master Light didn’t say anything. But my junior brother said he was sorry to you, Master. His eyes were red.”
Gerald fell silent for a long moment before sighing. “Alright. You may go.”
“Yes, Master.”
The moment Kareem left, Lauren spun around and hurried after Gerald. “Sect Leader, where did you dig up that ten-thousand-year mystic ice?”
Gerald paused. “What? You want to dig some too?”
“Yes! Cultivating on that mystic ice doubles the results. I want a piece.”
With a sigh, Gerald pulled out a blank jade slip and quickly sketched a map onto it. He handed it over, muttering, “That’s enough. At least think about Dante and the others’ feelings.”
Lauren blinked. What did that have to do with Dante?
It wasn’t until Gerald walked off that she understood. The Sect Leader was jealous.
Her cultivation speed had been absurd lately. But what could she do? That old dragon wouldn’t let her slack off. She’d rested for two days—two—and he was already pushing her again.
Master was in seclusion. Wayne was buried in his own training. Starfell Summit was so quiet it almost felt deserted.
After swallowing the Ice Spirit Fruit her master had given her, Lauren sat cross-legged on the Xuanbing Bed and entered cultivation.
The spiritual energy that exploded inside her was terrifying.
It surged through her meridians again and again, washing them clean, expanding them, before pouring into her dantian and strengthening her Nascent Soul. The Ice Spirit Fruit combined with the mystic ice bed created a frenzy of power that nearly overwhelmed her.
She didn’t notice when frost began forming along her brow. Didn’t notice when the chill spread down her neck. Didn’t notice when her entire body froze solid— Encased in a massive pillar of ice.
Inside, she remained completely unaware. Only Edmund and Briar emerged from her inner space and stood at the mouth of the cave, staring at the human popsicle in silence.
“What the hell did she eat?” Briar muttered. “That spiritual energy is insane.”
“Ice Spirit Fruit,” Edmund replied calmly.
The cold aura rapidly expanded outward. Briar shuddered, fur standing on end.
“God Venerable, I’m going to find Wayne.”
Edmund clasped his hands behind his back, unmoved. “Go.”
......
That same day, a foolish little demon showed up at the Thunder Sect’s mountain gate.
The disciples captured her almost immediately.
She chattered non-stop. One minute she was looking for her sister. The next, her grandfather. Then an ancestor.
The disciples exchanged looks. “Pah. You wild mountain demon. You think your sister or grandpa would dare come to the Thunder Sect? You’re here for revenge, aren’t you?”
Someone suggested killing her and digging out her beast core.
White burst into tears on the spot. “Waaah! I just came to deliver something! Why are you trying to dig out my beast core?!”
“What are you delivering?”
“I can’t say! It’s for the Ancestor. I can only take it out after I see the Ancestor!”
“Now there’s an ancestor too?” someone scoffed. “Who’s your ancestor?”
“My ancestor is my grandfather.”
“…What?” The crowd stared at her like she was brain-damaged. “Your ancestor is your grandfather? Did you forget to grow a brain when you transformed?”
“I evolved perfectly!” she protested indignantly. “Look! This is what unevolved looks like!”
Right in front of them, her head shifted— Into a bird’s head.
Everyone: “……” Was she actually an idiot?
“Fine. What’s your sister’s name?”
“Huh? I don’t know.”
The disciples sucked in a breath. Bear with it. “Then what’s your ancestor’s name?”
“Edmund.”
“Edmund? Who the hell is that? Anyone know him?”
“Nope.”
“Never heard of him.”
“Don’t.”
More and more disciples gathered at the gate after hearing about the stupid bird demon. The crowd thickened three, four layers deep.
Not one person recognized the name Edmund. They were convinced they’d been played. “Kill her.”
“She’s messing with us on purpose.”
“Yeah, enough bullshit. Grab her.”
White shrieked as everyone rushed forward. Seeing the situation turn ugly, she instantly transformed into a huge white bird and tried to take off.
She didn’t get far. Within seconds, she was dragged down, shoved into a cage, and locked inside.
White wailed. “Humans are so cruel! You’re all bad people! I’m going to tell my brother! Waaaah—!”
“My brother is the great demon Silent Fang of the South Sea! Are you scared now?!”
“Silent Fang? Who’s that?”
“Never heard of him.”
White’s heart shattered. But just as despair swallowed her, she sensed a familiar aura. Her eyes lit up. “Brother! Save me!”
Everyone turned.
Dante: “……” He glanced around suspiciously. Was that stupid bird calling him? No way. He didn’t even know her.
“It’s you!” White flapped wildly inside the cage. “Brother, I recognize you!”
The crowd gasped in horror. Dante was equally horrified. “Are you talking to me?”
“Yes!”
“How the hell do you recognize me? I don’t recognize you.”
“I recognize you! You and my sister went to the South Sea to borrow passage, remember?”
Dante froze. “…You’re that great demon from the South Sea?”
“No, that’s my brother. I saw you when you asked him for passage. I was inside the barrier. You couldn’t see me, but I saw you.”
The moment he heard that, Dante hurried forward and released her from the cage.
The great demon Silent Fang was rumored to have strength comparable to a Celestial Venerable. And these idiots had locked up his little sister?
“I’m sorry,” Dante said stiffly. “They didn’t know. Are you hurt?”
The cage door opened. White’s eyes turned red instantly. She burst into loud, hiccuping sobs.
Dante stood there awkwardly, not knowing what to do with his hands. The Thunder Sect disciples shifted uneasily. …They might have just fucked up.
“Hey, hey, stop crying. Let’s talk this through. What the hell are you doing here?” Dante asked, rubbing his temples.
“I’m looking for my sister!” White sniffled.
“Sister?”
“Yes! And Grandfather, too!”
Dante: “…” What kind of chaotic family tree was this? “Fine. Who’s your sister?”
“Brother, my sister is the one who went with you to borrow passage through the South Sea. Grandfather is Edmund.”
Edmund? Dante didn’t know any Edmund. But he knew exactly who she meant. She was looking for Miss Lauren.
No wonder she’d been arrested at the gate. Anyone would think she was here to stir up trouble.
Dante cleared his throat and waved at the surrounding disciples. “Alright, disperse. I recognize this little… silly bird. Uh, little white bird. She’s not here to cause trouble.”
The crowd reluctantly broke apart. Dante took White straight to Starfell Summit.
