The first shadow crossed the road before the expedition had cleared the second kiln station.

It moved so quickly that Kael saw the light disappear before he understood why. One moment the ruined western roof still held a stripe of afternoon sun, and the next the entire road dimmed beneath something vast moving above the treetops.

Sera looked up first.

"Down!"

Nobody questioned her.

Kael dropped beside Derren’s litter as a pressure wave rolled through the trees. Branches whipped violently. Loose slate tore from the damaged kiln roof and shattered across the road. One of the route workers lost his footing and fell against the wall.

Then the sound came.

Not a roar.

A wingbeat.

One.

Heavy enough that Kael felt it in his chest.

A second followed farther west.

The healer crouched over Derren instinctively.

Galahad was already moving.

"Get the litter under the eastern wall. Commander, sky. Archer, western approach. Scout, find me a covered route east. Mobile—"

Milo raised both hands.

"I have been waiting all day for a respectable assignment."

"Keep the road from becoming a graveyard."

Milo’s smile disappeared.

"Finally."

Kael looked toward him.

The change was immediate.

Milo had spent most of the expedition looking half bored, making jokes at the worst possible times and moving through danger as though inconvenience offended him personally.

Now his eyes sharpened.

Mana gathered around him.

Not slowly.

Not carefully.

The air itself changed.

Kael felt the pressure before he saw anything.

Milo stepped into the road and lifted one hand.

"Everyone behind me unless your hobbies include being flattened."

Darius looked toward the canopy.

"Something is coming."

"I noticed."

Milo spread his fingers.

Lines of pale blue mana flashed across the road.

One.

Then five.

Then dozens.

They connected between trees, stones, and ruined kiln walls until a wide geometric pattern formed around the eastern approach.

Kael stared.

He had seen barrier magic before.

This was not a wall.

It was a structure.

A layered spell.

Milo glanced sideways.

"Prince, if you ask what this does before it works, I will be offended."

Kael tightened his grip on his sword.

"I was going to ask whether you knew."

"That is worse."

The western trees exploded.

A young drake burst through first.

Then another.

Then three more behind them.

The lower hatchery failure had released more creatures onto the road, and now the returning Ash-King was driving them east.

That was the realization Kael had too late.

The young drakes were not advancing like predators.

They were fleeing.

Darius saw it too.

"They’re running from him."

The guide went pale.

"Yes."

Galahad shouted, "Do not let them reach the litter!"

Sera fired before the sentence ended.

Her first arrow struck the leading drake through the eye.

It collapsed forward.

The second leapt over it.

Sera was already drawing again.

The third launched itself into the air.

That one was Milo’s.

It crossed the first line of his spell.

The blue lattice flashed.

The drake’s body jerked sideways as if something enormous had struck it.

Then the entire spell changed direction.

Instead of stopping the creature, the mana caught its momentum and redirected it.

The drake slammed into the second one.

Both crashed against the road.

Kael stared.

Milo smiled without looking at him.

"Magic is much easier when enemies volunteer their velocity."

Then three more reached the lattice.

Milo closed his fist.

The spell contracted.

Blue lines wrapped around wings, legs, and throats.

One drake tore through the first layer.

The second layer snapped tight.

It fell.

Another tried to breathe fire.

The mana lines around its chest compressed.

Its flame discharged upward in a violent burst that scorched branches instead of the road.

The third twisted free.

Milo’s expression changed.

"Rude."

He pointed.

A sharp pulse of force hit the creature from the side and threw it directly toward Darius.

Darius cut it once.

Clean.

The drake hit the ground in two pieces.

Kael looked at Milo.

"You could do that the whole time?"

Milo finally glanced toward him.

"I was saving energy."

"For what?"

"This."

The shadow crossed them again.

Nobody laughed.

The Ash-King had circled.

Sera moved to the eastern roofline and searched for an opening through the canopy.

"I can’t see enough of it."

Darius looked upward.

"Don’t shoot unless you have a target."

"I know."

Galahad pointed toward Iris.

"Route."

Iris had already moved.

She disappeared behind the second kiln wall, crossed a narrow drainage ditch, and entered the trees east of the station.

Kael followed her with his eyes until she vanished.

The System reacted.

[DIRECTIONAL SCAN AVAILABLE]

Kael focused.

A faint map formed at the edge of his vision.

Not a complete terrain map.

More like overlapping directional indicators.

Heat.

Movement.

Elevation.

The western side was almost useless.

Too many heat sources.

Young drakes.

Burning debris.

The dead brood guard.

Something enormous above them.

The east was clearer.

One moving marker.

Iris.

Then three smaller heat sources farther north.

Kael frowned.

Not party members.

[Scan confidence: low]

Possible movement east-northeast.

He looked toward Galahad.

"Something is moving east of us."

Galahad’s eyes sharpened.

"How many?"

"Three. Maybe."

"Human?"

"I can’t tell."

Darius glanced toward him.

Kael did not explain.

He rarely had to anymore.

Galahad pointed toward Sera.

"Watch east too."

Sera shifted position immediately.

That was when Iris returned.

"Main road is bad."

Galahad looked toward her.

"How bad?"

"Too open after the next bend. Burned section. No overhead cover."

"Alternative?"

"Old drainage route southeast. Narrow. Difficult with the litter."

"Possible?"

"Yes."

"Safer?"

Iris paused.

"From above, probably."

Good enough.

Galahad turned toward the healer.

"Can the litter handle rough ground?"

The healer looked toward Derren.

"If we move slowly."

"We won’t."

The woman frowned.

"That is the problem."

Derren opened his eyes weakly.

"Just move me."

The healer looked down at him.

"You do not get to make medical decisions."

"I’m the one being carried."

"That gives you less authority."

Milo looked toward Kael.

"I like her."

Kael almost laughed.

Then the Ash-King screamed.

The station shook.

Every younger drake reacted.

The two Milo had trapped began thrashing violently.

One broke a wing trying to escape.

The guide stared west.

"It’s close."

Sera finally saw it.

Her entire posture changed.

"Sky."

Everyone looked.

The Ash-King passed through an opening above the western ridge.

Kael had seen the shadow.

He had not seen the creature.

Now he did.

For less than two seconds.

That was enough.

It was enormous.

Not dragon-sized, if the old Imperial illustrations were remotely trustworthy, but far beyond any drake Kael had imagined. Its scales were almost black, except where red-orange light glowed beneath the neck, chest, and wing joints.

The wings were broad enough to cover the road.

The tail ended in a heavy hooked structure that looked less like a natural weapon and more like a siege tool.

One horn curved backward from each side of its skull.

The Ash-King turned in the air.

Its head moved.

Sera shouted.

"Move!"

The System appeared at the same moment.

[CRITICAL WARNING]

Extreme thermal concentration detected.

Projected discharge vector: SECOND KILN STATION.

Kael’s stomach dropped.

"EVERYONE OUT!"

Galahad did not ask why.

"Move the litter!"

The workers lifted Derren.

Iris led them southeast.

The healer ran beside them.

Sera dropped from the roof.

Milo looked at his barrier.

Then west.

Then at the people retreating behind him.

His expression became deeply offended.

"Oh, that is excessive."

Darius looked toward him.

"Can your barrier hold?"

"No."

"Then move."

Milo did not.

Kael turned.

"Mobile!"

Milo threw both hands forward.

Every blue line he had created across the station snapped free.

The barrier collapsed inward.

Not failing.

Reforming.

Layer after layer folded into a single enormous arc of mana above the western road.

Kael stared.

Milo’s jaw tightened.

The easy humor disappeared.

"Go."

Darius did not.

"Mage."

Milo looked toward him.

"I said go."

The Ash-King breathed.

Fire fell from the sky.

Not a cone.

A river.

Orange-white flame tore through the canopy.

Trees ignited before the main discharge even reached them.

The heat hit Kael from fifty yards away.

Milo’s barrier met it.

For one impossible moment, the fire stopped.

The entire forest turned blue and orange.

Mana lines bent.

Cracked.

Reformed.

Milo slid backward across the road.

His boots cut lines in the dirt.

Kael stared at him.

This was not a clever minor spell.

This was power.

Serious power.

The kind that explained why Galahad had chosen him for an A-rank expedition without hesitation.

Milo shouted through clenched teeth.

"I would like everyone to know that this is deeply unpleasant!"

The first layer shattered.

Then the second.

Milo changed the spell.

Instead of trying to stop the fire, he curved the barrier.

Kael understood immediately.

Redirect.

Just like the drakes.

The flame bent.

Not completely.

Enough.

Most of the Ash-King’s fire rolled north of the station and tore through the trees.

The remaining heat slammed into the western wall.

Stone burst.

The kiln station disappeared behind flame and smoke.

Milo’s barrier broke.

He flew backward.

Darius caught him before he hit the ground.

For several seconds, Milo did not speak.

That frightened Kael more than the impact.

Then Milo coughed.

"I hate birds."

Darius set him upright.

"That was not a bird."

"I hate classification."

Kael almost laughed from pure relief.

Galahad shouted from the southeast route.

"Move!"

They moved.

No one stayed to defend the station.

There was nothing left to defend.

The Ash-King had burned half of it in one attack.

That answered another question.

A standard B-rank team would not have survived that.

Maybe an ordinary A-rank team would not either if they stood in the open.

Iris led them into the drainage route.

It was barely a path.

The ground dropped sharply between two ridges, following an old runoff channel filled with stones and exposed roots.

Derren’s litter bounced.

The healer cursed.

The two route workers carrying him slowed.

Galahad moved beside them.

"Can he survive this?"

The healer glared at him.

"He can survive being shaken better than being burned alive."

"Good."

"That was not approval."

"Still useful."

Kael followed behind Darius and Milo.

Milo’s breathing was too heavy.

Kael noticed.

"You all right?"

Milo looked at him.

"No."

Kael waited.

Milo continued.

"That was an enormous amount of magic."

"Can you still fight?"

"Yes."

"Certain?"

Milo gave him an offended look.

"I said I was tired, not dead."

Darius glanced back.

"Conserve."

Milo nodded.

That was the first time Kael had seen him obey an instruction without argument.

The route bent south.

The forest thickened overhead.

Good.

The Ash-King could not easily dive through that canopy.

Then the System flashed.

[DIRECTIONAL WARNING]

Movement ahead.

Three sources.

Kael stopped.

"Three ahead."

Iris froze.

She raised one fist.

Everyone stopped.

Darius looked toward Kael.

"Distance?"

The System updated.

Estimated distance: 60–90 paces.

Heat signatures: humanoid range.

"About seventy paces. Human-sized."

Milo looked toward Kael.

"Your instincts are becoming disturbingly specific."

Kael ignored him.

Iris moved ahead alone.

Galahad let her.

Twenty seconds.

Thirty.

Then a whistle.

One short note.

Safe enough to approach.

They advanced.

The three people waiting in the drainage channel wore dark travel gear.

The first was the man from the kiln junction.

The second wore the gray cloak and short spear.

The third was unfamiliar.

A woman.

Tall.

Leather armor.

A narrow sword at one hip.

None raised weapons.

Galahad stopped the party.

The first man looked past him toward the smoke rising behind the trees.

"You saw him."

Galahad’s expression remained cold.

"Yes."

The man looked toward Milo.

"And somehow you’re still here."

Milo took a breath.

"I also find it disappointing."

The woman looked at the litter.

"You found the charcoal man."

"Yes."

"Good."

Kael watched her.

No surprise.

She knew about Derren.

The network was wider than the people at one station.

Darius stepped slightly forward.

"Who are you?"

The first man looked toward him.

"You keep asking that."

"And you keep avoiding it."

The woman answered instead.

"We work the Caldera road."

Kael frowned.

"For whom?"

No answer.

Galahad’s eyes hardened.

"Then we keep moving."

The man glanced east.

"You shouldn’t."

Galahad looked back.

"Why?"

The woman pointed toward the drainage route ahead.

"Lower road is blocked."

Iris’s expression changed.

"By what?"

"Drakes."

"How many?"

"Enough."

Milo sighed.

"That measurement has become popular."

The gray-cloaked figure spoke.

"Not hatchlings."

Darius looked toward them.

"Brood guards?"

"Yes."

"How many?"

"Four when we came through."

Silence.

Kael remembered one brood guard throwing Darius through stone.

Four.

With Derren on a litter.

Milo partly depleted.

Ash-King overhead.

A-rank.

Galahad looked toward Iris.

"Alternative."

She pulled the old map.

The woman watched.

"You won’t find one on that."

Iris looked at her.

"Why?"

"Because the old map stops before the lava cuts."

Kael frowned.

"Lava?"

The man looked toward him.

"You thought Obsidian Caldera was a name."

Milo looked toward Kael.

"I had hoped it was branding."

Nobody laughed.

The woman pointed south.

"There’s an upper footpath. Narrow. Crosses the black shelf."

"Safe?"

"No."

Galahad stared.

"Safer?"

She thought.

"From the brood guards."

"And from the Ash-King?"

"If he sees you, no."

Excellent.

Galahad considered.

Then Kael’s System changed.

Not a warning.

A prompt.

[Environmental Scan]

Subsurface heat anomaly detected southeast.

Multiple narrow thermal fractures.

Surface stability: variable.

Possible route exists between major heat channels.

Kael focused.

The directional map sharpened.

Thin red lines appeared across the southeast terrain.

Heat beneath stone.

Between them, cooler ground formed an irregular corridor.

Not safe.

Possible.

Kael looked toward Iris.

"Southeast route. There may be stable ground between underground heat channels."

She frowned.

"You know that how?"

Kael pointed toward the terrain.

"The rock temperature changes."

Iris crouched and pressed the back of her hand near the soil.

Then moved several feet.

Again.

Her expression changed.

"He’s right."

The woman stared at Kael.

"How did you see that?"

Kael ignored the question.

Galahad looked toward Iris.

"Can you navigate it?"

"If the heat pattern stays readable."

Kael nodded.

"I can help."

There.

Not the System solving it.

Kael helping Iris because the System saw something none of them had noticed.

Galahad made the decision.

"Southeast."

The first man stepped forward.

"You don’t know where that comes out."

"Do you?"

"Yes."

"Then guide us."

The man hesitated.

Darius looked at him.

"You know the route. We have an injured man. Decide."

The stranger glanced toward the woman.

She nodded.

"Fine."

Galahad pointed at him.

"You lead beside Scout. You do not control the mission."

The man smiled faintly.

"Still pretending this is your road."

Galahad did not react.

"It is my mission."

The smile disappeared.

They moved.

The new route climbed sharply.

The drainage channel gave way to black stone.

At first, Kael thought the rock was merely dark.

Then he realized portions of it were glassy.

Obsidian.

The forest began thinning.

Not because of altitude.

Because the ground was too hot and unstable for dense growth.

The System remained active at the edge of Kael’s vision.

[Environmental Scan]

Thermal fracture: left.

He pointed.

"Iris. Left side bad."

She tested it.

A crack ran beneath a thin layer of ash.

She changed direction.

Thirty yards later:

[Gas concentration increasing.]

Kael smelled sulfur a moment afterward.

"Cover your mouths."

The stranger looked back.

"Why?"

Iris saw the faint vapor.

"Gas."

The man’s expression shifted.

"You really can read the shelf."

Kael did not answer.

They moved faster.

Sera remained near the rear, watching the exposed sky through gaps in the trees.

Milo walked beside the litter now.

Not because he had been assigned there.

Because one of the route workers had begun limping.

Milo noticed before anyone asked.

He stepped underneath one handle.

The worker looked at him.

"I can carry it."

Milo adjusted his grip.

"Excellent. You can carry the next one."

Derren opened one eye.

"Who are you?"

"A tragic victim of poor organizational planning."

Derren looked confused.

The healer sighed.

"He’s helping."

"Against my better judgment," Milo added.

The path narrowed.

Black stone rose on one side.

A steep drop opened on the other.

Far below, orange light pulsed between cracks.

Kael stopped.

That was not sunlight.

Lava.

Not a river.

Not yet.

But molten rock moved somewhere beneath the shelf.

The mission had left the normal forest behind.

The caldera was beginning.

Then Sera shouted.

"Down!"

A drake dropped from above.

Not the Ash-King.

A brood guard.

It landed behind them and blocked the route they had just crossed.

Everyone turned.

Another shape appeared ahead.

Second brood guard.

The woman guide cursed.

"They found the shelf."

Galahad looked behind.

One.

Ahead.

One.

Then a third landed on the ridge above them.

The party was trapped on a narrow black-stone path with Derren on a litter, Milo already drained from blocking the Ash-King, and molten fractures beneath their feet.

Kael’s System flashed.

[CRITICAL TERRAIN WARNING]

High-impact combat may destabilize shelf.

Estimated collapse risk: significant.

Kael looked at Darius.

"Do not fight hard."

Darius stared at him.

"That is an unusual instruction."

"The shelf can break."

Milo looked down.

"Wonderful."

The brood guard ahead inhaled.

Red light opened beneath its throat scales.

Kael’s System marked the familiar pattern.

But this time, attacking the weak point was not the only problem.

If the creature fell wrong, the road might break.

If Darius used too much Aura, the road might break.

If Milo used another large spell—

The road might break.

Galahad saw the situation.

His eyes moved once across the entire party.

Then he pointed.

"Archer. Eyes. Commander, hold front. Prince, terrain. Mobile—"

Milo looked exhausted.

Then smiled.

"Please say magic."

Galahad almost smiled back.

"Get us off this shelf."

Milo looked down at the obsidian.

Then at the brood guards.

Then at the drop.

His smile widened.

"Oh."

Kael did not like that smile.

"What?"

Milo raised both hands.

"Mobile has an idea."

Darius looked toward him.

"Will it kill us?"

Milo considered.

"Not intentionally."

"That is not enough."

"It is what we have."

The first brood guard charged.

Sera fired.

Her arrow struck the eye.

The creature jerked sideways.

Darius met it with a controlled strike instead of the overwhelming Aura he had used earlier.

Kael ran toward the center of the shelf.

The System mapped the heat fractures beneath him.

Red.

Red.

Yellow.

Then one cooler line running toward a broad stone platform twenty yards southeast.

There.

"Platform southeast! Stronger ground!"

Iris looked.

"Route is too narrow!"

Kael pointed.

"Not if we leave the road."

She followed his direction.

A black slope descended toward the platform.

Steep.

Glassy.

Dangerous.

Possible.

Galahad understood.

"Can the litter cross?"

Iris looked toward Milo.

Milo was staring at the slope too.

"Yes," he said.

Iris frowned.

"You didn’t check."

"I don’t plan to walk it."

Mana gathered around him again.

Smaller this time.

Tighter.

More precise.

The air beneath Derren’s litter shimmered.

The healer stepped back.

The litter rose six inches.

Derren’s eyes opened completely.

"What—"

Milo pointed at him.

"Do not become heavy emotionally."

The litter floated.

Not gracefully.

Enough.

Milo looked toward Iris.

"Walk. I follow your feet."

Iris moved onto the slope.

Milo guided the litter after her.

The route workers followed.

The healer stayed beside Derren.

That left Galahad, Kael, Darius, and Sera holding the shelf.

Every member contributing.

No one disposable.

The brood guard ahead attacked again.

Darius intercepted.

The one behind spread its wings.

Sera turned and fired two arrows in rapid succession.

One struck the throat seam.

The other hit the wing joint.

The drake stumbled.

Not dead.

Delayed.

Kael’s System flashed.

[Structural threshold approaching.]

Cracks spread beneath Darius’s feet.

"Commander! Two steps right!"

Darius moved without asking.

The drake struck where he had stood.

The obsidian shelf shattered.

A section collapsed into the glowing fissure below.

The brood guard lost one front leg over the edge.

Darius saw the opportunity.

Kael saw the danger.

If he struck—

"No Aura!"

Darius changed the attack halfway through.

Instead of a killing blow, he cut the wing tendon.

The brood guard lost balance.

Its own weight carried it over the broken edge.

It disappeared.

The sound of impact came much later.

Milo looked back from the slope.

"I would like credit for not being the most dangerous person here."

Kael shouted, "Move!"

"I am moving!"

Sera retreated next.

Galahad followed.

Kael remained long enough for Darius to disengage.

The rear brood guard charged.

The third dropped from the ridge.

Too many.

Kael reached for Ice.

The System warned him.

[Local temperature extreme.]

Ice persistence: low.

He did not need persistence.

Only seconds.

Kael slammed his palm against the ground.

Ice spread across the obsidian behind him.

Thin.

Not a wall.

A surface.

The charging brood guard stepped onto it.

Its front claws slipped.

Momentum carried the creature sideways.

It struck the third drake.

Both tangled.

Darius reached Kael.

"Go."

They ran.

The ice melted almost immediately.

It had lasted long enough.

They reached the stronger platform as Milo lowered Derren’s litter.

Everyone was breathing hard.

Milo nearly collapsed beside it.

The healer caught his shoulder.

He looked offended.

"I was sitting."

"You were falling."

"Interpretation."

Sera reached the platform last before Darius and Kael.

She turned immediately.

The two surviving brood guards stood on the opposite shelf.

Neither followed.

One screamed.

The other looked upward.

Then both suddenly launched away.

Kael stared.

"Why?"

The woman guide looked toward the sky.

"Ash-King."

No one needed another explanation.

The light disappeared again.

The great shadow crossed the black shelf.

This time, however, the expedition had no roof.

No dense forest.

No kiln wall.

Nothing above them except open sky.

Kael’s System flashed bright red.

[CRITICAL WARNING]

Extreme thermal concentration detected.

No sufficient natural cover within immediate radius.

Everyone looked upward.

The Ash-King turned.

Its chest began to glow.

Milo was on one knee.

Darius was injured.

Derren could not run.

Sera had arrows.

Iris had terrain.

Galahad had command.

Kael had the System.

And there was nowhere to hide.

Galahad drew his sword.

"Then we make cover."
