The Imperial System: Architect of an Empire
Chapter 290: Beneath the HatcheryThe first drake came low through the tunnel.
Its belly nearly scraped the volcanic stone as it crawled forward, wings folded tightly against its sides to fit between the black walls. A dull orange glow pulsed beneath the thinner scales of its throat, disappearing and returning with every breath.
Another moved behind it.
Then another.
More claws clicked against stone farther back, overlapping until the sound became continuous.
Kael could see perhaps twelve.
The System saw farther than he could.
[DIRECTIONAL SCAN]
Confirmed heat signatures: 34
Additional signatures partially obscured by surrounding geothermal activity.
Estimated total: 34–41
Most signatures consistent with juvenile drakes.
Environmental warning: confined passage increases fire and crowding hazards.
Kael stared down the tunnel.
"Thirty-four confirmed. Could be more."
Milo slowly turned his head toward him.
"You have an impressive talent for making bad situations sound worse."
"I thought you liked accurate information."
"I like accurate information when it says things like ’three’ or ’none.’"
Sera had already raised her bow.
Iris lowered herself near the left wall, eyes tracking the ceiling as much as the floor.
Galahad looked once toward Derren’s litter and then toward Darius.
"We cannot fight backward forever."
Darius nodded. "Then we make them come to us badly."
Milo frowned.
"That sounds like knight language."
"It is."
"Terrible language."
The first juvenile drake opened its jaws.
Red light brightened beneath its throat.
Kael’s System flashed.
[THERMAL BUILDUP DETECTED]
"Fire!"
Darius moved before the word finished leaving Kael’s mouth.
He did not attack the drake.
His sword struck the tunnel wall.
Aura burst through the stone.
A wide section of loose volcanic rock broke free and crashed diagonally across the passage.
The drake breathed.
Flame slammed into the fallen stone.
Heat rolled around the obstruction, but the main stream split instead of traveling straight toward the expedition.
Sera fired through the opening on the right.
Her arrow entered the creature’s mouth while it was still exhaling.
The drake jerked backward.
Darius was already there.
One cut beneath the jaw.
The creature collapsed.
The second juvenile tried climbing over it.
Galahad stepped forward.
"Keep the opening clear!"
Milo lifted one hand.
Mana flickered.
The dead drake slid sideways.
Not quickly.
Not dramatically.
Its body simply shifted as though the floor beneath it had tilted.
The corpse disappeared into a shallow break beside the tunnel wall.
Galahad glanced toward Milo.
"Good."
Milo looked almost offended by the compliment.
"That was the least impressive thing I have done all week."
"It worked."
"That does not improve its dignity."
The second drake entered.
Darius wounded it.
Galahad finished it.
Then three came together.
Sera’s first arrow struck the nearest eye.
Her second entered a throat seam.
Iris threw a knife low.
Not at the head.
At the front foot.
The blade wedged between two claws.
The drake stumbled.
Darius cut across its neck.
The third creature tried forcing itself through while the others were falling.
Kael moved.
Ice covered only the floor beneath its front feet.
A narrow patch.
Nothing more.
The juvenile stepped onto it and slipped sideways.
Kael drove his sword through the softer scales beneath its shoulder.
Aura traveled through the blade.
The creature spasmed.
Then Milo flicked two fingers.
A small burst of force struck the drake’s head and slammed it against the wall.
Kael looked at him.
Milo leaned back against the stone.
"I am conserving."
"That was conserving?"
"That was insulting it."
More movement came from the darkness.
They had killed four.
Maybe five.
It barely mattered.
The tunnel behind them still glowed with dozens of small orange throats.
Galahad looked toward the healer.
"How is Derren?"
"Still conscious."
Derren answered weakly from the litter.
"I can hear you."
The healer did not look down.
"That is not the same as being useful."
Milo nodded.
"She remains my favorite person here."
Derren closed his eyes again.
The healer checked the bandage around his thigh.
"It is holding, but every time we move him quickly, the wound starts again."
Galahad looked toward the tunnel ahead.
They needed a route.
Not simply another fight.
"Scout."
Iris understood.
She moved several yards deeper into the darkness behind the group, searching the passage they had not yet explored.
Kael watched her disappear.
The System remained open.
Not speaking constantly.
Tracking.
Heat signatures ahead.
Their party behind him.
The unstable tunnel around them.
Then another notification appeared.
[Environmental Analysis]
Air temperature increasing slowly.
Primary source: deeper western tunnel network.
Airflow direction: eastward through current passage.
Kael frowned.
The drakes were coming from the warmer side.
That made sense if the hatchery lay deeper west.
But the airflow suggested another opening somewhere behind them.
Possibly an exit.
Possibly another problem.
Kael looked toward Galahad.
"There’s airflow coming from deeper behind us. The tunnel connects somewhere."
"Useful somewhere?"
"I can’t tell yet."
"That is still useful."
The next wave came.
Seven juveniles pushed forward almost together.
Too many for the choke.
Darius’s expression changed.
"Back two steps."
Everyone at the front moved.
The drakes surged into the extra space.
Darius released Aura.
Not as a strike.
Not along his sword.
Outward.
Kael felt it immediately.
The air seemed to gain weight.
The nearest drake stopped.
Its claws scraped against the stone.
Another lowered instinctively.
The third shook its head violently, trying to force itself forward.
Milo stopped smiling.
"What was that?"
Darius did not answer.
He moved.
His sword passed through the first drake’s throat.
Galahad struck the second.
Sera shot the third.
The pressure remained.
Not visible exactly.
The torch flame near Derren leaned away from Darius as though pushed by an invisible wind.
The weaker juveniles hesitated at the edge of it.
Some backed into one another.
Milo stared.
"That is definitely not normal reinforcement."
Kael had seen Darius manipulate Aura beyond his blade before.
Projected strikes.
Pressure.
The ability to affect an enemy without direct contact.
But this felt different.
Less like an attack.
More like presence.
Darius took another step.
Two juveniles retreated.
Milo swallowed.
"I have questions."
Galahad cut down another drake.
"Ask them when nothing is trying to burn us alive."
"That has become an increasingly unreasonable requirement."
The moment passed.
Darius reduced the pressure.
Not because he could not maintain it.
Because the drakes were already adjusting.
Several climbed the walls.
One reached the ceiling.
Iris had warned them earlier that the tunnel was irregular above.
Now Kael understood why that mattered.
"Ceiling!"
Sera looked up.
Too late.
A juvenile dropped behind Darius.
Galahad turned.
The creature hit the stone and immediately lunged toward Derren.
The route worker carrying the rear of the litter released it and stepped forward with his spear.
The drake struck.
The man barely held.
His boots slid.
The spear shaft bent.
The healer dragged Derren’s litter backward with the other worker.
Iris appeared from the darkness.
She did not attack the drake’s scales.
She climbed onto the fallen stone beside it, reached over the neck, and drove her knife directly behind the jaw.
The creature snapped wildly.
The route worker pushed.
Together they forced it sideways.
Sera’s arrow entered the eye.
The juvenile collapsed.
The worker stared at his bent spear.
Iris looked at his hands.
"Bitten?"
"No."
"Burned?"
"No."
"Then move."
He moved.
Kael smiled faintly.
Iris had not wasted a word.
Another juvenile dropped from the ceiling.
Milo looked up at it.
"Oh, come on."
It opened its jaws.
Milo slapped one hand against the wall.
A rectangular section of stone shifted outward.
Not much.
Enough.
The rock struck the drake broadside while it was still falling and pinned one wing against the opposite wall.
Milo stared at it.
"You had the entire tunnel."
Kael drove his blade beneath its throat.
The drake collapsed.
Milo looked at him.
"I had that."
"You were talking to it."
"That was psychological warfare."
The System flashed.
[Pattern Recognition]
Juvenile drakes showing repeated vertical-route behavior.
Likely access points above current passage.
Kael looked upward.
There.
Dark grooves.
Not natural cracks.
Paths worn by claws.
The creatures had been using the upper breaks repeatedly.
"Iris."
She turned.
Kael pointed.
"The ceiling channels are part of their route."
She examined them.
Then followed one with her eyes.
"It runs behind us."
Galahad looked toward her.
"To where?"
"Can’t see."
Milo sighed.
"Please say away."
Iris ignored him.
She moved farther back and climbed onto a broken ledge.
The drakes pressed the frontline again.
Darius and Galahad held.
Kael supported from the side.
Sera controlled anything trying to climb above them.
Milo used only small spells now.
That impressed Kael more than another enormous barrier would have.
A force pulse moved a drake’s jaw six inches.
Sera’s arrow found the exposed throat.
A short mana brace reinforced a cracked section of stone before Darius stepped on it.
A small burst beneath one juvenile’s wing ruined its leap.
No wasted spectacle.
Every spell had a job.
Kael’s System noticed something else.
[Thermal sac instability detected in clustered juveniles.]
Caution: overlapping discharge may produce secondary ignition.
Kael remembered what had happened earlier.
He did not immediately exploit it.
Not here.
Not with Derren behind them.
Not with unstable stone overhead.
The System had given information.
Kael still had to decide whether using it was smart.
"Do not rupture their throats when they bunch together."
Darius glanced toward him.
"Reason?"
"They can set each other off."
Milo looked at the glowing cluster.
"Ah."
Sera lowered her next shot slightly and hit a wing joint instead.
Galahad changed the angle of his sword.
They adjusted without discussion.
That was what a capable party did.
The healer shouted.
"Blood."
Kael turned.
Derren’s bandage had darkened again.
The healer pressed both hands around the wound.
"We need him still."
Galahad looked toward the drakes.
"For how long?"
"Five minutes."
Milo laughed once.
Not because it was funny.
Five minutes might as well have been an hour.
Then Iris called from the darkness.
"Found something."
Galahad did not turn.
"What?"
"Side passage."
"Safe?"
"Unknown."
"That answer is becoming popular."
"It is narrower than this one."
Darius killed another juvenile.
"Narrow is useful."
Iris continued.
"It slopes down."
Kael’s System reacted as he looked in her direction.
[Directional Scan]
Airflow confirmed through side passage.
Thermal concentration lower than current western approach.
No large heat signature detected within immediate range.
Kael nodded.
"Better air. Cooler than this tunnel."
Galahad made the decision.
"We move Derren first."
Not everyone.
Not a blind retreat.
Derren first.
The healer and both route workers lifted the litter.
Iris led them toward the side passage.
Sera moved with them.
Galahad looked toward Milo.
"Go."
Milo glanced at Darius.
"You have the giant sword problem under control?"
"No."
"Excellent."
Milo moved.
Kael stayed.
Galahad stayed.
Darius stayed.
Three holding.
The juvenile drakes continued pressing.
Kael could hear the litter scraping over stone behind him.
Then the healer cursed.
"Too narrow!"
Iris answered.
"Turn it."
"I know."
Derren groaned.
Kael looked back once.
The litter was being rotated sideways to fit through the side passage.
That would take time.
The drakes did not care.
Five came at once.
Darius released that pressure again.
The tunnel changed around him.
The first juvenile faltered.
The second lowered its head.
The third actually stopped.
Galahad looked toward Darius but said nothing.
Kael felt the weight in his chest.
Not enough to hurt him.
Enough to understand what a weaker person might experience.
Milo, halfway into the side passage, stopped and looked back.
"That."
Darius killed one drake.
"What?"
"That thing you are doing."
Darius cut another.
"Aura."
Milo frowned.
"I know what Aura is."
"Then stop asking."
"That is not normal Aura."
Darius almost smiled.
"Later."
Milo stared at him.
Then another drake screamed and he ducked into the side passage.
Kael filed it away.
Later.
Not now.
The party had more immediate problems.
The litter finally cleared the opening.
Sera called, "Derren through!"
Galahad stepped backward.
"Prince."
Kael moved first.
Galahad followed.
Darius remained at the choke.
Three juveniles advanced.
Then six.
Darius raised his sword.
Aura compressed around him.
Not the broad pressure this time.
A single projected strike hit the tunnel ceiling.
Stone cracked.
A slab fell between him and the drakes.
Not enough to seal the passage.
Enough to slow them.
Darius turned.
"Move."
They moved.
The side passage was much tighter.
Kael had to turn his shoulders in several places.
The air was cooler, though not cool in any normal sense. Compared with the hatchery tunnel, it felt almost comfortable.
The System marked heat beneath the floor.
[Geothermal fracture below passage.]
Surface integrity: acceptable under current load.
Kael kept moving.
Behind them came scratching.
The juveniles were trying to force through.
Good.
The narrow passage reduced their numbers.
Bad.
It would become deadly if they were trapped ahead.
Iris stopped.
Everyone nearly collided with her.
Galahad whispered, "Why?"
She raised one hand.
Voices.
Human voices.
Far ahead.
Not the supernatural voices from the forest.
These were real.
Low.
Muffled.
Several people.
Milo leaned toward Kael.
"Please let them be friendly."
Kael whispered back.
"You ask for a lot."
"I have had a difficult day."
Iris moved forward alone.
Galahad let her.
The rest waited.
Derren’s breathing sounded too loud in the narrow passage.
The healer pressed fresh cloth against his thigh.
Milo crouched beside her.
"Can you stop it?"
"If everyone stops moving him."
Milo looked around the tunnel.
"We are having trouble with that part."
She gave him a look.
He raised his hands.
"Not criticism."
Behind them, something hit the blocked passage.
The rock slab shifted.
Sera turned immediately.
"How long?"
Darius listened.
"Not long."
Milo sighed.
"Of course."
Iris returned.
Her expression was different.
Not alarmed.
Focused.
"Three men."
Galahad asked, "Armed?"
"Yes."
"Route workers?"
"No."
"Do they know we are here?"
"Not yet."
"Uniform?"
"Mixed armor. Same iron mark on each chest."
Galahad’s eyes narrowed.
That meant something to him.
Kael noticed.
"What mark?"
Iris traced a simple shape in the air.
A narrow vertical bar crossed by two shorter horizontal lines.
Galahad’s expression hardened further.
Milo looked between them.
"You know it."
"I know of it."
Darius looked toward Galahad.
"Who?"
Galahad answered quietly.
"The Iron Vanguard."
There was no dramatic entrance.
No Theron Vance descending stairs.
No villain speech.
Just a name.
And suddenly another piece of the western mystery had become real.
Kael looked toward the darkness ahead.
"How certain?"
"Enough."
Iris nodded.
"The armor matches the description?"
Galahad looked at her.
"Yes."
Sera shifted her bow.
"Do we go around?"
Iris shook her head.
"No second route."
Darius looked behind them.
The juveniles struck the blockage again.
Stone cracked.
"We cannot go back."
Galahad nodded.
"Then we do not introduce ourselves with swords unless they force it."
Milo blinked.
"That was surprisingly diplomatic."
"We have an injured man."
"Less surprising."
Galahad looked around the party.
"No one starts a fight. We need space for the healer, information, and a route out. We learn before we decide."
Kael nodded.
Good.
This was still an investigation.
Even here.
Even now.
The Iron Vanguard might be responsible for something.
They might be connected to the workers.
They might be connected to Rellan.
They might simply be another group operating in dangerous territory.
Evidence first.
The party advanced.
Iris led.
Darius came second.
Galahad third.
Kael stayed near the litter.
Milo and Sera covered the rear.
The passage widened gradually until it opened into an old volcanic chamber.
Not natural anymore.
Someone had worked here.
Iron braces reinforced sections of the walls.
A wooden platform had been built over one geothermal crack.
Crates sat beneath rough canvas.
Three men turned as the expedition entered.
All armed.
All wearing the same iron insignia.
The nearest reached for his sword.
Darius did not draw.
He simply looked at him.
The man stopped halfway.
Galahad stepped forward.
"We need five minutes of still ground for an injured man."
The three exchanged looks.
Not what they expected.
The oldest of them, a broad man with a scar across one cheek, looked toward Derren.
Then toward the tunnel behind the expedition.
"What followed you?"
"Juvenile drakes."
"How many?"
Milo answered.
"Approximately all of them."
Galahad glanced toward him.
"What?"
"Thirty-plus."
The scarred man’s expression changed.
"From the upper hatchery?"
The route woman answered from beside Derren.
"Yes."
The man swore under his breath.
Interesting.
He knew the hatchery.
Sera watched him carefully.
Galahad said, "We need somewhere defensible for five minutes."
The scarred man pointed toward the far side of the chamber.
"Stone room. One entrance."
"Why help us?"
The man looked toward Derren.
"Because he’ll bleed out if we argue."
That answer surprised Kael.
Not because it proved anything.
Because it complicated things.
Good.
The world should be complicated.
Galahad nodded.
"Move."
They carried Derren across.
The small stone room had probably once stored tools.
Now it held empty crates and two oil lamps.
The healer immediately ordered everyone away from the litter.
"Out."
Galahad stayed.
"I need—"
"Out."
He left.
Milo smiled.
"She outranks everyone eventually."
The door remained open.
The healer cut away the blood-soaked wrap and began working.
Kael stood in the main chamber.
The three Iron Vanguard men had not attacked.
They had not welcomed them either.
Darius positioned himself between them and the stone room.
Iris examined the chamber.
Sera watched both entrances.
Milo sat on a crate.
The scarred Iron Vanguard man looked at him.
"You always sit during emergencies?"
Milo nodded.
"When possible."
The man frowned.
Kael almost smiled.
Galahad looked toward the insignia.
"Iron Vanguard."
The scarred man did not deny it.
"You know the mark."
"I know the name."
"That can be dangerous."
"So can hiding armed men beneath a drake hatchery."
One of the younger Vanguard fighters shifted.
The scarred man raised one hand.
He stopped.
Good.
Discipline.
Galahad continued.
"What are you doing here?"
"Working."
"That is not an answer."
"It is the one you are getting."
Milo looked toward Kael.
"Everyone in this forest attended the same school of conversation."
Kael ignored him.
His attention moved toward the crates.
The System offered nothing.
Not yet.
He had not touched them.
Not inspected them.
Good.
No magical omniscience.
Iris crouched beside one.
The canvas covering it had been disturbed recently.
She looked toward Galahad.
"May I?"
The scarred man answered first.
"No."
Galahad looked at him.
"Then we have a problem."
"Not if you leave."
"We cannot leave until the healer finishes."
"Then sit quietly."
Darius spoke for the first time.
"We found a missing man’s pack at one of the lower kiln stations."
The scarred man looked at him.
No immediate reaction.
Darius continued.
"Rellan Dorr."
One of the younger men glanced sideways.
Small.
Quick.
Iris saw it.
Kael saw Iris see it.
Galahad probably did too.
The scarred man remained still.
"Never heard the name."
The younger fighter had.
Maybe.
Not enough yet.
Galahad did not accuse.
He simply stored it.
"Three adventurers disappeared before Derren."
The scarred man shrugged.
"People disappear in the western forest."
"They do."
"Then go ask the forest."
Milo leaned back against the wall.
"I attempted that earlier. The forest talks too much."
Nobody understood except Kael’s party.
That was fine.
A heavy impact came from the passage behind them.
Everyone turned.
The juvenile drakes had reached the narrow route.
The Iron Vanguard fighters immediately moved.
No hesitation.
The scarred man pointed.
"Brace the entrance."
The youngest grabbed an iron bar leaning against the wall.
The other pulled a low crate aside, revealing a stack of heavy hooked chains.
Galahad watched.
"You prepared for this."
"We prepare for drakes."
"How often?"
The scarred man ignored him.
Another impact.
Stone chipped from the passage mouth.
Darius stepped forward.
The scarred man looked at him.
"You hold the center?"
"Yes."
"I’ll take left."
Galahad’s eyebrows rose.
Darius did not object.
Interesting again.
The Iron Vanguard man knew how to fight.
Milo stood reluctantly.
"I was enjoying the diplomacy."
Sera moved to the right side.
Iris remained near the center.
Galahad watched the chamber.
Not joining the frontline immediately.
Command.
Kael drew his sword.
The first juvenile forced through the opening.
Darius struck.
The second came low.
The scarred Vanguard fighter caught it with one hooked chain and yanked the head sideways.
Sera shot the exposed eye.
The third tried climbing over both.
Milo flicked his wrist.
Force hit the ceiling above it.
Dust and loose stone dropped directly into its face.
It flinched.
Kael cut the wing joint.
The Vanguard fighter beside him finished the throat.
For several seconds, strangers fought together.
Not friends.
Not allies.
Just people with a common immediate problem.
That was more believable than instantly revealing enemies and motivations.
The drakes pressed.
Darius released Aura Pressure again.
The nearest juveniles hesitated.
This time Kael had enough calm to feel it properly.
The pressure extended through the chamber.
Controlled.
Directed.
The two younger Iron Vanguard fighters noticed.
One stared.
The scarred man did not.
That told Kael something too.
He had seen high-level Aura before.
Milo noticed the younger fighter’s reaction.
Then looked at Darius.
Again.
Curious.
But he did not ask.
Not now.
Good.
Later.
The fight lasted nearly six minutes.
Long enough for the healer to shout from the stone room:
"Bleeding controlled!"
That mattered more than every drake they had killed.
Galahad immediately changed priorities.
"Prepare to move."
The scarred Vanguard man glanced toward him.
"You’re leaving?"
"Yes."
"Through where?"
Galahad looked toward the far tunnel.
The man laughed once.
"That goes deeper."
"Does it come out?"
"Eventually."
"Where?"
No answer.
Milo sighed.
"There it is again."
The scarred man looked toward the side passage the drakes were entering from.
"You cannot go back."
Galahad nodded.
"So we go forward."
Kael’s System flickered.
[Environmental Scan]
Airflow detected through far passage.
Temperature gradient: increasing.
Subsurface geothermal pressure: elevated.
No immediate structural failure detected.
Not safe.
Not collapsing.
Yet.
Kael looked at Galahad.
"The far passage connects somewhere. Air is moving through it."
Galahad nodded.
"Good enough."
The healer emerged.
"Derren can move again, but slowly."
Derren muttered from the litter.
"I hate all of you."
Milo looked toward him.
"That is an encouraging sign."
The scarred Iron Vanguard man watched them preparing.
Galahad looked at him.
"You know the route ahead."
"Yes."
"Where does it lead?"
The man studied him.
Then Darius.
Then Kael.
His gaze lingered on Kael’s clothing and sword.
Recognition had probably happened long ago.
He simply had not said anything.
Finally, he answered.
"Lower works."
"What works?"
"Old stations."
Galahad waited.
The man did not continue.
"Are your people there?"
"Some."
"Your commander?"
The chamber became subtly quieter.
Not silent.
But different.
The scarred man looked at Galahad.
"Maybe."
That was the first hint.
Nothing more.
No Theron entrance.
No reveal.
A direction.
Something waiting deeper.
Galahad nodded.
"We’re going that way."
The scarred man gave him a humorless smile.
"I assumed."
Darius looked at the three Vanguard fighters.
"You coming?"
"No."
"Why?"
"We hold this chamber."
"For what?"
The man looked toward the drake tunnel.
"Because if we don’t, everything behind us reaches the lower works."
Kael frowned.
"Everything?"
The man did not explain.
Another scream echoed through the passage.
Deeper than the juveniles.
The hatch-mother.
Still coming.
The scarred man’s face changed.
For the first time, Kael saw concern.
"Move."
Galahad did not waste time.
The expedition gathered around Derren.
Iris took the lead.
Sera moved behind her.
Milo positioned himself near the litter despite his exhaustion.
Kael followed.
Galahad remained just behind the center.
Darius stayed last.
Before Kael entered the far passage, he looked back.
The three Iron Vanguard fighters were taking positions at the chamber entrance.
One locked the hooked chains into iron rings in the floor.
Another carried two oil jars toward the wall.
The scarred man met Kael’s eyes.
No hatred.
No friendship.
Just measurement.
Then he said:
"If you keep going, Prince, eventually someone is going to ask why you came."
Kael stopped.
So he did know.
Milo looked back.
"Was that supposed to be mysterious?"
The man ignored him.
Kael asked, "And what should I say?"
The scarred Vanguard fighter smiled faintly.
"The truth."
Kael waited.
The man continued.
"You came because people disappeared."
"Yes."
"Then remember that before someone convinces you this place is about something bigger."
Kael frowned.
But the hatch-mother screamed again.
The chamber shook.
Galahad called from ahead.
"Prince."
Kael turned.
No answers yet.
Only another question.
That was fine.
They continued deeper.
Behind them, iron chains rattled.
The first juvenile drakes entered the chamber.
Then the far passage curved downward, and the noise faded behind black volcanic stone.
Kael’s System remained quiet for nearly a minute.
Then:
[Environmental Analysis Updated]
Ambient temperature rising.
Magical density increasing.
Multiple worked structures detected ahead.
Direction: southwest / descending
Kael looked into the darkness.
They had survived the hatchery tunnel.
They had not found Rellan.
And they still had Derren alive.
That was enough progress for one descent.
The rest would come when they earned it.
