They did not stop after the second tremor.
Galahad kept the expedition moving until the broken upper shelf disappeared behind two bends of volcanic stone and the sound of the mature drake was reduced to a distant, angry echo.
Only then did he raise one hand.
"Thirty seconds."
Milo leaned against the wall immediately.
"That is the most beautiful sentence you have spoken today."
"You have thirty."
"I heard the important part."
The armed guide did not rest. He moved to the edge of the passage and crouched beside a narrow crack running through the floor, holding his palm several inches above it.
Kael watched him.
The man pulled his hand back almost immediately.
"Hotter."
Galahad looked over.
"Than when?"
"This morning."
"You were through here this morning?"
The guide nodded.
"How much hotter?"
"Enough that I wouldn’t have stopped beside this crack."
Milo looked down at his boots.
"We are currently stopped beside this crack."
The guide stood.
"That is why I moved."
Milo stared at him.
"I dislike you."
Sera checked the string of her bow. "You dislike everyone who gives useful information."
"I dislike the timing."
Kael barely heard them.
His attention had shifted to the System.
[Environmental Analysis]
Subsurface heat density increasing
Pressure movement detected below current elevation
Primary direction: southwest
Rate of change: gradual but accelerating
Cause: unresolved
Kael frowned.
Not an eruption.
Not yet.
But the words gradual but accelerating bothered him more than a simple warning would have.
He looked toward the armed guide.
"What is southwest of us?"
The man hesitated.
Galahad noticed.
"Answer him."
"Lower chambers."
"What kind?"
"Storage. Work areas."
"Anything else?"
The man looked at Kael, then Darius, then back toward the passage.
"Old structures."
Milo sighed.
"Another person who has sworn an oath against complete sentences."
The guide ignored him.
Galahad did not.
"What old structures?"
"I don’t know all of them."
"That was not what I asked."
The man’s jaw tightened.
"Some of this place was here before the current routes were used."
That at least sounded believable.
Kael remembered the worked stone they had already passed.
The heat channels.
The reinforced bridge.
The sections of construction too old to match the newer braces and lantern posts.
Someone had used these tunnels long before the people currently operating within them.
That was worth remembering.
It was not worth stopping for.
Galahad looked toward the healer.
"Derren?"
"Still stable."
Derren muttered, "Still here."
The healer looked down at him.
"You sound disappointed."
"I’m trying to keep expectations reasonable."
Milo raised one hand weakly.
"I like him more every hour."
The healer tightened one of the litter straps.
"You are both exhausting."
"See?" Milo said to Derren. "Bonding."
Galahad lowered his hand.
"Move."
They continued.
The tunnel began sloping downward again, but not steeply. Unlike the previous natural passages, this section had been widened by tools. The walls were rough, yet too evenly spaced. Old pick marks remained visible beneath soot and mineral stains.
Iris moved beside the armed guide now.
Not behind him.
Beside.
That seemed to annoy him.
He glanced at her twice before finally asking, "Do you always walk that close?"
"Yes."
"Why?"
"To see what you avoid."
The man looked forward again.
Milo smiled.
"Iris, I think he likes you."
"No."
The answer came instantly.
Sera laughed quietly.
Then Iris stopped.
The guide took one more step before noticing.
"What?"
She pointed toward the wall.
A smear.
Dark brown against black stone.
Old blood.
Not ancient.
Not fresh either.
Galahad came forward.
"Human?"
Iris crouched.
"Probably."
Kael focused.
[Evidence Scan]
Biological residue detected
Human-compatible
Age estimate: several days to several weeks
Confidence: low due heat exposure
Kael looked down the passage.
"Human blood. Could be weeks old."
The armed guide turned toward him sharply.
"You can tell that?"
Kael did not answer.
Galahad pointed toward the smear.
"Who was injured here?"
"No idea."
"You expect me to believe that?"
"I expect you to understand that people bleed in these tunnels."
The reply was too practiced.
Not proof of anything.
Still worth remembering.
Iris rose and followed the smear.
Three paces.
Six.
Then it disappeared beneath a newer layer of ash.
She crouched again.
"Drag mark."
Galahad’s expression changed.
"Direction?"
"Down."
The guide looked uncomfortable now.
Sera noticed.
"So you know something."
"No."
"You keep making that face whenever we find something."
"What face?"
Milo answered from behind them.
"The face of a man discovering that silence was a poor long-term strategy."
The guide glared at him.
Milo smiled.
"There it is."
Galahad raised one hand before the argument could grow.
"Enough."
He looked at Iris.
"Can you follow it?"
"Maybe."
"We follow only if it stays on our route."
That distinction mattered.
They still had Derren.
Still had a living man to extract.
They were not abandoning him to chase every blood smear in the Caldera.
Iris nodded.
The drag mark continued down the same passage.
So did they.
After another hundred paces, the tunnel opened onto a narrow landing.
Three corridors branched from it.
The central route descended.
The left climbed slightly.
The right disappeared behind a heavy iron gate standing partly open.
The guide moved toward the center.
Iris moved right.
He stopped.
"Not that way."
Everyone looked at him.
Iris looked at the gate.
"Why?"
"Dead end."
"Then why the gate?"
Silence.
Milo groaned.
"Here we go."
Galahad stepped toward the guide.
"What is behind it?"
"Old work room."
"Used?"
"Sometimes."
"By whom?"
The man stared at him.
Galahad’s voice remained calm.
"You led us here because the eastern route collapsed. That does not mean you control what we are allowed to notice."
Darius said nothing.
He did not need to.
The guide glanced toward him anyway.
Then toward Kael.
Finally:
"People working below use it."
"Doing what?"
"Processing."
Kael frowned.
"Drakes?"
The guide hesitated again.
"Sometimes."
That answer was worse than no answer.
Iris reached the gate.
The man did not stop her.
She looked through.
Then became still.
Galahad noticed immediately.
"What?"
Iris pushed the gate farther open.
The hinges complained.
The room beyond was not large.
A workbench ran along one wall.
Several metal containers sat beneath it.
Two long tables occupied the center.
At first, Kael saw tools.
Knives.
Tongs.
Glass vessels.
Then straps.
Leather restraints attached to one table.
He stopped.
Milo stopped beside him.
For once, no joke came.
Sera entered behind them.
Her expression hardened.
The healer remained with Derren outside the room.
Good.
He did not need to see this.
Galahad looked toward the guide.
"You called this processing."
The man said nothing.
Kael approached the nearer table.
The leather was stained.
Old.
Cleaned poorly.
There were scratches along the wooden edge.
Human fingernails could have made them.
Could have.
He did not assume.
The System activated.
[Analysis]
Residual biological material detected
Human-compatible traces present
Non-human magical residue present
Multiple distinct energy signatures
Procedure purpose: unresolved
Kael’s jaw tightened.
Milo looked toward the glass vessels.
Several contained dried residue.
One held what looked like a fragment of a crystalized core.
Not large.
Not draconic, as far as Kael could tell.
Milo leaned closer without touching it.
His exhaustion disappeared beneath professional interest.
"That was processed."
Galahad looked at him.
"Meaning?"
Milo pointed with two fingers.
"Monster core fragment. Probably broken after extraction. See the cloudy edge?"
Galahad saw nothing.
"I’ll trust you."
"You should. I am very trustworthy when discussing things that cannot currently eat me."
Sera pointed toward another vessel.
"What about that?"
Milo’s expression changed.
A thin dark substance had dried along the bottom.
"I don’t know."
Kael looked toward the guide.
"What happened here?"
"I wasn’t here."
"That wasn’t the question."
"I don’t know."
Iris opened a cabinet.
Inside were folded cloths.
Bandages.
Several lengths of tubing.
And a stack of paper.
The guide moved immediately.
"Don’t."
Darius stepped once.
That was all.
The man stopped.
Iris took the papers.
Most were damaged by heat.
Some covered in numbers.
Others contained diagrams.
Not maps.
Bodies.
Human bodies.
Lines marked along arms, chest, spine.
Kael felt something cold despite the heat.
Milo took one sheet.
His humor disappeared completely.
"This is mana-channel notation."
Kael looked at him.
"You know it?"
"I know enough."
His eyes moved across the page.
"Someone was recording how magical energy moved through a person."
Galahad asked, "For healing?"
Milo did not answer immediately.
That was answer enough.
Then:
"Not like this."
He pointed toward a series of marks beside one diagram.
"Repeated overload points."
Another page.
"Channel rupture."
Another.
"Mana rejection."
Sera’s mouth tightened.
"Experiments."
Milo looked at her.
"Probably."
Probably.
Good.
Not certainty before they had it.
Kael’s System updated.
[Evidence Update]
Worked chamber contains:
Human-compatible biological residue
Monster-core fragments
Mana-channel diagrams
Records consistent with repeated energy exposure
Purpose: likely experimental
Responsible party: unknown
That last line mattered.
Kael looked toward the armed guide.
He wore the same symbol as the people above.
The room was on a route he knew.
That did not prove he had used the table.
Galahad understood that too.
"Who owns this room?"
The guide said nothing.
"Who?"
"I don’t know."
Galahad’s expression hardened.
"You know enough to tell us not to enter."
"I know enough to know I don’t belong in it."
"Why?"
The man looked toward the papers.
Then away.
"Because people who ask too many questions down here stop getting answers."
Silence.
Milo slowly looked at him.
"That was almost honest."
The guide did not react.
Kael studied him differently now.
Fear.
Not of Darius.
Not of Kael.
Not even of whatever might be deeper.
Fear of people.
That complicated things.
Galahad lowered his voice.
"Are you being threatened?"
The man laughed once.
"No."
Not convincing.
Galahad did not push.
Not yet.
Iris continued searching.
Nothing dramatic.
No pile of bodies.
No convenient confession.
A broken belt buckle.
Empty restraints.
Several burned papers.
A small wooden token beneath the second table.
She picked it up.
Then froze.
Galahad saw.
"What?"
Iris turned it.
A carved symbol.
Guild mark.
Crude.
Not an official badge.
A party token.
Something adventurers sometimes used to mark shared gear.
Derren spoke from outside.
"What is it?"
The healer tried to stop him from sitting up.
He ignored her again.
Iris walked to the doorway.
"Recognize this?"
She held it where Derren could see.
His face changed.
"Yes."
Galahad moved closer.
"Whose?"
Derren stared at the token.
"Rellan carved three."
Kael felt his stomach tighten.
"One for each of them?"
Derren nodded.
"Different marks on the back."
Iris turned it over.
Three shallow cuts crossed one corner.
Derren swallowed.
"That’s his."
No one spoke.
Rellan’s body had been found farther back.
His badge had been at the first kiln station.
His pack had been at the second.
Now something personal to him was here.
Moved.
Separated.
Spread across multiple locations.
Galahad looked toward the room again.
The restraints.
The diagrams.
The core fragments.
His expression became very still.
Kael knew that look.
Anger contained because anger was not useful yet.
Galahad turned toward the armed guide.
"Was Rellan here?"
"I don’t know."
"Think carefully."
"I said I don’t know."
Derren’s voice came weakly from the litter.
"He was."
Everyone looked at him.
The healer frowned.
"Derren—"
"He was."
Galahad approached.
"What do you mean?"
Derren closed his eyes.
"I remember his voice."
Kael froze.
The voices.
The forest.
Derren had heard his dead wife.
Had followed because it said his son was hurt.
Galahad’s expression sharpened.
"When?"
"Before they found me."
"You heard Rellan?"
"I thought I did."
"Where?"
Derren swallowed.
"Farther west."
"Did you see him?"
"No."
Important.
Only voice.
Not sight.
Derren continued.
"It said my name."
Milo no longer looked tired.
"What did it say?"
Derren opened his eyes again.
"’Don’t let them take me below.’"
Silence filled the room.
Kael looked at the restraints.
Then at the token.
Then at the guide.
The System did not tell him what it meant.
Good.
Because there were too many possibilities.
The supernatural voices had copied people before.
Maybe it copied Rellan.
Maybe Rellan had actually said those words at some point and the voice repeated them.
Maybe something worse.
They did not know.
Galahad looked at Derren.
"You are certain it sounded like Rellan?"
"Yes."
"Certain it was actually him?"
"No."
That distinction again.
Galahad nodded.
"Good."
Not good.
Useful.
He looked toward Iris.
"Take the token. Take the papers we can carry."
The guide stiffened.
"You cannot."
Galahad turned.
"Why?"
"Those are not yours."
"No."
Galahad held up one of the diagrams.
"They belong to whoever was strapped to those tables."
The guide’s jaw tightened.
"That is not how things work here."
Galahad’s expression became colder.
"Then things work badly here."
The guide reached toward the papers.
Darius moved.
Not violently.
He simply stepped between them.
The man stopped.
Again.
Milo watched Darius.
There was no Aura Pressure this time.
There did not need to be.
Galahad folded the papers and passed them to Iris.
"We are leaving."
The guide looked angry.
Afraid too.
"That is going to create problems."
Galahad nodded.
"It already has."
They returned to the landing.
Kael looked at the three routes.
"Center?"
The guide did not answer.
Galahad waited.
Finally, the man nodded.
"Center."
They descended.
No one spoke for several minutes.
The mood had changed.
The Caldera had been dangerous before.
Now it felt watched.
Not by the supernatural voices.
By people.
Kael could not prove it.
He simply felt it in the way the guide kept checking behind them.
Milo eventually moved beside Kael.
Quietly.
That alone was unusual.
Then:
"I take back what I said."
Kael looked at him.
"About what?"
"Walter."
Despite everything, Kael almost smiled.
Milo continued.
"I don’t merely want to hear him talk my head off."
Another step.
"I want him to corner me."
Kael glanced over.
"Corner you?"
"Yes. Against a wall. No escape."
Sera, walking ahead, heard him.
"That sounds horrible."
Milo nodded earnestly.
"Exactly. I want the full experience."
Kael laughed softly.
Milo counted on his fingers.
"Stories I have already heard. Jokes with endings I can predict. Complaints about young people. Complaints about old people. Complaints about weather."
Kael said, "He would probably complain about you."
"I would encourage it."
A low vibration rolled through the floor.
Dust drifted from the ceiling.
Milo looked down.
Then back at Kael.
"I would personally carry him a chair."
Kael nodded solemnly.
"I would help."
Milo stared at him.
"You really do agree."
"Yes."
Milo looked toward Darius.
"Commander."
Darius did not turn.
"No."
"I had not asked anything."
"You were going to."
Milo looked wounded.
Kael laughed harder.
For a few seconds, even Sera smiled.
The armed guide looked back at them as if they had lost their minds.
Maybe they had.
Sometimes humor was simply refusing to let the place decide what everyone felt.
The moment ended when Iris raised her hand.
Everyone stopped.
She crouched.
Tracks.
Bootprints in ash.
Several.
Fresh.
The passage ahead widened.
The System activated.
[Directional Scan]
Humanoid heat signatures detected ahead
Count: 7–10
Distance: approximately 110–150 paces
Additional heat sources: unclear
Kael told Galahad.
"People ahead. Around eight."
The guide went still.
Galahad noticed.
"Your people?"
"Maybe."
"Maybe?"
"Different crews move."
Iris studied the bootprints.
"Three directions."
Galahad crouched beside her.
"Meaning?"
"Some came toward us. Some went deeper. Some crossed from the left passage."
"Recent?"
"Very."
Darius looked forward.
"Prepared?"
Iris examined the depth.
"Some running."
Milo sighed.
"I preferred walking strangers."
Sera raised her bow.
Then the System flashed.
Different.
Sharper.
[ENVIRONMENTAL WARNING]
Pressure increase detected
Subsurface movement accelerating
Possible vent rupture within local network
Kael looked around.
"Something is changing."
The guide’s expression tightened.
"What?"
"Pressure."
A sound came from somewhere ahead.
Not an explosion.
A deep metallic groan.
Then shouting.
Human.
More than one voice.
The guide started running.
Galahad caught his shoulder.
"Where are you going?"
"Lower gate."
"What lower gate?"
"If that sound was what I think it was, we need it open."
"Why?"
The man looked at everyone.
"Because the pressure channels run underneath this level."
That was not enough.
Kael asked, "What happens if the gate stays closed?"
The guide looked toward the passage.
"Steam finds another way out."
Milo stared.
"Through us?"
"Possibly."
"Finally. Confidence."
Galahad released the man.
"Lead."
They ran.
As much as Derren allowed.
The healer swore at every jolt.
Darius and the route worker carried the litter together now, adjusting their pace so it remained level.
Milo ran beside them.
Sera and Iris moved ahead with the guide.
Kael stayed near Galahad.
The passage opened abruptly.
The chamber beyond was enormous.
Not high.
Wide.
A network of iron walkways crossed above deep channels cut through the volcanic stone. Thick pipes ran along the walls and disappeared into the floor. Several large wheel mechanisms stood beside iron gates built directly into the channels.
People were everywhere.
Some pulling levers.
Others turning wheels.
Others simply shouting.
No one paid attention to Kael’s group at first.
Then the floor jumped.
A pipe burst.
Steam exploded across the left side of the chamber.
One worker screamed.
Milo reacted before anyone else.
His hand snapped up.
Mana caught the man around the chest and yanked him backward.
The steam struck where he had been standing.
Milo staggered from the effort.
Sera grabbed his shoulder.
"You said you were nearly empty."
"I keep finding emergency reserves."
"That is not how reserves work."
"It is today."
Kael looked toward the machinery.
The System flooded his vision.
[Structural / Environmental Scan]
Multiple pressure channels detected
Primary relief route: obstructed
Temperature differential increasing
Gate mechanism condition: degraded
Failure risk: HIGH
There.
Something the party might have missed.
Kael pointed toward the largest wheel on the far side.
"That gate isn’t relieving pressure!"
The armed guide stared at him.
"How do you—"
"No time!"
Galahad followed Kael’s direction.
"Can it be opened?"
One of the workers shouted from below.
"Wheel is locked!"
Darius lowered Derren’s litter.
The healer immediately crouched over him.
Galahad looked toward Kael.
"System?"
Kael almost smiled at the thought.
He could not say that.
Instead:
"I need closer."
"Take Commander. Scout with them. Archer high. Mobile protect Derren. I’ll organize here."
Everyone moved.
No hesitation.
Kael, Darius, and Iris crossed the first iron walkway.
Sera climbed a ladder to an elevated platform and immediately began scanning for threats.
Milo stayed near Derren and the healer, but his eyes were on the pipes now.
Mage.
He could feel what ordinary workers could not.
He frowned.
Then shouted.
"Kael!"
Kael looked back.
Milo pointed left.
"That pipe is carrying mana with the steam!"
Kael’s System updated.
[Magical pressure contamination detected]
Interesting.
Dangerous.
"Can you stabilize it?"
Milo stared at him.
"With what mana?"
A pipe screamed.
Milo sighed.
"Apparently yes."
He raised both hands.
This time his magic was not force.
Thin mana lines wrapped around the vibrating pipe.
Not sealing it.
Holding the joints together.
Milo gritted his teeth.
"I would appreciate urgency!"
Kael ran.
Iris reached the locked gate mechanism first.
She crouched beside the wheel housing.
"Chain jammed."
Darius looked at the massive wheel.
"Break it?"
Kael’s System flashed.
[Warning: forced destruction may lock gate permanently]
"No."
Darius stopped immediately.
Iris looked at Kael.
"Good call."
She pulled a knife.
Not for fighting.
For the packed ash wedged inside the mechanism.
Kael crouched beside her.
The System highlighted structural stress.
[Primary jam point: internal lower gear]
"Lower gear."
Iris reached beneath the housing.
"Can’t see it."
Darius lifted the entire outer housing slightly with one hand and Aura reinforcement.
Metal groaned.
Iris stared.
"Hold that."
"I am."
She reached farther inside.
Kael watched the System.
"Left."
Iris shifted.
"More."
She shifted again.
"Stop."
Her fingers found something.
A broken metal tooth.
She pulled.
Nothing.
Darius looked toward her.
"Need force?"
"Yes."
He lowered the housing enough to free one hand.
Iris wrapped a cloth around the broken tooth.
Darius pulled.
The metal piece came free.
The mechanism dropped.
Kael shouted, "Wheel!"
Three nearby workers grabbed it.
It moved half an inch.
Stopped.
Darius stepped beside them.
"Again."
They pushed.
Darius pushed.
The wheel turned.
One rotation.
Then another.
The iron gate beneath them began lifting.
Steam screamed through the opening.
Pressure hit the channel.
The entire chamber shook.
Kael’s System changed.
[Primary pressure relief restored]
Local failure risk decreasing
Not safe.
Decreasing.
Good.
Then Sera shouted from above.
"Movement!"
Everyone looked.
She pointed toward the far upper entrance.
Armed figures had appeared there.
Six.
No.
Eight.
Same iron insignia.
They were not helping with the machinery.
They were looking directly at Kael’s group.
The chamber changed.
Workers noticed.
Some stopped.
The armed guide swore under his breath.
Galahad looked at him.
"Problem?"
The man did not answer.
One of the figures at the upper entrance started down the stairs.
Slowly.
Deliberately.
The others remained behind.
Kael could not see the man’s face clearly yet.
Only heavy armor.
Broad shoulders.
No helmet.
The System offered no identity.
Good.
Kael did not have one either.
Darius moved slightly in front of him.
Not enough to look defensive.
Enough.
The man reached the lower platform.
His eyes passed over the workers.
Then the opened relief gate.
Then Darius.
Then Kael.
His expression changed at Kael.
Not recognition alone.
Dislike.
Immediate and unhidden.
The man stopped several paces away.
"You."
Kael frowned.
"Me?"
The stranger looked at the Imperial crest on Kael’s equipment.
"Prince."
Milo, still holding the failing pipe together with magic, called from across the chamber.
"Excellent observation. We established that several tunnels ago."
Kael almost turned.
Not now, Milo.
The stranger’s eyes shifted toward him.
Milo smiled despite the strain.
"Hello."
The stranger ignored him.
His gaze returned to Kael.
"You should not be here."
Galahad stepped between them.
"This is my expedition."
The man looked at him for the first time.
"Then your expedition should leave."
Galahad glanced toward Derren.
"We are trying."
"Not quickly enough."
The floor trembled again.
The man did not even look down.
That told Kael he was accustomed to this place.
Galahad studied him.
"Are you in charge here?"
The stranger’s mouth curved faintly.
"Here?"
He looked around the chamber.
"No."
Galahad waited.
The man offered nothing more.
No name.
No organization.
No explanation.
Good.
The mystery remained where it belonged.
Then Kael’s System flashed again.
[DIRECTIONAL WARNING]
Multiple large heat signatures approaching
Direction: eastern upper channel
Kael turned.
The eastern passage.
Not people.
Too hot.
Too large.
"Drakes."
Sera heard him.
"How many?"
The System tried to resolve.
4 confirmed. Additional movement behind.
"Four large. More behind."
The workers panicked.
Not wildly.
Practiced panic.
Several abandoned the upper walkways.
One shouted, "Close the east grate!"
Another answered, "It won’t hold!"
The broad-shouldered stranger looked toward the eastern passage.
For the first time, his expression changed.
Not fear.
Anger.
He looked toward the armed people behind him.
"Positions."
They moved.
Immediately.
Milo looked at Kael.
"Are we fighting with them now?"
Galahad drew his sword.
"We are fighting what reaches Derren."
"Excellent. Nuance."
The first mature drake burst through the eastern opening.
Then the second.
The chamber erupted into motion.
And whatever answers waited beneath the Caldera would have to wait again.
Because survival had arrived first.
