The applause slowly faded.

The recruits returned to their formations.

But something had changed.

Yesterday...

Many had come hoping to earn a position under a prince.

Today...

Many were beginning to believe in the prince himself.

Kael climbed back onto the wooden platform.

His expression remained composed.

He hadn't spoken to earn applause.

He had spoken because he believed it.

Darius noticed.

The old general smiled to himself.

"Good leaders don't chase loyalty."

"They earn it."

Edwin closed the ledger.

"Congratulations."

A murmur spread through the crowd.

"The endurance trial is officially complete."

Some recruits sighed in relief.

Others stretched sore muscles.

One mercenary laughed.

"I thought we'd finally get a sword tournament."

Several people agreed.

Darius stepped forward.

"You will."

The crowd smiled.

Then the old general continued.

"But not today."

The smiles disappeared.

"The next trial..."

He paused.

"...will determine who among you deserves to command."

Confused whispers spread.

"Command?"

"What does that mean?"

"We're not officers."

Kael stepped beside Darius.

"One day..."

"The Black Dragon Banner won't have fifty soldiers."

"It will have five thousand."

His gaze swept across the crowd.

"Those fifty standing beside me today..."

"...may one day command hundreds."

"...or thousands."

"If you cannot lead ten people..."

"You will never lead ten thousand."

The recruits nodded slowly.

That...

Made sense.

The Assignment

Walter and Roland began carrying large wooden chests onto the field.

Inside were strips of colored cloth.

Red.

Blue.

White.

Green.

Yellow.

Each recruit drew one at random.

Within minutes...

The eighteen hundred applicants had been divided into mixed groups.

No friends.

No family.

No noble houses.

Pure chance.

Victor frowned.

"I don't know anyone in this group."

Walter shrugged.

"Good."

Leon looked around.

His group included:

A fisherman.

A healer.

A former thief.

A noblewoman.

A hunter.

A baker.

None had ever met.

Marcus Wintermere whispered,

"This feels intentional."

Iris smiled.

"It is."

The Battlefield

The recruits followed Kael into a massive valley beyond the hills.

Waiting for them...

Was an enormous mock battlefield.

Wooden towers.

Small rivers.

Open fields.

Forest patches.

Stone ruins.

Even a small abandoned village had been constructed.

Nearly everyone stared in amazement.

"When did they build this?"

Walter laughed loudly.

"We didn't."

Everyone looked confused.

Darius answered.

"This battlefield has existed for nearly sixty years."

"I trained here."

"So did your fathers."

"So did many of the Empire's greatest generals."

The recruits suddenly became serious.

Kael climbed onto an observation tower.

"This..."

He spread his arms.

"...is your battlefield."

Edwin held up another scroll.

"Each group has one objective."

"Capture the enemy flag."

"Protect your own."

"You have until sunset."

"No killing."

"No permanent injuries."

"Everything else..."

Walter grinned.

"...is allowed."

The valley erupted with excitement.

A Familiar Face

As everyone prepared...

Kael noticed someone standing alone.

Unlike the others...

The man hadn't spoken all morning.

He quietly adjusted the straps on his armor.

Simple armor.

Nothing expensive.

His spear looked old.

But well maintained.

Kael walked over.

"What is your name?"

The man saluted.

"Damien Ravenmoor."

Kael recognized the surname immediately.

"Branch Bloodline?"

Damien nodded.

"My grandfather was the Emperor's younger brother."

"My family lost favor generations ago."

He smiled bitterly.

"We're still nobles on paper."

"Just not important ones."

"What brings you here?"

Damien looked toward the recruits.

"I heard..."

"...you judge ability."

"Not birth."

"I wanted to see if the rumors were true."

"And?"

"They were."

The system appeared.

The Trial Begins

BOOOOOONG!

The great bronze bell echoed across the valley.

Immediately...

Groups sprinted in every direction.

Some rushed straight toward enemy positions.

Others disappeared into the forests.

A few climbed hills to scout.

Victor's team charged headfirst.

As expected.

Leon stopped his own group.

"Wait."

Everyone looked at him.

"If we rush..."

"We'll lose."

The former thief frowned.

"So what's your plan?"

Leon studied the map.

Then pointed toward the river.

"We cross here."

The baker blinked.

"Why?"

"Because everyone expects us to use the bridge."

Across the battlefield...

Damien made a different decision.

"No one attacks."

His group stared.

"We're building defenses first."

Several recruits complained.

"We'll fall behind!"

Damien shook his head.

"No."

"We'll force them to attack us."

Meanwhile...

Victor laughed as his squad stormed directly toward another team's flag.

"This is easy!"

Seconds later...

Hidden ropes snapped upward.

WHOOSH!

Half his squad was lifted into the air by cleverly hidden nets.

The remaining members froze.

Then...

Wooden arrows rained from nearby trees.

Their "flag" was gone before Victor even realized another team had stolen it.

High above the battlefield...

Kael, Darius, Walter, Lily, Edwin, Grom, and Bram watched from the observation tower.

Walter burst into laughter.

"I knew he'd charge."

Lily smiled.

"He never even looked for traps."

Darius didn't laugh.

Instead...

He watched Leon.

Then Damien.

Then several groups working together despite being competitors.

Finally...

He looked toward Kael.

"You understand what this trial is really testing?"

Kael nodded.

"It isn't about winning."

Darius smiled.

"What is it about?"

Kael's eyes followed the battlefield below.

"It's about revealing the kind of leaders people naturally choose to follow."

The old general's smile widened.

"Exactly."

Far below...

None of the recruits noticed.

But hidden among the ruins...

A cloaked figure wearing dark leather armor observed the entire exercise through a crimson crystal.

Unlike the previous spy...

This one bore no Imperial insignia.

Instead...

A black serpent was stitched onto his cloak.

He quietly whispered,

"So..."

"The Tenth Prince is building officers..."

He smiled beneath his hood.

"Lord Marcus will want to hear about this."

The crystal flickered.

The message had already begun its journey.

The game between Kael and Marcus Vayne had entered a new phase.
