The Imperial System: Architect of an Empire
Chapter 41: The Emperor's SummonsThe Imperial Capital.
Aurelia.
The greatest city on the continent.
Its towering white walls stretched for nearly thirty miles, reinforced with enchanted stone that had protected the empire for over a thousand years.
Golden banners bearing the Imperial Dragon fluttered from every tower.
Thousands of soldiers patrolled the streets.
Merchants from every human kingdom filled the marketplaces.
Massive airships, powered by wind crystals and dragon cores, floated above the city, ferrying nobles and supplies between districts.
At the city's heart stood the symbol of human dominance—
The Imperial Palace.
A fortress built not to impress.
But to remind the world who ruled humanity.
The Hall of Dragons
The Imperial Court gathered every seventh day.
Today...
Every seat was occupied.
The throne room itself was enormous.
A crimson carpet stretched from the entrance all the way to the Imperial Throne.
Marble pillars carved into dragons supported the vaulted ceiling.
Each pillar represented one of the Empire's founding houses.
Along both sides of the hall sat the great nobles.
Dukes.
Marquises.
Counts.
Generals.
Ministers.
Royal advisers.
Above them, on elevated platforms, sat the imperial princes and princesses according to their rank in the line of succession.
Every seat had meaning.
Every placement represented centuries of tradition.
Near the center...
Sat, Princess Seraphine Asterion.
Third in the succession.
Daughter of the reigning Empress.
Twenty-three years old.
Elegant.
Intelligent.
Dangerously ambitious.
Her silver-and-gold gown reflected the colors of the Imperial Family.
She watched everything with calm, calculating eyes.
To the court...
She was known as the Golden Rose.
To her enemies...
She was known as something else.
The Smiling Viper.
Beside her sat the Crown Prince.
Prince Cassian Asterion.
First in succession.
Calm.
Reserved.
A military genius.
Unlike Seraphine...
He rarely spoke.
When he did...
People listened.
The Second Prince.
Prince Lucien Asterion.
A scholar.
Master strategist.
Beloved by the bureaucracy.
Feared by politicians.
The Fourth Prince.
Prince Alaric Asterion.
Commander of the Eastern Legions.
Hot-tempered.
Proud.
One of the strongest Aura Knights in the Empire.
Several more princes and princesses occupied the remaining seats.
One seat...
Remained empty.
The Tenth Prince.
Kael Asterion.
Whispers echoed throughout the court.
"Has anyone heard from Blackwood?"
"They say he's rebuilding the territory."
"I heard he recruited mercenaries."
"They also say he lost his mind."
The great doors suddenly opened.
A palace herald entered carrying a sealed scroll.
He knelt in the center of the throne room.
"Your Majesty."
"I bring an urgent report from Lord Blackwood."
The murmuring stopped immediately.
At the far end of the hall...
Upon the Dragon Throne...
Sat was the ruler of the empire.
Emperor Augustus Aurelius Asterion.
His black-and-gold robes flowed over the throne like liquid night.
His hair had begun turning silver with age.
His face bore the scars of countless wars.
His mere presence filled the hall with pressure.
Even powerful nobles instinctively lowered their eyes.
The emperor didn't need to raise his voice.
Authority surrounded him naturally.
"Read."
The single word echoed throughout the chamber.
The herald broke the seal.
His voice trembled.
"To His Imperial Majesty..."
"The Black Dragon Trials have concluded successfully."
"The Tenth Prince has officially established a private military force consisting of fifty founding members."
Several ministers nodded.
Nothing unusual so far.
Then...
The herald continued.
"Among those appointed..."
"...is one goblin elder..."
"...identified as Grom Ironfang."
Silence.
Absolute silence.
It lasted only a heartbeat.
Then...
The court exploded.
"A goblin?"
"Impossible!"
"Has he lost his senses?"
"A monster inside imperial lands?"
"This is treason!"
Several nobles rose from their seats.
One elderly duke slammed his cane against the marble floor.
"Our ancestors shed blood to keep monsters outside these walls!"
"And now a prince welcomes one into the Empire?"
Princess Seraphine slowly smiled.
Exactly as she expected.
She didn't speak immediately.
She allowed the outrage to grow.
Only then did she rise gracefully from her seat.
The room became quiet almost instantly.
"Father."
She bowed respectfully toward the Emperor.
"If these reports are true..."
She paused.
"...then my younger brother has endangered the Empire."
Several nobles nodded.
"Our laws are clear."
"No non-human race may reside within Imperial territory."
"They are to remain beyond our borders."
She slowly turned toward the ministers.
"If exceptions begin today..."
"What happens tomorrow?"
"Will beastmen march through our cities?"
"Will the undead demand citizenship?"
"Will demons ask for noble titles?"
Laughter echoed from several corners of the court.
"The law exists for a reason."
"We protect humanity."
"We don't weaken it."
Across the hall...
A minister stood.
"Her Highness speaks wisely."
Another nodded.
"The people will panic."
A third added,
"If word spreads..."
"Merchants may avoid Blackwood altogether."
Then...
A calm voice interrupted.
"I disagree."
Every head turned.
Prince Cassian.
The Prince.
He remained seated.
His expression was unreadable.
Seraphine raised an eyebrow.
"Brother?"
Cassian looked toward the herald.
"Did the report mention this goblin harming anyone?"
The herald quickly checked the scroll.
"No, Your Highness."
"In fact..."
"He reportedly prevented further bloodshed during the trials."
Cassian nodded once.
"Then we judge actions."
"Not rumors."
Seraphine folded her hands.
"So you'd trust a goblin?"
Cassian answered without hesitation.
"I trust evidence."
The courtroom became divided.
Some agreed.
Others didn't.
A powerful laugh echoed across the chamber.
Everyone turned toward the source.
Prince Alaric.
The Fourth Prince.
He leaned back in his chair.
"This is ridiculous."
"A goblin?"
"I don't care if it saved a hundred people."
"It's still a goblin."
"If Kael wants monsters..."
"He can keep them."
"But they stay in Blackwood."
Another voice joined the debate.
The Minister of War.
General Hector Valen.
"If this Grom truly possesses the reputation described..."
"He may actually strengthen Blackwood."
Seraphine frowned.
"General."
"You support this?"
The old soldier answered honestly.
"I support results."
"If the goblin proves loyal..."
"I care more about what he accomplishes than what ears he was born with."
The debate grew louder.
The court split into two factions.
Those who believed strength mattered.
Those who believed blood mattered.
Throughout the entire discussion...
The emperor remained silent.
Watching.
Listening.
Judging.
Finally...
He spoke.
The room fell completely still.
"Where..."
His deep voice echoed across the hall.
"...is the summons officer?"
A man in black robes hurried forward.
"Your Majesty."
The emperor looked directly into his eyes.
"I want the Tenth Prince..."
"...to stand before this court."
No emotion crossed his face.
"No excuses."
"No delays."
"Deliver my command personally."
The officer bowed deeply.
"At once, Your Majesty."
The Emperor leaned back upon the Dragon Throne.
His eyes drifted toward the empty seat reserved for Kael.
For a brief moment...
Something almost resembling pride appeared in his gaze.
Then it vanished.
Unknown to everyone in the room...
He had already read another report the night before.
One that hadn't been shared with the court.
A report written by Darius himself.
It contained only one sentence.
"Your son is becoming the ruler this empire will one day need."
The emperor folded the report inside his sleeve.
He told no one.
Not yet.
Far away...
In Blackwood...
A lone rider bearing the Imperial Dragon Banner galloped through the front gates.
The guards immediately recognized the crimson seal hanging from his saddle.
An Imperial Summons.
The rider didn't slow down.
He rode straight toward Blackwood Manor.
The storm that had begun with one goblin...
Had finally reached Kael's doorstep.
