The forge fell silent.

Only the crackling of burning coal disturbed the stillness.

Commander Aldric Vayne remained on one knee before Kael.

His ancient armor bore the Imperial Dragon upon its breastplate.

Though faded by time...

It had been polished with meticulous care.

Not a speck of rust could be found.

Walter looked between Kael and the old commander.

"...I feel like someone owes us an explanation."

A few Black Dragons nodded in agreement.

Even Darius couldn't hide his confusion.

Kael stepped forward.

"Rise, Commander."

Aldric slowly stood.

Despite the white in his beard and the wrinkles on his face...

His posture remained perfectly straight.

Like a spear planted firmly into the earth.

"You know who I am."

Kael said.

"But I don't know you."

The old knight smiled faintly.

"That is expected."

"You were only a child the last time I entered the capital."

Darius stepped closer.

"I served in the Fourth Legion."

"I remember your name."

"You disappeared twenty years ago."

Aldric nodded.

"I did."

"No..."

He corrected himself.

"I was forgotten."

A Fortress Abandoned

Kael looked around the forge.

"The journal in the chapel..."

"It was yours."

"It was."

"You wrote that you waited over seven hundred days for orders."

"I did."

Walter frowned.

"Why didn't you leave?"

The old commander's answer came without hesitation.

"Because my emperor ordered me to guard Ironridge."

Silence filled the room.

"My duty did not end..."

"...simply because everyone else forgot it."

Several younger Black Dragons looked at one another.

None of them could imagine waiting two years...

Completely alone.

What Really Happened

Kael unfolded the Emperor's map.

"Why was Ironridge abandoned?"

Aldric's expression darkened.

"It wasn't abandoned."

"It was sacrificed."

Everyone became still.

"Twenty years ago..."

"The eastern trade route collapsed."

"Taxes fell."

"Nobles argued that Ironridge was too expensive to maintain."

"So the Imperial Council voted."

"They withdrew funding."

"They withdrew supplies."

"They withdrew soldiers."

Walter blinked.

"They just..."

"...left?"

"They reassigned everyone."

Aldric answered.

"Everyone..."

"...except me."

Darius clenched his fist.

"No replacement?"

"No."

"No messenger?"

"No."

"No retirement order?"

"No."

Kael's eyes narrowed.

"So..."

"You stayed."

Aldric nodded once.

"I swore an oath."

An Oath

The old commander walked toward the forge.

Resting upon the wall was an old Imperial spear.

Its blade had been sharpened countless times.

The wooden shaft had been replaced again and again.

Only the engraved dragon remained original.

He picked it up carefully.

"My father carried this spear."

"My grandfather before him."

"We have guarded Imperial borders for five generations."

He looked at Kael.

"I wasn't protecting a building."

"I was protecting my oath."

No one spoke.

Not even Walter.

The Missing Soldiers

Kael finally asked the question that had bothered him since arriving.

"The footprints."

"The flowers."

"The forge."

"You've been living here alone?"

Aldric shook his head.

"For the past eight years."

Walter frowned.

"What happened before that?"

The old commander's face became grim.

"The fortress wasn't empty."

"We had survivors."

"Nearly sixty."

"And then?"

Kael asked.

"They disappeared."

Silence.

"One..."

"Then another."

"No screams."

"No blood."

"No signs of struggle."

"They simply vanished."

Leon spoke for the first time.

"The merchants weren't lying."

"No."

Aldric answered.

"They weren't."

Beneath Ironridge

Kael remembered the journal.

"You wrote..."

"'Do not descend beneath Ironridge.'"

The old commander's eyes changed.

For the first time...

Fear appeared.

"There is something beneath this fortress."

"I don't know what it is."

"I've never seen it."

"But every disappearance..."

"Every strange voice..."

"Every nightmare..."

"Always began underground."

Walter slowly crossed his arms.

"I knew this place was cursed."

Aldric looked at him.

"It isn't cursed."

"It's sealed."

Meanwhile...

Dragonspire Palace.

The Imperial Court assembled.

Today's audience wasn't about succession.

Nor taxes.

Nor war.

The Emperor sat upon the Dragon Throne.

Below him stood the princes and princesses currently in the capital.

Among them...

The First Prince, Cassian.

Princess Elena.

The Third Princesses

Several younger royals.

The chancellor stepped forward.

"Your Majesty."

"Reports have arrived from the royal assignments."

The emperor nodded.

"Read them."

"The First Prince successfully liberated the Ironfang mining settlements."

"Three hundred and twelve civilians rescued."

"Minimal military casualties."

A murmur of approval spread through the court.

"The fourth princess successfully negotiated new trade agreements with the Kingdom of Valoria."

"The Imperial Treasury projects increased revenue within the year."

Another wave of approval.

"The ninth prince uncovered corruption among customs officials in the southern ports."

"Seven officials arrested."

One noble smiled proudly.

"My grandson serves under him."

The Emperor listened quietly.

He praised no one.

Criticized no one.

Every assignment mattered.

Every child was being tested.

Finally...

The chancellor reached the last report.

"Tenth Prince Kael."

"Successfully defended Ashfall Village."

"Investigating the eastern frontier under Your Majesty's direct orders."

Some nobles scoffed.

"Another village?"

"A prince shouldn't waste time chasing monsters."

Others disagreed.

"He saved Imperial citizens."

The debate quickly filled the hall.

The Emperor simply watched.

Listening.

Learning.

Just as he expected his children to do.

Back at Ironridge

Night had fallen.

The Black Dragons gathered inside the old command hall.

Maps covered the central table.

Aldric pointed toward the deepest section of the fortress.

"There."

"The old underground vaults."

"No one who entered..."

"...ever returned."

Kael looked around the room.

His companions.

His soldiers.

The old commander.

Each of them waited for his decision.

Kael finally spoke.

"We won't rush in."

He looked at Darius.

"Tomorrow, we search the fortress from top to bottom."

"Every room."

"Every tunnel."

"We learn its history before we descend."

Aldric smiled.

For the first time in many years...

Someone had chosen patience over recklessness.

Perhaps...

This prince truly was different.

Far below the fortress...

Beyond ancient stone walls...

Beyond doors sealed centuries ago...

Something shifted in the darkness.

Not awake.

Not yet.

But it had felt something.

The presence...

Of Imperial blood.
