The Imperial System: Architect of an Empire
Chapter 73: Beneath the EmpireThe sound of footsteps echoed through the ancient staircase.
Tap...
Tap...
Tap...
Torchlight danced across smooth stone walls.
Unlike the fortress above...
Nothing here had crumbled.
No cracks.
No moss.
No signs of age.
It was as if time itself had refused to enter this place.
Walter ran his fingers across the wall.
"This doesn't make any sense."
Leon nodded.
"The fortress above is falling apart."
"But down here..."
He looked around.
"It looks newly built."
Commander Aldric's expression remained grim.
"I've stood guard over this place for twenty years."
"I've never crossed this threshold."
Walter looked at him in disbelief.
"You never got curious?"
Aldric gave a quiet smile.
"Every day."
"But curiosity and duty are not the same thing."
Kael glanced at the old commander.
The more he learned about Aldric...
The more he understood why soldiers respected men like him.
The First Chamber
The staircase finally ended.
Before them stood an enormous circular chamber.
Nearly a hundred feet across.
Eight massive stone pillars reached toward a domed ceiling.
Each pillar was carved with a different symbol.
A sword.
A scale.
A dragon.
A crown.
A tree.
A wave.
A flame.
And...
A snowflake.
Kael stopped.
His eyes lingered on the final pillar.
The snowflake.
Something about it felt...
Familiar.
Not because of his system.
Because of the dormant memories tied to his mother's bloodline.
He couldn't explain it.
He simply recognized the symbol.
Grom noticed.
"You've seen that before?"
Kael slowly shook his head.
"No."
"But..."
"It feels familiar."
The feeling quickly passed.
He didn't mention it again.
The Hall of Names
Beyond the chamber stretched a long hallway.
Both walls were covered with engraved names.
Thousands of them.
Every few feet another name appeared.
Perfectly preserved.
Walter leaned closer.
"These are people."
Leon frowned.
"They all have titles."
Darius read one aloud.
General Lucien Voss
Defender of the Eastern Pass.
Another.
Lady Selene Arctis
Keeper of the Northern Seal.
Another.
Commander Hector Draven
Guardian of the Southern Gate.
None of the names appeared in modern Imperial history.
Kael spoke quietly.
"Remember them."
"If they're here..."
"They mattered."
The System Responds
A blue notification appeared.
Historical Site
Hall of Oaths
Records Preserved:
2,841
Known by Modern Empire:
17
Kael frowned.
Only seventeen?
More than two thousand people...
Completely erased from history.
Someone had rewritten the Empire's past.
A Lesson
Walter broke the silence.
"Why would anyone erase heroes?"
Grom answered before Kael could.
"Because history..."
"...belongs to the people writing it."
No one argued.
Dragonspire Palace
Meanwhile...
Inside the Imperial Academy...
Several princes and princesses trained together.
Wooden swords clashed.
Young nobles watched from the sidelines.
The twelve-prince knocked his opponent backward.
Cheers erupted.
Watching from a balcony...
The First Prince folded his arms.
A young knight approached him.
"Your Highness."
"The younger princes have requested a match."
Cassian smiled politely.
"Only if they're prepared to lose."
The young knight laughed.
"They insisted."
Moments later...
Cassian entered the training grounds.
He picked up a plain wooden sword.
No ceremony.
No boasting.
Three younger knights attacked together.
Fast.
Coordinated.
Well-trained.
Less than thirty seconds later...
All three lay on the ground.
Not injured.
Simply defeated.
Cassian offered each of them a hand.
"Again."
One knight groaned.
"We just lost."
Cassian smiled.
"Then learn why."
Watching from above...
The emperor quietly nodded.
Magnus stood beside him.
"The First Prince inspires improvement."
The Emperor agreed.
"He leads by example."
He looked toward the sparring yard.
"But even the strongest sword..."
"...cannot solve every problem."
The Sealed Door
Back beneath Ironridge...
The corridor finally ended.
Standing before them...
Was a pair of enormous black stone doors.
No handles.
No hinges.
Only one inscription carved across the center.
The language was ancient.
Unknown.
Walter looked toward Grom.
"You can read that?"
Grom studied it for a long moment.
Then he slowly shook his head.
"No."
"It's older than the Goblin script."
Aldric stepped closer.
"I've seen these symbols."
"When I was young."
"In old military records."
"What do they say?"
Kael asked.
The old commander traced the carving with one finger.
"I only remember part of it."
He closed his eyes.
Trying to recall.
Then he spoke.
'Only those who carry the burden of the realm... may seek the truth beyond this gate.'
Silence followed.
Walter scratched his head.
"That's... surprisingly dramatic."
Leon smirked.
"I was expecting 'Keep Out.'"
Even Kael smiled.
The tension eased for a moment.
The Imperial Seal
Near the base of the door...
Kael noticed something.
A circular indentation.
Its shape...
Matched the Imperial Dragon engraved on the ring every prince and princess received at birth.
Walter noticed it too.
"You don't think..."
Kael removed the ring from his finger.
He hesitated.
This wasn't simply opening a door.
It was accepting whatever responsibility had been hidden beneath Ironridge for centuries.
He looked back at everyone.
"No matter what happens..."
"We leave together."
No one objected.
Kael stepped forward.
He placed the Imperial ring into the ancient seal.
For a heartbeat...
Nothing happened.
Then...
A deep rumble echoed throughout the underground halls.
BOOOOOOM...
Dust drifted from the ceiling.
Blue lines of light spread across the stone doors.
The ancient mechanism had awakened.
Slowly...
Very slowly...
The doors began to open.
Cold air poured from the darkness beyond.
Not the stale air of an abandoned ruin.
Fresh.
Alive.
As if the chamber beyond had been waiting.
The system flashed brighter than ever before.
Hidden Chamber Unlocked
The First Vault of Ironridge
Authorization Accepted:
Imperial Blood Confirmed
The doors opened just enough for torchlight to slip inside.
Kael took one step forward.
Then stopped.
Rows upon rows of stone statues stretched into the darkness.
Each depicted an armored warrior kneeling, sword planted before them.
Hundreds.
Perhaps thousands.
None had moved in centuries.
Or so they believed.
Far in the back of the chamber...
One statue's finger twitched.
