Despite what had recently transpired, Calidora didn’t seem to be worried at all.
She had full faith in Rex.
Nobody, not even the Lunirich Gods, would be able to touch her as long as he was alive and breathing.
In fact, when push comes to shove, and Rex can only rescue one of them from death, Calidora was quite confident that she would be at the very top of Rex’s list. She was carrying his child, so there’s no other choice but her.
And for that, she didn’t need to be afraid at all.
Rex won’t let her die no matter what.
Gently and lovingly—Calidora stroked her bulging belly and watched the small vampiric wings on her waist flutter, A sign that the child inside was enjoying her strokes even through the skin. "Once you’re born, you will be his second dearest after me."
Calidora looked up again, watching the emerald hue encompassing the entire world.
It spread everywhere at a rapid pace, moving behind the clouds and the fractures that marred the sky.
"Have you ever been loved by someone?" She suddenly asked.
"Hm?" the Dark Elven servant paused, and then she realized Calidora was talking to her. "I have—Your Highness. I am fortunate enough to have met my soulmate earlier than most. Even after a hundred years of marriage, he still loves me the same as when I first met him."
"Who has he fought for you?"
"I’m sorry?"
"I said who has he fought for you? Who has he taken down to keep you safe?"
"... I guess a few neighbours and several Tigermen through skirmishes."
"Then you haven’t been really loved by someone," Calidora glanced at the servant, and then raised her index finger to point at the fractured sky. "He is up there in another realm, loving me harder than he has ever been. He is fighting against Gods to protect me. That—is love."
"I can only dream of being loved that much, Your Highness," the Dark Elven servant bowed.
"Of course, I paid the price of blood to make him love me. You can never afford to pay such a price."
Outside of the Calidora’s bedchamber.
Several servants stood in a quiet line nearby, four of them to be exact, two on the door’s wall while the other two were on the opposite wall. There was another man who stood right beside the door, almost like he was guarding it.
Beside him were two Elven healers who were helping him recover from his wounds.
His body bore clear wounds and traces of hostile energy that refused to leave and let his body regenerate.
Around his feet, dried patches of blood darkened the floor.
Kyran had been standing on guard even after he managed to fend off the crimson horde’s last attack.
He had already sent word to Flunra with Naela’s location—asking him to retrieve her from that desolate place and return her to the Dark Elf Kingdom for proper treatment and rest. Not because his condition was too critical to pick her up.
If he wanted to, he could pick her up on his own.
But because of the argument he had with Naela that still played on repeat in his mind, refusing to quiet.
Kyran could feel Naela’s feelings like a warm sun against the harsh coldness of his heart. It was real—genuine. Her warmth and gentleness were strong enough to melt his heart, and slowly, he also developed feelings for her.
And naturally, the bond between them grew stronger.
However, he was mistaken about one thing.
It was true that Naela, though betrothed to him, loved him regardless because of their first encounter in the forest that solidified him as her soulmate. But even though that was the case, she carried a heavy responsibility to her people on her back.
Rex was the Alpha and the Emperor.
Everyone he considered dear, especially his women, should be the utmost priority.
Just like earlier, during a big crisis, everyone within the empire should prioritize those women.
Kyran had made the wrong choice—coming to check on Naela when his responsibility lay with Adhara, Evelyn, and Gistella. The sight of him abandoning his post struck Naela to her core. A cold fear followed as she was worried Rex would punish her people.
He would see her as a corrupting influence on Kyran, and the Dark Elves would pay the price.
For Kyran, his decision to check on her was an act of love.
But for Naela, his decision ignited an existential crisis that threatened the Dark Elves.
As much as he wanted his love with Naela to be like a novel, Kyran learned that abandoning everything for Naela wasn’t what she wanted. She was aware that their relationship was genuine, but she also knew that it was also political.
Due to that, Kyran would stay here to guard Calidora until the others returned.
Naela wouldn’t find it sweet for him to go back and pick her up.
She would have preferred it if he had put her people’s safety as the priority, and only come to her in the spare moments afterward when he wasn’t busy. Kyran had understood that too late, but now that he did, he wouldn’t make that mistake again.
’I was blinded by rage,’ He thought inside. ’I will not be blind anymore. I will try to understand you.’
Just then, Kyran caught something from his periphery.
It came from the outside.
He raised his hand, gesturing for the Elven healers to stop for a second and then walked with measured steps along the corridor, approaching the embrasure on the edge. Then, he looked up and saw the green spreading through the sky.
Despite his sensitive senses, he could sense no energy coming from this green hue.
But his intuition told him that this was Rex’s doing.
Not Rex’s direct power, but something that he did in the upper realms to keep them safer.
’His enemies are many and powerful. No matter what he does, they will never stop coming for him. Not a sliver of chance.’ Kyran pressed his hand over his heart, and his face twisted grimly. ’I’m aware that those enemies are targeting Rex, and that puts us in danger. But we choose to be Silverstars. We chose this power.
’And yet, he’s the one carrying the whole weight. He’s the one protecting us all the time.’
Kyran felt ashamed.
He clutched his heart and gritted his teeth in utter shame.
Regardless of what happened, Rex had never strayed from his duties. Never.
And that felt like salt to an open wound for Kyran.
Just earlier, when he ran back from the frontline to check on Naela, he could feel a sharp sting inside his heart. It almost felt like a searing sword was stabbing through his heart. His mind was too clouded with anger at that moment, so he didn’t pay it any mind.
But now he realized that he had wronged Rex, wronged the Alpha.
As the Beta Enforcer and the Left Hand, he should never stray from his duty, but he did.
’I need to take risks,’ Kyran looked down at his hand—and watched the icy-blue aura that sizzled from his palm. Despite the incident with the Blood Moon, he got something out of it. Unexpected, but it was much welcomed. ’And I have the way to do it. I need to enter that ice dimension again...’
Outside the castle, Adhara was going around Dargena City to check on the people.
She was also heavily wounded.
Even though her wounds would normally regenerate rapidly—the vicious energy from a Demigod was too strong for her to disperse with her own energy. It would take time until she could recover from the battle, and she was fine with it.
Not to mention, the sight of her being wounded but still going around the city was mesmerizing.
All citizens who saw her felt touched that she cared that much to ignore her wounds to check on them.
Adhara noticed it, and she was happy that she could strike awe in them.
’Evelyn won’t be here for the foreseeable future, I’m guessing.’ She thought, hauling an Awakened free from the rubble like it was nothing. ’Right now, the empire needs a strong figure who can reassure them. A presence like Evelyn. I only hope that I’m enough to fill that role for the time being.’
She was annoyed that Rex didn’t pick him as the Empress.
But she knew that it was for a reason, which was proven by how effortlessly Evelyn had become beloved by the people. Like she was the most precious thing—in the empire. Some would even side with Evelyn more than Rex, and that’s because of her presence.
Adhara knew she could never replicate that warmth, that sense of being cherished.
However, she didn’t need to.
She also has an effect on the people—a presence that made them feel safe.
It was her task to protect them as the Female Alpha while the Alpha wasn’t present, after all.
And she hoped that it was enough.
"Go to the hospital to be checked," Adhara instructed firmly. "Make sure you’re not suffering from an internal wound."
"Yes, Lady Adhara," the Awakened nodded repeatedly. "Thank you."
Adhara watched him walk away, heading straight to where the mass had gathered in the distance.
Her gaze swept across the city, where buildings were visibly mending themselves without a single hand lifted to help. The castle drew energy from the surrounding land and when the city suffered wounds like these, released it, knitting stone and wood back together as if the damage had never been.
Of course, it prioritized the castle.
But now that the castle was already fully mended, the shattered buildings around began to be repaired.
Dargena City should have held fine. Nearly every affiliated force had banded together in time—but the crimson horde’s final attack caught them completely off guard. Worse, it easily pierced through the city’s defenses and the castle’s barrier as though neither existed.
Had it not been for Kyran, the castle would’ve gotten obliterated.
And alongside it would be Calidora.
It was fortunate that Kyran got in the way in time, as Adhara was nowhere near the castle.
Even though the attack itself had been blocked and absorbed by Kyran—the shockwave produced was powerful enough to wreak havoc on its own. And with every defense shattered, nothing stood between that force and the heart of Dargena City.
Fortunately, someone had activated the Servant of Lunar Formation—most likely Ryze.
One of the defensive formations of the city that empowered everyone inside.
Due to that, the damage to the people was minimal at best.
Adhara sighed and looked skyward, remembering the incident earlier before the crimson horde’s attack.
"Don’t worry, Rex. We managed to survive the attack—so I hope you can focus on what you were doing up there,’ she muttered inwardly and closed her eyes. Above everything, she was happy that the entire pack and forces were able to fend off the attack of a God without Rex’s help.
That alone was proof that they were an incredibly powerful nation.
Just as Adhara opened her eyes, she noticed the emerald hue spreading in the sky.
Her body tensed up instinctively, thinking that it was another attack from the Lunirich Gods.
But her instincts soon whispered that the green energy unfurling across the sky was not a threat. It wasn’t hostile. It felt almost protective, as if it had come to stand with them. And of course—her mind naturally went to Rex.
For a phenomenon like this to happen, it must be his doing.
No one else can be responsible for something like this.
Rex was furious enough at the Lunirich God’s attack, so this might be something he did in response.
Adhara watched it spread without pause, reaching all the way to the horizon and beyond.
A smile crept to her lips.
"Considering that you’re in an entirely foreign realm, I thought it’d take time for you to do anything to help us." She muttered, and then shook her head in disbelief. "But I forgot how unhinged you can be. I am sure it’s hard enough up there, so don’t push yourself too hard. We’re already safe."
