Chapter 1351: Chapter 1351: Too Many Entanglements
Hearing that answer, Lin Tian and Davis were both a little dejected. But Davis still refused to give up and asked, "Where is that place? Is the Luban Box still there?"
Before Zhang Ya’Er could answer, Lin Tian spoke first, "That place is a private residence, belonging to a very old family on the Celestial Dragon Continent, surname Wang."
Davis suddenly came to a realization. "Mr. Lin, you mean Wang Daoran is from this ancient family?"
Lin Tian nodded lightly and went on, "From what I can guess, this matter won’t be that simple. The Wang Family is an ancient clan, and the Luban Lock is also very old. Do you think there might be some kind of connection between the two?"
Davis thought for quite a long while and still had no clue, so he hurriedly asked, "Mr. Lin, could you explain it a bit more clearly?"
"I just said, it’s only my guess. Maybe on this matter, your old Patriarch knows more than I do. Why don’t you go ask him?" Lin Tian said.
Davis rejected the idea almost without thinking. With a wry smile he said, "Our Patriarch isn’t someone who’s easy to talk to. Even if he knows, he won’t tell me. Besides, my job is to bring the Luban Lock back."
Even when he was forcing a bitter smile, Davis’s expression carried a hint of earnestness, looking very much like a man determined to fulfill his mission.
Lin Tian chuckled softly, patted him on the shoulder and said, "Your Patriarch must really like subordinates like you."
Davis gave another bitter smile. "You’re mistaken. If he liked me, he wouldn’t have let me take this assignment."
After a few more pleasantries, Davis no longer had any reason to stay. He said his goodbyes to Lin Tian, then looked at Zhang Ya’Er and said, "Amy, see you next time."
Zhang Ya’Er called him back and said, "Mr. Davis, you should at least leave a phone number. If you want to ask about anything later, you can contact me anytime."
Davis was naturally pleased. After the two exchanged mobile numbers, he left. He could tell this man and woman still had things to say.
...
After seeing Davis off, Lin Tian went back inside, sat down on the sofa, picked up an apple and a small knife, and began slowly peeling it.
"The doctor said you can’t eat anything within twenty-four hours after gastric lavage. You can only get IV fluids and drink some congee to keep your strength up. Stop peeling." Zhang Ya’Er said, leaning against the headboard.
After listening, Lin Tian replied blandly, "I know all that. I’m peeling it for myself."
"Oh." Zhang Ya’Er answered softly, with no sign of displeasure on her face.
The apple peel never broke from start to finish, and only at the end did it all drop into the trash can in one go.
Lin Tian opened his mouth and took a bite. A very crisp "crack" sounded.
"Is it sweet?" Zhang Ya’Er asked.
"Pretty sweet, and juicy too. Did Li buy it?"
Zhang Ya’Er replied, "I hardly have any relatives or friends. It should be him."
"What a pity." Lin Tian murmured.
Zhang Ya’Er looked at him thoughtfully. "What’s a pity?"
"It’s a pity he has a girlfriend now. Otherwise I’d actually think you two are quite a match." After Lin Tian finished, he examined Zhang Ya’Er’s face carefully and said, "Even though your looks aren’t on the same level."
"Pff~" Zhang Ya’Er burst out laughing. "Then why say we’re a match? Don’t you think I’m several years older than him, too old?"
Lin Tian shook his head. "No. That’s not any kind of obstacle, at least not in my eyes."
"Even if age isn’t an obstacle, do you really think I’d go for his type? All withdrawn, like a block of wood." Zhang Ya’Er sighed lightly. "A complete bookworm!"
Sure enough, there was at least one woman who’d been fooled by Li’s wooden exterior.
"That’s how he makes you feel?" Lin Tian asked, smiling.
Zhang Ya’Er didn’t answer. Instead she looked at Lin Tian warily and asked, "What are you up to? Trying to play matchmaker for your buddy?"
"No. It’s just that when you look at him, your expression is a bit different, maybe betraying what you really think." Lin Tian said casually.
Zhang Ya’Er’s fair hand slipped out from under the blanket. She touched her delicate face and asked, "My expression?"
"Yeah. Gentle, like a little wife. So you like warm guys, huh." Lin Tian said with a smile.
Zhang Ya’Er tucked her hand back under the blanket, wrinkled her nose and said, "Do I? Is it that obvious?"
"Pretty obvious."
"So what? It’s just a bit of a crush, that’s all. You said it yourself, he already has a girlfriend. It is kind of a pity." Zhang Ya’Er said that, but there wasn’t the slightest hint of "pity" on her face.
Some people have been through too much. You can’t trust the expressions on their faces anymore.
For example, the first time Lin Tian met Zhang Ya’Er, when she chopped off DS’s finger, her face was completely calm. And later, when they went for barbecue together, she kept flirting, but in fact that was her way of keeping a certain distance from Lin Tian.
Now her face was calm; what she was really thinking, Lin Tian had no way of knowing.
Zhang Ya’Er took a deep breath, turned her head and asked, "Don’t you want to know why I didn’t tell you I’d seen the Luban Lock?"
Lin Tian took another bite of the apple. Chewing as he spoke, he said, "I’m waiting for you to say it, aren’t I? If you don’t, I won’t force you."
From Lin Tian’s tone, Zhang Ya’Er knew that a bit of distance had already formed between them. No longer the close rapport of a talent scout and his thousand-mile steed.
Because of her secrecy, Lin Tian had become very polite, to the point of not even asking proactively. For Zhang Ya’Er, that was not good news.
With a smile, Zhang Ya’Er said, "It’s actually nothing much. It’s just that this whole thing is too big, and I don’t want you dragged into it." She went on, "Once my body recovers, I’ll leave this place and go somewhere no one knows me, try a new life. Like you said—find a warm guy."
Lin Tian hadn’t expected her to say that. He tossed the apple core into the trash can and said, "Whatever kind of life you choose, I’ll respect and support you. But what do you mean by ’too big’? You didn’t finish what you were saying just now, did you?"
Zhang Ya’Er nodded. "I didn’t. The Wang Family is just too enormous—so big it makes you feel small. And whatever’s inside that Luban Lock definitely isn’t ordinary. I have the feeling that besides the Wang Family and the card arena in Tianya Haijiao City, there are other people eyeing it too. Those few days I spent at the Wang Family ancestral home, there was a lot of commotion, like someone had broken in. I didn’t tell Davis all this just now because it would be pointless; he’d throw himself at it no matter what, like a moth to the flame."
Lin Tian neither agreed nor disagreed. He only asked calmly, "Who else is eyeing it?"
Zhang Ya’Er shook her head. "I’m just a small fry; what I know is limited. But because of that Luban Lock, plenty of people have already died. I don’t want you caught up in it too."
"Heh, don’t worry. I’m not interested in that thing." Lin Tian chuckled softly and nodded.
