Step, step—

The dry sound of footsteps echoed through the large lecture hall used by the second years.

It was none other than Professor Harrid, known as Lumene’s Wailing Wall.

At his appearance, the entire second-year class wore tense expressions.

Today was the day of a special Hero Studies class.

The person conducting that class was  Professor Harrid.

Since advancing to their second year, the students had definitely had fewer occasions to meet Harrid.

Even so, Harrid remained an object of fear for the second-year students.

It was while the entire class was sitting tense.

"Carr Thomas."

"Ye-yes!"

Jump—!

At Harrid’s low voice, Carr sprang up from his seat.

"Wake up Eliza Hergin next to you."

At those words, Carr flinched and looked to his side.

There, Eliza was nodding off like a sick chick.

Normally, in other professors’ classes, Eliza would sleep openly or not show up at all if she was tired, but she attended Harrid’s classes diligently.

That was because even Eliza was afraid of Harrid.

"Eliza. Wake up."

Carr spoke to Eliza cautiously.

However, Eliza showed no sign of waking.

"I’ll give you three seconds."

Flinching at Harrid’s words, Carr placed his hands on Eliza’s shoulders and shook her.

"Eliza! Wake up!"

Startled, Eliza opened her eyes.

Then her eyes met Harrid’s, and her face turned pale.

Harrid smiled coldly at Eliza.

"Just what on earth do you do at night that makes you doze off during class?"

"Th-that is..."

"There won’t be a next time."

"Y-yes!"

As Eliza sprang up and answered, Harrid stood in the center of the podium.

Sitting back down, Eliza covered her face with her hands.

'I haven’t been able to sleep properly at dawn for days, so I can’t keep my head straight.'

Five days had passed since her training with Leo Plov began.

Since then, Eliza had not been able to get a single wink of decent sleep.

All through the dawn, she endured the power of the Essence of Lightning.

After training, she refined her Spirit Power through meditation.

Following that, she trained her body.

And she could never miss classes.

Sleeping openly was something she could get away with once or twice, but she could not skip classes forever.

No matter how exhausted her body was from training, her personality would never allow her grades to drop because of it.

If it had simply been a matter of juggling study and training without sleep, Eliza would not have been driven this deeply into fatigue.

However, accepting the Essence of Lightning consumed an immense amount of Spirit Power and physical strength.

She was literally being pushed to her mental and physical limits.

In that situation, Leo did not offer a single word of advice, but Eliza did not mind.

It was what she wanted, and she intended to do as she pleased.

As Eliza massaged her eyes, trying somehow to chase away the fatigue, Carr handed her a Fatigue Recovery Potion.

"Drink it. It’s a special brew. It should wake you up a bit."

"Thank you. I’ll pay you for it later."

"It’s fine, it’s on the house."

Carr grinned.

"You’re a regular customer of mine. And a friend, too. I should help when things are tough."

"Friend?"

Eliza narrowed her eyes.

"Do you think of me as a friend?"

"Same school, same grade, same dormitory. That makes us friends. And you’re a high-value future customer!"

When Carr gave a thumbs-up, Eliza snorted.

"Carr Thomas, you must want to die, considering you’re chatting."

"N-no, sir!"

At Harrid’s reprimand, Carr’s face turned white.

Eliza glanced at Carr and toyed with the potion bottle in her hand before letting out another "Hmph!"

Meanwhile, only silence filled the large lecture hall.

All the students were focused on Harrid.

Today’s special Hero Studies class had been announced abruptly.

All major, minor, and elective classes were canceled, and the entire second-year class gathered in the large lecture hall.

Because it was such a sudden situation, their curiosity was high.

Under everyone’s gaze, Harrid spoke.

"The events happening in the world recently..."

Bang—!

"You should all be aware of the situation! Everyone is keeping quiet about it, but a grave situation has occurred!"

The door to the large lecture hall swung open violently, and Sedgen interrupted Harrid.

Looking at Sedgen, Harrid said,

"This is my class, Professor Sedgen."

"The second years are my responsibility! It’s only right that I conduct the class! You go and teach the first years!"

"I believe I was placed in charge of this class regardless of grade level."

"I have filed a formal protest regarding that!"

"Come back when the results are out from the faculty meeting. Celia Zerdinger, Duran Moira."

Harrid called out the names of the two Knights Department students sitting in the front row, as expected of top students.

"Drag him out."

"Professor Sedgen. You shouldn’t be doing this."

"We will escort you outside."

Celia and Duran bowed politely to Sedgen, then grabbed him and dragged him out.

"What are you doing! Were you not my lovely disciples? Are you going to act as Harrid’s henchmen now?! Eeek! Let go! Let goooo! How could you do this to me!"

The second years were not flustered by the now-familiar sight.

Once Sedgen was gone and the classroom became quiet, Harrid continued the class.

"What is the most serious issue in the current situation?"

At Harrid’s question, students raised their hands.

"Carr Thomas."

"Professor Sedgen barging in again."

"Come out and assume the disciplinary position."

"I’m sorry."

"Come out."

With a tearful face, Carr received his punishment beside Harrid.

"Carr is certainly interesting."

As Eiran spoke to Chelsea with a smile, Chelsea’s eyes widened.

"Carr? Who’s that? I don’t know anyone like that."

Chelsea openly treated Carr like a stranger.

Meanwhile, Harrid called on the student who had raised her hand the fastest after Carr.

"Nella Carven."

"It is the fact that heroes of the past are being resurrected as undead."

"Yes. Do you also know why this is a serious matter?"

"Because it is an event that could shake the very foundation of the Age of Heroes that has lasted for the past 5,000 years."

Harrid nodded as he looked at Nella, who answered in a heavy voice.

"Correct."

Harrid narrowed his eyes.

"5,000 years ago, after the Great Heroes subjugated Erebos and ended the Era of Calamity, the world finally gained peace. In the process, the gods who left the earth gifted the Hero Record to the world. Since then, those whose feats were recognized by the gods became heroes and maintained the peace and order of the world."

At those words, all the students nodded.

It was information that everyone knew.

"A hero is a noble being recognized by the gods. Is there anyone who denies this?"

At Harrid’s question, the entire second-year class shook their heads.

That was an absolute fact.

"Then why are the heroes of the past being resurrected as corpses by the power of the Death King and pointing their blades at us?"

"..."

Everyone fell silent at those words.

One recognized as noble by the gods had fallen and become a weapon of the Death King who sought to destroy the world.

If so, was that person truly noble?

The foundation of the Age of Heroes was the Hero.

A Hero was an agent of the gods, chosen by the gods.

After the Return of the Calamity was prevented, that belief had become even more widespread.

Those who led the world.

But what if those people were actually not qualified to be agents of the gods?

At a glance, the current era might look brilliant.

The appearance of Brave Arron and Luna, the Founder of the Nebula.

The subjugation of the Fragment of Erebos and the victory over the Death King.

The world’s attention was focused on the new miracles of the Hero Record.

However, behind that, it was also true that the doubt, 'Is a Hero truly an agent of the gods?' was beginning to sprout.

The sprout of doubt created a crack in faith.

And that crack brought about collapse.

"The reason for this special Hero Studies class is related to those matters."

At Harrid’s words, the students wore serious expressions.

Then Abad raised his hand.

"Ask your question, Abad Lewellin."

"Professor Harrid, what do you think about the current situation?"

"You all should know. Just because someone is a Hero does not mean they are an absolutely good and just person."

Harrid clicked his tongue.

"However, most people have believed that even if that is the case, a Hero possesses a conviction noble enough to be recognized by the gods."

"That is why they were chosen by the gods."

"Yes. But as someone who has worked as a professor at Lumene for a long time, I have had my doubts."

Harrid spoke as he scanned the students.

"Whether the gods’ choices are truly right."

"Pardon?"

"Students who did not seem like they could ever become Heroes became Heroes. And students who should never have become Heroes also rose to the position of Hero."

"..."

It was an incredibly dangerous statement for a Lumene professor.

Even if this was said to be an era without gods, the gods clearly existed.

Furthermore, although it was said that there were no followers of the gods, it was an era where beings called Heroes represented the will of the gods.

Blasphemy.

That was an act of insulting the Hero, the leader of the world.

Even if it came from a professor at the Hero Academy.

Even for Harrid, who had raised countless disciples, it was a statement that could put his professorship at risk if it leaked outside.

It was while the students were gulping down dry saliva.

"There are also fools who babble that if someone became an undead, that too is the will of the gods."

Harrid spoke coldly.

"However, there has been a recent change in the Hero Record."

"What kind of change?"

"It has recently been revealed that there are those who were stripped of their Hero status because their records were erased from the Hero Record."

"...!"

"...!"

Everyone wore expressions of shock.

The erasure of a record from the Hero Record.

It was a major incident unheard of until now.

"Is there any student who would like to explain what this means?"

At those words, the students glanced at one another.

It was too shocking an event.

Then someone raised their hand.

"Leo Plov."

At Harrid’s call, the gazes of all the students shifted to Leo.

"The rights they were able to enjoy because they were Heroes. The sins that were not questioned because they were Heroes. They will have to bear the responsibilities they avoided because they were Heroes."

Leo spoke as if making a declaration.

"Since the gods’ choices have been overturned, the number of people who do not trust their choices will increase. The existing system may collapse, and a new order may emerge. And."

"And?"

"Only real Heroes will remain."

At Leo’s answer, the corners of Harrid’s mouth curled up.

"You seem confident, Leo Plov."

"I didn’t have much interest in the gods’ choices to begin with."

===

Scratch, scratch—

A dark basement.

A beautiful being in pure white, luxurious clothes, hard to tell whether they were a boy or a girl, was busily writing something in a large book.

They filled the large empty spaces one by one.

Soon, the child, who had finished recording, took a step back.

Swoosh—!

Then the letters written in the book vanished as if evaporating.

The child scratched their gray hair.

"I don’t understand. Why does the record keep getting erased?"

They wore an expression as if they truly had no idea.

Then, soon after, their face contorted.

"Shut up already, my ears are stinging! What? Why do I only listen to Pibua’s requests? I recorded her as if she were the successor of the Founder of the Nebula? Lunia El Lunda?! I didn’t record her! It was written automatically by the Record System! You guys know too! The Record System is running wild because of that damn monstrosity!"

The child screamed into the empty air.

"What? Leo Plov? Who is that again? I don’t know a Hero with that name!"

The child irritably closed the book and walked away, tap, tap.

The space the child was in was strange.

It was like a giant library.

"Seriously! If they’re that frustrated, they should become librarians of the Record System themselves!"

The child’s steps, which had been heading out of the library, stopped.

The very first bookshelf of the Record System.

Several books had appeared on the bookshelf that had clearly burned and disappeared.

"Eh?"

The child wore an expression of shock.

"How is Kyle’s story still continuing?"
