Chapter 158: 158. Sea god.
Lin Xuan eventually put the matter aside.
There was little point dwelling on a trial whose contents had yet to be revealed.
For now, he decided to go see the situation at the shipyard with his own eyes.
He left his private courtyard and soon made his way toward the coast.
By the time he arrived, the usually busy atmosphere around the construction site was noticeably different.
Voices could be heard everywhere.
Workers and nearby residents had gathered in small groups, quietly discussing something that had happened earlier that morning.
"A leviathan, I tell you. It was enormous!"
"I only saw its silhouette, but even that was enough to scare me."
"You call that a beast? It looked more like a mountain moving beneath the sea."
"It was so large that it nearly dwarfed the sun!"
"Don’t exaggerate."
"I’m not! That’s what the people near the beach were saying."
Lin Xuan slowed his steps.
Usually, construction would have already begun by this hour.
The workers were particularly enthusiastic about getting started because of the bonus he had promised them.
Every additional day they worked meant they were one step closer to receiving their reward.
Yet today, there was almost no movement around the construction site.
It was almost as though everyone had already come to the same conclusion that the shipyard would be halted today.
Lin Xuan frowned slightly.
What happened?
He did not need to ask for long.
The conversations around him quickly provided the answer.
"A beast that enormous appeared in the sea this morning."
"Even the cultivators couldn’t identify it."
"Would you still dare to build a shipyard after seeing something like that?"
Lin Xuan remained silent.
So that was it.
A sighting of an enormous sea beast had been enough to convince everyone that continuing construction was courting disaster.
He looked toward the vast ocean.
From where he stood, the sea appeared completely calm.
There was no sign that anything had happened yet Lin Xuan knew better.
If the rumors were anything to go by, the people had witnessed only a tiny glimpse of its true size.
Lin Xuan sighed inwardly.
This is going to be troublesome.
Lin Xuan walked deeper into the construction area.
The moment the workers noticed him, the surrounding conversations gradually became quieter.
Several of them exchanged glances before one of the older workers finally stepped forward.
"Patriarch Lin."
Lin Xuan nodded.
"Why has construction stopped?"
The worker hesitated.
"Patriarch, about that..."
He glanced toward the sea.
"We all saw what happened this morning. Even though it was far away, the size of that thing..."
He swallowed.
"If a beast like that really lives in those waters, continuing to build the shipyard feels useless."
Another worker quickly nodded.
"Exactly. We aren’t afraid of working hard, Patriarch. You promised us a bonus, and everyone was looking forward to earning it."
A few people gave awkward smiles.
"But none of us expected something like this and we thought you’d also share the same intention."
Lin Xuan looked at them, he could understand their hesitation.
These people were ordinary workers.
Even cultivators would have been frightened after witnessing a creature large enough to make the sea itself tremble.
There was no reason to expect ordinary people to willingly continue working beside waters inhabited by something so terrifying.
"Did anyone actually see the creature clearly?"
The workers shook their heads.
"No, inly its silhouette and it disappeared too quickly."
"Nobody knows what it was."
Lin Xuan nodded thoughtfully and then he looked toward the workers.
"Don’t worry."
His calm voice immediately attracted everyone’s attention.
"For now, construction will continue as usual."
A murmur spread through the crowd.
Lin Xuan looked toward the unfinished harbor and added.
"I’ll personally investigate what happened and make sure you all remain safe."
"Understood, Patriarch!"
The workers answered almost immediately.
Lin Xuan nodded.
An hour later, he made a quick inspection of the surrounding area before the sound of construction once again spread across the unfinished shipyard.
Lin Xuan remained nearby for a while, watching them work.
However, not long after construction resumed, a commotion suddenly came from the entrance.
A group of people hurried toward the shipyard.
Their clothes were disheveled, and their expressions were filled with excitement rather than fear.
"The sea has come to avenge us!"
One of them shouted the moment he arrived.
Everyone at the construction site turned toward them.
The man’s eyes were practically glowing with fanaticism.
"You killed our leader, and now our god has answered our prayers!"
Another person immediately shouted,
"Cease the construction!"
"Stop defiling the sea!"
"Our god has already shown its might!"
Several more voices followed.
"Take our god as the one true savior!"
"The sea has judged the Lin Family!"
"Stop this foolish construction and worship the true ruler of the sea!"
The workers gradually stopped what they were doing.
Confusion appeared on their faces.
Lin Xuan’s brows gradually furrowed as he stared at the group.
They were the same troublemakers who had once come demanding the Body Tempering Pill recipe.
Lin Xuan’s eyes narrowed.
He remembered that incident clearly.
He had checked the soul of one of them and learned the circumstances behind their actions but he still spared the man’s life.
So why were they standing here, shouting that he had killed him?
Did the person who brainwash them deliberately make them believe that I killed their leader?
Lin Xuan’s expression became colder.
There was little point wasting time trying to figure it out from their ramblings.
He raised one hand and a terrifying pressure instantly descended upon the group.
"Ugh!"
"What’s happening?!"
The fanatical expressions on their faces vanished almost instantly.
Before any of them could resist, their bodies went limp and collapsed to the ground.
The surrounding workers fell silent.
Lin Xuan did not even spare the unconscious group another glance.
He simply turned his head toward the road and saw a group of city guards passing by.
"Take them to the Lin Family."
The guards immediately stopped.
They looked toward the unconscious people lying on the ground before turning their attention toward Lin Xuan.
"Yes, Patriarch Lin."
The guards quickly approached and began carrying the unconscious men away.
Nobody questioned his authority.
After all, the person standing before them was the Patriarch of the Lin Family.
Lin Xuan watched as the guards disappeared with the group before turning his gaze back toward the sea.
