The Lord Demon King is Unfathomable!

Chapter 1743 - 488: Choices Among People (4)

He clearly heard the Chiliarch's last words were not "return home," but a loud "expedition!". Before he could voice his full of confusion, he was swept into the snowstorm with the mighty crowd and the endless flurry of snow...

...

Sarve finally left the camp he had cursed for nearly three months, along with other bewildered peasants carrying flintlock guns.

With the precedent of being hanged, no one dared to escape. Moreover, mounted soldiers eyed them menacingly, and no one dared bet on being the fastest runner.

In short...

Just follow for now.

However, the direction of the march made everyone feel confused again. They were clearly trained to prevent northern bandit troubles, yet the officers' boots pointed south.

The troop was led to the bank of the Rushing River.

Here lay a small dock, filled with big and small flat-bottomed barges primarily used for transporting grain, and occasionally passengers.

This year, however, was different from previous years.

The grain merchants had been driven away, especially the caravans of the Andes Family, not a single one could be seen, leaving the dock deserted as if occupied by the undead.

The river water surged with gray waves in the cold wind, reflecting the peasants' confusion, uncertain about their next step.

Thankfully, the cavalryman accompanying the Chiliarch approached, shouting loudly to urge them onboard.

"Board the ship! Quickly!"

Burdened with confusion, the people herded into the cramped cabins. The cabins reeked of fermented husks, reminiscent of a livestock pen.

"Hurry! Squeeze in further—"

"This one can fit three more."

"Get in quickly!"

Amidst the urging, twenty fully armed soldiers were crammed into the narrow cabin, packed like sardines, with the butt of their rifles against the floor and their knees pressing against others' backsides.

The barge ropes were untied, and the boat soon moved, wobbling its bulky body in the icy river water, drifting downstream.

The rocking made many young men turn pale; although the Campbell Duchy bordered the sea, not everyone had been on a boat.

The suffocating atmosphere was stifling, made worse by the abrupt sound of vomiting and the ensuing foul smell in the air.

Squeezed in the corner of the cabin, Sarve prayed for the protection of Saint Sis as he watched the receding bank through narrow gaps.

At that moment, heavy footsteps echoed from the bow, and a stern-looking Knight Follower stepped onto the deck.

He wore fine chain armor, his hand resting on the sword hilt, his gaze hawk-like as it swept over the peasants packed into the cabin.

Though not a Silver Level Powerhouse, his gaze was more intimidating than any Silver Level Extraordinary Power.

At least Sarve dared meet the eyes of a Transcendent on a battlefield with guns roaring, but he wouldn't dare look directly at this man, nor imagine how many Hundred-man Teams it would take to take him down.

Perhaps—

Even several would be useless.

The Transcendent could at worst slay him with one sword, but this guy needed only a glance to drown everyone around him in the icy river.

The turmoil on the boat instantly quieted.

The Follower stood at the bow, letting the howling river wind flap his robe embroidered with the Granston family crest.

The people in the cabin had long known who mobilized them, but it was indeed the first time the Granston family crest appeared before them.

It seemed the Earl was finally prepared.

Then the Knight Follower spoke.

"Campbell's soldiers! Subjects of the late King! Faithful and kind servants of Saint Sis, the Granston family summons you!"

Everyone awaited his next words, some already having a vague sense of bad omens in their hearts, feeling something terrible was about to happen.

And sure enough.

The Follower's next words unveiled the Earl's conspiracy, pushing everyone present to the brink of disaster!

"Our Duke Edward Campbell has betrayed the trust of the Ancestor, betrayed our late King Aaron Campbell, and betrayed his loyal subjects!"

"This shameless jackal altered the will, usurped the Duke title not his own. His lack of recognition by the 'Light of Praise' is the most direct evidence!"

"The true will has always been kept safe in the Granston family castle, the rightful heir is our King Jelock, whose legitimacy has been acknowledged and confirmed by the Kingdom's King!"

"Baron Lukeville and all the Northern Lords will respond to the call of Earl Derek Granston! We will install King Jelock as the new ruler of the Duchy!"

The cabin was filled with dead silence, followed by uproar, the sounds of anger and terror nearly capsizing the small boat.

"You, what do you want to do?!"

"Are you crazy!"

"I'm not getting embroiled with you, let me off!"

In one Duchy, there emerged two Kings!

Sarve felt a chill rising from his feet straight to his head; he couldn't understand "Light of Praise," but he grasped the latter half of the sentence.

This guy—

Intends to rebel!

Cold sweat drenched his back; he was never so terrified because not only could Earl Granston hang his whole family, but so could the Grand Duke...

"Quiet!"

The Follower drew his longsword with a clank.
