The Lord Demon King is Unfathomable!

Chapter 1816 - 503: Holy Mark Beneath the Twilight (Part 4)

The Hook Scythe Soldier of the Lion Heart Knight Order glanced over, and there was a hint of displeasure in his eyes at the Campbell people's "swaggering."

However, they said nothing.

"Theresa" glanced at them indifferently, then shifted her gaze and headed towards the market outside the city.

Of course, she wasn't the real Theresa, but Erin dressed in an Alchemy Mask.

She used a Magic Potion to dye her silver hair into the most inconspicuous brown, then sprayed on perfume to mask the scent of the Blood Race, and wore the leather armor that Theresa usually wore.

Although her size was not small, the well-trained Theresa had left her ample room.

This experience of hiding her identity was exceedingly novel for Erin, who, although she used to stroll the streets of Thunder City, was almost always recognized as Erin.

The people's attention sometimes troubled her; they unconsciously presented their most respectable side, while she actually wanted to see what their lives were really like.

Here, she had no such worries.

Walking along the path at the city gate, Erin observed the wooden buildings lining the street.

Compared to the bustling Thunder City, this place was like a densely packed large countryside, with several families crowded into a narrow wooden building, and wastewater flowing beneath the eaves.

Twilight City had a rudimentary sewer system, imitating the one "Linte Isaac" built in Thunder City during the Isaac Dynasty, but it only covered several streets near the Governor's Mansion.

If Erin had to use a few words to describe the uncovered areas, she could only think of poverty, oppression, and desolation.

If she had to sum up these three words, the only word she could think of was "feudal."

The Judicial Court also had a post in the settlement outside the city, patrolling in shiny armor alongside Judges clad in black robes.

Awed by their reputation, the market vendors dared not call out loudly, and customers hurried about, which made them look even more suspicious, drawing frequent attention from the Judges.

Cautiously threading through the sewage-filled streets, Erin entered the crowded yet desolate marketplace.

She noticed that people here primarily used copper coins for transactions, and the prices were astonishingly low.

At first, she was somewhat surprised because the prices in Twilight City, just across the gate, were completely different, but she soon understood the reason.

Most buyers and sellers were local farmers with very little money, and there were no foreign merchants at all.

After all, doing business with the risk of being inspected by the Judicial Court was really not wise, and selling goods to farmers who had no money was hardly profitable.

Why not sell to the citizens?

That was of course because they lacked the Tokens of the Campbell family, the Devalu family, or the Church Court.

Erin noticed that not far away, two farmers were haggling, and in the end, one exchanged a small bag of potatoes for a few nails used for furniture repair.

Due to restrictions in circulation, this place temporarily reverted to the primitive barter system of the early First Epoch, so long ago that even the bookshelves storing those epics were dust-laden.

Like the markets in the city, the market at the city gate had hardly anything to buy.

Erin felt a bit disheartened.

She had thought things would improve after spring arrived, but the spring in Twilight Province seemed to be later than usual.

However, she was still somewhat fortunate, as, after searching for a while, she unexpectedly found a fruit stand.

Remembering that Sarah seemed to enjoy fruits, her eyes lit up, and she went over to the stand to make her selections.

The vendor was a middle-aged man with a relatively sturdy back, but his face visibly reflected dietary deficiencies. Seeing Erin in her well-crafted leather armor, he immediately became respectful and dared not breathe too loudly.

"What do you need, ma'am?"

"Just looking around."

"Alright..."

"..."

Erin leaned closer to the stand, carefully making her selections.

Though these were overwintered apples, their skins wrinkled from cellar storage, far from fresh, finding apples in this desolate market was a pleasant surprise.

Seeing some dried fruits for sale, she tried to find some of her favorite nuts but unfortunately found none.

Merchants from the east and south coasts of the Vortex Sea couldn't reach this place; only those friends with exotic accents and skin the color of wheat would bring such items.

"Sir Knight," he cautiously spoke while packing, "are you from the Campbell Duchy?"

"You could say that." Erin answered ambiguously, imitating Theresa's tone, trying to make her voice sound indifferent, "How is business lately? Many customers?"

The vendor instinctively glanced over; just in time, he saw two soldiers from the Kingdom walking past.

He sighed and lowered his voice.

"Ma'am, you're joking. Besides you, where else would there be any customers? Thanks to those lords, it's only distinguished knights like yourself who would care to look at my small business."

These apples were mostly discarded by the Lord after winter. Usually, they were distributed as benefits by the Steward to the Lord's servants, but some Stewards or servants would withhold a portion, letting village acquaintances take them to nearby towns to trade for some money to split among themselves.

He dared to complain only because this knight from the Campbell Duchy wasn't in cahoots with their Majesty.
