Chapter 1: Chapter 1

"The Alpha’s fated mate has returned."

The elder’s words shattered through the grand hall like a death sentence.

"And according to the laws of the werewolf clans... Sophia Gray shall reclaim her rightful place as Luna of the Silver Creek Pack."

For a moment, I forgot how to breathe.

Just yesterday, I had stood on a battlefield drowning in blood to save this pack.

I had burned through my healing gift until white streaks appeared in my hair.

I had nearly died for Silver Creek.

And now, they were replacing me.

~

The battle had lasted four days.

Four days of pouring my healing blood into dying warriors.

Four days of forcing myself to remain awake while stitching flesh back together, resetting shattered bones, and dragging men back from the edge of death.

I had long since lost count of how many lives I saved.

The last thing I remembered was collapsing beside a young warrior whose heart had stopped beating beneath my hands.

Had I managed to save him?

"...Luna?"

A familiar voice pulled me from my thoughts. The healer hurried toward me, relief washing across her exhausted face.

"Luna, you’re awake."

I tried to sit up, but agony tore through my shoulders so violently that I nearly collapsed back onto the bed.

"My daughter..." My throat felt raw, each word scraping painfully against it. "How’s my child? Is she safe?" I whispered.

"Thanks to you, Luna, not just Lily. The rest of us are safe too."

As long as Lily was safe, nothing else mattered.

The healer hesitated suddenly. "Luna..."

Something in her tone made my heart stutter. I opened my eyes fully.

"What is it?"

"The council has summoned you. Everyone has gathered in the grand hall."

The war had ended yesterday. Victory belonged to Silver Creek.

Perhaps the council intended to honor the fallen warriors.

Or maybe they wished to discuss rebuilding the eastern border destroyed during the battle.

Either way, as Luna of the Silver Creek Pack, I had no reason to delay.

"I’ll go."

The healer immediately stepped forward.

"Luna, your body hasn’t recovered yet. You exhausted your bloodline gift. If you continue forcing yourself like this, your wolf may fall into a deep slumber."

I smiled faintly despite the pain.

"There are widows waiting to hear whether their husbands survived. If I can stand, I can walk."

Her lips parted like she wanted to argue further, but eventually she nodded.

"...Allow me to prepare you."

A maid soon arrived carrying a fresh silver gown embroidered with the crescent moon, the symbol of the Luna.

As I changed, my gaze drifted toward the mirror.

For a moment, I barely recognized myself.

My complexion was pale as death, dark shadows bruised the skin beneath my eyes, and streaks of white now threaded through my dark hair. Too many streaks.

I stared at them silently. In only four days, I had aged years.

I no longer looked like the Luna of the strongest pack in the North.

I looked like a woman who had left half her life on the battlefield.

The walk to the grand hall felt strangely long.

Servants lined the corridors while warriors stepped aside as I passed.

Yet not one person congratulated me on our victory.

The grand hall was silent when I arrived.

Only rows of elders standing in complete silence while the council occupied the highest platform.

And at the very center—Kael stood there.

My husband.

Relief instinctively flooded me despite everything.

He’s safe. For four days, I had feared receiving news of his death.

"My Alpha?" I called softly as I stepped forward.

I expected him to ask about my injuries, to at least look relieved that I survived.

Instead, Kael stepped aside. And my smile faded instantly.

Because standing behind him... was a woman I never expected to see again.

She wore a simple white dress, her blonde hair spilling over her shoulders in soft waves. She looked delicate, fragile even. Almost gentle enough to fool anyone seeing her for the first time.

But I knew her face

"...Sophia?" The name escaped before I could stop it.

Five years ago, Sophia Gray disappeared without a trace.

The woman Kael once loved enough to renounce the Moon Goddess herself for.

The woman everyone eventually believed had abandoned Kael and Silver Creek.

Yet now she stood beside him, alive.

My eyes immediately turned toward Kael and my stomach twisted when I realized he was already looking at her.

An elder slowly rose from his seat.

"Luna Evelyn Valemont. The council first wishes to acknowledge your service during the Eastern battle. You exhausted your bloodline gift preserving the lives of our warriors."

"You remained on the battlefield for four days without rest. Your contribution to Silver Creek is immeasurable."

I lowered my head politely. "It was my duty."

"It was," the elder agreed calmly. "And that is precisely why we believe you will understand the decision reached today."

My fingers curled slightly at my sides.

"What decision?"

The elder exchanged glances with the others before speaking again.

"Five years ago, Alpha Kael lost his fated mate."

"The Moon Goddess," he continued, turning toward Sophia, "has now returned her to us."

"As dictated by the ancient laws of the werewolf clans...The Alpha’s fated mate shall become Luna of the Silver Creek Pack."

"I’m afraid..." My eyes moved around the silent hall. "I don’t understand."

"There is nothing to misunderstand, Luna Evelyn."

"The Moon Goddess has reunited Alpha Kael with his fated mate. According to ancestral law, Sophia Gray is the rightful Luna of Silver Creek."

I slowly turned toward Kael. "...Is this true?"

For the first time since I entered the hall, he finally looked directly at me.

"It is."

The words struck harder than any blade.

I swallowed painfully. "What about me?"

I looked between the council members, then finally toward Sophia, who stood quietly beside Kael with lowered eyes like an innocent victim dragged into someone else’s cruelty.

"I fought beside your warriors for four days." My voice trembled despite my efforts to steady it. "My blood kept hundreds alive. Look at me, Kael."

"I have aged years in four days. I nearly died."

"I walked into this hall believing the council wished to honor those sacrifices. Instead... you intend to strip me of everything."

An elder sighed heavily.

"You misunderstand, Luna Evelyn. You have served Silver Creek well. History will remember you as one of its greatest Lunas. But history cannot stand above the will of the Moon Goddess."

Another elder spoke next.

"We have discussed your future thoroughly."

Something about those words made me feel sick.

They discussed my future? Without me?

"You will not be cast aside," he continued calmly.

"As acknowledgment for your years of service, Alpha Kael has graciously agreed to keep you by his side as his chosen mate."

For a moment, I genuinely thought I had misheard him.

"...Chosen mate?"

A laugh escaped me before I could stop it.

"You wish to demote me from Luna..." My vision blurred slightly. "...to the second woman in my own marriage?"

No one answered.

"I, Evelyn Valemont, daughter of Alpha Rowan Valemont..." My voice sharpened. "...am expected to stand behind another woman in my husband’s home?"

My eyes locked onto Kael’s.

"Is this what you want?"

His expression never changed.

"Sophia is my fated mate." His voice was cold. "And you always knew this day might come. You should have prepared yourself."

Prepared?

I prepared medicines when rejection sickness nearly destroyed him after Sophia vanished.

I prepared treaties, alliances, and trade agreements that strengthened Silver Creek.

I prepared battle strategies while he fought wars.

But apparently, I was also supposed to prepare myself to be discarded.

"My Alpha..." I started softly before shaking my head.

"My husband," I corrected quietly.

"I gave you my blood to save your life after she left you. I exhausted my bloodline to protect your warriors. I built this pack beside you. I negotiated alliances. I gave Silver Creek everything I possessed."

I swallowed hard. "And this is how you repay me?"

Kael frowned slightly.

"You speak as though you accomplished something extraordinary."

"What?"

"Everything you listed was expected of the Luna." His voice remained emotionless. "You fulfilled your responsibilities."

His gaze swept over me coldly.

"Do you expect praise for doing what every Luna is meant to do?"

I thought the battlefield had already drained everything from me.

Apparently, I was wrong.

I looked at the men whose lives I had saved only yesterday. Warriors who would have died on that battlefield if not for my blood.

None of them could even meet my eyes.

Suddenly, Sophia rushed forward. "Please stop!" She dropped to her knees before me sobbing fully.

The sight was so abrupt that several people gasped. "This is all my fault," she sobbed. "I never wanted to ruin your life, Evelyn."

Five years ago, that innocent face might have fooled me too.

Sophia clutched the edge of my gown desperately.

"I know you hate me," she cried softly. "And you have every right to. Back then... after what you told me, I was terrified."

My brows furrowed together. What was she talking about?

"I-I know I shouldn’t have run away," Sophia continued tearfully. "But after you warned me to leave before something terrible happened to me... I panicked."

I went completely still..

Sophia lowered her head, shoulders trembling.

"I never meant to come back and steal anything from you," she whispered. "If my presence hurts you this much... then I’ll leave again."

Several elders immediately looked toward me in shock.

"She threatened the fated mate?"

"Is that why Sophia disappeared?"

"I knew something felt strange..."

Kael suddenly grabbed my shoulder harshly enough to make pain shoot through my weakened body.

"You threatened her?" His growled.

For a moment, I genuinely thought I had misheard him.

Threatened her?

Five years ago, Kael had been dying.

After rejecting his fated mate under Alpha Gideon’s orders, he had nearly ran mad, almost destroyed his wolf completely. He could barely control his shifts. Some nights he tore through entire rooms like a beast driven mad.

And I had gone to Sophia myself. Mud soaking the hem of my dress as I stood outside the carriage she planned to leave in.

"Please," I had said back then. "Kael is sick. If you leave now, he may not survive it."

But Sophia had only looked at me coldly through the carriage window.

Then she left with Alpha Damon—Kael’s greatest rival.

Yet now, she’s twisted it all, now, the elders looked at me suspiciously, the warriors suddenly looked at me like they no longer recognized me.

I laughed bitterly. "What does it matter? She’s got you wrapped around her skirt already and will abandon you again, Just like she did five years ago."

Kael’s eyes darkened dangerously. "Enough."

His Alpha aura exploded through the room.

Several servants immediately dropped to their knees.

Normally, his aura would never affect me this much. But my wolf was exhausted.

The pressure slammed into my body painfully, forcing me back a step.

Still, I refused to kneel.

Kael noticed, his eyes narrowed slightly.

"You are crossing your limits, Evelyn."

Limits?

I almost smiled.

After everything I had done for this pack, now I was being warned about limits.

"Please don’t fight because of me," Sophia whispered tearfully. "I can leave again. I never wanted to separate husband and wife."

A strange calm settled over me. Perhaps disappointment eventually became numbness.

"It’s alright," I said quietly, I looked at the council.

"You don’t need to continue this discussion."

Kael frowned slightly. "What do you mean?"

I met his eyes "I understand now. No matter what I say... no matter what I sacrificed... your minds were already made up before I entered this room."

I looked around slowly. "At least now I know exactly what my worth is to Silver Creek."

I straightened despite the exhaustion threatening to tear my body apart.

"So let me make myself clear. I will never remain here as another woman’s shadow."

"I want a divorce."
