Chapter 12: Chapter 12

The morning sun filtered through the windows of the Valemont dining hall, warming the polished oak table where breakfast had long since been cleared away.

I wrapped both hands around my teacup, welcoming its warmth.

For the first time in what felt like years... there was calm.

"You seem lighter," Celine’s voice had me looking up. I gave a small smile, humming.

"I feel lighter."

Across the table, Varek set down the report he had been reading.

"So." His eyes lifted to meet mine. "What are you planning to do about him?" He glanced at Tristan, who was behind me.

He stepped back even further, taking no offence at what Varek had said.

I sighed deeply, remembering the events of last night. "He apologised."

"He did," Varek agreed.

"He resigned," Celine added.

"He also knew everything for five years," Varek said evenly. "He also buried your son."

The warmth from the teacup suddenly disappeared from my hands.

After a long silence... I spoke. "I know."

Varek leaned back in his chair. "I’m not telling you to forgive him, and I’m not telling you not to. I’m simply asking..."

"Can you trust him?"

Before I could answer, a loud bang sounded at the doorway. Every servant in the room jumped just as a guard stumbled inside.

"Alpha Varek! They’re here!"

Varek frowned. "Who is here? Speak clearly!"

The guard swallowed. "Alpha Kael and..."

His sentence ended abruptly as a powerful gust of Alpha aura slammed into him, sending him sprawling across the floor.

The moment I saw him, every trace of peace I’d found that morning disappeared.

I pushed back my chair, tea forgotten. "What are you doing here again, Kael?"

I took a step forward, only for Celine’s hand to lightly catch my arm.

"Wait." Her voice was barely above a whisper.

"Look."

My eyes shifted past Kael’s shoulder, and just then, I noticed the second man.

Kael hadn’t come here alone. He’d come with the same man who had come to Silver Creek the same day I was leaving. The same man I now remembered.

"Supreme Alpha Lucien. What brings you to the Valemont estate?" Varek spoke, his voice even, though I could hear the edge beneath it.

An alpha barging into another alpha’s pack was a challenge to the alpha’s authority, and in this case, there were two alphas.

Alpha Lucien stood tall and broad, his silver eyes roaming the house before finally settling on me, his eyes hardened.

"I’m here for Evelyn Valemont."

I didn’t know when I burst out laughing as if his words were a joke. My shoulders hunched over, my body shaking from how deeply I laughed.

Kael’s face darkened, his hands tightening into fists. "Do you think of us as a joke?" He snapped, but I paid him no mind.

"I expected better from you, Alpha Lucien. I thought you were a man of intelligence and power, but how mistaken I have been."

Lucien’s jaw hardened. I could tell he was offended, but frankly, I didn’t care. I was done putting up with Kael and his shenanigans.

I felt Celine judging me from behind. No one could speak to the Supreme Alpha this bluntly and go scot-free. His pack was the wealthiest and most powerful pack in the entire realm. He was the founder of the First Houses.

Lucien smirked, but his eyes were as hard as rock. "You’re quite a venomous woman, aren’t you?"

"I have a lot more venom where that came from," I replied with as much energy.

"If you’re done fooling yourselves, then leave. I have no need for you."

"Evelyn!" Kael growled, nearly raising his voice. He stepped forward, eyes red with anger. "How dare you speak to the Alpha this way? Have you no shame?"

"Shame?" I laughed again, the sound hollow.

"Have you no shame, Supreme Alpha? You march into another Alpha’s home, trample over his authority, and order me back to the very place where I was humiliated, abused, and discarded like I was nothing."

I took another step forward. "And you call yourself just?"

"I held you in high regard once." My lips curled bitterly. "I thought you were a man worthy of leading the First Houses."

"What a disappointment." I shook my head.

Lucien’s eyes darkened. "I have no use for your thoughts. They’re merely the thoughts of a mad woman."

"Alpha Lucien." Varek said, a growl forming in his chest.

"You will return to Silver Creek and repair all that you’ve damaged."

I stared at him like he had developed two heads. I didn’t flinch under his stare.

"It seems Alpha Kael isn’t the only fool in the realm."

Kael’s face twisted. "Watch your tongue!" He snarled, but I ignored him completely.

"I expected wisdom from the Supreme Alpha." I smiled without warmth.

"Instead, I find another arrogant man who believes every woman should kneel simply because he gives an order."

Lucien’s jaw tightened.

"I call it selfish." His tone didn’t change at all, which somehow made it worse. "Warriors are dying because you couldn’t separate your pride from your responsibilities."

"How interesting," I said, "that you’d lecture me on responsibility, Alpha Lucien. I thought Kael was the only fool in this room. You’re exceeding my expectations."

His jaw tightened slightly.

"I held you in high regard once," I continued. "From a distance. I imagined the Supreme Alpha, founder of the First Houses, might actually be a man of judgment." I shook my head slowly. "But here you are. Just as egotistical, just as selfish, as every other man who thinks the world owes him obedience the moment he demands it."

"Evelyn." Kael’s voice came out sharp.

I didn’t look at him. "And you." My eyes finally found his. "You ran straight to him the moment things went wrong, didn’t you? Couldn’t manage your own pack, couldn’t manage your own mate, so you went crawling to someone more powerful for help because you’re not man enough. Not Alpha enough to do it."

"Evelyn!" Kael’s face went dark with fury. He lunged forward before Tristan’s arm caught him hard across the chest, holding him back.

"Get your hand off me," Kael snarled. Only then did he see who held him back.

Kael let out a cold, mocking laugh. "So this is where you ran."

His eyes travelled over Tristan from head to toe with open contempt.

"I searched half the realm for my Beta."

"And all this time..." He shook his head. "You were hiding behind a woman’s skirts. You abandoned your Alpha, your pack, and your oath... only to become Evelyn’s lapdog?"

Tristan didn’t budge, his jaw locked hard. "I’ll stand wherever Lady Evelyn stands."

Lucien’s gaze never strayed away from me. This was the same woman he’d held in his mind for the past four years. He didn’t forget a face so easily, not especially hers.

She might have forgotten him, but he hadn’t forgotten her.

"Enough!" Lucien growled, and everyone went silent.

"I have not come here to witness whatever this is. I have only come to order Evelyn Valemont back to Silver Creek."

"No," I spat out.

Lucien’s expression hardened, his right eye twitching. No one had ever flatly refused his order. "That wasn’t a request."

I stared at him, refusing to lower my gaze.

"And I wasn’t asking for permission."

Something cold flashed in Lucien’s eyes. He knew Evelyn Valemont was a feisty, bitter woman, but nothing prepared him for what he was getting. This woman who looked small, fragile even, was staring him in the eye without flinching.

Lucien huffed lowly. He took a step forward. "You misunderstand your position, Evelyn Valemont. You do not have a choice here."

I smirked. "I’ll tell you now, Alpha Lucien. No one, and I mean no one, dead or alive can make me return to Silver Creek."

"You are the Supreme Alpha. You command the First Houses. You have armies that bow at your feet and wolves who tremble when you enter a room." I continued.

"But you are standing in front of a woman who has already lost everything she could lose."

"You think your title scares me?" I smiled bitterly. "Alpha Lucien, I have spent five years living beside a man who looked me in the eyes and lied about our own child."

"My son died," I continued, my voice shaking now, "and instead, I was made to raise his mistress’s child as mine while my son rotted in a grave dug shabbily. You all stood there and allowed me to continue living as if nothing had happened."

Lucien’s expression remained cold, but something flickered behind his eyes.

"You speak of responsibility." My voice grew louder. "You speak of warriors. You speak of duty."

I pointed at Kael. "But where was his duty when he hid my child’s death from me?"

Lucien’s jaw clenched. "He was already dead. What does it matter?"

The words hit like a slap.

For a moment, I couldn’t speak at all. The room around me seemed to tilt, sound falling away until all I could hear was my own pulse hammering in my ears.

My lips parted slightly, disbelief replacing the anger.

"How dare you?" I whispered.

"How dare you stand there and speak about my child like he was nothing?"

The next second, I was already moving.

I didn’t care that he was the Supreme Alpha.

I didn’t care that every warrior in this realm would have feared standing before him.

All I saw was a man who reduced my son to a memory that should have been forgotten.

I lunged at him with everything I had, striking him hard in the chest as much as I could.

"You know nothing about me!" I screamed at him. "You know nothing about my child! You know nothing about what I lost!"

"Evelyn!" Celine cried.

Lucien’s expression changed for the briefest moment. Something like guilt flickered across his eyes but was gone just as fast.

His Alpha aura exploded outward, and before anyone could reach us, he pushed me away.

I fell backwards, nearly hitting a wall.

"Lady Evelyn!"

Tristan moved faster than anyone.

He caught me before I hit the ground, his arms immediately wrapping around me.

"Are you alright?"

I couldn’t answer. My chest hurt too much.

My tears blurred my vision as I looked back at Lucien. "You see?" My voice trembled. "This is what men like you do."

"You walk into people’s lives, destroy everything, and then convince yourselves you’re right because you have power."

Lucien’s face remained unreadable, but his hands had tightened into fists.

"What do you know about losing a child?" I screamed. "What do you know about waking up every day believing you failed someone who never even got the chance to live?"

My voice broke completely. "You don’t know me. You don’t know my son. And you will never speak about him like he was nothing."

I wiped my tears with shaking hands and forced myself to stand.

Tristan tried to steady me, but I refused to lean on him.

I looked directly at Lucien. "You came here thinking you could command me. You came here thinking your title, your armies, and your power would make me kneel."

A cold smile appeared on my lips. "But you were wrong. No one, dead or alive. Supreme Alpha or Moon Goddess herself."

"No one will make me return to Silver Creek."

Kael’s face twisted inexplicably. Not once had he ever thought of Evelyn being this stubborn.

"Sophia is sick," he blurted out. "She needs your blood."

I looked at him, my eyes colder than death itself.

"If she’s dying, may she rest in peace."

I felt every eye turn to me, but I was done. I held my head up high.

For the first time, something like disbelief crossed Lucien’s face.

Then slowly, his expression turned cold again.

"Very well." He turned toward the door. "You’ve made your position clear. I won’t waste further breath on it."

He paused at the threshold, his back still to me.

"But understand this, Evelyn Valemont. You have made your choice, and I will make mine. I hope you enjoy those walls," he said quietly. "Because after today, I will make certain no merchant, no guild, no pack under my influence ever does business with you. You’ll build nothing beyond this estate. Not while I still hold my name."

I stared at him, refusing to let him see even a trace of fear.

"Is that a threat, Supreme Alpha?"

"No. It is a promise."
