Chapter 28: Chapter 28

The Bloodmoon pack was quiet. It was deep into the night, and still he was awake. Damon sat in his study, the Red Wolf Sword propped against his desk.

His Beta, Ren, stood by the window, arms crossed. He had been watching Damon since they returned from Valemont.

"You’re going to tell me what that was about," Ren said finally. "Or am I supposed to guess?"

Damon didn’t look up from the glass of wine in his hand. "What was what about?"

"The visit." Ren’s voice was flat. "The sword. The partnership offer. You just handed the most valuable weapon in the realm to a woman you barely know."

"I know her well enough."

"You know her name. You know her ex-husband. That’s not the same thing."

Damon turned to look at him, his brows raised in a coy manner. "Tell me, Ren. You’ve been my Beta for how long?"

Beta Ren’s brows furrowed. "Four years, Alpha."

Damon hummed. "In those four years, what have you learned about me so far?"

The Beta paused, slightly taken aback. "Alpha—what are you—" He paused, seeing the pointed look Damon wore. "You don’t do anything without reason."

Damon’s lips curved. "Exactly."

Ren sighed. "Then tell me the reason."

Damon leaned back in his chair, studying the flames burning in the fireplace. "Ren, did you know that the enemy of your enemy is your friend?" He looked at the Beta. "And Evelyn Valemont has made herself not just Kael’s enemy but also the Supreme Alpha’s."

Damon picked up the glass again, swirling the wine slowly. "Evelyn is intelligent. More intelligent than I gave her credit for."

"Intelligent enough to fool an entire pack for five years," Ren said. "Intelligent enough to fool you, apparently, until three days ago."

Damon’s smirk didn’t falter, though something flickered behind his eyes. "I’ll give you that one."

"Think about it, Ren. Not only did she build an empire from a dying pack and let a fool wear the credit for it. She hid thirty-eight percent of Silver Creek’s wealth under a man’s name for four years, and no one—not Kael—even thought to look twice." He shook his head. "That isn’t luck. That’s discipline. The kind that isn’t taught. It’s forged."

"So this is admiration?" Ren asked.

"More like arithmetic." Damon’s voice hardened slightly. "She wants to build something Lucien has forbidden, and I want him humiliated when she defies him. I want to watch Kael Ashbourne lose everything he’s ever touched, piece by piece, until there’s nothing left of him to salvage." He met Ren’s eyes. "Helping her build her healing house accomplishes both. Killing two birds with one stone has never troubled my conscience."

Ren studied him for a long moment. "The Supreme Alpha—I understand your hatred. But Alpha Kael? It’s always confused me."

Damon smirked bitterly. He didn’t like talking about Kael. Not really. He was an enemy he hated to speak of.

"I’ve known Kael since we were boys, and at a point, our fathers were friends."

Ren’s eyes widened in shock. He’d never heard this part.

"They were friends, but Kael made sure to ruin any existing and future relationships." His jaw tightened, hatred filling his eyes at the thought. "Kael stole a ledger that would’ve granted my father rank in the highest delegate back then. He stole the ledger, and his father made sure to forge his name on it. They stole my father’s position."

Ren’s expression shifted from shock to something darker. "He stole your father’s position?"

Damon’s jaw tightened. "The ledger contained records of every major trade route my father had secured over twenty years. It was his life’s work. His legacy. And Kael—" He laughed bitterly. "Kael was barely sixteen. He didn’t even understand what he was stealing. He just knew his father told him to do it."

"And your father?"

Damon’s eyes hardened. "My father never recovered from the humiliation. He spent the rest of his life trying to prove himself, but the damage was done. The council never trusted him again. He died a broken man, convinced he had failed our pack."

Ren was silent for a long moment. "And Kael’s father?"

"Alpha Gideon." Damon’s voice was flat. "He was a master manipulator. He knew exactly what he was doing. He saw an opportunity to weaken Bloodmoon and he took it." He paused. "I was sixteen when it happened. Too young to stop it. Too young to fight back."

"And you’ve been waiting ever since."

Damon scoffed. "Waiting was an understatement. Did you know what it took for me to build Bloodmoon into this?" He spread his arms apart. "This is my blood, my sweat, my soul."

"I was seventeen when my father died," Damon continued, his voice dropping lower. "Seventeen, with a dying pack, a mountain of debt, and a council that wanted to dissolve Bloodmoon and divide its lands among neighboring packs."

His jaw tightened. "The pack was dying, and it was a fast death. Everyone turned me down, including the previous Supreme Alpha. I finally built this pack brick by brick."

He laughed bitterly. "Do you know what Kael was doing when I was fighting to keep my pack from collapsing? He was being groomed to inherit Silver Creek. He was being handed everything on a silver platter while I was clawing through mud just to survive."

Ren’s expression had shifted. He had never heard this story before. None of it.

"I spent years rebuilding," Damon said. "Years of negotiating with merchants who laughed in my face. Years of begging for alliances that never came. Years of watching Kael Ashbourne take credit for things he had no part in building." He spat out.

His eyes hardened. "And then Sophia happened."

This part, Ren was aware of.

"Sophia was never meant to be mine—not at any point in my life—but then, I saw how crazy Kael was about Sophia. She was his one true mate and love. He was totally gone for her, and I knew right there and then I had my chance. Finally."

Ren’s eyes narrowed slightly. "You pursued her because of Kael."

"Of course I did," Damon said simply. "I hadn’t even looked twice at Sophia before I realized how much Kael wanted her. She was beautiful, yes. Charming, certainly. But she was also greedy. She was lower class, the kind I would never want. She was the kind of woman who would trade loyalty for status without a second thought."

He swirled the wine in his glass. "I made sure she knew exactly how much wealth Bloodmoon had. How much influence. How much power. I didn’t have to pursue her—she came to me."

Ren frowned. "But Kael was her fated mate."

"And yet, she chose me." Damon’s smile was cold. "Because I offered her more. More wealth, more status, more power. She convinced herself that the Moon Goddess had made a mistake, and that I was her true destiny."

"She left him for you."

"She left him under the pretense of his father’s interference. Made it look like she was being forced to leave, that she was the victim." Damon laughed softly. "She played the part beautifully. A dramatic departure that left Kael devastated and me... amused."

Ren was silent for a moment. "And you married her."

"I married her because I wanted to break Kael’s heart. I married her because I wanted him to know what it felt like to have something stolen from him." Damon’s voice hardened. "I didn’t love her, and I never pretended to. I treated her with the indifference she deserved, and she tolerated it because I gave her everything she wanted."

"But she eventually left you."

"She eventually became more trouble than she was worth." Damon’s tone was dismissive. "She was greedy and reckless, and when Kael came for her—"

"You let him have her."

Damon’s smile was cold. "Sophia was never a prize worth keeping. She was a tool, and she served her purpose. When Kael came crawling back, desperate to reclaim his ’fated mate,’ I didn’t fight him. I let her go."

"In all of this, my only issue had been how fast Silver Creek has been growing. It disturbed me greatly, and I tried hard to dismantle it. To find out who was pulling the strings and building that dead pack. But eventually I gave up, believing a Beta or Gamma was doing it." He paused, smirking. "Not until the auction did I realize who had truly been Silver Creek’s backbone. Evelyn Valemont."

He shook his head. "Now, not only will I use the same Evelyn Valemont to destroy Silver Creek, but I’ll also ruin the perfect balance Lucien has created so far."

Ren opened his mouth to speak but was cut off by a knock on the door.

A maid stepped inside and bowed low. "Alpha. He’s here."

Damon’s gaze lifted, the conversation with Ren already forgotten. "Bring him in."

A moment later, the door opened again, and a man stepped in—tall, plainly dressed, carrying the same calm composure Damon remembered well.

He bowed deeply. "Alpha. It’s been too long."

Damon’s mouth curved into a slow, satisfied smirk.

"Callum Voss."
