Chapter 3: Chapter 3
Kael’s words echoed through my head long after he stopped speaking.
You gave birth to a stillborn.
Sophia’s child survived.
Lily is theirs.
I stared at him while something inside me slowly broke apart beyond repair.
"No..." My voice came out weak and shaking. "No, you’re lying."
Kael’s expression never changed.
"You were unconscious for almost three days after the birth," he said calmly, as though he were talking about the weather instead of destroying my life. "The healers said your mind would not survive losing the child after everything your body endured."
I felt sick.
"So you thought replacing my dead baby with someone else’s was mercy?" My voice rose hysterically. "You let me hold her. You let me feed her. You let me believe she was mine!"
Lily flinched at my tone and buried herself deeper into Sophia’s arms.
Kael immediately stepped closer to them protectively.
For five years, I had believed this man and child were my family, but suddenly I was standing outside of it. Like a stranger.
"You should calm down," Kael said coldly. "Lily is still your daughter in every way that matters."
"In every way that matters?" I repeated. "She isn’t mine, Kael."
"She became yours the moment you raised her."
"You stole that choice from me!" I screamed at him.
Sophia lowered her gaze dramatically while rubbing Lily’s back soothingly.
"Please," she whispered softly. "Don’t upset her anymore."
I turned toward her so fast she stiffened. "You! You knew I was raising your child. You knew and I—" my voice cracked, my body trembling.
Of course she knew. The memories of the countless trips Kael would take lily on suddenly flashed in my head.
He’d been taking lily to see Sophia for three years!
Every time Lily called me mother while Sophia waited in the shadows knowing the truth.
How many times had they laughed at me?
How many times had Kael looked at me holding Lily and thought:
poor foolish Evelyn?
"My baby..." I whispered brokenly. "Where is my child?"
I looked directly at Kael. "Where did you bury my baby?"
For the first time since this nightmare began, something uncomfortable flickered across his face.
Then he frowned. "I don’t know."
"What?" I croaked out.
"The body was handled after the birth."
The body? This was his own child too and yet....
My knees nearly gave out, "You don’t know?" I repeated weakly.
Kael looked almost irritated now, "I didn’t care enough to ask where it was taken."
I stared at him while tears slid silently down my face. "How..." My voice cracked completely. "How can you do this to me?"
Kael exhaled sharply like I was exhausting him. "You are making this far more dramatic than necessary."
A hollow laugh escaped me.
He had stolen my child, buried my baby somewhere unknown.
Made me raise another woman’s daughter, And somehow, I was the one being dramatic.
"What exactly was my crime?" I whispered. "Tell me, Kael."
His brows furrowed slightly.
"What did I ever do to deserve this?"
"I loved you. I supported you when everyone abandoned you. I gave you my blood. I destroyed myself trying to save you."
"And this..." I laughed bitterly through tears. "This is how you repay me?"
Kael’s jaw tightened, "You still have Lily."
I stared at him in disbelief.
"You raised her for five years," he continued. "You love her. She loves you. Are you truly heartless enough to abandon her now?"
I couldn’t believe my ears, even now, he was trying to chain me to Silver Creek using the child I loved.
I still loved Lily. My chest hurt so badly I thought it might split apart.
Kael mistook my silence for hesitation.
"She needs stability," he said. "You leaving now would only traumatize her further."
Sophia suddenly stepped forward carefully with Lily still in her arms.
"Kael..." she said softly. "Please don’t pressure Evelyn too much right now."
I looked at them, at how Lily clutched Sophia tight as if I were a monster. At how Sophia stood beside Kael.
I shook my head and wiped my tears. "I love Lily, I truly do. But I won’t stay here a minute longer. Lily has you, doesn’t she? She has her mom too. You both will take care of her."
I walked out of the room, trying my hardest not to look back.
By the time I reached my chambers, my hands were trembling so badly I could barely push the doors open.
The servants inside immediately rushed toward me.
"Luna—"
"Leave me alone."
My voice came out sharper than intended.
I closed my eyes briefly before exhaling shakily. "Please... just for a moment."
In a second, they were all gone.
Tears finally spilled uncontrollably down my face. What kind of cruelty was this?
What have I done to deserve this kind of pain?
A knock sounded softly at the door but I didn’t answer. A few seconds later, the door slowly opened anyway.
Beta Tristan stepped inside and The moment I saw him, I knew.
"You knew too."
Tristan lowered his head shamefully, "Luna—"
"Wonderful." I whispered. "So everyone knew except me."
"No," Tristan said quickly. "Very few people knew the truth."
"But you did." His face paled, "How long?" I asked quietly.
Tristan swallowed hard. "Since the birth." He lowered his head. "I’m sorry."
"Where is my baby?"
Tristan went still and I saw guilt flash across his face. He closed his eyes briefly before reaching into his coat slowly.
When he pulled out a folded piece of paper, my entire body began trembling. "
"The southern forest," he said quietly. "Near the old moon shrine."
I stared down at the paper through blurred vision. That was where my child was buried, while I spent five years unknowingly raising another woman’s daughter.
"I buried him myself."
"A boy?" I whispered.
Tristan nodded and tears spilled instantly down my face.
I had a son. A son I never even got to hold properly.
"He was small," Tristan continued quietly, his voice rough with guilt. "But he looked like you."
"I hated myself every day for this," Tristan admitted softly. "But I still helped hide it."
At least he was honest. Unlike Kael
"Why?"
Tristan went silent for some seconds, "Because the Alpha ordered it."
I nodded, trying to regulate my breathing. I turned to Tristan. "You will do one thing for me before I leave. You owe me that much."
"Anything, anything you ask I shall do."
"I want every business contract I personally negotiated removed from Silver Creek immediately."
Tristan blinked slightly. "All eastern trade agreements too," I continued coldly. "Any merchant under Valemont sponsorship answers to me, not Kael."
"The northern ports?"
"Everything. I want the documents."
For a second, I thought Tristan would refuse but then he nodded with determination. "Give me an hour, Luna."
As I watched beta Tristan go, I wiped my cheeks dry. I was going to leave silver creek but I won’t leave a single thing behind.
With that I walked out of the room and headed straight to the healers wing.
The moment the doors opened, several healers froze. I understood why.
How many of them had known?
The scent of herbs and dried blood filled the air. Shelves lined the walls filled with countless bottles, powders, and healing mixtures.
My work.
The chief healer hurried toward me the moment she spotted me. "Luna Evelyn," she called anxiously. "You shouldn’t be walking around in your condition."
I looked at her quietly knowing she was the one who helped birth my child.
"Did you know too?"
The healer lowered her gaze shamefully. "I was ordered not to speak."
Of course she was.
I walked deeper into the healer’s wing, trailing my fingers across the shelves.
Every bottle here existed because of me.
Every cure, every healing tincture, every emergency remedy the warriors depended on during war.
I remembered cutting my palms open to mix my healing blood into medicine that could save dying wolves.
And for what? So they could strip me of everything the moment Sophia returned?
The chief healer suddenly stepped forward anxiously. "Luna... what are you doing?"
I knocked the entire shelves to the ground, watching the thousands of cure shatter.
"Luna!" The healer screamed.
"Do not stop me!" I screamed back.
"I created these medicines. My blood made them possible."
"And Silver Creek no longer deserves them."
One by one, I destroyed it all. Even the blood storage room where rows of containers filled with blood drained out of my body was.
I broke it all.
"Please stop," the healer said desperately. "Without these medicines, countless warriors will suffer."
"And where was that concern when your Alpha buried my child and lied to me for five years?"
"Silver Creek can survive without my blood now."
Just like Kael claimed it could survive without me.
