Chapter 30: Chapter 30

The news reached Kael in the middle of the afternoon.

He had been in his study, reviewing the latest financial reports—every page worse than the last. Callum stood before him, silent as a ghost as he watched Kael nearly rip the reports apart the more he read.

Aldric entered with a pale face and a folded parchment in his hand, and Kael glanced at him, already knowing he was coming with terrible news.

"Unless it’s news that Silver Creek has been reinstated to the First Houses list, I don’t want to hear it," he said before the Gamma could even speak.

Aldric shared a look with the Beta, then cleared his throat. His voice was strained. "Alpha, I’m afraid there’s something you need to see."

Kael didn’t look up. "What is it?"

Aldric hesitated. "It’s about Lady Evelyn."

Kael’s pen stopped moving. Slowly, he looked up. "What about her?"

Aldric crossed the room and placed the parchment on the desk. Kael stared at it for a moment, then picked it up.

His eyes scanned the words once, then twice, then a third time, as if repetition might somehow change what was written there.

"A partnership," he repeated, voice climbing with every word. "With fucking Damon?" He growled.

Kael crushed the parchment in his fist, his knuckles white. This had to be a lie—a big lie—and yet his mind ran back to when he’d seen Damon in Evelyn’s home.

"Alpha, the report came from a reliable source. It’s confirmed. Lady Evelyn and Alpha Damon have reached an agreement. They’re partnering to build a healing house," Aldric confirmed.

"The contract isn’t finalized, Alpha," Aldric said carefully. "Only the terms have been agreed upon. Word travels fast regardless."

The words were not reaching Kael again. No, his mind was running through it. Oh, he’d been a fool.

How could Evelyn do this? To partner with Damon of all people? The same Damon who stole Sophia. The same Damon who’d done nothing but try to ruin him—that was the same one Evelyn had now partnered with.

His fist tightened hard, and his jaw hardened. He turned away from them, staring through the window without actually seeing the grounds beyond it.

Of course, Damon had not gone to Evelyn’s estate merely to provoke him. He had gone there with a purpose.

"Perhaps it’s just business, Alpha. Perhaps—"

"Are you patronising me, Gamma? Because it sure sounds like it," he growled, and the Gamma shut up immediately.

"Damon has spent years looking for ways to undermine me. Now Evelyn walks out of my house with thirty-eight percent of Silver Creek’s wealth, and suddenly Damon wants to invest in her?"

"Not just invest," Callum said quietly, reading through the papers Aldric had brought for Kael.

Kael’s head snapped toward him.

Callum remained composed. "He is offering her access to Bloodmoon’s trade routes, resources, and his influence. If the healing house succeeds, Evelyn will have everything she needs to establish herself independently of Silver Creek."

The more Kael heard, the more he felt like he was being suffocated. How could this be possible? He was struggling, and Evelyn was succeeding?

"When did this happen? How recent is this news?" he asked Aldric.

"To my knowledge, it happened yesterday. Alpha Damon announced it in the pack’s briefing."

Pack’s briefing? Kael wanted to laugh. That bastard had done this intentionally. Nobody briefs their pack about the future plans of the pack. They just did it.

"Alpha, what are you going to do now? It is clear that Luna Evelyn—" Aldric paused, clearing his throat. "Lady Evelyn’s coins that she’s taken from Silver Creek will not only be directed at the healing house, but it will also help boost Alpha Damon’s Bloodmoon pack. With this, Bloodmoon will rise in ranks way more than Silver Creek."

The more Aldric spoke, the redder Kael got. Kael’s vision blurred with rage. "Bloodmoon will rise," he repeated, his voice hollow. "And Silver Creek will fall."

Callum watched him with that same unnerving calm. "Not necessarily, Alpha. There may still be a way to counter this." The Beta stepped forward.

Kael’s head snapped toward him. "How?"

Callum stepped forward, his hands clasped behind his back. "Lady Evelyn’s partnership with Alpha Damon is not yet formalized. The contract hasn’t been signed. That means there’s still time to disrupt it."

"Disrupt it how? She won’t listen to me. She made that abundantly clear."

"Perhaps not," Callum agreed. "But the Supreme Alpha might."

Kael’s eyes narrowed. "Lucien?"

"He issued a decree forbidding anyone from doing business with Evelyn Valemont. Damon is openly defying that decree. If Alpha Lucien learns of this partnership, he may be inclined to... intervene."

Kael was silent for a moment, his mind racing. Callum was right. Lucien had threatened Evelyn. He had made it clear that anyone who sided with her would face consequences.

If Lucien knew about Damon’s involvement...

"I need to see the Supreme Alpha. Prepare my horse," Kael said, already moving toward the door.

---

The pack house grew quieter once Kael’s carriage disappeared down the drive.

Callum found himself, not for the first time, drawn toward the eastern gardens. He paused by the wall, watching the child carefully.

She was crouched near the fountain when he found her, examining something in the grass with concentration.

"What have you found?" he asked, keeping his distance, his voice light.

Lily looked up, unbothered by the stranger’s presence the way children so often were. "A beetle. Look, it’s got wings under its shell."

"May I see?"

She held out her cupped hands, and he knelt beside her, close enough to see the small green beetle she’d captured.

"It’s pretty, isn’t it?" She looked at him, grinning. Two of her teeth were missing, which made her even more endearing.

Callum smiled back, raising his hand to pet her hair only to pause.

"Lily." A harsh voice came. He looked up to see Sophia walking toward them, frowning.

"Mommy," Lily cried out, holding the beetle as she rushed toward Sophia, but before she could touch her, Sophia shoved her back slightly, making her stumble.

"Get that filthy creature away, Lily."

The girl frowned, pouting. "But, Mommy..."

"Now!" she snapped, and the girl flinched, the beetle gone from her hands. Sophia turned to the nursemaid who’d come running.

"Take her away and do not let her out of your grasp. Leaving her with strangers. Shall I punish you?"

The nursemaid paled, bowing frantically. "Forgive me, my Lady. It won’t happen again."

"It certainly won’t." Sophia’s voice was ice. "Now take her inside. I’ll deal with you later."

The nursemaid scooped Lily into her arms, hurrying away as the child’s protests faded into the distance.

Sophia waited until they were gone before turning to Callum, her expression hardening. "And you—stay away from my daughter."

Callum remained where he was, his hands clasped loosely behind his back. "I was merely being friendly, Lady Sophia. She’s a charming child."

"Lily is none of your concern."

"Everything in Silver Creek is my concern now." Callum smiled, but it didn’t reach his eyes. "I am the Beta, after all."

Sophia’s jaw tightened. "You’re not Beta. Tristan was Beta. You’re just—"

"An interloper?" Callum’s voice was soft, almost amused. "I prefer to think of myself as an upgrade."

Sophia’s eyes blazed with fury. "I know what you are. Do not forget that."

Callum raised a brow. "Do you? Then I suppose you shall tell Alpha Kael, won’t you?"

Sophia’s jaw tightened hard. She pointed a finger at him. "Whatever plans you’ve made. Else—"

Callum stepped closer. "Else what, Lady Sophia? You shall tell the Alpha?"

Sophia glared at him hard. "You’ve been warned. Stay away from my daughter." With that, she stormed off, her hands tightened into fists.

Callum stayed behind, watching her retreating figure. All in due time, he knew that much.
