Chapter 34: Chapter 34
The ride to Lucien’s pack was a blur. In reality, it wasn’t close to Valemont, but perhaps the anger and frustration she’d held in her heart made it feel faster.
Soon they were outside the pack’s gates. In a distant memory, Evelyn recognized the pack. It wasn’t the first time she’d been here. She shoved the memory aside—it didn’t matter.
The gates were opened, and the carriage rolled into the pack. They finally arrived.
Evelyn strode toward the entrance, her boots striking the ground with purpose. Tristan followed close behind, his hand resting on the hilt of his sword.
The guards at the gate bowed. "My Lady, state your purpose."
"I’m here to see Alpha Lucien," she said, warily eyeing the pack.
In minutes, she was directed to the Alpha’s wing. She wasn’t surprised a man like Lucien had an Alpha’s wing. People like him couldn’t mix with others.
She was halfway down the corridor when a woman stepped into her path, arms crossed, expression already hardened with dislike.
"You must be Evelyn Valemont." The woman’s eyes swept over her, unimpressed. "General Ashira. I command the Supreme Alpha’s forces." She didn’t move aside. "You’re not on today’s schedule."
"I do not need to be. I’m here to see the Supreme Alpha. Inform him."
The woman, Ashira, smirked like she couldn’t believe her ears.
"Demanding to see the Supreme Alpha? I must admit, you’ve got more guts than I was informed." She straightened up. "Lady Evelyn, you do not have an appointment. Without one, the Supreme Alpha cannot as much as glance at you."
With that, she motioned for two guards to come. "These trusted men will escort you out of the premises. Do well to book an appointment before wasting your time travelling here."
The two guards moved to grab Evelyn’s arm, but Tristan stepped closer to her, his hand on the hilt of his sword.
"One move and I’ll forget my sword in your arm," he warned lowly.
Ashira’s eyes narrowed, though she didn’t signal the guards to press forward. "You’d draw a blade in the Supreme Alpha’s own pack."
"I’d draw a great deal more than that," Tristan said evenly, "before I let anyone put hands on my Lady Evelyn."
For a moment, no one moved. Then a door further down the corridor opened, and the sound of several voices spilled into the hall. A meeting was clearly still in session.
Evelyn didn’t wait for permission. She pushed Ashira aside and walked straight toward the room.
"LUCIEN!" she yelled. "LUCIEN!"
She didn’t address him by his title or his pack name. He deserved no formality after what he’d done.
She burst into the room, yelling his name like he owed her. The room went silent instantly.
A dozen Alphas sat gathered around a long table, several she recognized faintly from the auction, all of their heads turned at once.
Lucien sat at the head of the table, his expression giving nothing away.
Ashira appeared in the doorway a half-second later, breathless with fury. "My Lord, forgive the intrusion, I tried to—"
"How dare you, Lucien!" Evelyn said, pointing a finger directly at him, ignoring every other person in the room entirely. "You didn’t just come for Bloodmoon. You came for Valemont. An entire pack that has nothing to do with any of this, and you starve them because I dared to stay under their roof? Is that how your power works? You oppress innocent packs?"
"You will address the Supreme Alpha with respect," Ashira snapped, stepping forward again. "Or you will be removed."
Tristan, who had been by her side, turned backward to face the General, hand on the hilt of his sword. He knew they were greatly outnumbered, but he would never back down from a fight, especially one protecting his Lady.
Lucien’s eyes narrowed at the sight, his jaw hardening. "Leave us."
The Alphas all got to their feet, exchanging uneasy looks as they left the room. Eventually Ashira left, and only then did Tristan step out.
Lucien rose slowly from his chair, his eyes never leaving hers. The room felt smaller now, as if his very presence was pressing down on her.
"Have you lost whatever is left of your decorum?" His voice was low, dangerous. "Barging into my pack, shouting my name like a common fishwife, demanding an audience as though you have any right to one?"
Evelyn didn’t flinch. "You blocked Valemont’s trade routes."
"I did."
"You’re a coward for doing so."
Something flickered in Lucien’s eyes—anger, quickly suppressed. "Careful, Lady Evelyn."
"Coward," she repeated, stepping closer. "You call yourself Supreme Alpha, but you’re nothing but a bully. A man who thrives on the fear of others. You hide behind your power and your authority while you destroy innocent packs. You don’t care about the masses. You care about control."
Lucien’s jaw tightened.
"You speak of order," Evelyn continued, her voice rising, "but all you’ve ever done is create chaos. You rule through fear, not respect. You destroy anyone who dares to challenge you. And you call yourself a leader?"
"You don’t care about the merchants. You don’t care about the people who will lose their livelihoods because of your decree. You don’t care about the families who will go hungry when their trade routes disappear."
She laughed bitterly. "Your late mate must be so proud of the man you’ve become."
Lucien moved before she could blink. His hand shot out, gripping her arm with enough force to make her gasp, his eyes had gone red.
"You’ve crossed a line," he growled, unable to hide his anger this time.
Evelyn met his gaze without flinching. "You crossed it when you said my child was already dead. When you stood in my home and dismissed my son like he was nothing."
She held his gaze, refusing to look away.
"Did you forget, Supreme Alpha? Or have you buried that memory along with your conscience?"
Evelyn leaned closer, her voice dropping. "Lift the ban on Valemont. I don’t care what you do to me. I don’t care what you do to Bloodmoon. But Valemont is innocent, and I will not stand by while you destroy them because of me."
Lucien’s jaw worked. "Valemont dug their own grave when they chose to harbour a woman like you."
"A woman like me?" Evelyn laughed, cold and sharp. "You mean a woman who refuses to bow? A woman who dares to challenge the great Supreme Alpha?"
She yanked her arm free from his grip.
"Then the entire realm is sinking," she said, her voice steady, "because they’re all harbouring a man like you. A tyrant who hides behind his title and calls it leadership."
Lucien’s eyes blazed. Her words echoed in his head—in this same room, in this same position four years ago, she’d raised her finger at him... again, she was doing the same.
"I’m giving you twenty-four hours," Evelyn continued, her voice cold as ice. "Retract your command on Valemont, or I’ll show you exactly why you should never have made a scorned woman your enemy."
With that, she stormed out of the room.
