Chapter 38: Chapter 38

Evelyn looked up, her brows furrowing. "A man? Who is he?"

"He wouldn’t give his name. But he said it was urgent." Clara hesitated. "He’s waiting in the hall."

Evelyn exchanged a glance with Tristan, then stood from her chair. "I’ll see him."

Tristan followed her out of the study while Varek remained at the desk, his eyes still searching the documents.

In the entrance hall, a man stood with his back to her, his posture straight, his shoulders broad.

He turned as she approached.

He was tall, with blond hair. His face was lean, angular, with a sharp jaw and a mouth that curved into a smile when he saw her.

"Evelyn Valemont. It’s really you."

Evelyn froze. "Soren?"

Soren was someone she never thought she’d see again—not after he left the realm.

"You remember." He said it like it surprised him, pleased despite himself. "I saw you at the Supreme Alpha’s pack today, you know. I was in the meeting you barged into, but you didn’t see me."

Evelyn’s mind immediately went back to the morning, trying to remember if she’d seen him. But she truly hadn’t. "I’m sorry. I had rather a lot on my mind."

"So I’ve heard." His smile turned wry.

Varek, who had been in the office, stepped out, brows raised in surprise. "Soren? As in—" He looked between Soren and Evelyn, clearly amused. "The boy who used to trail after Evelyn every summer like a lost pup?"

Soren laughed, rubbing the back of his neck. "That would be me, yes."

His gaze flickered back to Evelyn. "I left the day after your wedding, you know," he said, once Varek had withdrawn far enough not to hear. "Did anyone ever tell you that?"

Evelyn blinked. "No. I didn’t know that."

"I didn’t expect you to." He rubbed the back of his neck, something almost sheepish in the gesture despite his height, despite the years that had clearly hardened him since she’d last seen him as little more than a boy trailing after her through Valemont’s gardens. "There wasn’t much reason to stay, once you’d made your choice. I told myself it was for the best. New territories, new opportunities. I built quite a life for myself out there, actually."

"Soren—"

"It’s not an accusation," he said quickly, cutting her off before the conversation could tip somewhere neither of them wanted it to go. "I’m only telling you so you understand why I’m here now, instead of years ago. I heard about the divorce before I heard about anything else happening in this realm. It reached me faster than news of my own father’s passing, if I’m honest." He then paused, his face hardening. "Might I speak with you? Privately."

Evelyn’s smile dropped. "There’s nothing you could say that they can’t hear."

"It’s private," he said, gentler this time. "Please."

Evelyn looked at him for a second, then nodded. Varek walked toward the study, though Tristan lingered several paces back, arms crossed, clearly not intending to leave entirely.

Once they were far enough, Soren’s expression hardened slightly. "I overheard what you said to the Supreme Alpha."

Evelyn’s gaze sharpened. "You overheard?"

"I was in the meeting you barged into. When you called him a coward. When you gave him twenty-four hours." Soren’s voice dropped lower. "I heard everything."

Evelyn studied him carefully. "And? Have you come to warn me off? To tell me I’m making a mistake?"

Soren shook his head slowly. "No. I came to help you."

Evelyn blinked, caught off guard. "Help me?"

"My father was a member of the First Houses for forty years." Soren’s jaw tightened. "He died recently."

"I’m sorry."

Soren nodded once. "Thank you. His death is actually why I’m back in the realm."

Soren left the realm years ago—Evelyn knew this much.

"His death is the main reason I’m back. There are things to settle. His estates. His investments. His alliances. I discovered that my father had spent the last twenty years building relationships far beyond this realm."

Evelyn’s attention sharpened.

"I don’t know if you’re aware, but I also don’t operate within the realm the way most Alphas do. My business is elsewhere. Other territories. Other kingdoms. Other people. Which is why this would be more beneficial to you."

Soren reached into his cloak and produced a small leather-bound book, its pages worn, its cover soft with age. He held it out to her.

"This belonged to my father. I think it will help you greatly."

Evelyn glanced at the book but didn’t take it, even though she was desperate.

"What do you expect in return?" she asked instead.

"Nothing," Soren replied easily.

Evelyn looked up sharply. "Everyone expects something."

"I don’t."

"Then you’re either a fool or you’re hiding something," she said as she took the book from him.

"I’m neither of these things... consider it help from an old friend."

Evelyn stared at him for what seemed like minutes, then nodded. "Thank you, Soren. It’s good to have you back in the realm again."

He stepped closer, and for a second, Evelyn thought he was going to embrace her. She immediately extended her hand out instead.

Soren stopped. He looked at her outstretched hand, then up at her face. Then he shook her hand.

"Good to see you again, Evelyn." His gaze lingered a beat too long. "Especially now that you’re free of Kael."

With that, he inclined his head and took his leave, disappearing back through the gates the way he’d come.

Evelyn stared at his retreating figure a while longer than necessary, then turned only to find Tristan staring at her.

"Can he be trusted?" Tristan asked, his gaze hadn’t moved from the gate long after Soren had vanished through it. "He held that book like it cost him something to hand it over. Men who give things away freely don’t usually look like that when they do it."

"You noticed that too."

"I notice everything about a man who looks at you the way he just did." Tristan’s jaw was tight. "He wants something, my Lady. Whether it’s information, an alliance, or something else entirely, I couldn’t say. But no one crosses paths with you twice in one day without a reason."

Evelyn shrugged. "I don’t know." She looked down at the book still in her hands. "It’s been years since I last saw him."

She opened the book, scanning the first page, her eyes widening slightly as her eyes moved faster down each line. Whatever she found there made her go very still.

"My Lady?" Tristan stepped closer.

When she finally looked up, a slow smile had spread across her face.

"It looks like I can."
