Chapter 41: Chapter 41
"Lady Evelyn Valemont. I believe we have unfinished business."
Lucien’s gaze swept across the room, seeing Alpha Damon of Bloodmoon and Alpha Soren. His jaw tightened slightly. Since he’d heard of Damon’s partnership with Evelyn, he hadn’t seen the said man—after all, their relationship had never been cordial.
Both men were standing within arm’s reach of Evelyn.
While Varek had now stepped out of the office, hearing that the Supreme Alpha had arrived in the pack. Behind Evelyn, standing a few meters away, was Tristan, who of course wouldn’t let her out of his sight.
Lucien’s gaze fell on Evelyn once again. "I see you have quite the company. A word, privately."
Evelyn raised her brows, her gaze shifting from his entourage to the woman right behind him—General Ashira.
"No."
Lucien was taken aback, his brows lifted ever so slightly. "I don’t ask twice with anyone in this realm, Evelyn."
"Then consider this a first," she replied calmly, ignoring the way Lucien’s eyes widened slightly with anger.
"Lady Evelyn, you are crossing all boundaries here. Alpha Lucien governs over this entire realm. You should show some respect," Ashira gritted out.
Evelyn’s gaze slid past Lucien to settle on the General instead, unbothered. "I’ve shown him precisely as much respect as he’s earned. If you’d like the tally, I’m happy to provide it."
Ashira’s jaw tightened, but a single look from Lucien silenced whatever she’d been about to say.
Lucien stepped forward, his gaze never leaving Evelyn. "This matter is not for public ears."
Evelyn’s expression didn’t waver. "Then it will remain unspoken, Alpha Lucien."
"Evelyn—" Lucien’s voice dropped, a warning edge creeping in.
"You heard her." Damon stepped forward, positioning himself slightly in front of Evelyn. "If you have something to say, say it here. In front of all of us. Or leave."
Lucien’s eyes flicked to Damon, cold and assessing. "You speak for her now?"
Damon’s jaw tightened. "I speak as her partner. Whatever it is you have to say, you say in front of us all, as the lady has said."
Evelyn rolled her eyes internally. She stepped forward, making Damon step to the side.
"No one speaks for me. Nor does anyone need to. Only I speak for myself, and I say no. If you have something you’d like to say, Alpha Lucien, then you say it publicly."
Something flickered across Damon’s face—not quite offense, but close to it—though he said nothing further.
A tense silence stretched between them. Soren remained still, watching the exchange. Tristan’s hand rested on his sword, ready to move if necessary. Varek stood in the doorway, his face pale, his eyes fixed on the Supreme Alpha.
Lucien’s attention had never fully left Evelyn. "You’ve made your point about privacy, Lady Evelyn. Clearly." His voice was low, in the way of a man working very hard to remain so. "I have nothing to say to you that requires it, apparently. So I’ll say it here."
"Then say it." Evelyn crossed her arms. "Though I’ll save you the trouble. I have nothing to discuss with you either, unless you’ve come to tell me the ban on Valemont has been lifted."
"It hasn’t."
"Then we truly have nothing to discuss," Evelyn spat out.
"We have everything to discuss." Lucien’s jaw tightened, his composure fraying at the edges for the first time since he’d entered the hall. "You will stop whatever campaign you’ve begun against me. The rumors. The reports circulating through every pack in the realm. It ends, Evelyn. Now."
Evelyn looked him in the eye. "I have started nothing, nor do I appreciate the Supreme Alpha accusing me."
Ashira’s eyes twitched where she stood. She wanted nothing more than to speak, yet she couldn’t—not without the Alpha’s permission.
"Are you saying those rumors have just spawned out of nowhere? That you had no hand in those atrocious things being said about me?"
"Exactly that, Alpha." She paused, letting it sink in. "If you think that I, a mere woman who was cast out of her own home and pack, whose title was stolen from her, would somehow have such a way to spread such rumors about the Supreme Alpha, then I have land to sell you on the Calloway cliff."
Lucien’s jaw hardened. He stepped closer—much closer, not even a pup could pass between them. "Lady Evelyn, I will ask this just once. End it all."
Evelyn looked him in the eye, unflinching. "You want it to end, Alpha Lucien? It’s simple. Lift the ban on Valemont. That’s the only thing that ends any of this."
Lucien’s jaw worked, something dark moving behind his eyes. "You think you hold that kind of leverage over me."
Evelyn smirked. "Do I not? Look again at where you are, Alpha Lucien." She gestured around.
For a long moment, Lucien said nothing, his eyes burning with anger it couldn’t be hidden.
"Then let me be equally plain," he said finally, his voice dropping colder than before. "If the false reports continue, I will make sure being blocked from trades and guilds is the least thing Valemont will face." His gaze shifted to Varek behind Evelyn. "You govern over this pack, and yet you allow this... I can see you do not care about your people like you’ve claimed. But I warn you, Varek Valemont. If this isn’t stopped, I shall make sure Valemont becomes something of the past."
Varek’s face went rigid, though he said nothing.
Evelyn stepped forward, putting herself squarely between Lucien’s line of sight and Varek. "You’ll address me, Alpha Lucien. Not him. This is my doing, whether you believe that or not, and I won’t have you threatening a man who’s done nothing but shelter someone you’ve decided to punish."
"He harbors you," Lucien said. "That makes him complicit."
"He’s my family," Evelyn said, and for the first time her voice cracked slightly. "Complicit in what, exactly? Refusing to throw a woman into the street because the Supreme Alpha demanded it?"
Lucien’s jaw tightened, but he didn’t retreat.
"You speak of leverage," he said instead. "Let me remind you of mine. I don’t need proof to ruin a pack, Evelyn. I only need will. And you have tested the very limits of mine these past days."
Lucien stepped back, his face hard. "You’ve made your choice, Lady Evelyn." He turned toward the door, his entourage parting to let him through. "I hope, when Valemont finishes bleeding out, you find the leverage was worth what it cost you."
He stormed out of the pack house, Ashira fast on his steps. Outside, Marcus stood, waiting, eyes filled with hope only to be dashed on seeing the anger in Lucien.
Marcus finally broke the silence. "Did you settle things with her, Alpha?"
"No," Lucien replied.
"Alpha—"
"She wants to prove how stubborn she can be." Something almost amused moved behind Lucien’s eyes, though there was no warmth in it at all. "Very well. I’ll show her exactly how stubborn I can be in return."
Marcus shared a look with Ashira, who somehow looked even angrier than the Alpha. He sighed, knowing this wasn’t ending soon. Even if Valemont bled, the First Houses would lose more than they should...
All of this for a woman...
Who exactly are you, Evelyn Valemont? he thought to himself.
