Chapter 221: Chapter 221 Sudden Spiraling
_Brielle’s POV_
My mother practically had to drag me down the hallway of the medical center, her arm locked tightly around mine like a pair of iron handcuffs.
I could barely hear the sound of our high heels clicking against the floor over the loud, rushing noise thundering inside my ears.
I was burning with a rage so hot, so utterly suffocating, that it felt like pure, concentrated poison running through my veins.
Every single elder we passed in the corridor pulled back to give us space. Some sneered at me openly, their lips curling in amusement, while others leaned close toward each other, whispering behind their hands like a pack of vultures.
Just one short hour ago, those exact same people were smiling warmly at me, bowing their heads in deep respect, calling me a medical prodigy, and praising my family’s noble name.
Now, they were looking at me as if I were a piece of filthy trash scraped off the very bottom of their expensive shoes.
It was all Rowena’s fault. That arrogant, scheming, low class woman had planned this entire nightmare from the very beginning! She had deliberately orchestrated my public downfall, humiliated me in front of the entire pack council, stripped away every single ounce of my medical pride, and made me look like a pathetic, incompetent fool in front of Alaric.
When we reached the wide double doors of the recovery room, I peeked through the small glass viewing window, desperately hoping to find just a tiny sliver of sympathy or comfort from Aunt Kristy.
After all, I was the one who had spent days visiting her, bringing her gifts, and trying to secure her comfort.
Instead, what I saw through that glass made my blood boil even hotter.
Kristy was sitting up in her hospital bed, resting comfortably against her pillows. Her face was flushed with a deep, dark shadow of absolute embarrassment. She wasn’t even looking in my direction. In fact, the moment her eyes caught mine through the window, she flinched and turned her head away in deep shame, as if I were a complete dangerous stranger who had tried to murder her on the operating table.
Even worse, Aunt Kristy had reached out with both hands and taken hold of Rowena’s fingers.
I watched through the clear glass as the stubborn, arrogant old woman lowered her head, her lips moving rapidly as she offered Rowena a full, tearful, humble apology for calling her a thief and a fraud earlier in the morning.
Rowena just stood there beside the bed, her posture straight, her eyes completely calm, accepting the old woman’s desperate apology like a gracious, merciful queen forgiving an ignorant peasant.
Alaric stood right beside Rowena, his hand resting possessively over her waist, looking down at her with a gaze filled with such intense devotion that it made my stomach churn with violent nausea.
That shameless, pathetic old woman, I thought viciously in my mind, my fingernails digging so deep into my palms that they nearly drew blood as I glared through the glass.
“Just one hour ago, you were singing my praises to the entire room and declaring to the world that Rowena was nothing but useless trash! Now, the second her stupid metal leg works without blowing up, you drop your dignity and beg for her forgiveness? You have no pride at all! You are nothing but an ungrateful snake!” I thought internally, not daring to say it out loud.
I wanted to burst through those double doors, tear Rowena away from Alaric’s arms, and scream at Kristy until my throat bled for being such a hypocritical, fake coward. I wanted to smash her new mechanical leg to pieces right in front of her eyes.
But I knew the harsh reality of my situation. If I stepped a single foot into that room right now, Alaric’s guards would grab me by my hair and drag me out into the dirt like a feral dog.
"Brielle, sweetie, please come along," my mother whispered frantically, her voice trembling as she yanked hard on my sleeve to pull me away from the window before someone inside noticed us staring. "We need to leave through the back entrance immediately before the news reporters and paparazzi gather at the main front gates!"
I violently snatched my arm out of my mother’s tight grip, turning around to glare at her with wild, furious, bloodshot eyes. "Leave?! How can we just leave like defeated dogs, Mother?! Did you see how those people treated me in there? Did you see how Kristy looked at me?! Rowena set me up, she humiliated our family, and everyone in that room just took her side without a second thought!"
"Keep your voice down, Brielle!" my mother hissed under her breath, grabbing my shoulder and frantically pulling me down an empty side corridor away from the main lounge area.
She looked around nervously in both directions to make sure no pack guards or chatty nurses were listening before turning back to face me with a worried expression. "I know how upset you are, my darling girl. I am absolutely furious too! But right now, we need to get you out of this hospital and let the dust settle. Your father is already down at the council hall talking to the senior elders, doing everything he can to damage control this nightmare before it hits the evening newspapers."
"Damage control?!" I let out a loud, bitter, hysterical laugh that echoed off the walls of the corridor. "There is no damage control for this, Mother! My entire career as a pack doctor is completely, totally ruined! Everyone thinks I am a fraud! And Alaric... Alaric looks at me with pure disgust!"
My mother let out a soothing sigh. She reached out with both hands, gently smoothing down my messy, unwashed hair and cupping my flushed, sweaty cheeks.
Her voice softened into that sweet, coddling tone she always used whenever I threw a dramatic temper tantrum as a little girl.
"Listen to me very carefully, Brielle," my mother said gently, her eyes locked onto mine. "You are a Logan. You come from one of the oldest, wealthiest, and most powerful noble bloodlines in this entire territory. A single bad day, a single failed medical project, is not going to destroy us. We will figure a way out of this, I promise you on my life. But right now, you look completely exhausted. You haven’t eaten a real meal in days, you haven’t slept, and your nerves are completely shot. Let us just go back to our private estate. I will treat you to a wonderful, extravagant dinner at that high end seafood restaurant downtown. Or if you prefer, I can personally step into the kitchen and cook your favorite prime steak dinner myself, exactly the way you like it."
I stared at my mother, a massive wave of dark, foul, disgusting anger washing over my entire body.
Did she honestly think a home cooked steak or a fancy dinner was going to fix the absolute disaster that had just destroyed my entire future? Did she truly believe that a plate of food could wipe away the image of Rowena standing victorious while I was brought down to my knees in front of the whole pack council?
"A good meal?" I spat, my voice dropping into a harsh venomous sneer as I violently slapped her hands away from my face. "Are you completely out of your mind, Mother?!"
My mother flinched backward in shock, looking deeply hurt and startled by my sudden burst of violence, but I didn’t care about her feelings in the slightest.
"I don’t want your stupid cooking, and I don’t want a meal!" I screamed, taking an aggressive step right into her face as hot tears of pure rage finally spilled over my eyelashes and streamed down my pale cheeks. "I don’t care about food! I want Rowena ruined! I want her stripped of every single thing she has, I want her dead in a ditch, and I want Alaric back on his knees begging for my forgiveness!"
Without waiting for my mother to utter another word, I spun around on my heels, wiped the hot tears from my face with the back of my hand, and stormed down the long back exit hallway toward the waiting car, leaving her standing all alone in the corridor.
