The darkness offered no rest.
Aseren came back gasping, his palms scraping against hot stone until the skin split. He lay there in the orange sulfur glow, chest heaving, waiting for the phantom weight of Vaelgor’s last strike to lift from his ribs.
The physical damage was gone, wiping the slate clean every time he reformed. But his nervous system remembered. His brain held onto the electrical static of every blade and claw that had torn his soul apart.
Fourth gate. Fifth gate. Pushing closer to the sixth.
He pressed a hand against his chest, feeling the steady rhythm of his own heart, and beneath it, the dormant, monstrous engine of the Elder Beast trying to claw its way out.
He knew the rules by heart, curse it all. He had plagiarized the entire Soul Ingress system straight off the wiki for his own web novel, never once imagining he would have to live through its nightmare logic. A foreign entity required an opening: physical trauma, broken sanity, the complete collapse of the host. Vaelgor was running a meat grinder, trying to shred Aseren’s identity to ribbons until nothing of the original owner was left to resist the takeover.
"It’s breaking through," Aseren gasped, coughing blood onto the dirt as his throat seized up, "every damn time I die, it gets closer to the passage of my literal soul!"
A tremor rolled through the stone. The walls of the Heartscape groaned, warping as the suffocating wave of primordial Ether swept down the corridor.
Vaelgor was returning.
Running only prolonged the humiliation. Aseren pushed himself up, wiped a smear of dark crimson from his chin, and looked inward.
If this was his soul, brute force was a waste of time. Vaelgor possessed infinite power density; trying to out-punch an ancient god-parasite with walls and barriers was useless. But he had learned something through the execution loops.
The mind remembers how it was built.
When Aseren died, he did not wake up mangled. The inner world automatically pieced his flesh back together because that was the only shape his ego recognized. He did not need to build armor. He just needed to force the memory of his own skin to overwrite the wound before the next blow landed.
The shadow in the doorway detached itself from the wall.
Vaelgor lunged.
Aseren did not blink. The jagged black limb punched straight through his lower abdomen, bursting through his spine in a hot spray of fluid. The agony was immediate and absolute. His lungs seized. His eyes rolled upward as his internal organs shredded around the impact point.
Before the scream could leave his throat, Aseren slammed his will into the image of his unblemished form.
Whole.
The flesh snapped back together. Torn tissue knitted itself instantly, sealing around the wound before the blood hit the stone. The pain remained—his nerves screamed with the static of trauma—but the hole was gone.
Vaelgor wrenched its limb free, a guttural, distorted sound vibrating from the darkness.
The beast struck again. A massive claw cleaved through his shoulder, taking muscle and bone with it.
Whole.
The arm reformed in a heartbeat.
Another strike crushed his jaw.
Whole.
The bones locked back into place with a sickening crunch.
Aseren staggered backward, coughing violently, his lungs burning with copper and adrenaline. Every single blow registered. Every time the beast tore him open, his body experienced the full horror of execution. But as the seconds bled into a rhythmic cycle of violence, something in his chest shifted.
The terror started to thin out.
It was replaced by a cold, grinding irritation.
"Is that really all you have?" Aseren spat, wiping a spray of blood from his lips.
Vaelgor lunged again. A massive spike of darkness pierced his lung.
Whole.
"You’ve been alive for centuries," Aseren wheezed, his fingers curling into tight, trembling fists as his tissue regenerated around the foreign mass, "and your best trick is stabbing me?"
The Elder Beast roared, a sound that bypassed his ears and vibrated directly inside his skull, rattling his teeth. It swept its arm sideways, taking off half his torso in a single arc of shadow.
Aseren gasped, his vision tunneling to pinpricks of white.
Whole.
He snapped back together, gasping for oxygen, his knees buckling before he caught himself against the vibrating stone wall. His sanity was fraying at the edges. The constant loop of dying and un-dying was pulling his consciousness apart, threatening to drag him down past the sixth gate toward the absolute dark of the seventh.
He knew the danger. If his mind broke completely, Vaelgor wouldn’t even need to fight him.
Which meant he could not afford to panic. He had to lean into the absurdity of it.
"You’re burning through centuries of stored Ether," Aseren muttered, a thin, hysterical laugh slipping past his lips, "just to kill a guy who keeps standing back up."
Vaelgor did not answer. It descended upon him like a collapsing storm, limbs thrashing, tearing him apart in an absolute frenzy of destruction.
Head. Chest. Throat.
Torn. Shattered. Erased.
And every single time, before the darkness could swallow him for good, Aseren’s stubborn, spiteful human will forced his flesh to remember itself and dragged him back into the room.
Whole.Whole.Whole.Whole.Whole.Whole.Whole.Whole.Whole.Whole.Whole.Whole.Whole.Whole.Whole.Whole.Whole.Whole.Whole.Whole.Whole.
He stopped dodging. He stopped trying to run down the endless corridors of his own mind. He stood in the center of the chamber, taking the hits, burning through the agony, and forcing his soul to stitch itself together faster than the beast could shred it.
It was an exhausting, brutal stalemate. Vaelgor had all the power in the universe, but Aseren had the one thing an ancient parasite could never anticipate: the sheer, pathetic stubbornness of a man who refused to be inconvenienced by his own murder.
Aseren wiped a fresh stream of blood from his forehead, his breathing ragged, his eyes bloodshot and unblinking.
"Go ahead," he whispered, staring down the towering, shifting nightmare of teeth and shadow with a twisted, exhausted grin. "Do it again."
***
The darkness refused to let him stay dead.
Aseren hit the floor gasping, spitting dark blood onto the hot stone. His ribs were whole, his skin was intact, but his nervous system was still screaming with the ghost fire of a dozen executions.
He didn’t get a second to catch his breath.
A heavy, suffocating weight dropped onto his chest. Before Aseren could throw his will at the image of his own flesh, a thick, tar-like tendril coiled around his throat, hoisting him into the air.
He clawed at the shadow, his fingers sinking into freezing, shifting mass.
"What—"
A sharp click echoed through the chamber. Not the sound of bone breaking. Something worse.
Aseren’s left arm went dead.
He gasped, his eyes flying wide as a secondary wave of agony hit him. It wasn’t the clean, fast slice of a blade this time. Vaelgor wasn’t killing him anymore. The massive, shifting storm of darkness peeled back, revealing hundreds of microscopic, needle-thin threads of raw Ether that sank directly into Aseren’s nervous system like barbed wire.
The beast wasn’t rushing to end the loop. It had figured out the trick.
If quick deaths just let Aseren snap back to zero, then killing him was a waste of time. Vaelgor wanted to break the machine from the inside out.
Aseren screamed as the parasitic threads began to twist. They locked every joint in place while the entity’s consciousness flooded directly into his brain. It was a cold, ancient, suffocating intelligence forcing its way behind his eyes, tearing open his memories, and peeling back the layers of his identity like dry parchment.
"Get out," Aseren choked out, blood spilling past his teeth. "GET THE FUCK OUT OF MY HEAAAAAAAD!!!!!!!!!."
The entity answered with pure, unadulterated pressure.
Vaelgor bypassed his physical body entirely, seizing his ego by the throat and dragging him backward through the inner architecture of his soul. They crashed past the fifth gate, tearing down the stone thresholds, skipping straight toward the deeper, darker threshold of the sixth gate.
Aseren felt his sense of self begin to stretch thin. His name, his past life, the web novel he had written, the wiki pages he had memorized—the memories started to fray at the edges, dissolving into white noise.
The entity wanted to unmake him piece by piece while he was fully conscious to watch it happen.
Every nerve ending in his body burned as if soaked in acid. Vaelgor slowed the process down, dragging out the agony of a single second into what felt like hours, making sure Aseren felt every ounce of his mind being hollowed out.
His vision turned to static. The stone room, the orange glow, the endless corridors of the Heartscape began to dissolve into a sickening swirl of black and red.
If I give in here, I’m done.
A distant part of him almost welcomed the thought.
Maybe that’s for the better.
If his sanity snapped before the sixth gate, Vaelgor wouldn’t just take his body. The Elder Beast would completely unmake him into a mindless puppet, and Aseren would become a corpse driving his own flesh.
He couldn’t use the regeneration trick anymore. There was no physical wound to fix. This was a war of raw consciousness, and he was being flayed alive from the inside out.
Aseren gritted his teeth so hard a molar cracked. Blood filled his mouth.
His hands, pinned by the shadow-threads, twitched.
Vaelgor’s presence pressed down harder.
It felt like something enormous was trying to crush his soul into the ground, forcing him to submit.
And the worst part was how casually it did it.
After everything Aseren had endured, the thing still looked at him like he was nothing more than a bug beneath its foot.
Something about that snapped inside him.
Hatred surged through his chest, hot and immediate.
Not fear.
Nor desperation.
Hatred.
Aseren let out a wet, strangled laugh that bubbled up through the blood in his throat, his eyes locking onto the shifting mass of the beast with a look of sheer, unhinged defiance.
"You arrogant piece of shit," Aseren wheezed, his voice trembling as the entity tried to rip away his memories. "You’ve existed for centuries. You’re an ancient, god-damned terror."
The pressure on his brain spiked, threatening to crush his consciousness into dust.
Aseren didn’t blink. He leaned straight into the agony, feeding the hatred until it choked out the fear entirely.
"And you’re spending all that infinite power throwing a tantrum inside some random guy’s head because you can’t even break a human’s soul," Aseren spat, his smile bloody and razor-thin. "You’re pathetic."
The entity’s pressure exploded violently, a silent roar of cosmic fury that rattled the entire sixth gate.
Aseren didn’t care. He stopped fighting the pull and instead took every ounce of his fractured, bleeding ego, wrapping it in pure, venomous spite, and dug his heels straight into the floor.
You want to tear me apart? Fine. Let’s see how much of my hatred your ancient ego can swallow before you choke on it.
***
The sixth gate screamed.
The black water around the stone slab boiled with ancient Ether as Vaelgor hit a wall it could not break.
Aseren wasn’t yielding. His mind, already frayed and worn down to raw nerves, locked into place with a terrifying, absolute tenacity. Vaelgor had spent centuries reigning as an untouchable terror, crushing every soul that ever opposed it. But it had never encountered anything like this. Aseren’s grip on self-preservation was entirely gone.
Survival wasn’t the point anymore. If he went down, Vaelgor was coming with him.
Aseren forced his way into Vaelgor’s consciousness.
He gave the beast everything it had put him through. Every death. Every broken bone. Every second of pain.
He stopped caring what happened to himself. If Vaelgor wanted to tear him apart, fine.
Aseren would tear it apart first.
For the first time, the ancient beast hesitated.
The monster realized it was losing. The human’s absolute, unyielding stubbornness was threatening to shatter them both into hollow shells.
Panicking as its mind began to fray, Vaelgor abandoned the sixth gate entirely.
The mass of shadow surged forward, violently forcing its way past Aseren to break into the deepest, darkest bottom of the Heartscape.
The Seventh Gate.
The last one.
The entity tore through the bottom of Aseren’s soul, searching for whatever was keeping him anchored.
Instead of a weapon, it found an eye.
The void peeled back.
The presence in the sanctuary didn’t simply loom over him.
It was everywhere.
Aseren felt the air leave his lungs. The space around him seemed to buckle beneath an invisible weight, and the walls of the Heartscape began to crack, not like stone, but like something far more fragile.
For a moment, he couldn’t even understand what he was looking at.
There was nothing Aseren could make sense of. No shape, no form, only an endless stillness stretching farther than his mind could follow.
His head throbbed violently. Every instinct screamed at him to look away, but he couldn’t. The longer he stared, the more unbearable the silence became.
He wanted to claw his own brain out just to make it stop.
The universe itself suddenly felt small.
Fragile.
Like something that could disappear without ever being noticed.
A single fraction of her gaze turned toward Vaelgor.
Vaelgor knew that feeling.
It had felt it before, long ago, when it first looked into the Outer Sea and understood how small it truly was.
Everything it had ever feared was standing before it again.
Vaelgor cowered. The ancient terror shriveled, its massive shifting form folding in on itself, reduced to a shivering, pathetic mass of whimpering shadow.
From the terrifying void, a voice echoed. It didn’t belong to a god or a monster. It was light, airy, and jarringly childish, humming with amused curiosity.
"...Ew. What is this messy thing crawling around in my favorite toy box? Shoo. Go away. You’re getting dirt all over my poor little hero’s nice, sad story."
A soft, playful giggle sliced through the cosmic silence.
"...You’re making a terrible mess of my script, little flea. Back in the box. The author isn’t done torturing him yet."
It paused, and everything went still
"...Aww, look at the big ancient horror shaking. You don’t get to write the ending, little parasite. My tragic hero’s story is mine to break."
The sheer cosmic shock incinerated Vaelgor’s ancient pride, shattering his sanity completely under the weight of her gaze. The beast shrieked in primal, absolute terror.
With Vaelgor broken and its spirit crippled, Aseren stepped out of the shadows.
He reached into his own chest cavity inside the Heartscape, his hand wrapping around Vaelgor’s pulsing, defeated core.
Aseren spoke, his voice cold and flat.
"Behave."
He crushed the beast’s core.
The internal dark fractured.
In the real world, reality snapped back. Aseren’s physical hand plunged straight into his own chest with a wet crunch, gripping the secondary pulse and subduing the thrashing parasite.
Across the floor, Aurelia gasped, staring in terrified awe as Aseren stood tall from the verge of death.
