This should have been a perfect ending.

A reconciliation spanning a thousand years, the older generation passing its lessons to the new, and the tragic grandeur of a hero in his twilight years.

However—

“Um... sorry to interrupt.”

An utterly ill-timed voice, one that was even a little punchable, abruptly cut into the moment.

Logaris stepped forward, completely ignoring the touching atmosphere of this “great reconciliation of the ages.” He pulled out a notebook and a pen from his coat, his eyes shining with a fervor even greater than during the battle just now as he stared fixedly at Maggie.

“Is the reminiscing part over? If it is, can we talk about something serious?”

Maggie was taken aback. “Something serious?”

“Yes. Something serious.”

Logaris pushed up his glasses. The pen in his hand tapped rapidly against the notebook, producing an irritating series of clicks, while his face remained both solemn and feverishly excited.

“That White Dragon King’s Sigh you used earlier—the details of that projection were far too realistic. Not just the appearance, but even that unique pressure and mana signature. There’s absolutely no way that was imagined out of thin air.”

Logaris raised his head. The mismatched eyes behind his lenses glimmered with investigative hunger as he stared at Maggie as if she were a gold mine waiting to be excavated.

“In the current magical world, most records concerning dragons have been severed by history. What remains is, for the most part, drunken nonsense made up by bards. But dragons have vanished from this continent for far too long. That projection of yours... it was a reconstruction based on real data, wasn’t it?”

He stepped even closer, completely disregarding the fact that the person before him was a legendary mage who had only just been fighting him to the death.

“I want to know whether you truly came into contact with those ancient overlords. Or perhaps even dissected them? Does this tower preserve detailed physiological charts and ecological records of the ancient dragon race? Their mana-organ operating mechanisms? The energy conversion rate of dragon crystals? Or records of dragon blood purification and rejection responses?”

A deathly silence fell over the scene.

Roland’s mouth opened slightly, and the dignified bearing of the Hero King nearly slipped for a moment.

Sylvia covered her face in pain, wishing she could crawl into a crack in the ground. She had actually been worried just a moment ago that this man might lose himself the way Maggie had? This guy was clearly just a research lunatic with no emotional circuitry at all! At a moment like this, he was talking about academics instead of life?

Maggie, meanwhile, was so stunned she almost laughed from sheer exasperation.

Looking at this young man who refused to follow any normal pattern, the gloom that had been weighing on her suddenly vanished.

“You...”

Maggie pointed at Logaris, her finger trembling, whether from anger or amusement even she did not know. “I nearly killed you just now, and you’re actually asking for my experimental records? What exactly is inside your head?”

“Unknown knowledge.”

Logaris answered with perfect righteousness. “Do you understand what it means if we can obtain firsthand information about dragons? It means we can attempt to replicate alloys based on dragon-scale structures, improve dragon-blood potions, and perhaps even... determine where they actually went. To the entire field of magical biology, that would be priceless.”

At that point, he paused, then added, “Besides, since you’re clearly not going to die anytime soon, there’s no interest to be gained from hoarding that knowledge. You might as well hand it over to me. I guarantee it’ll shine and generate heat in my laboratory.”

“Not going to die?”

Maggie felt as if even her spirit body were trembling. True, the battle just now had gravely damaged her vitality, and her spirit body had grown so faint it was nearly transparent.

But looking into Logaris’s eyes—pure, greedy, and yet incomparably clear—she suddenly remembered her younger self.

Back then, when she had sought to uncover the secrets of the world, she had probably looked just as recklessly alive as this.

“Hahaha...”

Maggie suddenly laughed. Her laughter grew louder and louder until it made the surrounding space tremble. Though weak, it carried a long-lost sense of exhilaration.

“Good! Very good! Shine and generate heat, is it!”

She shot to her feet. In that instant, the aura of the Mad King returned to her once more. But this time, it was no longer the pressure of destruction. It was the gravity of inheritance.

“You want to uncover the secrets of dragons? You want control of this tower?”

“Then take it! Let me see what earth-shaking things you, you madman who knows not the height of heaven or the depth of earth, can dig out from these forgotten relics of history!”

Maggie paid no attention to Logaris’s impatient expression that all but screamed hurry up. She merely waved her hand lightly, and two ghostly blue flames ignited within her once-cold eyes.

“Words are pale, Logaris. Sylvia. Open your eyes wide.”

“In that primordial age, when even writing had not yet been born, they stood at the apex of the sky itself. Rather than calling them living creatures, it would be more accurate to call them incarnations of the world’s will draped in scales.”

As mana rippled from her fingertips, the dim room was instantly swallowed by illusion. The surrounding walls melted away, replaced by an ancient and violent world.

“First, the four pillars that formed the material world—the ultimate natural disasters on the physical plane.”

Maggie waved her hand, and the scene changed abruptly. The earth became scorched wasteland, the sky was shrouded beneath endless black smoke, and a crimson shadow vast enough to blot out the heavens spread its wings amid a lava waterfall tens of thousands of feet high.

“The Red Dragon King, Ignix, the World-Burner. It governed ‘fire’ and ‘destruction.’ Wherever it flew, rock turned to glass, rivers evaporated into nothingness, and all that remained was charred earth and unbearable heat that would never fade.”

Towering waves froze in midair, transforming into a crystal-clear wall of glacial ice. Beneath a frozen sea ten thousand meters deep, a dark blue colossal beast drifted silently, and every flick of its tail unleashed a tsunami.

“The Blue Dragon King, Marifondus, the Colossus of the Sea. It was the tyrant of ‘water’ and ‘life.’ It could raise tsunamis capable of sweeping across continents, and it could also descend with a judgment of absolute zero, freezing all things into eternal stillness.”

Then came a shriek of violent wind, so sharp that it almost pierced the ears within the illusion. The clouds were torn apart, and a green dragon silhouette streaked across the heavens at a speed beyond sound itself, dragging behind it hurricanes powerful enough to rip the earth open.

“The Azure Dragon King, Viridion, Sovereign of the Sky. It controlled ‘wind’ and ‘weather.’ It could strip all air from an entire region to create a vacuum death zone, causing tens of thousands of living beings to suffocate in an instant as their lungs burst apart. It could also summon superstorms capable of annihilating civilizations.”

Finally, the illusion grew incomparably heavy, as though the gravity of the entire space had increased severalfold. A massive yellow-brown dragon, so enormous it seemed like a walking mountain range, took a single step, and each footfall sent out devastating earthquake waves.

“The Yellow Dragon King, Terragon, the Spine of the Earth. It was connected to the leylines and governed ‘earth’ and ‘gravity.’ It could alter gravity with ease, crushing the bones of its enemies and even bringing floating cities crashing down. It is said that the continent’s present tectonic divisions were all the handiwork of this tyrant.”

Logaris’s breathing grew heavier and heavier. “Perfect elemental command... a perfect lifeform!”

“Don’t rush. That is only the foundation.” Maggie let out a cold laugh, and the light in her eyes deepened into something unfathomable. “There are four more Dragon Kings, and what they governed was something more abstract—and more powerful—than the elements themselves.”
