The Mirror Master

Chapter 42: A Small Gesture

Lu Bai looked at the two skeletons, lost in thought.

’I wonder if the Ancient Mirror on my chest has anything to do with these two.’

Judging by the scene, the two of them must have taken each other out in a case of mutual destruction.

Lu Bai circled the two skeletons.

The skeletons outside were long since shattered and misshapen.

These two skeletons in the cave, however, were perfectly preserved. ’It must be because their Cultivation was higher, so their bones didn’t decay.’

When he first woke up in Black Tiger Stream, he had been too weak and unfamiliar with his surroundings to explore.

’I never expected to gain so much by returning here to hunt that Ghostly Creature.’

’But why did only the person on the left drop a Storage Pouch? I didn’t see any on the person on the right or among the pile of skeletons outside.’

’Could it be that the person on the left collected everyone else’s Storage Pouches and put them all into this one?’

’What a huge score!’

At this thought, Lu Bai gloated inwardly. He took out the Storage Pouch he had just tucked away and began to study it.

After trying for a while, he couldn’t figure out the right method and was unable to open it.

’I’ll put it away for now and deal with it later.’

Lu Bai put the Storage Pouch away again, his gaze falling upon the Vajra Demon-Slaying Pestle in front of him.

’Just from the weapon’s name, you can tell it’s a treasure.’

’My apologies.’

Lu Bai thought to himself and stepped forward, trying to pry open the finger bones of the man on the right, which were gripping the Vajra Demon-Slaying Pestle.

But no matter how much strength he used, the man’s finger bones wouldn’t budge an inch!

Even though this person had been dead for many years, his flesh and blood long turned to dust, his remaining bones still possessed an unshakeable strength.

’Forget it.’

’Even if I managed to take this big Golden Pestle, it would be inconvenient to carry.’

’Besides, this thing is too conspicuous.’

’I don’t know the reason these two died here.’

’My Cultivation isn’t high enough; I can’t afford to attract disaster over a single weapon.’

’I’ll come back for it later when I’m strong enough.’

Lu Bai searched the area a bit more. Finding no other treasures, he started walking toward the outside.

As the light of the Exorcism Talisman gradually dimmed and finally went out, Li Yue’er and Xiaodie still couldn’t find the cave entrance they had come from.

Their surroundings plunged back into darkness, falling deathly silent.

The two gripped each other’s hands tightly, their nerves stretched so taut they could even hear each other breathing.

Without the Exorcism Talisman, the Ghostly Creature could attack them at any moment!

Their only saving grace was that the Black Dog had stayed by their side the whole time.

An unknown amount of time passed before a faint light seemed to flash and disappear in the darkness ahead.

The next moment, their vision distorted and the space around them collapsed.

It was still dark all around, but something seemed different.

The bone-chilling cold was gone.

The chirping of insects, the sound of the wind, and the rustling of leaves all returned to their ears. Everything felt incredibly real.

Even the faint howls of wild beasts in the distance sounded unusually pleasant at that moment.

’Has the Illusion Realm created by the Ghostly Creature disappeared?’

Feeling a gentle breeze from behind, Li Yue’er suddenly turned to look.

The cave entrance had reappeared, just a few steps ahead of them.

They had been fumbling through the cave for a long time, only to realize they had just been walking in circles.

Just then, the soft sound of footsteps echoed from deep within the cave.

The hearts of both Xiaodie and Li Yue’er leaped into their throats again as they stared ahead nervously.

A tall figure emerged from the darkness, growing clearer and clearer.

"Young Master Lu?"

Looking at Lu Bai’s familiar face, the two still didn’t dare to relax, their expressions filled with suspicion.

Having just escaped the Illusion Realm created by the Ghostly Creature, they couldn’t be sure if the "Lu Bai" before them was just another of its transformations.

"Let’s go. The Ghostly Creature is dead."

Lu Bai said before walking straight out of the cave.

The Black Dog got up and followed him.

Seeing this, Li Yue’er finally let out a sigh of relief, her pounding heart finally settling.

’A Five-Black Dog shouldn’t mistake its master.’

Li Yue’er pulled Xiaodie by the hand. "Young Master Lu isn’t dead! Let’s get out of here too!"

The two of them ran the few steps to the entrance and quickly scrambled out.

Gazing at the moonlight and the starlight above, they both felt a weight lift from their hearts, as if they had taken a trip to the Ghost Gate and back, returning to the world of the living.

"Young Master Lu, is the Ghostly Creature dead? How did you kill it?"

Curious, Li Yue’er couldn’t resist stepping forward to ask.

’Even if the Ghostly Creature was heavily injured by Senior Brother Yu, Lu Bai is just a mortal with limited means.’

Lu Bai said, "Not long after entering the cave, I saw Xiaodie walking toward me in a panic, saying she’d gotten separated from you. I guessed it might be the Ghostly Creature in disguise, so I threw a handful of Cinnabar at it...

The Ghost Fire on it was extinguished, revealing its true form. I seized the opportunity and used Daoist Yu’s Peach Wood Sword to kill it."

His words were half-truth, half-lie, but the general gist of what happened was there.

He had simply omitted the existence of the Ancient Mirror.

Li Yue’er thought to herself, ’I saw that Ghostly Creature’s abilities with my own eyes. Young Master Lu’s fight with it must have been incredibly dangerous. He must be downplaying it because he’s afraid of worrying us.’

At this thought, Li Yue’er’s admiration and respect for Lu Bai grew. She bowed slightly and said, "Young Master Lu, thank you for your righteous intervention in avenging my Senior Brother Yu!

I have no way to repay this debt of gratitude. If there’s anything you need in the future, Young Master Lu, just come find me at Danding Temple. I will not refuse."

’That sounded a bit familiar, like she was just making an empty promise.’

’Who knows what the future holds.’

’It’s better to get paid on the spot.’

Lu Bai cleared his throat. "Well, you don’t have to go so far as to say you have no way to repay me. A little something would be fine..."

"Huh?"

Li Yue’er froze for a moment before it dawned on her. She stammered, "But I... I don’t have anything valuable to give you..."

As she said this, her face instantly flushed red, though who knows what she was thinking.

"What’s that small pouch at your waist? The material looks nice."

Exasperated, Lu Bai had no choice but to guide her step by step.

"Ah!"

Li Yue’er came to her senses and quickly explained, "This is a Storage Pouch. It requires Magical Power to open. Even if I gave it to you, Young Master Lu, you wouldn’t be able to use it."

’I see.’

Lu Bai understood.

’Looks like I won’t be opening the Storage Pouch in my robes anytime soon.’

Seeing that Li Yue’er still wasn’t getting the hint, Lu Bai had no choice but to continue prodding. "Since it’s called a Storage Pouch, it must hold a lot of things, right?"

Li Yue’er looked ashamed. "Young Master Lu, I’m only on the Third Floor of the Qi Refining Stage. My master just rewarded me with this Storage Pouch. There’s really not... ah!"

Li Yue’er suddenly thought of something. After a moment’s hesitation, she made her decision.

She gathered Magical Power in her palm, slapped the Storage Pouch at her waist, and a Small Jade Bottle appeared in her hand.

"Young Master Lu, I have an Enlightenment Pill here."

Li Yue’er continued, "You cultivate the Martial Dao. After you step into the Inner Strength Realm and need to stimulate your Nine Acupoints, you’ll definitely find a use for it."

Lu Bai’s eyes lit up.

’This was good stuff.’

He’d heard Xiaodie mention that a single Enlightenment Pill was worth three Spirit Stones!

Lu Bai smacked his lips. "Only one? I have a big appetite. A single pill is hardly a mouthful."

Li Yue’er was speechless.
