The Mirror Master

Chapter 53: Brother Xiaolu

Xiaodie was still unconscious.

Fortunately, the Luo Family was a major clan in Bluestone County. A few casual inquiries were all it took to find their residence.

Lu Bai placed Xiaodie on the horse’s back, dismounted, and supported her with one hand while leading the horse with the other, heading toward the Luo Family’s estate.

Before long, he arrived before a massive estate. Two stone beasts stood guard at the entrance, an impressive sight that marked it as a truly grand and noble household.

Two guards also stood at the gate.

The sight of Lu Bai gave them a shock, and they immediately grew wary, sizing him up from head to toe.

After all, Lu Bai’s physique was simply astounding. His mere approach exuded an inexplicable, oppressive aura!

"Wait... is that Miss Xiaodie on the back of the horse?"

One of them frowned, murmuring in surprise.

"It really is her!"

The other guard recognized Xiaodie as well.

The two guards hurried forward. One demanded, "Who are you? What happened to Miss Xiaodie?"

"My name is Lu Bai. Your young miss, Luo Qing, sent for me. There was a bit of an accident on the road."

Lu Bai explained briefly.

’He dropped Luo Qing’s name to avoid wasting his breath and starting a pointless conflict.’

Hearing Luo Qing’s name, the two men exchanged a glance.

"Right this way, young man."

One of them led the way, giving the other a meaningful look.

Lu Bai helped Xiaodie off the horse and followed the guard inside.

Lu Bai asked, "Is your young miss at home?"

"The young miss isn’t home, but we’ve already sent someone to inform her."

The guard said, "Please rest here for a moment, young man. Someone will be with you shortly."

He led Lu Bai and Xiaodie to a side hall and had them take a seat. The guard then stood watch at the door, peering inside from time to time.

’This man’s origins are a mystery, and Miss Xiaodie is unconscious. I can’t just let him leave.’

Lu Bai saw through the guard’s intentions but didn’t mind, his expression remained calm.

’Even if they weren’t watching him, he had to hand Xiaodie over to Luo Qing personally.’

’If something did happen to her, it would be difficult to explain.’

"Where are they? Where are they!"

Before long, a gruff, deep voice boomed from outside, sounding like a man in his forties or fifties.

It was followed by a flurry of footsteps, which sounded like two people hurrying over.

"Second Young Master, Third Young Master."

The guard saw them approaching from a distance and hurried over to greet them, murmuring a few words in a low voice.

Immediately after, Lu Bai saw a tall, burly youth with the build of a tiger storm into the room.

At his side was another youth of a similar age, with a lean, strong build and a calm expression.

"What did you do to Xiaodie?!"

The burly youth’s eyes were wide as he stormed in, immediately bellowing at Lu Bai in a hostile tone.

’His voice sounded like that of a man in his forties or fifties.’

’But in reality, the youth looked no older than fourteen or fifteen.’

’He remembered Lu Yun mentioning that Luo Qing had two younger brothers, both fifteen years old.’

’These must be them.’

The Third Young Master, however, didn’t speak. He went straight to Xiaodie’s side and checked her pulse. His expression relaxed slightly. "Her life isn’t in danger," he said. "It seems like cold yin energy has invaded her body, causing a fever."

"Hao Shan, go to the rear hall and grab a few doses of medicine. And bring Doctor Liu here," the Third Young Master instructed the guard.

"Right away!"

The guard acknowledged the order and trotted off.

"Even if her life’s not in danger, it’s not acceptable! We need to get to the bottom of this!"

The Second Young Master continued to glare at Lu Bai, his voice laced with threat. "Even if Xiaodie is just our big sister’s handmaiden, she’s still one of our Luo Family! We won’t let her be bullied!"

"Second Brother, you and your temper."

The Third Young Master frowned in exasperation. "I never said we weren’t going to get answers. Besides, we’ve already sent for our sister. He’s right here; it’s not like he can run away."

"Kid, you’d better start talking before my sister gets back."

The Second Young Master held up his large hands and cracked his knuckles, producing a series of sharp pops. "If my big sister gets back first," he said, "you’ll really be in for it!"

"Is your sister really that tough?"

Lu Bai asked with a smile.

The Second Young Master suddenly flinched, a flash of fear in his eyes. "When our sister starts hitting people, she’s vicious! She’s basically the number one Fierce Beast in the world!"

"Sigh, our sister was supposed to get married, but it’s a shame her fiancé wasn’t so lucky. Because of that, we’ve been steering clear of her lately, afraid we’ll provoke her and get a beating."

The Third Young Master nodded in solemn agreement.

The Second Young Master suddenly snapped back to his senses and glared. "Why am I telling you all this?! Stop changing the subject and spit it out!"

The Third Young Master suddenly thought of something. He looked at Lu Bai suspiciously and asked, "Your name is Lu Bai? We know a Lu Yun from Liuxi Town. What’s your relation to him?"

Lu Bai replied, "Lu Yun is my older brother."

"Is that you, Xiaolu?"

Just then, a voice came from the doorway.

The next moment, a woman in green robes walked in, the Cyan Cloud Sword hanging at her waist.

Though travel-worn, her heroic spirit and radiant, beautiful face could not be concealed.

"Sister!"

The Second Young Master, who moments ago had been furious and hot-tempered, instantly became as meek as a lamb upon seeing Luo Qing and greeted her obediently.

"Move aside!"

Seeing him planted in front of Lu Bai and Xiaodie, blocking her path, Luo Qing snapped and raised a hand to push him aside.

The moment Luo Qing raised her hand, the Second Young Master flinched in fear, ducking his head and leaping to the side.

For someone so big and burly, his movements were surprisingly nimble.

"Xiaolu, what happened?"

Luo Qing asked as she walked toward Lu Bai.

Seeing Luo Qing enter, Lu Bai quickly rose to his feet and bowed. "Sister Luo."

Before, when Lu Bai had been sitting with a commanding presence, it wasn’t as obvious.

But now that he was standing, his tall and powerful frame was on full display, exuding a rugged aura.

Just a few days ago at the Chen Martial Arts Hall, they had been about the same height.

Now, as they stood facing each other at close range, Luo Qing had to tilt her head up slightly just to meet his eyes.

"You..."

Luo Qing was momentarily stunned.

She had always seen Lu Bai as a child, but now, sensing the change in his presence and aura, she felt a vague sense of unease and instinctively took half a step back.

The Second Young Master standing nearby was startled when he saw Lu Bai rise.

"How is he even taller than me?"

Lu Bai gave a simple account of what had happened over the past two days.

He mentioned Madam Zhou’s role in the affair but omitted the fact that she had died by his hand.

Lu Bai said, "After Daoist Yu died, we went to avenge him and finally killed the evil spirit."

Luo Qing’s brows furrowed, her gaze sharp as she processed this new information.

’Madam Zhou’s Ghost Cultivation brought disaster upon the Lu Family, leading to Lu Yun’s death.’

’Then the evil spirit escaped, and Daoist Yu died as well.’

’As for Lu Bai claiming that "we" went to avenge Daoist Yu, Luo Qing didn’t take him seriously.’

’It was probably Daoist Li who killed the evil spirit. Xiaolu was young, so it was understandable that he’d say it that way to save face.’

Lu Bai didn’t mention the incident with the mountain bandits.

’That sort of thing was sensitive; even if nothing happened, it could easily ruin a woman’s reputation.’

’Once Xiaodie woke up, she could explain everything to Luo Qing herself.’

A short while later, Doctor Liu arrived. He prescribed some medicine for Xiaodie and said she would be fine after a few days of rest.

Only then was Luo Qing finally able to relax.

After the flurry of activity to get Xiaodie settled, Luo Qing finally made the introductions to Lu Bai. "This is my second brother, Luo Ben. He’s straightforward, bull-headed, and stubborn as a mule, but he’s not a bad person. And that’s my youngest brother, Luo Xiao."

"A pleasure to meet you, Young Masters."

Lu Bai greeted them.

"There’s no need to call them ’Young Master.’ Just use their names."

Luo Qing said, "This is Lu Bai. He’s older than you two, so from now on, you’ll call him Brother Xiaolu. Got it?"

Luo Xiao nodded. "Brother Xiaolu."

Luo Ben’s eyes darted around for a moment, and he mumbled, "Xiaolu..."

The "Brother" at the end was completely inaudible.
