The Mirror Master

Chapter 84: The Ghost’s Knock

Lu Bai didn’t hurry to leave.

The Old Gambling Ghost would be quick anyway.

A stall owner in the distance saw Lu Bai and couldn’t help but come over. "Young man, why don’t you come take a look at my stall? I have Five Emperors Coins, too."

"Next time for sure."

Lu Bai offered a faint smile.

"Damn it! Eleven smalls in a row, who could’ve predicted that? The dice must be rigged. Crooked house!"

Just then, the Old Gambling Ghost emerged from the gambling den, a pack on his back and curses on his lips.

He was even faster than last time.

"What are you waiting here for?"

The Old Gambling Ghost ran into Lu Bai as he came out. He pursed his lips and said, "Bad luck today. No more gambling. I’m packing up and heading out."

With that, he ignored Lu Bai and headed down the street.

"See you tomorrow, Old Gambling Ghost."

Lu Bai said with a smile, waving goodbye.

Hearing this, the Old Gambling Ghost stumbled and nearly fell. He muttered something under his breath as his figure vanished into the night.

Lu Bai stared into the darkness, lost in thought.

The Old Gambling Ghost was different from the other swindlers and con men running the stalls.

You could actually find real treasures at his stall.

He was addicted to gambling, yet he only ever played one hand a day.

If he lost, he would leave immediately.

He wouldn’t even set up his stall.

Lu Bai found him hard to figure out.

’If he were some reclusive master, there would be no need to make himself look so disheveled and pathetic.’

Lu Bai had even observed him from a distance with the Eye of Illusion but hadn’t seen anything unusual.

’Then again, maybe I’m overthinking it.’

Since he couldn’t see through the man, there was no point in dwelling on it.

There was still plenty of time.

’If I check in every night and get something good each time, maybe one day I can assemble a complete Gold Coin Sword...’

Lu Bai mulled it over as he walked back to the Luo Family estate.

The Black Dog was sitting in the courtyard, its head tilted slightly upward, bathing in the moonlight in a strange posture.

When it saw Lu Bai return, the Black Dog silently rose, followed him inside, and lay down by the door to take a nap.

Lu Bai didn’t rest right away. He lit an oil lamp and, by its light, took out the Desolate Emperor Mother Coin and the Desolate Emperor Coin to compare them.

They looked more or less the same, though there seemed to be some subtle differences.

But if both coins were mixed together, he’d have to guess which one was the Mother Coin without the help of the Ancient Mirror.

The knowledge involved in this field was too specialized.

Lu Bai didn’t dwell on it. He put the Desolate Emperor Coin in his left pocket and the Desolate Emperor Mother Coin in his right.

’As long as I keep them separate, I’ll know which is which.’

Lu Bai sat cross-legged and focused his mind on the Ancient Mirror.

After comprehending the Dragon Elephant Suppression Skill, besides the Inner Power Heart Method, it also gave rise to a Secret Technique—the Dragon Elephant Suppression Stele.

He hadn’t had a chance to try it since returning from outside the city.

Now, in the dead of night, was the perfect time to study this Secret Technique.

According to the Secret Technique’s description, one could condense Blood Qi into a sky-piercing stone stele to suppress all in its path!

Lu Bai followed the Mantra Heart Method of the Secret Technique, channeling his Blood Qi to try and form the stele in front of him.

The moment he activated the Secret Technique, he felt his Blood Qi surge wildly out of his body.

In an instant, his Blood Qi showed signs of being completely depleted!

Lu Bai quickly stopped the Secret Technique, inwardly shocked.

’The Dragon Elephant Suppression Stele consumes way too much Blood Qi!’

At his current Cultivation level, he wouldn’t be able to form it even if he exhausted all his Blood Qi.

But this, in turn, made Lu Bai even more expectant.

’The more Blood Qi it consumes and the harder it is to form, the more powerful it must be, and the higher its potential!’

Lu Bai grew even more curious about the Ancient Mirror.

’What is the origin of this mirror?’

The darkness beneath its surface was profound, clearly hiding another space.

Those two Dragon Elephant Souls had suddenly emerged from the depths of the Ancient Mirror.

Lu Bai tried to store some items in the space within the Ancient Mirror, but it didn’t react.

Although there was a space inside the Ancient Mirror, it couldn’t be used for storage.

’Could it be one of the Thirty-Six Wondrous Treasures or the Seventy-Two Exotic Treasures?’

Lu Bai had only heard the Old Gambling Ghost mention them once; he had no idea what specific treasures were on the lists.

It had been less than two months since he’d transmigrated.

His understanding of this world was still too limited.

’I wonder what the world outside is like. I wonder if I’ll ever get to see the kind of Magic and Divine Powers that can boil the seas and set Heaven ablaze, that can summon wind and rain...’

Lying in bed, filled with curiosity and anticipation for this new world, Lu Bai gradually drifted off to sleep.

He didn’t know how long he had slept when a sudden chill startled him awake, goosebumps prickling his skin.

"WHIMPER!"

The Black Dog, which had been guarding the door, shot up, its eyes wide open. It stared intently at the door, a low growl rumbling in its throat as its fur stood on end.

"Hm?"

Lu Bai’s sleepiness vanished in an instant. His eyes sharpened as he leaped out of bed, grabbing the Peach Wood Sword from his bedside.

When he beat up Sun Bohan earlier, he’d had a fleeting thought that it might produce a Soul Light.

He never expected an evil spirit to actually come knocking on his door!

"KNOCK KNOCK KNOCK."

A knocking sound came from the door.

Through the moonlight, a blurry figure could be vaguely seen standing in front of the door.

Lu Bai narrowed his eyes.

’Ghostly Creatures and evil spirits, even at the level of a Little Ghost or Great Ghost, have incomplete souls. They can’t take physical form, let alone cast a shadow.’

But through his Eye of Illusion, Lu Bai could see clearly that the figure at the door was indeed radiating a sinister Ghost Qi.

It was far more powerful than any of the Ghostly Creatures he had ever encountered!

’Is it a Fierce Ghost, or a Painted Skin Ghost?’

"Brother Xiaolu, it’s me. Are you asleep?"

Luo Ben’s voice sounded from the doorway.

Lu Bai’s heart sank.

’If it’s a Painted Skin Ghost, then Luo Ben is already dead.’

’If it’s a Fierce Ghost, its Seven Spirits would be complete, granting it a massive power boost comparable to the Golden Core Realm. With my current abilities, I probably can’t subdue it.’

Lu Bai took a deep breath, calmed his Heart and Spirit, and hid the Peach Wood Sword behind his back. He walked toward the door, calling out, "Coming."

Arriving at the door, Lu Bai braced himself and slowly opened it.

Luo Ben was standing right there in the doorway, dressed in wide sleepwear. He smiled at Lu Bai and said in a low voice, "I couldn’t sleep. I’m having some trouble with my Cultivation Technique and wanted to ask for your advice, Brother Xiaolu."

Luo Ben’s smile was a bit stiff and unnatural, as if his muscles were being pulled by some external force.

Luo Ben’s condition was clearly different from the Painted Skin Ghost he had killed during the day.

When viewed with the Eye of Illusion, that Painted Skin Ghost had a ghostly shadow hidden beneath human skin.

But now, the Ghostly Creature before him seemed to have merged with Luo Ben, its body burning with a raging Ghost Fire and emanating a bone-chilling cold!

’It’s not a Painted Skin Ghost.’

’Ghost Possession?’

The thought suddenly flashed through Lu Bai’s mind.

’This is an ability only a Great Ghost possesses!’

If it were a Painted Skin Ghost, Lu Bai could just punch it and destroy the human skin.

The Ghostly Creature would have nowhere to hide and would naturally be exposed.

But with Ghost Possession, Luo Ben could still be saved, so Lu Bai couldn’t afford to use lethal force.

As these thoughts raced through Lu Bai’s mind, Luo Ben’s sleeve twitched. A dagger appeared in his palm, and with a flash of cold light, he thrust it toward Lu Bai’s chest!

The stab was sudden, but Lu Bai was already on guard.

The moment Luo Ben moved, Lu Bai shot out a hand and clamped down on his wrist, squeezing with his five fingers to try and knock the dagger away.

Ordinarily, the pain from Lu Bai’s grip would have forced Luo Ben to let go, causing the dagger to fall.

But at this moment, Luo Ben seemed to feel no pain.

The turbid whites of his eyes suddenly took over his entire eye sockets, and veins bulged on his face.

Luo Ben gasped for air, his expression savage in the darkness. With bulging, terrifying eyes, he unleashed a burst of power far exceeding his own Cultivation!
