The Mirror Master

Chapter 86: Morning Bell Ringer

"Haunted again?"

The expressions of the Luo Family members changed.

This time, it even happened in their own home!

Luo Hongyuan’s face darkened. "The Sun Family just won’t leave us alone!" he said coldly. "They’ll stop at nothing for that Profound Iron Ore mine!"

Luo Yunxuan said, "The Sun Family must know the city’s Evil Exterminator Guards are away. That’s why they dare to be so brazen."

Luo Mingzhao nodded. "It’s likely because Lu Bai beat up Sun Bohan during the day. That’s why the Sun Family is resorting to such insidious and vicious methods to get revenge on him."

"What about the evil spirit? Xiaolu, are you alright?"

Luo Qing asked.

Lu Bai replied, "The evil spirit has been dealt with. I’m fine."

Luo Tianxiong’s face was grim. After a moment of contemplation, he suddenly said, "The Evil Exterminator Guards may be gone, but the County Government Office is still here. I’ll go to the County Government Mansion myself tomorrow to report this!

"Even if there’s no solid proof, the Sun Family is the prime suspect. The Government Office can’t just turn a blind eye."

The other members of the Luo Family nodded in agreement.

The incident left everyone with a lingering fear.

If Lu Bai hadn’t noticed and had been killed by the possessed Luo Ben, the consequences would have been unimaginable.

After killing Lu Bai, would Luo Ben have gone after others?

Caught off guard, not to mention an ordinary Martial Artist, even an Innate Martial Artist would likely have been killed.

By the next day, news of Luo Ben going mad and slaughtering his own family would have probably spread throughout the entire city.

"I’m going to go take a look."

Lu Bai picked up the Desolate Emperor Coin he had flicked, tucked it away, and had Black Dog stay put. He then left the Luo Family estate under the cover of darkness, speeding toward the Sun Family’s residence.

The Sun Family was a prominent household in Bluestone City. They owned vast tracts of fertile land and also dealt in common goods like grain and cloth.

Guards stood watch at the gate, and more patrolled the courtyard within.

Lu Bai avoided the main entrance and circled the Sun Family’s estate. He observed with his Eye of Illusion but saw no signs of Ghost Qi.

The Sun estate was large and deep. It was possible the one practicing Ghost Cultivation was hidden deep inside, too far for the Eye of Illusion to detect.

After all, the Sun Family had an Innate Martial Artist watching over them and numerous Guards. It wouldn’t be as easy to sneak into as the Zhou Family’s home in Liuxi Town.

Lu Bai didn’t act rashly. He paused for a moment before his figure melted into the night.

The Luo Family Estate.

Luo Mingzhao held Luo Ben, his fingertips pressing several acupoints on his body in succession.

Then, he placed his palm against Luo Ben’s back and slowly channeled a thread of Innate True Qi into him, doing his best to dispel the cold, sinister energy within his body.

"AARGH!"

A moment later, Luo Ben suddenly cried out, spat a mouthful of Black Blood, and slowly regained consciousness.

"Dad, Sis, you’re... Why am I here?"

Luo Ben looked around, bewildered, still not fully awake.

"Xiaoben, do you remember what just happened? How did you get possessed by an evil spirit?"

Luo Mingzhao asked in a low voice.

"I don’t know."

Luo Ben shook his head blankly. He took a moment to recover before recalling, "I went out to relieve myself in the night. Right after I finished, I saw a figure flash past.

"I thought a thief had gotten into the house, so I quickly chased after them.

"Then, I saw a woman in white with disheveled hair. She noticed me and whipped her head around..."

At this, Luo Ben suddenly paused, a mix of suspicion, fear, and confusion flashing in his eyes.

"What is it?"

Luo Mingzhao pressed.

Luo Ben swallowed before saying, "Dad, the woman in white... her long hair covered half her face, but she looked like... she looked like Little Aunt."

Hearing this, the other Luo Family members frowned deeply.

"Don’t talk nonsense."

Luo Mingzhao scolded. "Your little aunt passed away ten years ago."

Luo Ben couldn’t help but ask, "Dad, how did Little Aunt die?"

Luo Mingzhao and the others secretly shook their heads, remaining silent.

"Sigh."

Upon hearing this, Luo Tianxiong seemed to age several years in an instant. After a long while, he heaved a deep sigh. "Yu’er was stubborn. She couldn’t let go of many things. She was melancholic for those two years, and in the end... she chose to hang herself.

"Lord Dou knew he was at fault, so he still had her buried with the status of a proper wife. He hired some Monks and Daoists to perform rites for her soul. It was a grand affair, you could call it a lavish burial."

Luo Qing and her brother exchanged a look.

Ten years ago, they were still young.

But every time their little aunt came home, she would bring them lots of tasty treats and play with them.

Later, when they heard their little aunt had passed away, they were sad for a long time.

Their father never told them the details of her death, worried it would frighten them.

Only today did the three siblings learn that their little aunt had died by hanging herself.

"Xiaoben, you saw that woman in white. What happened after?"

Luo Mingzhao asked again.

Luo Ben thought for a moment. "Later... L- The woman in white walked toward me, and after that, I lost consciousness until I woke up just now.

"Dad, what just happened?"

Luo Mingzhao briefly explained what had occurred, then helped Luo Ben up and told him to rest well at home for the next few days.

After this incident, no one in the Luo Family dared to sleep.

They lit torches all around the estate and waited for dawn to report the matter to the Government Office.

-----------------

Jingzhou Prefecture, Evil Extermination Bureau.

He Liangzhi dozed off for a bit, then woke with a start and glanced at the sky outside the door.

He then turned to look at a woman not far away, who was hunched over her desk writing annotations.

Mo Tang, the new Morning Bell Ringer of the Jing State Evil Extermination Bureau, who had only recently been appointed.

The woman’s eyebrows were sharp as swords and she had a fine, straight nose. Her jet-black hair was tied in a flawless coiffure, held in place by a blood-red jade hairpin in her Crown, which was particularly striking. It made her snow-white skin seem as pure as jade.

The candle flame beside her flickered, growing smaller and smaller, nearly burnt out.

Another night had passed.

He Liangzhi shook his head and yawned, thinking to himself, ’This new Morning Bell Ringer is a bit too diligent, always staying up late, hunched over her desk, poring over case files.’

The Morning Bell Ringer of the Evil Extermination Bureau commands the Evil Exterminator Guards of an entire state, and their Cultivation must be at the Golden Core Realm.

"Lord Envoy, the Hour of the Tiger is almost over. Why don’t you take a rest?"

He Liangzhi stood up, walked to her desk, and reminded her in a low voice.

Mo Tang glanced at He Liangzhi and said, "It’s no matter. We at the Evil Extermination Bureau are used to working at night."

After a brief pause, Mo Tang suddenly asked, "Have you seen the case file sent from Liuxi Town?"

"I have. A member of the Witch Race was exposed."

He Liangzhi replied, "From the description in the file, this Witch has already been executed. Is there a problem?"

"A big one."

Mo Tang said pensively, "According to the report, a lot happened in Liuxi Town during that period. Two branches of the Lu Family were nearly wiped out, and Carpenter Zhang’s family was burned to death. The file says it was all done by Madam Zhou.

"But before this, no news of these incidents in Liuxi Town ever reached us."

He Liangzhi said, "This Witch was very clever. She knew that towns and villages don’t have branches of the Evil Extermination Bureau, so she chose to hide in a small town.

"As for why there were no reports, her methods were likely subtle. The ordinary constables at the Government Office couldn’t recognize them and never noticed anything was amiss."

"That’s precisely the problem."

Mo Tang said, "This Witch was so well-hidden, so why was she suddenly exposed? Furthermore, the report is vague about her death. It says she was decapitated, but it doesn’t clarify who killed her.

"The file describes her as being skilled in the art of effigy sorcery and having raised a Little Ghost. Even a Daoist at the Seventh-Layer Qi Refining Stage died.

"Given the abilities she displayed, if she had truly decided to go on a killing spree, no one in all of Liuxi Town could have stopped her. So who could have killed her?"
