The Mirror Master

Chapter 88: Mortal Spirit Root

Lu Bai made his routine visit to the Old Gambling Ghost, found a White Emperor Coin, and headed straight home.

The Sun Family was in prison, but he still couldn’t quite rest easy.

The night passed peacefully.

Nothing demonic or strange occurred.

For the next while, Lu Bai cultivated the Dragon Elephant Suppression Skill at home during the day and made a nightly visit to the Old Gambling Ghost.

A Cyan Emperor Coin, a Black Emperor Coin, a Red Emperor Coin... He made a new find every day.

At first, the Old Gambling Ghost would grumble a few words at Lu Bai, clearly displeased.

Later, he seemed to have just given up.

"You’re here?"

"I’m here."

They exchanged the usual greeting every day.

Lu Bai would sift through the pile, find an ancient coin, then casually pick out a few more Copper Coins to make a total of ten before handing over the silver. The whole process was quick and clean.

Word of this gradually spread throughout the Underground Bazaar.

"The Black Hand Young Hero likes to collect Five Emperors Coins."

"More money than sense! Get here fast!"

For a few days, there was a noticeable increase in the number of stalls at the Underground Bazaar.

However, Lu Bai continued to patronize only the Old Gambling Ghost’s stall.

Many curious passersby jumped on the bandwagon and bought from him too, making the Old Gambling Ghost’s business much better than usual.

However, after people took their purchases home and had them appraised, they all started cursing.

"You can’t believe a single word that damn gambler says!"

"What a piece of junk! That so-called World-Purifying Immortal Gourd... I accidentally dropped it at home, and it cracked a hole right through."

"Ugh, don’t even get me started. He scammed me hard, too. I bought a hundred Copper Coins in one go, and they were all from last month! As long as I live, I’ll be an enemy of that gambling dog!"

After another batch of people got scammed, the Old Gambling Ghost’s reputation only worsened.

Only Lu Bai kept up his daily visits.

After half a month, Lu Bai had collected over twenty Five Emperors Coins and one Desolate Emperor Mother Coin.

During this time, his Cultivation had also progressed, and he had opened another acupoint.

He had now reached the Six Acupoints of Inner Strength.

At this rate of Cultivation, he would be able to open all Seven Acupoints in less than a month!

Ever since the Sun Family’s imprisonment, the Luo Family had been safe and sound, with no further strange occurrences.

Lu Bai gradually began to relax.

’Perhaps my earlier worries were just me being paranoid.’

After half a month of rest, Luo Ben had recovered significantly.

Fortunately, his Martial Arts Innate Talent was decent, and being young and strong, he managed to bounce back from the Great Ghost Possession in just half a month.

However, he still looked a bit pale.

That evening, just as night began to fall, Lu Bai was preparing for his routine visit to the Old Gambling Ghost.

Just before heading out, he happened to see Luo Xiao accompanying Luo Ben, who was outside stretching his limbs.

"Brother Xiaolu, heading to the Underground Bazaar again?"

Luo Xiao called out a greeting.

"Yeah."

Lu Bai nodded.

Luo Ben said, "Brother Xiaolu, I’d like to go check it out too. I haven’t left the house in over ten days, so it would be nice to get some fresh air."

Lu Bai asked, "You haven’t fully recovered yet, have you? Would Third Uncle Luo even let you go out?"

Luo Xiao smiled. "If Brother Xiaolu takes him, Dad and the others won’t say a word."

A consensus had gradually formed within the Luo Family: although Lu Bai was only in the Inner Strength Realm, being by his side was undoubtedly the safest place to be.

"Let’s go. We’ll just make a quick stop and head right back."

It was no bother to Lu Bai, since he was just making his routine stop at the Old Gambling Ghost’s stall.

The three of them soon arrived in front of the Old Gambling Ghost’s stall.

"You’re here?"

"I’m here."

The conversation ended.

Lu Bai began selecting his ancient coins.

Having heard that Lu Bai was a regular at this stall, the two brothers, Luo Ben and Luo Xiao, curiously sifted through the items on display.

Before long, Lu Bai had selected ten Copper Coins, tucked them into his robes, and handed over ten taels of silver.

The Old Gambling Ghost took the money, packed up his stall, turned, and entered the gambling den.

Lu Bai said, "Alright, let’s head back."

"That’s it? So soon?"

Luo Ben and Luo Xiao hadn’t had their fill of browsing and wanted to look around more.

Just then, the Old Gambling Ghost came out of the gambling den.

The moment he stepped out the door, a heavy rain began to fall.

The downpour was sudden, accompanied by fierce gusts of wind.

Fat raindrops hammered the street, splashing in all directions and kicking up a fine mist.

Lu Bai and the others ran to a nearby oilcloth awning jutting out from a building to take temporary shelter from the rain.

There were only two places on this street to take shelter from the rain.

One was the Drunken Flower Tower, a brothel.

The other was the gambling den next to it.

One was vice, the other was gambling.

Neither place was as appealing as the oilcloth awning on the street.

At least the awning was quiet.

It also kept Luo Ben and Luo Xiao from picking up any bad habits.

Martial Artists had robust physiques, so they weren’t afraid of a little rain.

But the downpour was so heavy that returning soaked to the bone like a drowned rat would be a sorry sight.

Besides, Luo Ben hadn’t fully recovered yet, so there was no need to rush.

"Just my luck!"

The Old Gambling Ghost, trapped at the entrance of the gambling den by the downpour, could only mutter to himself and huddle against the base of the wall for cover.

Watching the downpour outside, Lu Bai and the two brothers chatted idly.

"Oh, right."

Luo Xiao seemed to recall something. "Brother Xiaolu, that brother and sister, Chen Xiaofeng and Chen Qianqian, they’re from the same place as you, right? From Liuxi Town."

"What about them?"

Lu Bai asked.

Luo Xiao said, "That Chen Xiaofeng hasn’t been to the academy in days, and a few days ago, Chen Qianqian withdrew and left as well."

"Oh."

Lu Bai responded noncommittally.

He wasn’t concerned about the siblings.

Just then, through the hazy mist and rain, a woman in purple robes, wearing a veiled conical hat, came stumbling over from the end of the street.

The purple-robed woman glanced around before scurrying over to the awning where Lu Bai and the others were taking shelter, panting slightly.

The woman was soaked to the skin. Her wet clothes clung tightly to her body, outlining a perfect, curvy silhouette, her undergarments faintly visible beneath.

Sensing the three men’s gazes, the purple-robed woman grew flustered and quickly removed her conical hat, holding it in front of her to cover her chest.

With the veil gone, a beautiful and enchanting face was revealed. Her limpid eyes held a trace of panic mixed with a hint of reproach.

Rainwater trickled from the ends of her disheveled, dripping hair, down her long, fair neck. The conical hat in her hands did little to hide her graceful and alluring figure.

Lu Bai looked away.

After a glance at the woman, Luo Ben and Luo Xiao also turned away.

Seeing that the three men were no longer looking at her, the purple-robed woman seemed to relax considerably.

Only the Old Gambling Ghost, standing not far off, stared wide-eyed, his gaze shamelessly roaming over her body as he occasionally made strange "TSK TSK" sounds.

After a moment, the woman shivered, hugging her arms tightly as her body trembled slightly.

"It’s so cold."

The purple-robed woman’s voice trembled as she exhaled softly.

Luo Ben glanced at her out of the corner of his eye and said, "How come I’m not cold?"

The purple-robed woman’s lips were pale from the cold. She forced a smile and said, "Young Master, your Blood Qi is vigorous, and you have clearly cultivated the Martial Dao. A weak woman like myself naturally can’t compare."

Luo Xiao said, "If you’re so frail, why didn’t you wear more clothes?"

At the mention of this, Luo Ben wrapped his outer coat more tightly around himself and said rather proudly, "Exactly. See? I’m wearing two layers."

The Old Gambling Ghost shook his head in pity. ’What a pair of oafs. Thick as a wooden fish, with absolutely no sense of romance!’

Seeing that the two brothers, Luo Ben and Luo Xiao, were truly clueless, the purple-robed woman couldn’t help but turn to Lu Bai and say softly, "Young Master Lu, could I borrow your outer coat for a moment? To cover..."

"You know who I am?"

Lu Bai asked abruptly.

The purple-robed woman smiled. "Young Master Lu, is there anyone in Bluestone City who doesn’t know of your heroic fame?"

"Oh."

Lu Bai replied noncommittally.

’This woman appeared rather suddenly.’

When she had first approached, Lu Bai had already used his Eye of Illusion to observe her carefully.

He hadn’t seen anything amiss, so he had paid her no further mind.

Seeing that Lu Bai also remained unmoved, the purple-robed woman couldn’t help but furrow her delicate brows. Looking utterly pitiful, she said weakly, "Young Master Lu, I’m a little cold."

Lu Bai replied, "Don’t be cold."

The purple-robed woman: "..."

The heavy rain had come suddenly, and it left just as quickly.

Seeing that the rain had lightened, Lu Bai gestured to Luo Ben and Luo Xiao, and they quickly departed.

The Old Gambling Ghost watched Lu Bai’s retreating figure and murmured softly, "How rare, how rare..."

Then he clicked his tongue and shook his head. "A pity, a pity... It’s just a Mortal Spirit Root."
