The Mirror Master

Chapter 91: Divine Chicken Breaks the Dawn

Obtaining four wisps of Soul Light had been so easy.

Yet, a heaviness settled in Lu Bai’s heart.

After pausing for a moment, Lu Bai left the room, moved the villagers’ bodies to one spot, and set them ablaze.

It was all he could do.

The roaring flames drove away the darkness.

Out of the corner of his eye, Lu Bai caught sight of a Big Rooster with a red crest and a golden beak slowly approaching from the other side of the village.

When the rooster saw Lu Bai, it froze abruptly, standing stock-still like a block of wood. It cocked its head, blinking its eyes.

’Dumb as a wooden chicken.’

The four words flashed through Lu Bai’s mind, and he shook his head.

Even the horse he had ridden could sense the danger here, yet this rooster just looked dazed.

It must have been out of the village when the Tiger Demon came down the mountain, luckily sparing its life.

But now it had foolishly run back, completely unaware of what had happened.

"Go on, get out of here."

Lu Bai waved his hand and said, "The Tiger Demon killed all your masters. From now on, you’ll have to find your own food. And whatever you do, don’t go into the mountains."

Hearing Lu Bai’s words, the rooster remained rooted to the spot, still looking dazed.

Lu Bai shook his head and paid it no more mind.

’This kind of poultry has no intelligence. It can’t understand me.’

Now that it no longer had a master to feed it, it probably wouldn’t survive long in these desolate mountains before ending up in the belly of some other beast.

Lu Bai left the village. He glanced at the majestic mountain looming in the darkness ahead, took a deep breath, and entered the forest.

He had yet to encounter the Chang Ghost raised by that Tiger Demon.

He didn’t stand much of a chance against a Tier Two Tiger Demon.

But Chang Ghosts often separated from their Tiger Demons in order to lure in the living.

If he could run into a Chang Ghost in the mountains, he could seal it in the Ancient Mirror.

Lu Bai moved slowly and silently through the forest, his senses on high alert. He would occasionally activate his Eye of Illusion to scan his surroundings.

He didn’t encounter any other wild animals along the way.

No other beast would dare trespass into the territory of a Tier Two Demon Beast.

He wandered aimlessly around Zhongming Mountain like this for most of the night, but he didn’t run into a single Chang Ghost.

If he still hadn’t found a Chang Ghost by dawn, Lu Bai planned to return to the city.

After all, this was the territory of a Tier Two Demon Beast; it was simply too dangerous.

If he ran into the Tiger Demon before finding a Chang Ghost, his chances of survival would be slim.

"ROAR!"

Just then, the roar of a fierce tiger suddenly echoed from the distant forest!

The Tiger Demon had appeared!

Because he cultivated the White Tiger Stance, Lu Bai felt no fear at the sound of the tiger’s roar.

In fact, to his ears, the roar wasn’t even as stunning as his Silence Shocking Secret Technique.

’Strange.’

A look of confusion crossed Lu Bai’s face.

In that roar just now, he had faintly detected a hint of agitation and rage.

After a moment’s thought, Lu Bai ran toward the source of the roar.

"ROAR!"

After running for a while, the tiger’s roar sounded again.

It was clearly much closer this time.

And this roar was even more frantic and furious.

’Is this Tiger Demon in trouble?’

The thought flashed through Lu Bai’s mind as he jogged forward.

As he got closer, he could see surging Demon Qi ahead through the trees. Flashes of crimson-gold light erupted from time to time, brilliant and dazzling. It looked like someone was fighting the Tiger Demon.

Lu Bai’s spirits lifted, and he crept a little closer.

When he was near enough to see the scene clearly, Lu Bai froze on the spot, utterly dumbfounded.

The Tiger Demon was a full size larger than an ordinary tiger.

Its head was enormous, its fangs exposed and glinting coldly. It dodged and weaved in a clearing in front of a cave, panting heavily and letting out a series of low growls.

At the mouth of the cave lay a pile of more than ten corpses dressed in standard-issue armor, with weapons scattered around them.

Judging by their attire, this group of dead men had to be the Demon Slayer Guards who had fallen to the Tiger Demon.

But that wasn’t the most shocking part.

What truly stunned Lu Bai was the Tiger Demon’s opponent.

It wasn’t a person at all.

It was a Big Rooster!

Moreover, this Big Rooster looked very familiar—it seemed to be the same dazed chicken he had just seen in Niu Family Village.

The Big Rooster was barely larger than the Tiger Demon’s paw.

Yet it was able to hold its own against the Tier Two Tiger Demon, not at all at a disadvantage.

The Tiger Demon was clearly wary of the Big Rooster’s talons and golden beak.

Furthermore, the Big Rooster’s attacks were exceptionally vicious. Its talons and golden beak were aimed exclusively at the Tiger Demon’s eyes.

Lu Bai had heard that roosters were aggressive fighters, but he never expected one to be able to go toe-to-toe with a Tier Two Tiger Demon.

’What a fierce rooster. It must have also cultivated the Dao and gained sentience.’

Lu Bai clicked his tongue in amazement.

’It’s truly not easy for a rooster to achieve such a level of cultivation.’

This was no dazed chicken.

This was a majestic and vigorous Divine Chicken!

After observing for a while, Lu Bai gradually noticed something strange.

The Divine Chicken clearly had the upper hand.

Beating its wings, it couldn’t fly very high, but it constantly stayed above the Tiger Demon’s head.

Its attacks were ferocious, completely overwhelming the Tier Two Tiger Demon!

But every time the Divine Chicken was about to land a decisive blow, it would suddenly dodge, as if wary of something beside it.

This evasive maneuver gave the Tiger Demon a chance to catch its breath.

The Divine Chicken could only renew its assault.

Knowing something was amiss, Lu Bai immediately focused and activated his Eye of Illusion.

"Hm?"

Lu Bai’s gaze flickered.

Near the Divine Chicken, a strange and extremely ugly evil spirit had materialized.

It was dark and scrawny like a monkey, with fuzzy green fur growing below its neck and a hideous face.

It had only one foot, and its heel pointed forward while its toes pointed backward.

Despite having a single, reversed foot, it could leap incredibly high.

Every time it saw the Tiger Demon in danger, this one-legged evil spirit would suddenly strike, clawing at the Divine Chicken’s wings.

The Divine Chicken had no choice but to dodge first.

It looked like a one-on-one fight between the Divine Chicken and the Tiger Demon, but in reality, the Divine Chicken was fighting two against one!

Lu Bai thought to himself, ’It seems that team of Demon Slayer Guards who fell to the Tiger Demon was killed by this one-legged evil spirit and the Tiger Demon working together.’

This one-legged evil spirit had no Ghost Fire, and even its Ghost Qi was very faint.

Lu Bai couldn’t quite gauge the level of this one-legged evil spirit.

But if he could suppress this evil spirit, the Tiger Demon wouldn’t last much longer.

Just then, the Tiger Demon suddenly sneezed, and two more evil spirits shot out from its nostrils. Their bodies were wreathed in Ghost Fire as they swarmed the Divine Chicken.

’Two Little Ghosts!’

This time, Lu Bai was able to identify them instantly by the form of their Ghost Fire.

Just as Lu Bai was about to step forward to help, the Divine Chicken suddenly threw its head back and let out a long cry!

"COCK-A-DOODLE-DOO!"

Listening to the cry, it sounded exactly like a rooster’s crow, with no difference whatsoever.

But as the crow rang out, the crimson crest on the Divine Chicken’s head turned a dripping blood-red, and its vermilion feathers burst forth with a dazzling, dawn-like radiance.

The surrounding night receded like a swift tide.

Above the clearing in front of the cave, a vast expanse of daylight actually appeared!

The forest was still shrouded in darkness, but in the area around the Divine Chicken, its single crow had summoned the light of dawn!

The two Little Ghosts had just charged forward when the crow rocked their Soul Bodies, extinguishing their Ghost Fire in an instant.

The next moment, the light of dawn descended.

Enveloped by this radiance, the two Little Ghosts emitted wisps of green smoke, let out a final, wretched scream each, and their souls scattered into nothingness.

’Truly divine valor!’

Lu Bai couldn’t help but exclaim in admiration, but a moment later, a pang of regret hit him.

What a waste.

He had just watched two sources of Level 1 Soul Light get obliterated by the Divine Chicken’s single crow.
