Lu Bai observed from the sidelines without making a rash move.
After all, there was a difference of a full realm between them. He was also far too lacking in Martial Techniques; his Swordsmanship and combat skills were all just Basic Skills.
The Cyan Cloud Sword was a decent weapon, but it couldn’t even be considered a Tier One Treasure Artifact.
A Tier Two Tiger Demon’s sharp claws and fangs were on par with Tier Two Treasure Artifacts.
The Divine Chicken clearly had the upper hand. If he rushed in, he’d likely be more of a hindrance than a help.
Lu Bai suddenly held up the One-legged Monster he was carrying and shouted, "Hey, Tiger Demon! Your accomplice is dead!"
The Tiger Demon caught the sight from the corner of its eye, and its body jolted in shock.
In that split second of distraction, the Divine Chicken saw its opening. It drove a claw into the Tiger Demon’s eye and ripped the eyeball clean out!
"AOOOW!"
The Tiger Demon roared in agony. Blood gushed from its empty socket as it lunged at the Divine Chicken in a frenzy.
The Divine Chicken had anticipated the Tiger Demon’s desperate counterattack. With a few flaps of its wings, it flew higher, tossed the demon’s eyeball into the air, and swallowed it whole.
Although it was a Tier Two Demon Beast, the Tiger Demon was unable to fly and couldn’t reach the Divine Chicken.
Wounded, the Tiger Demon roared and tried to plunge into the nearby jungle.
The Divine Chicken dove down again, its talons slashing at the Tiger Demon’s face as its golden beak pecked ferociously.
At full strength, the Tiger Demon was no match for the Divine Chicken.
Blind in one eye and its Primordial Energy severely depleted, the Tiger Demon was now even more helpless.
Within just a few exchanges, the Divine Chicken gouged out its other eye.
The Tiger Demon shrieked incessantly, its face a mask of blood. It blundered about like a headless chicken, crashing through thick, ancient trees and leaving a trail of devastation.
Finally, it slammed headfirst into the mountainside, splitting its skull and covering its body in wounds.
The Divine Chicken stood a short distance away, its head cocked as it watched the wounded Tiger Demon. It made no move to approach, its gaze cold and indifferent as it silently observed the demon’s frantic struggles.
Lu Bai looked closely and saw that each of the Divine Chicken’s eyes had two pupils!
After the Tiger Demon had thrashed about for some time, its strength gradually faded.
The Divine Chicken then puffed out its chest, leaped lightly onto the Tiger Demon’s neck, and struck once with its golden beak.
CRACK!
A crisp cracking sound rang out.
A bloody hole was instantly punched through the Tiger Demon’s skull.
The Tiger Demon’s body swayed. With a heavy THUD, it collapsed weakly to the ground, lifeless. Its enormous frame kicked up a cloud of dust.
Lu Bai’s expression shifted. His gaze flickered as he looked at the pile of corpses beside the cave.
Just as the Tiger Demon died, he thought he heard a faint breath from within the pile of corpses, but it quickly vanished.
He had only opened the aperture of one of his ears, so he couldn’t be entirely sure.
The Divine Chicken stood on the tiger’s head and pecked a few more times into the bloody hole. Then, it opened its golden beak, tilted its head back slightly, and a viscous, white fluid began to well up from the wound.
It formed a thin stream that flowed into the Divine Chicken’s mouth.
Lu Bai clicked his tongue in amazement.
This Divine Chicken sure knew how to eat, cracking open the skull to dine on the Tiger Demon’s brains.
In just a few moments, the Divine Chicken had consumed the entirety of the tiger’s brain.
The Divine Chicken ruffled its feathers. The crimson-gold tail it had manifested moments ago vanished, and with a flick of its eyelids, its Heavy Pupils were hidden from view.
In the blink of an eye, it had reverted to a perfectly ordinary-looking Big Rooster. With a dopey expression, it hopped down from the tiger’s head.
It then began to strut directly toward Lu Bai.
’This Divine Chicken isn’t going to crack my skull open, is it...’
The thought flashed through Lu Bai’s mind, and he tensed, remaining secretly on guard.
The way the Divine Chicken looked at him was unsettling.
It looked as if it wanted to peck a bloody hole in him.
The Divine Chicken stopped in front of Lu Bai, cocking its head to stare at him.
It circled him once and let out two soft clucks, their meaning unclear.
Then, with a flutter of its wings, the Divine Chicken turned and leaped into the jungle, vanishing from sight.
Lu Bai breathed a sigh of relief and collapsed to the ground. He coughed heavily twice, muttering, "What was that One-legged Monster? It wounded me so badly."
With that said, Lu Bai slowly began circulating his energy to regulate his breath.
Before long, a slight stir came from the pile of corpses by the cave.
Lu Bai opened his eyes to look.
From beneath the pile of corpses, a large hand slowly extended.
Immediately after, several corpses on top rolled aside, and a figure crawled out from beneath. They were covered in blood, their armor in tatters and hair disheveled, looking like a Fierce Ghost.
Lu Bai’s expression turned to panic. He instinctively grabbed the Cyan Cloud Sword beside him and tried to get up, but his legs gave out from weakness, and he fell back into a sitting position.
Seeing this, the man’s eyes flickered for a moment before he spoke suddenly. "There’s no need to be afraid, young man. I am Cui Jiang, a Commander from the Bluestone City Demon-slaying Bureau."
"Ah, Commander Cui, you’re still alive!"
Lu Bai was both shocked and overjoyed. "I am Lu Bai," he said quickly.
"Lu Bai... so it’s you. I’ve heard your name lately, though this is the first time we’ve met. The next generation is truly impressive."
Cui Jiang said with admiration.
Lu Bai pointed to the corpses over there and asked tentatively, "Commander Cui, how did you..."
Cui Jiang explained, "That Tiger Demon was too ferocious, and with an Exotic Beast assisting it, my men were no match. Our casualties were devastating. I only managed to fool its senses by using the Breath-Holding Skill.
If it weren’t for that Divine Chicken and Brother Lu, I would have been devoured by that tiger sooner or later."
"You’re being too serious, Commander Cui."
Lu Bai struggled to rise for a moment but simply didn’t have the strength. He could only offer a wry smile. "Commander Cui, my injuries are too severe for me to offer a proper salute. Please forgive me."
"It’s nothing."
Cui Jiang gave a faint smile and looked around, a look of dazed realization on his face.
This brush with death had truly filled his heart with a flood of emotions.
He never imagined he would have a chance to survive this ordeal.
Although he had used the Breath-Holding Skill to temporarily fool the Tiger Demon’s senses, his injuries were grievous. The Armor he wore had been shattered by the beast’s blows, and his Internal Organs had suffered severe trauma.
Given the rate at which the Tiger Demon was devouring people, it would have been his turn in a few more meals.
He never expected to be snatched from the jaws of death, for his fate to take such a sudden, miraculous turn.
In truth, he had been watching ever since the Divine Chicken appeared to battle the Tiger Demon.
But he hadn’t dared to make the slightest move.
He only breathed a sigh of relief after the dust had settled and the Tiger Demon was dead.
However, Cui Jiang still didn’t rise immediately.
That Tier Two Tiger Demon’s body was a treasure trove. It could be sold for an excellent price—an estimated one hundred Middle Grade Spirit Stones!
And that was just the material gain.
If word got out that he had slain a Tier Two Tiger Demon, his fame would skyrocket.
Faced with fame and fortune, the human heart is difficult to predict.
Cui Jiang couldn’t be sure that this young man wouldn’t resort to desperate measures.
Though the young man’s Cultivation was low—only the Inner Strength Realm—in his own weakened state, Cui Jiang would still find him difficult to handle.
He only lowered his guard after seeing Lu Bai bleeding from his mouth and nose, slumped helplessly on the ground.
Lu Bai was clearly suffering from internal injuries and couldn’t even stand. Even if he wanted to claim the fame and fortune for himself, he was willing but lacked the strength.
Once he was certain there was no danger, Cui Jiang decided to reveal himself and crawled out from the pile of corpses.
But the moment he saw Lu Bai, a thought suddenly surfaced in his mind!
’This Zhongming Mountain is deserted. If I kill this young man, no one will ever know.
’In that case, I can claim the Tiger Demon’s corpse as my own, and no one will be the wiser.
’When word of this gets out, I, Cui Jiang, will make a name for myself throughout Jing State!
’Slaying a Tier Two Tiger Demon, and that invisible one-legged Exotic Beast... this is a monstrous achievement, a path to riches and glory!
’Perhaps with this achievement, I can trade for some rare Demon Beast Inner Cores at the Demon-slaying Bureau. With a top-tier Golden Core Realm Cultivation Technique, I might even have a chance to step onto the Alchemy Dao.
’Then, I could advance another step and become a Demon Slayer Envoy!’
