"What good would it do me to lie to you?" Elise retorted, mimicking Sean’s earlier tone with disdain. "Why don’t you just go look at the door yourself?"
You can’t go in, but you can still look.
"And another thing, don’t call me Xiao Lili anymore."
Elise said, "I’m afraid Mr. Sean will get the wrong idea."
Everyone else: "?"
Meanwhile, inside the bookstore.
Sean had no idea that many eyes were already on him.
The old man led him into a back room, preparing to give him his first lesson.
At first, Sean was quite interested. With the Hall of Truth gone from the world, he was curious to see how much this old Scholar could have deduced on his own. Sean’s own memories were incomplete; it was possible the man had grasped Truth Techniques more profound than what he currently possessed.
But when he saw the test paper the old man produced, Sean suddenly fell silent.
He had previously given Yisha a set of problems.
Those were the simplest entry-level problems from the old Hall of Truth.
The problems the old man now gave him, however, were even simpler than that introductory set.
And they were simpler by more than just a single level.
Their overall difficulty was comparable to the "1+1" on the door.
The room served as the old Scholar’s private office and was usually occupied by him alone, so books and notebooks were piled high on the desk. Sean also happened to spot the subject the old man was currently engrossed in: the *Achilles Paradox*.
This was a type of Magic that could make you forever uncatchable by an enemy.
Within the entire system of the Path of Truth, it was one of the four most difficult Paradoxical Techniques to master.
Its difficulty, however, lay in true mastery, not in its introduction.
Paradoxical Techniques were always simple to begin with; it was just that the more you learned, the less you understood.
And clearly, the old man hadn’t even gotten his foot in the door.
So Sean decided to retract his initial assessment.
’This Mr. Scholar knows a thing or two, but not much more.’
To save time, he decided to just lay his cards on the table.
"How about this, Mr. Scholar? You just..."
"Call me Teacher."
Before he could finish, the old man interrupted him with a frown.
Sean: "..."
The old man: "What is it you wanted to say?"
Sean: "I was going to say, Teacher, you just tested me to see if I’m qualified to be your student. So, how about I give you a test to see if you’re qualified to be my teacher?"
The old man: "?"
’This brat... challenging his master the moment he walks in the door?’
’Excellent. He’s got character.’
’He liked this kind of rebellious, untamable youth.’
’When it came to academics, he’d always been accommodating. Besides, Sean was clearly intelligent enough to have the right to choose his teacher.’
Thus, not only did he not get angry, he actually stood his ground, clasped his hands behind his back, and raised his chin slightly. "Come," he said. "This is a good chance for me to see what you’re really made of."
"But, let me give you a fair warning."
"If your test can’t stump me, then you will take these papers, go home, and copy them ten thousand times—I don’t care how you do it. They’re to be on my desk first thing tomorrow morning."
"And if you fail... Hmph. You’ll face the consequences, and don’t come begging to me then."
"No problem."
Sean agreed instantly.
"Please, Mr. Scholar."
As he spoke, his eyes suddenly turned the purest gold. Countless runes materialized from the air, flowing upward to hover above the old man’s head like a golden ocean before cascading down like a waterfall.
This was knowledge in its purest form. The gap in their Magic Power was so vast that trying to structure it with Magic would have been pointless. Instead, Sean simply poured the problems directly into the old man. The process was similar to constructing a Maze of Truth, only this time, the maze wasn’t in the material realm, but in the old man’s mind.
Having heard the clarity of Sean’s reasoning at the door, the old man had already guessed the boy was self-taught in the Truth Technique and had achieved some minor success. Now, seeing Sean materialize a massive volume of problems from thin air, he was both shocked and delighted. ’This kid really has a few tricks up his sleeve,’ he thought. ’I’ve really found a promising sprout this time.’
To display the poise and power befitting a great master, the old man was true to his word. He completely lowered his Mental Defense, allowing Sean to pour the problems, filled with countless pieces of profound knowledge, into his mind.
At that moment, the old man had no idea just how reckless his actions were.
Until the very next second.
BANG!
All of the golden characters vanished into the old man’s mind.
The old man himself collapsed on the spot.
A satisfied smile spread across his face, just like the one Zajik had worn.
Sean: "?"
