False Heaven.
Sean was still waiting for a message from Elvire.
But he hadn’t received one.
Instead, what arrived was the "good news" brought back by Teacher Tony and the others.
"Hahahahaha!"
"Well? How about it?"
"I told you our Talent wasn’t bad! I’ve already asked around—Mr. Scholar has never taken the initiative to accept any students. We’re the first batch!"
Sean was lying on his bed. Even before Kave and the others had entered the room, he heard Teacher Tony’s booming laughter.
People from the other dorm rooms poked their heads out at the sound, asking suspiciously, "For real?"
"Are you bullshitting?"
"Mr. Scholar would take students on his own initiative?"
Everyone expressed their disbelief.
They looked unfamiliar. ’They must be new, right?’
"Heh." Tony scoffed, lifting his chin, his nose high in the air. "Why would I need to lie to you?"
"Go and ask around for yourselves if you don’t believe me."
This had all happened at the city’s "canteen," an affordable restaurant, where many people had seen it.
At the time, Elise was holding a menu and telling them which dishes were the tastiest when a black cat suddenly shot in through the window. The restaurant had floor-to-ceiling windows, basically glass walls, yet the cat ignored the thick pane, passed right through it like a phantom, and landed on their table, startling everyone.
Elise’s hands trembled in fright, and she almost dropped the menu.
Once the shock subsided, she got a clear look. Wasn’t this the cat from Mr. Scholar’s bookstore?
"Miss White Cat?"
Tony and the others also recognized it, but they didn’t understand the name.
"Isn’t it black? Why call it White Cat?"
And they even called it *Miss* White Cat...
’Are people in the city always this elegant?’
To their surprise, the black cat actually spoke, answering Tony and the others’ question itself—
"Is there some rule that says a black cat can’t be called White Cat?"
"Besides, has it ever occurred to you that I might actually be white, and your eyes are just too poor to see it?"
It was the voice of a young girl, with a distinctly tsundere tone.
Teacher Tony was flabbergasted. "You can actually talk??"
’I can do human things, too,’ Miss White Cat thought. She couldn’t be bothered with small talk with Tony, so she simply shot him a look with her remarkably human-like eyes and continued, "I’m here to deliver a message from Mr. Scholar."
"After careful consideration, Mr. Scholar has decided to make an exception and accept you all."
"Tomorrow at nine in the morning, in the lecture hall on the third floor of the church. Bring the school supplies that you poor students ought to bring, and be there on time for class."
"This will be your first class. Whether there will be a second, a third... or any more after that, will all depend on your performance. I hope you won’t be late."
Having said her piece, Miss White Cat prepared to leap away.
Up close, they could finally see the faint cyan Magic Power glowing around her small paws. She had used Magic to pass through the glass.
’It can not only talk, but it can also use Magic... This cat is something else!’
Tony and the others thought to themselves.
Elise, however, called out to the black cat as it was turning to leave. "Miss White Cat, please wait!" she said, her voice laced with urgency.
"Hm?" Miss White Cat turned her head.
If it had been Tony or the others, she probably wouldn’t have bothered, but she had to acknowledge Elise.
She had seen the young woman many times; they were practically old acquaintances.
Elise asked, both excited and uncertain, "Miss White Cat, when Mr. Scholar said he would make an exception to accept us... does that include me?"
Miss White Cat: "..."
’That old man hadn’t really given me the details on this matter.’
’I don’t know who Laelando actually wants to accept as students, or how many.’
’His exact words were "that group from just now."’
So, Miss White Cat thought for a moment, then nodded. "Yes, you’re included."
—Since the old Scholar hadn’t been specific, she might as well decide based on her mood.
"Yay!" Elise immediately cheered.
After being turned away for so many years, she never thought she would one day have the chance to become a student of Mr. Scholar and study the Truth Technique alongside so many geniuses. It was better than a dream!
"Sister, you’re truly my lucky star!"
With a look of pure bliss, Elise hugged Eleanor’s arm, nuzzling against her chest. This made Eleanor blush, and she pushed her younger sister away, glared at her, and whispered, "This is a public place. Behave yourself."
Perhaps because happiness had come so suddenly, it wasn’t until long after Miss White Cat had left that Tony and the others finally came to their senses.
"I didn’t mishear, did I?" Kave said. "The old Scholar changed his mind?"
Ryan: "But why?"
Back at the bookstore, Laelando hadn’t even given them a pleasant look; he might as well have had the words "a bunch of idiots" written on his face. Why the sudden change of heart? Why was he willing to teach them now?
"Why else could it be? Obviously, it’s because he finally recognized our Talent!" Tony, his face alight with excitement, said—it was hard to tell if he was praising Laelando or himself—"As expected of the great Scholar. He has a keen eye for talent, ignoring any fool and never missing a genius."
Because Miss White Cat was a "famous cat" around town, known to anyone who had been to the bookstore, and because she hadn’t been quiet, there was no need to be secretive about it. As a result, the customers at the neighboring tables had heard their conversation and were now casting them looks of envy, jealousy, and resentment.
Even the waiter who came to take their menu had a look of pure envy.
Elise waved her hand grandly and declared, "Forget all those dishes! Bring this young lady the best you have!"
"Oh, no, don’t swap them. Just cancel those dishes and bring us one of everything else on the menu!"
She was going to celebrate properly. Tonight’s meal was their "acceptance feast"!
"And make an extra portion of the three most expensive dishes to go," Ryan added.
