The Most Arbitrary Wizard

Chapter 334 - 162: Let’s Try It, Then

If there was one thing he hadn’t expected, it was that the people who had just come looking for him were actually Sean and Flame Crow.

Pulente had seen their photos.

One was Siracle State’s most-wanted criminal, the other was on the Florist Family’s list.

A deadly duo, for sure.

Logically, those two should have hated his guts. If he recalled correctly, Sean and Elvire had been among the targets of that last plane explosion. Afterward, he’d even held a press conference and pinned the blame on them. Yet, from what Sean had just said, the kid seemed to possess a strange sense of honor. He had this domineering air about him, like ’this is a private matter for Siracle State, and outsiders have no business interfering,’ and was apparently planning to get revenge on the Wolf Family on his behalf...

Pulente couldn’t guess what Sean was thinking. ’But who cares?’

’It’s a good thing, regardless.’

’It would be best if they fought. The more viciously, the better.’

’No matter who won or lost, I wouldn’t be on the losing end.’

’Now that’s what I call wisdom.’

Pulente gazed at the symbol on the wall, feeling more and more pleased with himself.

’I never thought my spur-of-the-moment plan to fake my death would work out so well.’

"Ah, Pulente, Pulente. To be so sharp at your age... you really do deserve to be Governor."

"Hahaha!"

Pulente burst out laughing.

He pulled the IV needle from his hand, rose from the bed, and headed for the living room to find something to drink.

But this time, it was his smile that froze on his face.

The moment he stepped out of the bedroom, he saw Sean and the three women sitting on the sofa. Some were reading newspapers, others magazines. On the coffee table sat the expensive red wine he’d brought from his car, nearly half of it already gone.

Pulente: "???"

His heart ached as much as it pounded with alarm.

’Didn’t these people leave?’

’I heard their footsteps fading away with my own ears! When did they come back??’

In reality, Sean hadn’t left at all.

The ones who left were dummies he had created with his Puppetry Art.

If Pulente had looked out the window, he would have even seen "them" leaving the hospital.

’Did he really think a little trick like that could fool me?’

’Putting the acting aside, the wolf head crest on the wall alone was enough to reveal everything.’

What Pulente thought was a stroke of genius was actually riddled with holes.

’Who in this day and age kills someone—the Governor, no less—and leaves behind a calling card? Were they really not afraid of starting a war between two states?’

The Church Court wanted stability.

If the Wolf Family dared to pull a stunt like that, a hundred heads wouldn’t be enough to pay the price.

So the family crest couldn’t be real.

Besides, if there had been a real assassination attempt, would the Eleanor Sisters, who had been guarding the hospital the whole time, not have noticed?

It was obvious Pulente was faking his death.

But Sean didn’t want to expose him. He had plenty of time and didn’t mind playing along with the governor.

Pulente deceived him, so he deceived Pulente. In a way, it was just another form of communication.

Sean picked up a wine glass, swirled it gently, and took an elegant sip. "Can we talk now, Mr. Pulente?" he asked.

Pulente: "..."

"Ah!"

He suddenly clutched his chest and collapsed again. His eyes remained wide open, just as they had been on the bed, as if he had died with a grievance. It was as if his earlier self was just a final burst of life, and now he was truly dead.

THUD.

Pulente lay on the floor.

Everyone: "?"

"Are you trying to pull a scam here?" Elise asked, both annoyed and amused. "Get up. Our Master has been waiting for you for a long time. If you keep playing dumb, don’t blame us for getting rough."

Elvire had already lost her patience. Back in the room, if Sean hadn’t spoken so quickly and given her no chance to interject, she would have exposed the cunning old fox on the spot. Now, seeing Pulente try to pull the same trick right in front of them, she couldn’t hold back her anger.

"You old coot, do you think you’re being funny?"

Elvire directly hurled a Fireball Technique at him.

’Aren’t you supposed to be dead?’

’Perfect. I’ll help you cremate the body, scatter the ashes out the window, and let you float off to be with your ’Master’.’

"Whoa!"

Terrified, Pulente leaped to his feet, narrowly dodging the Fireball coming straight for his face.

Flame Crow was a Tier Five Wizard approaching Tier Six. Even if it was just the simplest Magic, taking a direct hit would cost him a layer of skin.

The Fireball slammed into the corner of the wall and exploded with a BOOM, making the entire hospital room hum.

Pulente, who had been thrown aside and was now lying prone, exclaimed in shock, "You actually have Superpowers? You can control fire?!"

Elvire: "?"

"Still pretending?"

"Mr. Governor."

Sean said, amused, "You’re not going to tell us you’re just an ordinary person, are you?"

At first, he really hadn’t known Pulente was a Wizard. Pulente wore too many other labels, so Sean hadn’t even considered it. Otherwise, he wouldn’t have used a sniper rifle against him. But now, not only did he know Pulente was a Wizard, he also knew the old man was incredibly powerful—perhaps even Robert wouldn’t be his match.

"I say, Mr. Governor, can’t you be a little more honest?" Elise retorted. "I saw you use Magic in Romeo Park this afternoon. Stop pretending."

Pulente immediately understood. "So you were the one who blocked that bomb for me?"

Elise tilted her head. "No need to thank me. If you want to thank someone, thank my Master."

Pulente sneered. "Fine, fine, fine."

"Since you all know, let’s stop beating around the bush."

He brushed off his clothes and stood up.

In that instant, Pulente shed all his unnecessary disguises. In their place was an extremely powerful aura.

He stood ramrod straight, and the very air he intentionally released made the Crystal chandelier overhead sway.

Elvire narrowed her eyes. "Tier Six?"

"That’s right."

Pulente looked directly at the young woman. "Miss Flame Crow, is this quite unexpected?"

’Not only am I Tier Six, I’m an expert among Tier Sixes!’

’Throughout all of Siracle State, only Chairman Adelf of the Dawn Council could cross swords with me.’

’Mind you, just cross swords—meaning he could only last a few rounds against me.’

’To put it another way, I might not be able to beat Adelf, but I definitely wouldn’t lose.’

That was the confidence his Truth Technique gave him!

"Everyone, to put it bluntly, even if all of you attacked me at once, you would be no match for me." Pulente had now completely cast aside his title as Governor, speaking to Sean and the others as a Wizard. "I know why you’re here."

"It’s about the plane crash, isn’t it?"

Pulente said meaningfully, "I can tell you in all seriousness, if I had truly wanted to kill you, you wouldn’t be standing here talking to me right now."

Although the explosives strapped to those people were specially made and could injure a Wizard, the quantity was very small.

The only ones that small amount of explosives could kill were themselves.

In other words, it was just a warning.

"I’ve always been a magnanimous person, and I don’t want any conflict with the Dawn Council," Pulente said. "I just want to be a good Governor. If you leave now, I can pretend none of this ever happened."

Sean gave him a strange look, sizing him up from head to toe. "Mr. Governor," he said, "I’m curious. Are you always this confident when you talk to people?"

"Just because you’re Tier Six?"

Pulente: "No. It’s because of something you’ve never even seen before."

’People from the Farm World would never know of a path called the Truth Technique.’

’Nor would they know that the Truth Technique meant being invincible against those of the same Tier.’

Since that girl had already seen it, Pulente dropped the act. He raised his right hand, and a brilliant golden ring appeared. Glyphs flowed within it, suffused with an aura of knowledge.

"If you don’t believe me, you’re welcome to try."

"Miss Flame Crow, how about another Fireball Technique?"

Pulente taunted.

Elvire fell silent.

There was one thing she had to admit.

Once Pulente used the Truth Technique, unless she could find a way to make her Magic Power overwhelm his, she could never defeat him. No matter what Magic she used, he could reflect the spell back at her with a simple ring.

By the same token, if the Eleanor Sisters didn’t use the power of a Grand Mage, they couldn’t beat Pulente either.

So, from that perspective, Pulente was right. The four of them combined couldn’t do a thing to him.

Pulente did indeed have the right to say that.

But there was one thing he didn’t know. The Truth Technique was a magical path that heavily depended on comprehension. With the same amount of Magic Power, the party with less understanding was guaranteed to lose. And when it came to comprehension, who could possibly compare to the creator of the Truth Technique, Carl Black?

What he knew even less was that the legendary Carl Black was standing right in front of him at this very moment.

"If you want a test, you’ll get one."

"Eli, beat him up."

Sean said with a mysterious smile, "I’d like to see if the Governor’s precious ring can even spin in my presence."
