James’s POV

I weighed my words carefully, studying the faces before me. I didn’t know these people, had no idea who or what they were connected to. In my position, playing it safe seemed like the only sensible move.

"Sorry about that," I said, keeping my voice even and measured. "My name is James."

I braced myself, expecting them to press for more - a last name, where I was from, what pack I belonged to. The usual interrogation. But the man just nodded, his expression open and friendly.

"Nice to meet you, James. I’m Bruno, the bouncer from last night. And you’ve met my little sister Trixy."

Trixy huffed as she placed steaming plates of food on the table, her movements sharp with indignation. "Only by two minutes," she argued, her voice tight with the kind of sibling rivalry that spoke of a lifetime of teasing.

Bruno stood, ruffling her hair as he passed - a gesture so casual and affectionate it made something in my chest ache. "Yup, two whole minutes older, and that will never change." He looked over his shoulder at me, grinning. "Come on, mate, grab some grub. We’ll fill you in while we eat."

I stood, making sure the sheet was securely knotted at my waist, acutely aware of my vulnerable state. I made my way to the table, where the domestic scene felt almost surreal after the chaos of the previous night. Trixy brought the last of the food - eggs, bacon, toast - and Bruno was civilized enough to grab plates and utensils. The three of us sat down and began to eat, falling into a surprisingly comfortable silence.

I didn’t realize how hungry I was until my plate was nearly empty, my body crying out for sustenance after last night’s excess. "So," I asked again, setting down my fork, "what happened last night?"

Bruno looked away for a moment, seeming to choose his words carefully, then shrugged. "Not much. The usual drunken, broken-hearted guy stuff. You know, you got wasted, couldn’t answer any of our questions, your phone was dead, so we couldn’t call anyone. On the way home, you threw up on yourself, leading to me having the honors of cleaning you up and Trixy washing your clothes."

I stared at them, the words sinking in slowly. Me, James, Alpha of the Blackwood Pack, so drunk I soiled myself like a teenage pup experiencing his first beer? The absurdity of it hit me like a physical blow, and despite the humiliation, I burst out laughing. The sound felt foreign in my throat - when was the last time I’d laughed like this?

"I’m glad you found it funny, mate," Bruno said dryly, though a smile tugged at the corner of his mouth. "You’re lucky we had an extra room for you to crash in."

I calmed myself, shaking my head as the laughter subsided into something softer, more grateful. It was nice to have a normal experience for a change, to be treated like just another person instead of an Alpha. I took another bite, chewing slowly as I considered my next words. "Sorry for laughing when I should be thanking you for taking care of me in my ridiculous state. Most people would have left me in a dumpster or called the authorities. But why did you help?"

Bruno and Trixy looked at each other, that silent twin communication happening again - a language built from shared DNA and shared experiences. Trixy shrugged, and Bruno continued, his expression growing more serious.

"We felt sorry for you. I’ve seen a lot of men come in with a lot of pain, but yours was different. Deeper somehow. We didn’t want to leave you alone, not in that state."

Trixy jumped in, her voice gentle, "Especially when you started crying for your mate."

I put down my fork, my appetite vanishing as the reason for my dive into the bottle came back to me in a painful rush. The memory crashed over me like a wave - Trishelle’s face, Bradley’s smirk, the betrayal that had shattered everything I thought I knew. Trixy placed her hand on mine, her touch warm and comforting. "It’s okay if you tell us, but you don’t have to. No pressure."

Looking up at these two siblings who had helped me like no one had before - strangers who had shown me more kindness than my own mate - I felt like I could open up. The words came slowly at first, then faster, like a dam breaking. I shared what happened - about Trishelle, about Bradley, about finding them together at the nursing home. I left out the explicit details but didn’t hold back on the pain, the sense of betrayal that had driven me to drown myself in alcohol.

By the time I finished my story, my throat raw with emotion, the table was cleared and fresh coffee sat before us. The simple act of confession had left me feeling hollowed out but somehow lighter.

The twins were speechless at my honesty, their eyes reflecting sympathy and understanding. Both placed their hands on my shoulders in a gesture of comfort. A warm glow spread through my body, unexpected and soothing, and I noticed a faint purple mist leaving them and entering me. My wolf stirred, uncertain, and I wanted to pull away, but Trixy hushed me with a soft sound. "Trust us," she whispered. I allowed myself to relax, feeling my body return to its prime state, all traces of the hangover evaporating like morning dew.

"What... how did you do that?" I asked, not with fear but genuine curiosity and wonder.

Bruno looked at his sister, and she nodded, giving him permission to share their secret. "We’re not normal shifters," he began, his voice taking on a storyteller’s cadence. "Neither are we fae or witches or any one thing. We’re more like a mixture of all species, a blend that shouldn’t exist but does. We come from an ancient line of beings. Many in our tribe believe we’re the originals of all the species we now know."

"Our history says that two gods fell in love," Trixy continued, her eyes distant as if seeing into the past. "Their love was forbidden by the laws of their realm, so they ran away and hid on Earth, choosing mortality over separation. They gave birth, each child being a different species - shifters, fae, witches, vampires. They were caught eventually, and as punishment, they were killed. But their love was so strong, so pure, that every fourth generation, their souls are reborn so they can reunite and give birth to special children who have multiple abilities. It’s said that when they meet, they’ll know instantly, and their original memories will surface."

"Our parents were that couple," Trixy piped in, her voice soft with memory and loss. "They lived in a small kingdom far away from here, hidden from the world by ancient magic. My father came from a long line of guards who protected the royal family. We were happy there, truly happy. But one day the kingdom was attacked by those who feared our kind, and our parents were killed trying to save the king and queen. They had a little daughter, a princess barely old enough to walk, and it would have been our job to protect her when we came of age. But she disappeared during the massacre that night. We don’t know if she survived or if she was captured and killed."

"Our parents always told me to protect my sister with my life," Bruno added, his voice thick with emotion and old guilt. "During the chaos, with fire and screams all around us, I knocked her out and ran away. I’m not proud of it, but keeping her safe was and is my top priority. Everything else comes second."

I looked at the two of them holding hands, their fingers intertwined in mutual support, and wondered how nice it would be if my pup could have a sibling bond as strong as theirs. The thought brought a fresh wave of pain - my child, growing up in a broken home, witnessing their parents’ failed bond. I stood, feeling a bit left out of their moment but knowing it was time I acted bravely like the young Bruno and faced my fears head-on.

"Thank you so much for your help," I said, meaning every word. "But I know it’s time for me to face the music. I should get dressed, so can I have my clothes?"

Bruno went to get them from the laundry room in the basement while I helped Trixy clean up, falling into an easy rhythm with her. I felt like I had found some new allies, perhaps even friends, and hoped we could keep in touch. As I wiped the last dish, there was a sharp knock at the door - urgent, demanding.

Trixy opened it, probably thinking her brother had locked himself out again. The door shoved her so hard she fell backward with a cry of surprise and pain.

I rushed to her side, my protective instincts flaring, but before I could reach her, men in covert gear barged in, weapons trained on the poor girl sprawled on the floor. Without thinking, operating on pure instinct, I crouched protectively over Trixy, my wolf surging to the surface, ready to shift and defend.

Then I saw her standing in the doorway.

Trishelle.

Her eyes filled with tears as she took in the scene - me, half-naked, shielding another woman on the floor. I could see the thoughts racing across her face, the assumptions forming, and my heart sank. How must this look to her? After everything that had happened between us, here I was in another woman’s home, barely clothed, in a position that screamed intimacy.
