Sam POV

A small woman stood with her arms outstretched, and my brain tingled with a memory that eluded me. I wasn’t sure how she’d created that blast of wind, or if she was a friend or foe. A large man followed close behind her, heading straight for the chaos with an unshakable calm that seemed strange given the violence unfolding before us. As the woman with purple hair in a pixie cut stooped down beside the fallen Alphas, recognition finally clicked into place - she was the woman who’d been with James yesterday.

I growled low in my throat, my dislike for Trishelle sharp and immediate, but she was still my intended Luna as long as Bradley remained alive. The purple-haired woman glanced at me and smiled, then placed a gentle hand on my shoulder. A warmth traveled through me at her touch, unexpected and foreign, and I relaxed slightly against my will, my body betraying the tension I wanted to hold onto.

She looked up at the man standing beside me, her expression shifting from calm to urgent. "Stop them," she said, her voice calm but commanding, leaving no room for argument. "They are her mates, and their fighting is hurting her and the pup."

He nodded once and strode into the fray without hesitation. I stared in shock as he picked up both wolves by the scruff of their necks like naughty pups and shook them, his strength making the display look almost effortless. "Enough!" His voice boomed, cutting through the rage that clouded the air. It seemed to penetrate the angry haze surrounding the Alphas, forcing something like clarity into their feral eyes. He turned, holding them easily despite their combined weight and fury. "Sis, what should I do with them?"

My jaw dropped. Sis? I looked between them, searching for some resemblance, but Trishelle’s groan of pain grabbed my attention and shattered every other thought in my head.

"What’s going on?" I demanded, my voice sharper than I intended.

The woman - Trixie, I remembered from her file - gently examined Trishelle, her fingers moving with practiced care over her swollen belly. She stood up quickly, urgency replacing her earlier calm. "Quick, get her to a bed."

I wasted no time lifting Trishelle into my arms, her body trembling against mine, and crossed over the fallen warriors, who looked like they’d merely had the wind knocked out of them. I headed to my room, Trixie close behind, her footsteps quick and light. From the corner of my eye, I could see Lorenzo scurrying toward us, his face etched with worry. I entered the room and laid Trishelle gently on my bed. She was covered in sweat, her skin pale and clammy, and she immediately curled into a ball, her hands cradling her taut belly as if trying to shield the child within from some invisible threat.

Trixie POV

I sat by her side, humming a strange yet calming melody that seemed to ease the pregnant woman’s pain, watching as some of the tension slowly bled from her shoulders. Lorenzo stepped in, his medical bag in hand, but paused at the sight of me, uncertainty flickering across his features. Sam gestured for him to proceed, and that’s what he did, though his eyes lingered on me a moment longer than necessary. He moved to the other side of the bed and began pulling on gloves and grabbing his stethoscope, his movements efficient despite his obvious concern.

His hands moved over her stomach as he checked both mother’s and child’s heartbeats, frowning at their rapid, frantic pace. He moved lower, checking under the sheet she was still wrapped in, his brow furrowed in concentration. There didn’t seem to be any signs of dilation, although I suspected that could change at any moment given how quickly her condition had deteriorated. The doctor looked at Sam, concern evident in his eyes, and something unspoken passed between them.

There was something like a knock, delivered by a booted foot, and the door opened to reveal my brother Bruno, still holding the Alphas, although now they’d shifted back into their human forms, towels wrapped around their hips for modesty’s sake. Both men looked haggard, their chests still heaving from exertion and lingering rage.

When they saw Trishelle on the bed, her groans escaping her, Bradley looked ready for round two, his fists clenching at his sides, but Bruno’s meaty hand tightened on his arm, holding him firmly in place.

"Enough," Bruno said, quieter this time but no less firm. With a final warning squeeze, he let them go.

Lorenzo and I backed up, allowing the two men to kneel on either side of the bed, their faces lined with concern and a hint of fear that neither seemed willing to voice aloud.

"What’s happening?" Bradley asked through clenched teeth, staring daggers at Lorenzo as if it were his fault that his mate was in pain.

"What’s going on?" James echoed, his voice tight with barely controlled panic.

Both men were afraid to touch her, fearful that the slightest movement might send her into more agony, their hands hovering uselessly above her trembling form.

Lorenzo shook his head, his expression grave. "She’s in pain."

Bradley’s jaw clenched even tighter, a muscle jumping visibly beneath his skin. "I can see that. What I want to know is why," he growled at Lorenzo, his patience clearly fraying.

The doctor stepped back, his wolf sensing his Alpha’s frustration and responding with instinctive submission. "I think she might be going into early labor."

"She’s not," I said, my voice soothing, deliberately calm to counter the rising panic in the room. "At least not yet."

Everyone looked at me, waiting. I sighed, knowing the weight of what I was about to reveal. "What she is experiencing is similar to a mated bond being threatened by death."

At the looks of shock that followed, I walked to stand beside my brother, drawing strength from his familiar presence. "We are not your usual shifters," I began, choosing my words carefully. "My brother and I are the survivors of an ancient world hidden within this one. In fact, our people are the true forefathers of all shifters, and our kingdom was ruled by the purest family bloodline. My brother and I are descendants who were called the protectors of this royal lineage, but we were attacked. Betrayed, really. Only we escaped, thanks to our mother’s ability. She opened a portal, and we fled as she stayed behind to fight." My voice caught slightly at the memory, but I pressed on. "We believed that none survived, but now, we’ve found our charge - the only princess born to take the throne. We were sworn to be her protectors since we were children, and now we have found her, our Princess Annalise." I said this last part, nodding at Trishelle, who still lay curled on the bed, oblivious to the revelation unfolding around her.

The men frowned, exchanging glances that suggested they wondered if I was high.

Bruno spoke up, his deep voice steady and certain. "It’s true, whether you believe it or not. We were sworn to protect her with our lives, a blood oath, and given a brand to prove our loyalty, which cannot be broken. How do you think we knew where she was?"

James frowned, still doubtful despite the conviction in Bruno’s tone. "You said that what she’s experiencing is like a mated bond?"

I stepped forward, meeting his gaze directly. "Yes. You see, since she is more powerful than a regular werewolf, she was given two mates instead of one of her kind. With both of you trying to kill each other, it’s like she’s experiencing the near-death of not just one mate, but two. Twice the hurt and twice the pain."

"But that doesn’t make any sense," Bradley said, shaking his head in denial. "Neither of us has mated her. Lorenzo said not to do it as it could cost her her life."

Bradley spoke up again, his voice hardening with possessive determination. "I claimed her as my mate first."

James glared at him, refusing to back down. "Yet it’s my pup that she carries."

I nodded in understanding, hoping to diffuse the tension before it could reignite. "Your doctor was right to keep you, Alpha Bradley, from claiming her, as it would have had dire consequences."

Trishelle moaned again, weaker this time, and everyone’s eyes snapped to her.

"What should we do?" Bradley whispered, his earlier aggression melting into raw vulnerability as he watched her suffer.

"Right now, she needs comfort," I said gently. "But you have to get rid of your blood lust. She needs you both to comfort her. Together. That is the only way her body will calm down and keep her from going into early labor and possibly losing the pup and her life."

Hearing that, the two men looked at each other, something unspoken passing between former enemies. With a sigh, James was the first to agree, quickly followed by Bradley, both of them apparently willing to set aside their rivalry for her sake.

"Great," I said, relief coloring my tone. "I would suggest you gentlemen take a quick wash so the scent of blood doesn’t make her feel worse, and then both of you cuddle with her, offering comfort."

When the men hesitated, clearly not wanting to leave their hurting mate even for a moment, I glanced at Bruno, who took a step forward, his presence enough to convince them. Bradley and James got to their feet and each left, heading toward their respective rooms for a shower, casting worried glances back at Trishelle as they went.

I turned to Sam. "Beta, I know this is your room. Does the Princess have quarters of her own?"

Sam shook his head slightly, still reeling from all the information he’d just absorbed about his Luna. "Yes, she does. Should I take her there?"

I nodded, and Sam picked Trishelle up with surprising gentleness and headed for her room. He linked Bradley to let him know where they were going. As he made the journey a few doors down, he noticed that the place was cleared of shifters and people, an eerie stillness settling over the hallway. He glanced at me, walking by his side, and wondered if I had anything to do with the sudden emptiness.

He laid Trishelle down carefully, and I shooed him from the room, needing privacy to work. I went to the bathroom, bringing back a warm, wet cloth, and began to wipe the sweat from her brow, once again humming the melody - the lullaby from our kingdom, one my mother had taught me long before everything fell apart. I allowed some of my healing power to flow through my fingertips, and soon Trishelle’s brow relaxed, as did her body, the tension finally easing from her frame. I wet the rag again and returned, wiping her arms with tender care.

That’s when Bradley and James returned, freshly washed and visibly anxious, and I frowned at them, assessing their readiness. "I’ve managed to calm her, so the rest is up to the both of you. Keep her calm and comfortable. Let her know that your love for her is stronger than your hatred for each other, and she will return by morning."

With those words, I left the Alphas alone with their mate, hoping desperately that they would find a way to set aside their rivalry long enough to save her.
