"Why? He hadn't even finished his second sentence, and you took his life?"
Tang Shimei didn't dare look at the mess on the ground and instead stared in disbelief at Tang Rao's face, searching for an answer in his eyes.
"The second sentence would have been an insult too, so why get yourself upset."
This was Tang Rao. No matter the situation, he insisted on being himself. If he didn't like something or someone, he'd handle it as he saw fit.
"You're really unreasonable."
Tang Shimei thought Tang Rao wouldn't take Yan Moyi's life just because of her words. Anyone might have thought the same as Tang Shimei, not believing Tang Rao could make such a choice.
But Tang Rao did it; his actions exceeded Tang Shimei's imagination.
"I did what you said, helped you get rid of the person you hated, and you're calling me unreasonable?"
Tang Rao blamed Tang Shimei, while Tang Shimei thought what Tang Rao did was wrong. The two didn't understand each other, pushing back and forth, seemingly forgetting Yan Moyi's existence.
"Your father is waiting for you to apologize. Do you want to spend some time in prison, or do you want to go clear things up with your father now?"
The relationship between Yan Moyi and Tang Shimei was not recognized. Yan Moyi had misunderstood one thing all along; even before his death, he didn't realize that the elder would protect his daughter, not the painstakingly cultivated disciple.
"My father? No, my father won't forgive me. For someone like him, reputation is his life. I've thrown his face to the ground; he won't forgive me. Even if I apologize, it won't do any good."
Tang Shimei got up from the ground. She wanted to run outside while Tang Rao wasn't paying attention, but when she reached the prison door, she realized no one had any intention of stopping her.
"Run! Why aren't you running?"
Tang Rao leisurely looked at her by the door, confused why Tang Shimei suddenly stopped.
"Why aren't you stopping me?"
If she suddenly disappeared, Tang Rao would be the first to be blamed. If the prisoners escaped, her father wouldn't let Tang Rao off.
"Why should I stop you? When your father gave you a chance, you didn't cherish it. When I gave you a chance, you didn't cherish it either. Whose fault is that, mine?"
Out of respect for the elder, Tang Rao spoke more kindly to Tang Shimei. But it seemed that Tang Shimei didn't care if Tang Rao was being lenient. If she wanted to escape, she would just wait for her chance.
"Stop trying to fool me. You brought us back, denied us the antidote, and wouldn't let us live well, but want to see us pushed to the brink. What do you gain from this?"
Tang Shimei didn't understand Tang Rao's motives. Yan Moyi was dead, and the curse he left before dying felt like a needle in her heart, impossible to remove, causing intense pain if ignored.
"The door is right over there. If you want to die, feel free to do so anytime. If you're planning to escape, find a hidden spot, and it's best to leave the Mt. Kind Mother. Otherwise, your father will eventually find you and kill you to discipline his family."
Having said such heavy words, Tang Rao was done, with nothing more to say to Tang Shimei.
It was now up to Tang Shimei to figure things out for herself.
"Why aren't you leaving? If you don't go, your father will be here soon."
Perhaps it was those words that scared Tang Shimei. After Tang Rao finished speaking, she indeed didn't dare move another step. She stood blankly in place, uncertain whether to return to her cell or seek out Tang Rao, asking him to take her to her father and try to secure a future for herself.
For a girl to want to leave Mt. Kind Mother and venture into the world beyond was nothing but a dream, or rather, a fantasy.
Everyone knew that those who left Mt. Kind Mother met a bad end!
"If I don't leave, can you take me to see my father and ask him to give me a way out?"
Tang Shimei thought long and hard, finally asking tearfully the question that worried her the most.
"As a rule, I never do things that don't benefit me. You want me to take you to your father, to find a way out for you, let's talk practically. What's in it for me?"
What benefit could Tang Shimei offer Tang Rao? What she had, Tang Rao didn't lack, and what Tang Rao wanted, Tang Shimei might not be able to give. It was a bit troubling.
"I have nothing left; what can I offer you?"
She didn't know what Tang Rao wanted or what she had that he would find worthwhile.
"Plenty. I want you to be my guide in Mt. Kind Mother, introduce me to its geography and all the stories about it that you know. Can you promise to tell me all of them?"
Just like that?
Tang Shimei thought Tang Rao's request would be strange or difficult but was surprised by such a simple demand.
"Just that?"
"Just that!"
It didn't seem like he was fooling Tang Shimei. Since that was the case, there was no harm in agreeing to Tang Rao's terms.
"I agree with you."
There were no other conditions, so Tang Shimei had to agree. Missing this opportunity would mean missing out completely.
Tang Rao dutifully took Tang Shimei to see the elder. From the moment she entered, her head remained bowed.
For a woman, what could be more shameful than losing her purity?
"You won't speak, and your father won't speak. Are you two going to hold out until dinner time?"
Tang Rao had brought her to this point, and since they wouldn't talk, he had to break the stalemate himself.
"You go first. Your father is really upset with you this time. What will you do in the future, show your father your commitment."
Ah?
Tang Shimei was stunned by the question. She had never considered her own future, and now, being asked by Tang Rao to express her intentions, how could she describe it?
"I... I don't know my future... Father, it is entirely my fault. I truly didn't know my senior would drug my drink. It was my lack of vigilance that ruined my life. I hope Father will see that I'm also a victim and forgive me this time."
Tang Shimei knelt and kowtowed three times to the elder. With such sincerity, it should count for something.
"You're just his only child. She's recognized her mistakes. Give her a chance to change. She truly is a victim—I can vouch for her. You two should discuss this calmly as father and daughter. Let this be over; let the daughter reflect on her wrongdoings, and let the father think about whether he was too strict. After today, start afresh—how about that?"
