"I don't have time to listen to all that crap. Talk. What was things like on the Heavenly Dao's side before you left? Also, I think you should know about the grudge between the Heavenly Dao and the Tang Family, and you might even know the me from before, right?"
Tang Rao had never denied that the Ent meeting Tang Rao and everything that happened afterward was all part of its plan, a decision it had made long, long ago.
Only this time, even knowing full well that what the Ent was brewing was a conspiracy, Tang Rao still decided to let this conspiracy "succeed."
"Yeah, I never planned to hide it from you. I'm telling you the truth now and I'm not worried you'll try to get back at me. All of that is because—we're on the same side!"
Back then the Ent definitely wasn't all relaxed and defenseless around Tang Rao; choosing to fight side by side with Tang Rao had been a move of utter helplessness.
It wasn't until Tang Rao chose to cooperate with the Ent that the Stone hanging in the Ent's heart finally crashed to the ground.
The hatred it had carried for so many years finally saw a glimmer of dawn.
"I was gonna refute you, say I didn't want to be on the same side as you. But the enemy of my enemy is my friend. As a newly-minted friend, shouldn't you give me a full, no-detail-spared report on the Heavenly Dao?"
All that sentimental nonsense was useless. The things Tang Rao actually wanted to hear, the Ent hadn't said a single word of them yet.
"The Heavenly Dao is not someone easy to deal with. Back when I was by his side, I saw countless people try to kill him, but they all failed, every single one. They were all crushed without exception."
The Ent quickly told Tang Rao about the Heavenly Dao it knew. Just listening to those stories was enough to make one's heart pound.
"Weren't you dying to know about the Tang Family, about you, about the story between the Heavenly Dao and you?"
The Ent had finished talking about the Heavenly Dao it knew. To Tang Rao, everything up to now was all bullshit; what came next was the real crux of the matter.
"The Heavenly Dao did make mistakes in the past. Because of that mistake, the entire Tang Family came to see the already lofty Heavenly Dao as their mortal enemy, and you were the sacrificial piece in the feud between the Tang Family and the Heavenly Dao!"
What the Ent was saying wasn't some wild fabrication; anything that came out of its mouth was something it had personally witnessed and personally heard.
"Why was I the sacrifice? Spell it out."
No matter how easygoing a person is, if they hear they've become the sacrificial lamb between their family and the Heavenly Dao, they're going to feel a knot in their heart.
"The Heavenly Dao likes your mom!"
If the Ent wasn't speaking, it said nothing at all, but when it did open its mouth it damn near scared people to death.
Even if the Ent had said something like the Heavenly Dao couldn't stand some arrogant bastard and just didn't like the guy, that sort of excuse would've been easier to accept. But what it actually said—wasn't that just a bit off the charts?
"What the hell are you babbling about? The Heavenly Dao is such an almighty figure, and you're telling me he got hung up on a woman?"
If a man doesn't have even a bit of self-control in front of a woman, how is he supposed to climb to the peak?
"That's where you're wrong. You know what kind of being the Heavenly Dao is; his ability and strength go without saying, everyone's seen that for themselves. It's just that even heroes stumble over beauty. You have no idea how stunningly charming your mother's face was, otherwise you wouldn't be doubting what I said."
The Ent had once benefited from the Heavenly Dao's favor and had seen Tang Rao's mother from far, far away. They say demons don't have feelings; even the Ent felt it wasn't the emotional type. But after seeing Tang Rao's mother, even it couldn't help feeling its heart race, let alone anyone else.
Tang Rao's mom choosing Tang Rao's dad had been a case of one willing to fight and one willing to take the hits; put nicely, it was mutual love. She was beautiful, sure, but she just happened to like Tang Rao's dad. When feelings are in place, what can't be said?
The Heavenly Dao might stand above all, but not every high and mighty figure is someone people will swarm to curry favor with. There's always that small group who don't care what the world thinks and don't fear power pressing down on them, people whose pursuit of Realm is higher than anyone's. Tang Rao's mother was exactly that type.
"Hey, I'm serious. The moment I saw your mom back then, in that instant, I felt like I'd just seen love itself."
Plop!
How would the Ent dare to finish that sentence, unless it didn't want its head anymore!
"My mom can be as pretty as she wants, but she's not for you to look at!"
Tang Rao usually didn't come off as the type to be that protective, so how could he have such deep feelings for a mother he'd never even met?
"I only took a single look, and there was never going to be a second chance. Your enemy is the Heavenly Dao; he's the one who was coveting your mother."
Was there any point in the Ent saying all this? Either way it had already offended Tang Rao. Taking a bit of punishment was only what it deserved.
"So what happened after that? My mom resisted and rejected him, so the Heavenly Dao took revenge on our family, and then made me suffer?"
Tang Rao followed along the Ent's words, letting his mind run through every wild possibility.
"That's basically the gist of it, but it's not quite as bad as you're imagining. He did like your mother and hate the entire Tang Family, but the suffering you went through wasn't the Tang Family's fault."
The Ent was afraid Tang Rao would blame the Tang Family and make everyone miserable, so it figured it was better to make things clear.
"You almost razed the Heavenly Dao's home to the ground and even seriously injured the Heavenly Dao. The fact that he didn't take your life and only banished you down below to suffer and start over was entirely for your mother's sake. Back then, I was actually moved by how filial you were."
Was there any use in the Ent saying all that? Saying more was worse than doing more. If it had, say, tried to move him with emotion and reason and helped Tang Rao make some good karma back then, he might not have had to go in such a huge circle and suffer that much.
"Hey, I know what you're thinking. With just me, one little Ent, what exactly do you expect me to do?"
If the Ent had really dared to make a move, it would've been nothing more than a mantis trying to stop a chariot, totally overestimating itself.
"What did my mom do wrong? All she did was not like the Heavenly Dao. Could we not have talked it out? Was that really impossible? Did it have to come down to slaughter, making me suffer through Reincarnation? Doing this—doesn't his conscience hurt?"
No, he shouldn't have said "you" two; he should have said the Heavenly Dao. This had nothing to do with the Ent. It was all the Heavenly Dao's design.
"Go say that to the Heavenly Dao. But the Heavenly Dao is moody and unreadable, never shows his joy or anger on his face, and his strength is unfathomable. You'd better think it through before you make a move!"
The reason the Heavenly Dao could become the Heavenly Dao was certainly inseparable from his strength. Tang Rao of course knew how terrifying the Heavenly Dao was, and he also knew that without absolute certainty, he absolutely couldn't act rashly. But taking action was only a matter of time—sooner or later, he was going to do it.
