LEO

I clung to my turtle rock. I remembered the sea I went to with Mom and Dad. Everything was so blue as if the sea and the sky were the same color.

But now, here, everything was dark. The sky was beautiful until just a moment ago.

What was happening? Rain was coming? Maybe even a storm?

I didn’t know.

I clung to my turtle rock.

I didn’t want to leave.

All I could think was that Mario was an idiot. A meanie. I remembered he told Briant that he wanted to make friends. And I thought we were becoming friends. Mario, you liar.

Dimitri was nice, but he just listened to Mario all the time. He treated me like a child. I liked Dimitri. But he was trying to force me away from here. I didn’t like it.

Isabelle, I thought she was kind. She told me about the witches. She was Thomas’s friend. Thomas was fun. But he wasn’t here.

Mario wasn’t fun. He talked harshly. He yelled. I looked up. The trees were growing, bending. I felt like they were going to collapse on me. Something was wrong. Something was seriously wrong. I was scared.

Then I saw Beatrice. She looked calm. Too calm. I couldn’t tell what she was thinking about. She just looked around as if she was looking for a book in a library. She was scary. I clung to the turtle—

But they were right.

This rock didn’t feel right anymore.

I had to admit. It looked like a dragon now. A scary dragon. Maybe it was the lighting. Yeah, because it got dark. Shadows and all.

A gust of wind swirled around. The campfire was raging. I was worried the fire would spread and set the whole place ablaze. Our tents would burn. I didn’t want them to burn. We built them. Mario and I. Together. But Mario was an idiot. I didn’t like him.

I didn’t like him.

Everyone ran toward me. Surrounding me in a circle.

What were they doing?

I was scared. I thought they were going to drag me away from here.

I didn’t want to leave.

This place is becoming scary, but we built this place. All of us. We made the water hole. I look over. The water is shooting up like a fountain. Like a well has sprung up. The water is black. No. It wasn’t supposed to be like this. Sombre leaves don’t make the water dirty. But this water is dirty now. We can’t drink it anymore.

I look up. The clouds are spitting lightning. Thunderous sound shaking the ground. I can feel the rock vibrating as the sky roars. I never liked storms. I like lightning. I have to admit. They are cool to see from afar. But I don’t like the thunders. They are so loud. There was this one time lightning struck so close to our house and the thunder was so loud it broke our window. It was scary. It was dangerous. Mom said don’t stand by the window to watch the storm. Window could break and I could get hurt by the shattered glass.

Shattered.

Shattered.

Everything is shattering here too.

A tree falls over. Landing on the ground just a few paces away from where we were. Next one could land on us. I wonder if it was the tree that squirrels hid in. I hope they are not hurt. They are cute. Three of them. Like Mom and Dad and me. I don’t know why Beatrice said they were weird. I don’t know what was wrong with Mario that he thought they were weird. I know. Actually. Because Mario is an idiot.

Oh God. I feel like the sky is going to collapse. The black cloud looks so close to us now. Thank God it isn’t raining at least. Oh no—it just started raining. The raindrops are thick. They hit hard against the ground. It is a thunderstorm, a ferocious one.

But it is weird. Maybe they are right. This place is weird. We are getting pelted by rain but we are not getting wet. The rain pours down on the campfire like a waterfall but the fire is getting bigger.

Oh no. The fire is going to spread. I see it. The fire is mixing with water. Flowing with water. Spreading.

Wait. That can’t be right. But it is happening.

Oh God. Everyone was right. This place is wrong. This place is cursed. But I thought—I thought we could stay here. I liked it here. Just until this morning. Just until Mario decided to be an idiot. Just until he ran away and came back like he was a different person. His hands bleeding. I even offered to help him. But he was mean. He doesn’t want to be a friend. He is an idiot.

I cling to the rock.

Somebody. Somebody help me.

I feel like I’m sinking into the ground. Everything is dark. Everything is scary. I looked up, praying—

Then I see a bird. A bird flying in this weather? An eagle? A crow?

I can’t tell. It circles above us and flies away. I wish I was a bird. I want to fly away. But I want to stay here. But this place is dangerous. I’m scared.

Then I hear—I hear a thumping sound from afar, getting closer. I pay attention. What is it? What is it? A bear? A tiger? We are in danger. We are—

A horse emerges out of the woods. Somebody is sitting on it. I look up. I can’t make out his face very well. There is a light emanating from just behind his head. But then he stops the horse, gets off the horse, and walks toward me.

Who is this man?

"Leo."

He calls my name. He knows me. I recognize the voice.

"Mi—mister!"

I am saved. The Gentleman has come to save me. The group that surrounded me makes way for him. He comes to me, kneels down next to me, and hugs me. He tells me,

"Everything is going to be okay, Leo. I will get you out of here."

Oh God. I am saved. Mister is an angel. He saves me from this place.

He holds my hand and leads me to the horse. Helps me get up on the horse. Then he hops onto the horse.

Then we ride away. Through the woods. Far away from that place.

And we are free. We are in a safe place. The sky is clear. No more rain. No lightning. No thunder. No scary trees.

I am saved.
