LEO

This was not the infirmary.

I was sure of that.

The bed was much more comfortable. The bedsheets were the most luxurious fabric I had ever felt in my life. And the pillows—heavenly.

Although I had woken up at least an hour or two ago, I’d stayed in bed just enjoying the blissful feeling of lying on a herd of gentle lambs.

Then the door clicked open, and two men came in.

"Mister Mathias!" I yelled out in joy as soon as I saw his face. I had finally gotten to hear his name when he brought me here, and I just felt that much closer to him.

"Hello, Leo," he said. His voice was so soothing.

Then I noticed the person standing behind him.

"Marius!"

I was equally—actually, no, but almost!—happy to see him.

But he seemed puzzled, or even shocked.

"Eh? Are you okay?" I asked him.

"...Skylark?" he said, as if I was unrecognizable.

"Yup! Leo Skylark!" I confirmed.

I was in a good mood. After coming down from the mountain on Mathias’s horse, I was led to this room that they said was a special recovery place for special students. I was served delicious sausages and mashed potatoes—not quite Erdville, but the softness made up for it—and was given clean clothes, this comfy bed, and was told I could stay here as long as I wanted.

Seeing that Marius wasn’t talking, I figured I’d ask him a few questions instead.

"How’s everyone? Dimitri? Isabelle? Beatrice?"

He still said nothing, just standing there like a dumb scarecrow. It made me laugh.

"What’s... so funny?" Marius finally asked.

"Why are you so stiff?" I asked him in return.

"Don’t you... remember what happened?" he asked again.

"I just—yeah, I know, it was scary with all the storm and stuff, but I’m fine now. Thanks, Marius."

Marius’s eyes scanned around the room, and his gaze fell on me again. All the while, Mathias was standing on the left side of my bed looking down at me with a smile, his hands clasped in front of him, with his two index fingers tapping together.

"You called me Marius," the big dummy said.

"That’s your name, eh?"

I was starting to get a little confused about why he was acting strange.

"Sir, is Skylark okay?" Marius asked Mathias.

"As you can see," Mathias said with the proud grin of a farmer with his healthy pig.

Then I noticed Marius had bandages around his hand.

"Huh—are YOU okay, Marius?" I asked him, pointing at the bandage.

Then his eyes wavered, his lips parted as if he wanted to say something, his fists clenched and opened, then whatever he was about to say, he swallowed back.

"What happened to your hand?" I asked him again. I was a little concerned.

"Nothing," he said dismissively, turning his head away slightly.

Then I realized I had forgotten something.

It was quite rude, actually.

"Ouch, I’m sorry. I should have done this first," I said to Marius and decided to introduce Big Sis Sally, who had been standing quietly on the right side of my bed with her warm smile.

"This is Big Sis Sally. You remember her? I told you about her, right?"

"Aw, I told you not to call me that, Leo. And—nice to meet you, Marius. I heard a lot about you," Sally said with a polite bow.

But Marius didn’t respond.

Not only that, he looked as if his mind had gone for a walk and then come back to find its home in a mess.

"Skylark—"

Marius wanted to say something, but Mathias cut him off, waving his hand.

"Not now, Marius."

"Big Sis—sorry, Sally came for a surprise visit! Can you believe that? I couldn’t believe it either when I woke up and saw her standing here! Heh~."

Marius remained silent, which was starting to get a little rude.

"Aren’t you going to say hi to Sally?" I poked at him with my eyes.

"Leo, why don’t you rest some more?" Mathias suggested and gently pulled the bedcover over my body. It was soft. It made me feel sleepy again.

"Aye aye, Mister Mathias."

With that, Mathias and Marius headed for the door, with Mathias ushering Marius out first. Before they closed the door, I raised my voice so Marius could hear.

"Come again, Marius! Sally has a lot of stories to tell that will make you laugh! Haha!"

Then the door shut closed.

I looked to my right, but then noticed that Big Sis Sally was gone.

"Eh? Where did you go, Sis?"

But then I started to feel sleepy. Maybe Sally went to the toilet. Maybe Sally went for a walk. Maybe Sally went back to Erdville to bring more friends.

It would be nice to see Davi and Abe again. Even Blabber Becky could keep me company here. It would be fun. But then again, I probably wouldn’t last a day listening to her talk non-stop. But I’d been away from home for a long time. If anybody could tell me everything that had been happening since I left, it would be Blabber Becky.

I also wondered if Marius would bring Thomas sometime. He was in a different group, so I didn’t get to talk to him about how his camping trip was. I wanted to tell him all about the Sombre tents we built and the wild boar Dimitri caught and how Marius taught me to—

Then my head hurt a little, and I felt a little dizzy. Mathias was right. I felt great, but I probably needed some more time to recover. But I knew I’d be back on my feet in no time staying in a place like this, eating all this great food and sleeping in the best bed in the world.

I turned onto my side and felt the mattress beneath me hug me snugly. I was sinking, sinking into sleep. I felt like my body was melting. It was comfortable.

It was so good here.
