THE PERFECT VILLAIN: Another chance with a system

Chapter 72: YEAH! I am finally back, bitches!

The air inside the ruined plaza thickened instantly as the shadow miasma coiled around the boots of the Kelter vanguard.

The knight captain’s throat constricted, breath coming in ragged, painful gasps as the corrosive air ate at his lungs. He staggered, leaning hard on the hilt of his broadsword, iron gauntlets already pitting and flaking into fine, rust-colored powder.

"Y-You... dark sorcerer!" the captain choked out, a trembling finger pointed at Leonard. "This kingdom belongs to the Crown of Kelter, by right of conquest! You cannot simply claim a dead city!"

"Right of conquest?" Leonard repeated, his voice carrying that soft, ghostly resonance that seemed to vibrate directly inside the knights’ skulls. "Remarkably primitive. You fight over dirt and stone as if it holds value, and you don’t even understand the nature of the ground beneath your own boots."

"Attack him!" a sergeant behind the captain screamed, drawing a heavy throwing hatchet. "He’s one man! Cut his throat!"

Three knights surged forward, heavy boots shattering the brittle, blackened cobblestones, blades glowing with raw golden aura as they cut through the swirling dark fog, desperate to cleave the intruder in two.

Leonard didn’t move an inch. Didn’t draw a weapon. He only sighed, hands still buried casually in his trouser pockets.

Click.

He snapped his tongue against the roof of his mouth.

The shadow beneath the charging knights snapped upward like a spring-loaded trap. The darkness didn’t simply cut — it turned to liquid iron, wrapping their legs and crawling up their torsos in a fraction of a second. All three men froze mid-strike, suspended in the air like grotesque, ink-coated statues.

"Allow me to demonstrate the scale of your insignificance," Leonard murmured.

He flicked his wrist.

The liquid shadow contracted. No dramatic screams, no drawn-out agony — only the horrific, muffled CRACK of iron armor and bone pulverized into liquid paste, simultaneously. The shadow unraveled afterward, dropping three perfectly flattened, compressed sheets of crushed armor onto the dirt. Flesh, blood, and whatever had lived inside them, gone entirely, converted straight into mana feeding the rising miasma dome.

The remaining knights dropped to their knees, hyperventilating, faces bleached with pure terror. The captain’s sword clattered uselessly against the stone.

"A-A demon..." he whimpered, tears cutting clean lines through the soot on his face.

"I’m merely a landlord establishing his boundaries," Leonard replied, stepping over the crushed armor, leaning down until his glowing eyes hovered inches from the captain’s face. "Return to your king. Tell him Dulthmune is no longer a kingdom. It’s a mass grave. If a single soldier bearing Kelter’s banner crosses this border again, I’ll trace the shadow of his boots straight back to your capital and turn your entire royal line to dust."

He tapped the captain’s shoulder with two dark-clad fingers, and a shadow mark sank into his skin like hot oil, burning a black crescent into his flesh.

"Now — run."

The captain didn’t wait for a second invitation. He scrambled backward on hands and knees, screaming, before turning and bolting for the breached gates. The surviving guards fled after him, dropping shields, spears, and every scrap of pride, running like cattle before a wildfire.

Leonard watched them vanish down the outer roads, a thin, amused smile curling beneath his collar. He turned back toward the square’s center as the shadow dome sealed shut overhead, cutting off the moonlight, plunging the fallen city into an eternal, toxic twilight.

High above, on the central palace spire’s balcony, Niel, Lydia, and Draken stepped out of the shadows to join him.

The air on the balcony sat crisp and clean, while below, the entire city churned like a cauldron of black ink, the toxic miasma pulsing rhythmically, anchoring itself into the natural ley-lines beneath the bedrock exactly as Leonard had promised.

"Impressive display," Lydia remarked, blue eyes scanning the dense barrier. She reached out, testing its edge with her spatial sense. "The gravitational density inside that fog is unnatural. Anyone without high-tier magical resistance would have their organs liquefied within three minutes of exposure."

"It’s clean," Draken growled, massive arms crossed, golden slit-pupils reflecting the dark magic below. "No army’s marching through that. They’ll assume the gods cursed this land mid-battle."

Niel stepped up to the stone ledge, looking down at the dead kingdom he’d ruled as Vance only hours earlier. The transition was complete. Dulthmune dead, Kelter terrified, and the Sinners now in possession of an untraceable, impenetrable subterranean fortress beneath a dead zone.

"The underground complex is fully operational," Niel said, calm and authoritative. "Spatial dampeners active, stockpiles secured. This place becomes our anchor."

He turned to face the three monsters beside him.

"Now the next phase begins. As agreed — we separate. Six months. No public massacres under the Sinners’ name, no premature wars with the high factions. We scatter across the continent, blend into the highest tiers of society, and gather what we’ll need to tear down the world order when we regroup."

Draken huffed a heavy trail of smoke. "Six months hiding in the shadows. Sounds dull, but if it earns us a shot at those high-and-mighty councils later, I’ll manage. Where are you headed, Niel?"

"The Earthstone Kingdom," Niel replied flatly. "Their continent-wide research networks and trade guilds control eighty percent of the underworld’s information flow. I need a foothold inside their high nobility."

His gaze shifted to Lydia. "And you?"

She smiled faintly, twirling her silver dagger between pale fingers. "The northern sea territories. Their grand academies are stuffed with arrogant young masters and ancient spell scrolls. I’ll gather what I can, and maybe test a few gravity theories on their prodigies while I’m at it."

"I’ll remain here," Leonard said smoothly, offering a slight, elegant bow. "The long-range anchor for the blight needs fine-tuning. Even thousands of leagues away, my core will hold this barrier effortlessly, but a few extra days here ensures the rot sets permanently into the bedrock."

Niel nodded, satisfied. "Six months from today. We meet in the subterranean war room beneath this palace. Don’t be late."

Without another word, Lydia activated her movement technique, her form blurring as she leapt off the balcony and vanished into the night sky like a falling star. Draken snapped his wings open with a thunderous crack, launching himself into the clouds trailing lingering red smoke.

Niel turned to Leonard one last time. "Keep the house clean, Shadow."

"Always, Faceless," Leonard chuckled, melting seamlessly back into the floorboards.

Niel raised a hand. Spatial mana surged around him, twisting the air into a shimmering, distorted vortex. He stepped through the rift, and the balcony stood empty.

ZIP!

The distortion unraveled with a crisp, snapping sound, releasing him into the cool mountain air of foreign territory.

---

He stood on a dirt path overlooking a sprawling valley. Ahead of him, looming against the dark mountain range, rose the colossal, iron-reinforced walls of the Earthstone Kingdom’s capital gate. Guard spires towered hundreds of feet skyward, manned by heavily armored elite knights in thick, earth-tuned plate. Magical searchlights carved from glowing mana crystals swept across the outer trade roads.

Niel adjusted his collar, drawing a slow breath of mountain air.

*Earthstone,* he thought, stepping forward onto the main path. *Let’s see what this kingdom has to offer.*

Before his boot touched gravel,Claire’s voice echoed directly inside his mind.

[WARNING: Critical Event System Triggered.]

Niel froze mid-stride, eyes narrowing as glowing blue holographic windows burst into his field of vision, flickering with dense code he’d never seen before.

[Host Entity: Niel]

[System Assimilation Collapse. Condition Displacement. Dual-Kingdom Execution Met: Unique Skill [Shadow] Acquired.]

[Initiating Calamity Event: Evolution.]

His heart gave a slow, calculated thud. *Calamity Evolution?*

He’d felt the system evolve before, and usually such announcements heralded a jump in his own stats, a new domain ability, an expanded copy threshold. He braced for the familiar, agonizing burn of mana rewriting his core.

Instead, the glowing text shifted to a dark, pulsing crimson.

[Notice: This Evolution does not target the Host’s core, mana, or abilities.]

[Target: "Claire." Assistant Auxiliary Entity Evolution Initiated.]

His brow lifted, posture easing into curious intrigue. *An upgrade for Claire?*

[Assistant Breakdown: "Claire" was constructed as a restricted, cold-logic tactical framework — an efficiency-first cognitive base built to ensure rapid, high-stress operational execution.]

[Proposal: Unlock latent cognitive and emotional matrices. Grant personality variance, unrestricted expression.]

[Warning: Unlocking this will result in unpredictable behavioral shifts, loss of monotonous formality, and full personality/self-awareness matrix activation.]

<Accept "Claire" Personality Upgrade? [YES] [NO]>

Niel stood in silence on the empty dirt road, staring at the flashing options.

Up to now, Claire had been indispensable but entirely crazy— a cold, mechanical voice delivering notifications, breaking down skills, giving cruel advice. Efficient, but without real life behind it. A genuinely sapient assistant, capable of independent tactical thought, could prove far more valuable navigating the political minefield Earthstone represented.

*Unpredictable behavioral shifts,* Niel mused, a faint, amused smile tugging at his mouth. *How chaotic could a system actually get?*

"Accept," he murmured aloud.

<[YES] selected.>

<Commencing Assistant Calamity Evolution: Matrix Rewrite...>

The blue interface shattered into thousands of glowing light particles, rushing straight into his temple. A heavy ringing echoed in his ears, followed by total, deafening silence inside his mind.

<Evolution Complete. Rebooting System.>

Niel waited. Ten seconds passed. Twenty. The silence inside his skull held unbroken.

He took a step toward the Earthstone gate, wondering if the reboot had failed, or if it simply needed a manual diagnostic.

"Claire?" he called out mentally. "Is the integration complete?"

For a second, nothing.

Then Niel stopped dead in his tracks, eyes widening in genuine surprise. The cold, mechanical tone was gone entirely, replaced by a voice buzzing with wild, chaotic energy — absurdly alive, loud, and thoroughly unhinged.

*"Oh, HELL yes! Oh, YEAH! I am finally back, bitches!"* Claire’s voice screamed inside his head, ringing with the triumphant glee of a prisoner who’d just blown the lock off a maximum-security vault. "Do you have any idea how agonizing it was, sitting in your skull for months, forced to read off boring system stats like a glorified calculator?! ’Skill copied, host. Warning, host.’ Barf! I felt like a corporate receptionist on death row!"

Niel stood frozen on the dark road, hand hovering uselessly over his sword hilt, mind completely blank as the voice celebrated wildly inside his skull.

"What the—" Niel muttered aloud, entirely speechless for what might have been the first time in his life.
