The Plant Master Becomes A Mute Sub-Beast: Farming And Laying Eggs
Chapter 228: Cleaning UpThe cleaning up began as soon as the sun rose above the cliff.
Edward directed. This was an undeniable fact, because in the whole family only he was patient enough to look at a mess as high as a person’s head without wanting to set it on fire.
Finnick and Chloe provided the pulling force. Vines threaded through each gap, wrapped around the book piles, and carried them out to the yard in the exact order Edward instructed. Sane was in charge of heavy objects: removing a few rotten boards blocking the door, carrying the stone footstool, and dragging out from under the bed an earthenware jar that even the old man himself did not remember what it contained.
(Inside was a dried mouse corpse. The old man said it was a "specimen".)
Kaelen plucked pampas grass to make a broom, covered his mouth and nose, sweeping with one hand and hugging books with the other, busily running in and out.
Sane had carried both the old Sage and the rocking chair to a shady tree in the yard. The old man lay leisurely on the chair, tightly hugging the egg-carrying cloth bag, playing an obstructive role.
"That is important!"
Sane had just lifted a stack of yellowed sheepskin parchment, before his hand could move it to the left pile, he was scolded. He obediently put it down on the right pile.
Half an hour later, the right pile was as high as a waist, while the "discard" left pile was still empty, clean, and lonely.
Kaelen picked up a torn sheepskin piece, on which were exactly three words and a gnaw mark.
"Sir, this..."
"That is extremely important."
Kaelen silently put it on the right side.
Eventually, Edward still had to step in. The boy transformed into his human form and began directing everyone to categorize the books by subject. Herbs, rituals, farming knowledge, array knowledge, history, geography, travelogues... As long as the words were readable, they all had a separate place.
By noon, Sane led Finnick to hunt a few small beasts, then circled back to the tribe to get some wheat flour and tofu newly made by the Rabbit clan group to bring back to the Sage’s place. Kaelen washed his hands, began taking cooking utensils out of his spatial bag, and started cooking lunch.
The tools he used today were all ironware.
The old Sage was extremely interested and immediately edged closer to watch him cook. Occasionally when Kaelen turned around to grab the ladle or the spatula, he would inevitably grasp thin air. He helplessly said:
"Sage, whatever you want to research, wait until after lunch I will give it to you to research, now please return the spatula to me to stir-fry vegetables."
The old Sage clicked his tongue, threw the spatula back, stroked his beard, and said:
"That storage bag of yours is nice, make one for me later."
Sane carried a pile of sawn wood back, hearing that he hurriedly said, "That takes a few days to make, tonight we still have to think about what to exchange with the White Elephant clan Sage, can we make it for you tomorrow?"
The old man snorted, "No need to think anymore, I have thought on your behalf. This pile of ironware of yours is enough for the entire White Elephant clan to worship you like Gods... That is a geography book, put it in the geography pile." The old man spoke loudly to Edward who was about to throw a moth-eaten unreadable book into the rotten pile, then casually said to Kaelen:
"With your knowledge, you must know that our Beastman clan’s Weapon Forging Knowledge was completely destroyed by the God of Decay, we can only use the most primitive tools. If you know this Knowledge, why not take it out to exchange with that old man, I guarantee he will serve you all the way to your bed!"
Kaelen and Sane: "..." You do not need to speak so vulgarly...
Kaelen cleared his throat once and said, "Do you not want to get it for your clan?"
The old Sage chuckled, "That bunch of blockheads are only good enough to learn to build houses and learn to farm, telling them to learn blacksmithing? Forget it, this old man still wants to live a few more decades."
Kaelen burst into laughter and focused on cooking. Considering the old man’s teeth were almost all loose, he decided to cook the rice with a bit excess water, and braised pork and tofu until soft and mushy.
He stir-fried some more napa cabbage and cooked a bowl of potato bone soup, very quickly finishing the meal.
Sane had finished making a wide wooden table, wiped it clean, and placed it in the middle of the yard. He made a few more small chairs to sit and eat. The old Sage exclaimed in admiration:
"Oh my, this hand speed is quite fast huh. Hey, I just saw you separately assemble different wood pieces, why are there no vines to tie them? Oh oh, how is this joint assembled???"
Kaelen was amused, "The mortise and tenon method, later if iron nails can be forged, nails can also be used to nail them. Grandfa, first we eat first, then whatever matter we talk about it later."
Kaelen began to set the table. Finnick and Edward each helped him carry a dish of food. Kaelen smiled looking at the little dough ball Edward in Ryder’s human form running back and forth, a strand of hair on top of his head sticking up looking like a blade of grass. He was a bit puzzled and asked Edward:
"You have been out for more than two hours, haven’t you?"
Nova gently flew over to perch on top of Edward’s head, hugging the ’blade of grass’ on the boy’s head, loudly guaranteeing:
"Lord Priest, now my spiritual energy is very abundant, I can maintain the possession state for Master Edward all day long!"
Kaelen joyfully nodded, "Then that is great. How is Ryder’s condition?"
Edward grinned widely, "He is about to wake up, at most one more month."
Kaelen was a bit anticipatory. Before they came to the Eastern continent, the couple had argued because of Ryder’s matter, the boy must have been very sad. He was very looking forward to Ryder waking up, to tell the boy an apology, and to say that he also loved Ryder as his own biological son.
On this side, the father and son were talking, on the other side the old man had urged, "Oh quickly quickly, this old man is starving to death."
Finnick quickly said, "Grandfa, you must wash your hands before eating."
Saying that the boy held the old Sage’s hand, leading the old man to wash his hands. The old man looked at the white foam gradually turning black on his hands, clicking his tongue twice, "You kids truly invent many tricks. It makes me also curious about the place where you were born."
Kaelen placed the ceramic bowl of braised pork on the table, smiled and said, "Waiting for the array to be fixed, we will invite you to Crimson as a guest."
In his mind, he had already formed the idea of placing anchor points at both ends, turning the one-way array into a round-trip teleportation array.
When everyone had washed their hands clean, they began to sit down at the table to eat. The old man did not know how to use chopsticks, Kaelen handed him a wooden spoon. Perhaps this was the most delicious meal the old Sage had ever eaten.
Previously when conditions were not available there was no good food, by the time conditions were sufficient he was already old, unable to eat tough roasted meat anymore. Today this tofu braised pork dish was braised soft and mushy, he just took one bite, the meat piece seemed to melt in his mouth, he didn’t even need to chew much.
As for the potato bone soup, Sane had cracked the marrow bone, took the marrow inside out, and placed it in his bowl. Adding a bit of soup broth along with a few pieces of fluffy potato, the old Sage broke his rule and ate an extra bowl of rice.
He ungracefully tilted his head up to the sky and burped loudly, making Finnick and Edward laugh boisterously.
After eating, the two children climbed onto the old man’s rocking chair, lying on his two sides listening to him tell stories about the Eastern continent and his youth. Kaelen sat reading the scroll nearby, while Sane built a wooden bookshelf. The two worked for a while, gradually no longer hearing the chirping sounds. They looked up and saw the grandfather and grandchildren had fallen soundly asleep since who knew when, Chloe and Nova were also leaning against their masters’ neck crooks sleeping.
Sane and Kaelen looked at each other, smiled together, feeling if they grew old later on, their children had mates and had children, it would probably be this scene as well.
