The Plant Master Becomes A Mute Sub-Beast: Farming And Laying Eggs
Chapter 256: The Missing EggKaelen was forced by Draven to stay bedridden for exactly one month.
He argued for three days then gave up, because Draven brought this matter complaining directly to Sane. Sane cleared away all pens, papers, and blueprints in the house, every day only allowing his mate to hold a pen for exactly two hours, confiscating it when the time passed.
Kaelen lay flat on the bed, bored to the point of counting every beam on the roof.
In contrast, the egg was very busy.
During the day it lay in the nest for the Golden Peafowl clan to take turns incubating; in the afternoon Larkspur carried it over for Kaelen to hug for a while, at night carrying it back to the western housing block. Ignis crawled over whenever he saw his younger brother; some days he spat fire roasting the egg, some days he lay across the eggshell falling asleep directly.
The Golden Peafowl clan crowd initially panicked, later got used to it; seeing the brothers of another family playing with each other like that and nobody dying.
Outside that house, the entire southern half of the Western continent was being turned upside down.
Right on the day Kaelen passed the critical condition, Sane gathered all ten thousand Crimson Warriors to divide tasks; finishing dividing in half a morning, nobody was allowed to sit idle for a single day.
The first task was food, and Sane placed this task at the top. The Western continent people ate starchy roots with millet porridge; starchy roots were dug out in the forest, millet was scattered on hillsides and a few square fields in the tribe, getting whatever little they could. Having a good harvest meant being full for three months; losing the harvest meant the whole tribe gnawed on tree roots.
Sane wrote the task contents filling several pages of paper, assigning everyone into separate teams.
The agriculture team was divided into three prongs. One prong went surveying land and water sources, marking where terraced fields could be built, where ditches could be led; one prong composted fertilizer, making farm tools, building mortars and waterwheels; the third prong selected and incubated seeds.
Wet rice, sweet potatoes, soybeans, mustard greens, all were brought over from Crimson. Besides that were also a bunch of local plant seeds Kaelen gathered throughout a month and a half struggling down in the Abyss of Death, every kind withstanding cold and poor soil, only waiting for someone to domesticate them.
The second task was construction. Stone walls, moats, traps against beast tides, grain silos built high against dampness, and several brick kilns built right on site to avoid having to carry bricks hundreds of miles.
The third task was skill passing. Blast furnaces, forging farm tools, paper, cloth, saltpeter, refrigerators. Missing blueprints meant sending letters to Aegis asking for more.
Before this, Asher could not find a salt mine but found a saltwater lake. Wanting to find the sea from this saltwater lake was impossible, because they hit black mist, unable to continue going further. However, just this one saltwater lake was enough to make salt to feed the whole tribe, even having a surplus to supply the Western continent.
Zale sacrificed another teleportation turn to send a massive amount of salt over.
The fourth task was what Sane valued the most.
The entire southern half only had Sub-Beasts. They knew farming, weaving, dispensing medicine, holding spears standing guard as a formality, but no one had ever taught them to fight properly.
These past decades they survived relying on running away, relying on the beastman side occasionally returning to clean up. Now their beastmen did not return anymore; if no one protected them, they would die cleanly.
Sane explicitly cut three thousand Warriors acting as instructors distributed back to every tribe; morning farming, afternoon practicing martial arts, evening learning literacy. Sane separately chose a very distant empty plot of land, erecting a Divine Energy activation array right in the Western continent, wanting to try to see if he could pick up anyone having Divine Energy.
Among the remaining people, more than two hundred people were called privately by Sane into the house from the night before; instructing them one by one, they then quietly scattered across the southern half. Some followed the construction team, some pretended to be blacksmiths, some carried salt up to the empty land bordering the northern half. Once every seven days, news flowed back to the Black Scale tribe.
As for the military medical team, Draven dragged them all out to work.
They conducted health checks for all Sub-Beasts in the tribes; finishing checking they made ledgers, one page per person, recording from pulse to tongue color.
The thing Draven cared about the most was the dozens of Golden Peafowl clan beastmen.
The entire southern half only had this exact group of beastmen left living mixed with Sub-Beasts; inside their bodies still carrying demonic seeds, it was just that being suppressed by the Fire God’s Heart on Ignis’s neck they did not go mad. Draven called that thing turbidity level, a cloudy ripple layer in the meridians that Walter’s infrared scanner saw immediately at a glance.
Draven had Walter scan everyone once every three days, measuring continuously for ten days.
The result was exactly as predicted; everyone’s turbidity level stood still, being suppressed they lay still, neither increasing nor decreasing.
Except for seven people.
Draven measuring the first time thought he saw wrong.
These seven people’s turbidity was decreasing. Not fast, every measuring time only nudging a bit, but decreasing steadily throughout ten days. Yet demonic seeds could not naturally disappear; Draven was certain about this matter, because a few days ago he had tried every possible way, acupuncture, guiding Magical Energy, feeding the strongest antidotes in the box, having no way to budge it even one percent.
He pulled out the list of seven people to scrutinize. Not the same age, the youngest was fourteen the oldest forty-two. Not the same rank. Not eating from the same kitchen, because the Black Scale tribe divided into four kitchens. Not drinking from the same water source. None among these seven people used his medicine, because all were healthy, completely having no reason to drink it.
Their common point was exactly... incubating the egg?
Draven sat biting his pen until past midnight, finally jumping up hugging the whole stack of ledgers running straight to Kaelen’s house, running so fast he crashed into Sane carrying a water basin at the door.
But before he had time to say a single sentence, outside was already chaotic.
Sane’s family’s egg had disappeared.
The whole tribe jumped up turning over every house; Larkspur with a pale white face ran searching, his mouth mumbling that he only dozed off for a moment, only dozed off for a moment and the egg disappeared without a trace. Kaelen immediately jumped out of bed, but was forced by Sane to sit back down, putting on slippers carefully before finally running outside.
Kaelen and Sane held hands, using their bloodline connection to sense a bit. The connection was extremely clear, proving Sunlight was still in the tribe, moreover very close to them.
"Wait, look on the ground!"
Walter had sharp eyes, immediately seeing the anomaly on the ground. The stone road was still unfinished, therefore a stretch of road extending across the tribe was still a dirt road. Everyone saw on this dirt ground very clear movement traces. It did not look like footprints or dragging marks, but looked like the trace of someone rolling a stone all along the way.
The rolling trace was vivid, and it did not go straight; it curved around two water basins, curving around a firewood pile...
Finally, everyone followed the trace and found the egg at the end of the tribe.
The egg rolled all the way to the end of the western housing block, lying close to the sleeping place of a Golden Peafowl beastman who was having a fever since the afternoon. This person slept like the dead, and his face was visibly rosy.
Kaelen hurriedly stepped forward to hug the egg; his back immediately let out a cracking sound. Kaelen froze, but still stubbornly stood up as if nothing happened.
If he let everyone know he, a dignified Saint Beast level Warrior, actually had his back sprained by the weight of his son, where would he hide his face!
---
Half an hour later, the door of Kaelen’s house was tightly closed; inside were only seven people, comprising the Kaelen couple, Draven, Asher, Walter, Anthony and Wofu who was in cub form.
Kaelen listened to Draven presenting completely then nodded, explaining very briefly.
The demonic seed implanted into beastmen was an inferior type, used to control things weaker than it. For Ignis, the Fire God’s Heart only suppressed it but could not take it out, therefore the Golden Peafowl clan people recovering was a temporary recovery. As for Sunlight, that thing was not poison, but food.
Draven gaped: "Eating... eating demonic seeds?"
"Yeah." Kaelen patted the eggshell lying in his lap: "No wonder this brat grows so fast."
Sane glanced at the egg once, suddenly remembering something, stood up going to fetch the old basket out to compare. The egg now could not fit into that basket anymore. But the most important part Kaelen left for last: "This matter is absolutely forbidden to be leaked out. Just the four of us knowing is the end of it."
Walter was stunned: "Why must we hide it? Outside there are still so many people..."
"Exactly because outside there are still so many people." Kaelen interrupted: "You think about it, if now the whole tribe knows there is an egg that can suck demonic seeds, what will happen?"
"That’s not all." Sane continued: "Sylvain is holding the entire northern half with exactly that thing. Demonic seeds are the strings, he is the string holder. If he knows in the southern half there is an egg that can cut his strings..."
Then before they had time to figure out countermeasures, Sunlight would already be boiled by Sylvain. Do not forget, even though Sylvain now was fearfully hiding in a corner not daring to stick his face out, his ability was completely not weak at all.
Sylvain was single-handedly nurtured by the God of Light, the perfect choice for the Light Holy Son position that was always vacant. If not deceived in love by Alistair, Sylvain also would not reach the point of stepping into dirty mud like now.
Him alone, plus the help of six beastmen beside him along with the residual thought of the God of Decay, they completely could not protect Sunlight.
Everyone met and discussed until almost morning; finally, Sane and Kaelen decided to let Draven carry Sunlight by his side, Walter and Anthony assisting him. When Draven treated patients, Walter would rely on spiritual eyes to study how Sunlight sucked demonic seeds, thereby researching out an antidote.
The couple also brought Ignis back to their side to watch over, avoiding the boy being carried away by people at some unknown time.
Larkspur was extremely reluctant; Kaelen packed him off to Crimson instead. There were a lot of children in Crimson, Finnick and Ryder were even personally taking care of the younger siblings over there. Larkspur was good at taking care of children, letting him go over there to help take care of the kids was also not bad.
Besides Larkspur, Kaelen and Sane also packed a ’study abroad’ team of the Golden Peafowl clan to go, because they discovered the Golden Peafowl clan wove cloth and sewed clothes extremely well, better than any Avian clan they knew.
Meanwhile, silk weaving and dyeing techniques all required high craftsmanship, completely having no clan suiting this job more than the Golden Peafowl clan...
