It had been half a month since the first day Leonardo woke up, he could already walk and talk normally.

However his body was very weak, his whole body as thin as a stick, walking a stretch of road he had to stop to pant. Even so he could still grasp the situation of the Crimson tribe, his mood rising with an awe mixed with complexity.

The structure of this tribe he felt extremely familiar with, but also felt a bit strange. When his soul left his body, he had been to a world quite like this, but not as spacious and prosperous as this. Throughout the time fleeing in the underground sewers, he always wished there would be a day he could walk proudly under the sunlight, stay in those clean elevated houses, eat those fragrantly mouth-watering dishes.

Now that dream had come true, Leonardo felt a bit unreal.

"Oh, ruined again. In the end what must be done to be correct?"

A melancholic voice rang out by Leonardo’s ear, followed by vexed sighs. Only then did Leonardo know he had walked to the tribe’s dining hall area at some unknown time.

It was not yet mealtime now, the dining hall did not have many people, only the chefs were looking melancholically at a pile of golden-brown cakes in front of them. Leonardo’s spirit shook, wasn’t that long golden-brown cake exactly bread?

Leonardo had once hidden in a corner of a bakery secretly watching the baker make bread, then even stole some ingredients back to make it himself many times. Once he was even discovered by people, if he did not run away fast he would have been beaten to death.

"Are you all making bread right?" A hoarse voice like sandpaper rubbing on wood reached the chefs’ ears. Everyone turned to look in the direction of the voice, only seeing a beastman as skinny as a bamboo tree poking his head in looking at them.

A Sub-Beast who knew Leonardo immediately answered: "Is it Leonardo? That’s right, we are learning to make bread. How did you know?"

Leonardo leaned on his stick slowly walking in, walking while saying: "Can you let me take a look?"

Everyone immediately agreed, automatically parting a path for him to enter.

Leonardo picked up a piece of bread, first bringing it to his nose to sniff. The sour smell hitting straight into his nose made him unconsciously frown. He squeezed the bread crust, hard as stone, completely lacking the elasticity a standard bread should have.

Leonardo broke the bread piece in half. The internal structure was very dense, like a cooked solid dough block.

"How did you guys make it?" Leonardo asked.

A chef recounted the process once, then took out the sourdough starter for Leonardo to see. This sourdough starter was fermented from whole wheat flour and water, a ratio of one bowl of flour to one bowl of water, put into a ceramic jar, covered loosely with leaves on top then placed in a warm place.

About two to three days later, the mixture began to bubble with tiny bubbles and had a slight sour smell, they would "feed the starter" by scooping out half (so the old starter would not starve because of being too crowded), then adding new flour and water to stir evenly.

After that just kept repeating the feeding every day, when the mixture swelled up to double its size only a few hours after feeding, the bubble network crisscrossed and emitted a mild sour fragrance like the smell of fermented fruit or beer smell, then the sourdough starter had completely succeeded!

Just taking the starter then giving the starter "food" like that resulted in endless starter to use.

After looking at the starter jar the chef brought out, Leonardo’s eyebrows relaxed, then smiled saying:

"Good starter, good ingredients. But everyone did the process wrong. This dough was fermented past the time, when kneading the dough it was not strong enough making the dough not able to link together. Can you let me try making it?"

"Yes, yes? But you look this weak, maybe not. You stand on the side directing, we will do it!"

Everyone nodded joyfully. The Lord Priest gave them the recipe for making bread and steamed buns. But the Priest only gave the recipe, as for the process they had to tinker themselves. The steamed buns they made successfully, but the bread they had tried for two whole months and still hadn’t made the flavor the Lord Priest described.

Leonardo also did not push it. He knew his body right now kneading half a batch of dough would tumble onto the ground.

He sat down on the chair people placed for him, resting his chin watching the chefs weigh and measure carefully. He sat on one side reading each process one by one:

"Starter is added into warm water first, do not add straight into the flour. Just warm water, touching it feeling like baby bath water is fine, too hot and the starter dies."

"Mix the flour, starter, water, salt and a bit of lemon juice together. Now start kneading. The force must be a bit strong."

A beastman immediately volunteered to take the dough kneading job. Leonardo beside him reminded each dough slapping and kneading manipulation, the sound created was so loud people thought the kitchen was chopping tube bones to stew soup today. When the dough was kneaded until it could be stretched into a film, Leonardo told them to add softened unsalted butter, kneading so the dough and butter blended evenly together.

"Alright, now everyone use a lid to tightly cover the dough, waiting for it to double in size."

During the time waiting for the dough to rise, everyone also split up to cook lunch. The assistant chefs brought all vegetables outside, sitting in the same place with Leonardo, working while talking extremely joyfully.

About an hour later, Leonardo and the chefs gathered to observe the dough’s rising condition. Leonardo nodded satisfied:

"It’s good now. You guys divide the dough into small round balls like this..." Leonardo demonstrated one ball: "Then let it rest for a bit longer."

About fifteen minutes later, Leonardo told the chef to roll the dough ball flat to remove all air bubbles, then tightly roll the dough edges, using the outer edges of two hands to roll and press the two ends to create a bread shape tapering at the two ends, bulging in the middle.

"Continue fermenting the second time, the fermenting time is equal to the first time."

The chef nodded, began to record into the notebook, then took out an hourglass to estimate the time. Leonardo curiously looked at the hourglass. He had seen the sundial in the middle of the large square in front of the Shrine, but had never seen an hourglass.

"This is an hourglass, only our kitchen uses it, because we need to time the food cooking accurately." An assistant chef seeing Leonardo curious, spoke up to explain for him to understand: "This clock is a two-hour type, do you see the horizontal lines on the clock body? Those are hour dividing lines, every thirty minutes is one line."

Leonardo nodded: "This is truly convenient."

Previously he made bread entirely relying on feeling, there were many times he accidentally forgot the time causing the dough to turn sour, ruining the whole batch of bread.

The hourglass quietly flowed, everyone still chatted lively, also not forgetting to popularize knowledge for Leonardo. Leonardo listened feeling like a duck listening to thunder, feeling perhaps he should register for the tribe’s night supplementary class, otherwise he would become an illiterate and uncultured person.

"The sand has flowed to the third line, it is an hour and a half right?" Leonardo pointed at the hourglass. The beastman chef bared his teeth grinning, praising Leonardo for absorbing quickly, then opened the fermenting basin to look.

The raw breads had swollen to double compared to the beginning, plump and smooth, touching them felt weightless. Leonardo told everyone to use a sharp knife to score a straight line in the middle of the bread surface then arrange them onto the baking tray. The oven had finished preheating, right after placing the bread tray into the oven, Leonardo told the chef to splash a bit of water onto the inner wall of the oven before closing the door.

The water was just splashed in, a sizzling sound immediately rang out, steam rising densely. The chef closed the oven door, asking curiously:

"Doing that is for what?"

"To make the bread swell bigger." Leonardo said slowly. He sat beside the oven, timing the bread baking perfectly, telling the chef to take the bread out of the oven. The assistant chef immediately recorded into the notebook: Bread baking time is twenty minutes.

Just opening the oven door, the sweet fragrance of cooked wheat flour and butter spread in the air, everyone unconsciously swallowed their saliva. When the chef took the tray out, they even heard the crispy bread crust crackling.

The bread just came out of the oven, everyone immediately gathered around to examine. A Sub-Beast assistant chef could not hold back reaching out to grab a bread piece, tossing it back and forth to lessen the heat then tore the bread piece in half.

No sour smell, only the fragrance of wheat flour and butter. Inside the bread there were porous hole layers, pressing into it immediately showed elasticity. The appearance and fragrance were like the Lord Priest described, as for the flavor it must be tasted to know.

Under the intent eyes of so many people, that Sub-Beast boldly tore a piece of bread putting it into his mouth to nibble. Crispy outside soft inside, the butter fragrance and wheat flour fragrance blended fragrantly at the tip of the tongue. The Sub-Beast’s eyes lit up, immediately bringing the whole bread to his mouth biting continuously.

Everyone seeing this expression of his was certain the bread was extremely delicious. They immediately fought each other for the bread on the tray, also not forgetting to save one for Leonardo.

Everyone first tore a small piece to taste first, then pulled out all the ways to eat bread that Kaelen had given them to try once: dipping in condensed milk, eating plain accompanied with soy milk, spreading fruit jam to eat, eating accompanied with sunny-side-up eggs, making sandwiches with different ingredients: egg filling, roasted meat filling, smoked meat filling, pate filling, sausage filling, spicy beef shred filling... These filling types were also sandwiched accompanied with lettuce, cucumber and coriander.

Those who could eat spicy food even added chili sauce.

Leonardo looked at a series of their manipulations and was stunned. Only now did he know, it turned out bread also had so many ways to eat. Previously when in that world, he imitated the eating way of humans, usually spreading fruit jam or sandwiching more smoked meat along with lettuce and tomatoes.

He timidly tore a piece of bread, dipped a bit into the condensed milk bowl, then put it into his mouth to nibble. The sweet and rich flavor immediately awakened the taste buds that had originally become bland due to long-term illness, making Leonardo’s nervous system become sluggish.

Because he was the greatest contributor so when trying all different ways to eat bread, everyone saved a piece for Leonardo.

They forgot Leonardo was a sick person who had just woken up not long ago, therefore...

Leonardo was hospitalized!
