The Primal Hunter

Chapter 1355 - Underwater Lake

Fucking shitty-ass design by who must be an incompetent moron, Jake cursed internally, not caring if he was insulting the system, the Exalted Prima, or anyone else. Whoever or whatever was the cause of this travesty deserved no respect or consideration, as their sin outweighed any good they could ever have contributed to existence.

There Jake was, just wanting a cool, nice swim to chill a little after flying through the insufferably hot desert, and sure, he had been allowed to take a dip, but this most certainly wasn’t what he’d imagined or hoped for.

Continuing to curse internally, Jake quickly put on some clothes despite being underwater, not wanting to be caught out naked by some random monster swimming around in this watery hellscape.

Expanding his senses and using Pulse, Jake was even more annoyed as he saw that he was surrounded by water in all directions, but at least he spotted what looked like a seafloor directly beneath him.

Wanting to get out as quickly as possible, Jake didn’t hesitate as he started flying downwards, which instantly made him frown.

Wait.

Jake pushed his speed further, and it almost felt as if the water parted in front of him, allowing him to go faster. Still a lot slower than outside the water, but way faster than the last time he’d found himself submerged like this. He also realized the reason almost immediately.

Primal Spirit of Man, you goddamn treasure of a skill, Jake grinned, knowing it was due to his increased resistance to environmental effects that he wasn’t as affected by the water when moving through it.

When moving through air, he’d already noticed that he wasn’t as affected by friction before, and going through water was kind of like going through air; water was just a lot denser and offered far more resistance. So in the same way that Primal Spirit of Man allowed him to ignore a good portion of air resistance, it also allowed him to ignore some of the... water friction? Didn’t know the term, and quite frankly, he didn’t care to.

This discovery was huge and made the negatives of underwater combat way less prominent than before, though it was definitely still annoying as hell. Plus, this was only when dealing with purely the environment. He knew that creatures specialized in fighting underwater could often manipulate and “claim” their surroundings, which would significantly nerf Jake’s Primal Spirit and make the water a way bigger problem.

And unfortunately for Jake, he felt plenty of such monsters hidden in the depths below at the seafloor. There weren’t that many swimming around, and Jake expertly dodged them all while using Unseen Hunter, really not intent on fighting anything in the water if he could avoid it.

Down at the seafloor, Jake spotted many large monsters crawling and slithering about. He observed what looked like mirrored, crab-like creatures with faces, claws, and all that on both sides, while the others looked like a mix of an eel and a snake. More eel, though, as Jake didn’t feel any semblance of familiarity with them as he got closer.

Still not wanting to fight anything, Jake landed on the seafloor soon after, hoping his boots would help him detect anything. Once more, he was unfortunate, as he didn’t pick up anything. He didn’t know if it was because his boots didn’t work in this kind of environment or that the treasure wasn’t considered “earthbound,” but in either case, it was just another reason to hate this place.

Using Pulse, Jake detected two places of note on the seafloor, both nearly identical to one another. That was part of the reason he hoped his boots could help him decide where to go, as there really wasn’t anything calling him to either.
