The Real Heiress Has an Appraisal System
Chapter 111: That’s Right! Gu Shengsheng Was QuestionedGu Shengsheng hadn’t even processed what was happening when she saw the large screen in the center go black.
Her phone’s screen went black too.
She had been forcibly kicked out of the livestream...
Gu Shengsheng was suddenly a little scared. ’I didn’t violate any rules, did I?’
Just a few seconds later, a staff member came out and said with a smile, "There was a small technical issue with Miss Gu’s joint livestream."
"We’re already working on fixing it. Miss Gu’s appraisal was correct; it is indeed an anonymous wood carving from Black Africa. However, what happens next has little to do with us. Please take a short break, Miss Gu."
Gu Shengsheng started walking toward Cai Pingfan.
She saw Cai Pingfan pointing at her, his face a mask of indignation. If it weren’t for the distance, she could have heard just how resentfully he was cursing her.
Gu Shengsheng was ready to go trade a few barbs with him, which would have oddly settled her nerves.
After all, you don’t win every round.
She’d won this round, and it was a good thing her parallel-universe self "liked" to keep up with state-run news apps. That was the only reason she knew about this thing.
Before she could get over to him, Gu Shengsheng was stopped by a staff member.
He said, "Miss Gu, you need to come to another area to assist with an investigation and cooperate with our work."
"..." Gu Shengsheng’s eyes went wide. ’I just won the first round, and now I’m getting hauled off to the station? Seriously... Why am I so fated to end up at police stations in this life?’
Gu Shengsheng felt rooted to the spot, reluctant to go.
The staff member explained, "Don’t worry, Miss Gu. The National Security Bureau just wants to ask you about something."
"Alright," she nodded.
The two of them went to a sealed room, where the staff member handed Gu Shengsheng a phone. The number on the screen was masked with pound signs.
It was clearly a private number, not the public hotline for the National Security Bureau.
Gu Shengsheng took it and heard an elderly man’s voice. "Miss Gu?"
"Speaking," she replied with a nod.
"We take what you just said about a spy very seriously. To avoid any unnecessary trouble and public panic, we wanted to speak with you in private."
Gu Shengsheng nodded furiously. "I’ll cooperate completely! I’ll tell you everything I know!"
Then, the staff member set up a projection screen, and an elderly man in a Zhongshan suit appeared on it, smiling kindly at her.
"Miss Gu, can you show us where the spy’s device is?"
Gu Shengsheng looked down. The tools and the anonymous three-faced figure from Black Africa were already on the table.
Gu Shengsheng first asked cautiously, "Am I allowed to damage the artifact?"
"You may," he nodded. His voice had a reassuring quality.
In that case, Gu Shengsheng didn’t hold back.
She picked up a hammer in each hand and started hammering away at the artifact.
She didn’t even need any help. She was incredibly strong and knew just where to find the stress points, which startled the elderly man on the screen.
’The young woman who was so gentle and reserved just a moment ago is suddenly so violent...’
Then, from the very center of the three-faced statue, Gu Shengsheng retrieved a tiny, tiny ring.
She said, "This is it. It looks a bit like the little ball from the tip of a ballpoint pen, but it’s actually a listening device."
"It probably hasn’t been activated yet. This batch of artifacts must have also just recently found its way into Huaxia."
Gu Shengsheng looked around, about to ask who she should give it to.
The staff member reappeared.
He came in holding a laptop and some kind of unknown instrument.
Gu Shengsheng was surprised. "Testing it on the spot?"
’I’d thought this staff member was with the appraisal competition, but now it seemed that was just a disguise...’
’How terrifying. Good thing I’m just an ordinary, beautiful woman who loves Huaxia.’
She couldn’t make out the strings of numbers on his laptop, but she heard him finally say, "It’s a listening device. A high-precision listening device."
Although Gu Shengsheng had expected as much, she was still seeing this kind of efficiency for the first time—to be able to identify it as a high-precision listening device and even determine its model number so quickly.
She was stunned for a moment, then said, "I’ll let you guys get to it, then. Should I head out now?"
"Don’t worry, I won’t tell anyone about this!" she swore, looking as if her lips were sealed.
The elderly man chuckled. "We trust you, Miss Gu. After monitoring your livestream for so long, we have faith in your character."
"I believe we’ll have more opportunities to cooperate in the future."
Hearing this, Gu Shengsheng felt an urge to bow or salute, but not knowing what to do, she just left in a fluster.
When she sat back down in her seat, she still felt like she hadn’t fully come back to her senses.
She came to and was about to drink a cup of hot water when she turned and saw three old faces staring at her.
Zhang Sanwang, Li Bai, and Director Gao Liu.
Gu Shengsheng: "...Seriously, what is wrong with you guys?"
Zhang Sanwang looked at her. "Where did you go? A staff member said you went to the restroom. You look like you’ve seen a ghost."
Li Bai: "Why are you in this state after winning? You look like you took a beating and lost your soul."
Gao Liu said proudly, "Miss Gu, you’re the hope of our Beijing City! The three of us all lost in the first round. A total disaster!"
Gu Shengsheng calmed her racing heart. "It’s nothing. I was just too excited about winning. When I get excited, I go blank." She was just making stuff up.
Zhang Sanwang stared at her, affecting an interrogating tone. "Tell me! Are you some kind of international spy?"
"There are so, so many carvings from Black Africa. For you to be able to identify it so easily, and even know the specific year and its purpose... You’re terrifying. Even I didn’t know..."
"And what you said at the end got the livestream shut down. You know about spy stuff too?"
"Is that what you do for a living?"
Gu Shengsheng broke out in a cold sweat. "If I really did that for a living, would I dare to host a livestream? Would I dare to stroll through an antique market in broad daylight? Wouldn’t I be out gathering intelligence every day?"
Zhang Sanwang couldn’t stop laughing. "I’m just teasing you, you little rascal!"
"But you were a bit out of line this time. It’s enough to just appraise the item. Why make wild guesses about other things? You’re a streamer; you can’t just say whatever you want."
"Okay, okay, I’ll be more careful in the future. Thanks, my dear middle-aged friends!"
Being in this line of work, Gu Shengsheng was destined not to have many friends her own age, only these middle-aged and elderly ones.
But luckily, she could still chat with Yang Jiao and Lu Linlin in their group chat, go shopping, and eat hot pot. Only then could she feel like she was still a young woman...
"The next round starts tomorrow. The first round ended pretty early today, so the drawing will probably be later tonight. Shengsheng, that Mr. Qiu Xiaojun from Xiangjiang, and that Zhang Rulan, they both advanced easily."
"There are only eight people in the next round, so your chances of drawing them are much higher."
Gu Shengsheng: "..."
"I hope I don’t draw them. I already went up against Cai Pingfan in the last round, and now so many people are grateful to me for eliminating him."
"I was just lucky. I probably won’t be so lucky in the next round."
