The Real Heiress Has an Appraisal System

Chapter 115: The Final Round, Facing the Xiangjiang Big Shot (2)

Gu Shengsheng herself wasn’t sure what it was. There were far too many things that resembled amber.

But there was no way this thing was amber.

If it were something that could be identified at a glance, what would be the point of saving it for the final round?

The four Treasure Appraisers present had all worked their way up.

So naturally, none of them dared to make a rash judgment.

The first Treasure Appraiser to examine the artifact was very nervous. He wanted to admit he couldn’t identify it, but with three others still to go, he hesitated. ’If one of them figures it out, I’m completely out of the running, aren’t I?’

As his inner anxiety grew, punctuated by the ticking of the clock, he became increasingly agitated.

An hour later, having figured nothing out, he said, "I’m sorry. I don’t know."

The second Treasure Appraiser examined it for about half an hour before writing his result on a piece of paper.

"I’m finished," he said.

A staff member then collected his paper, and the others continued.

It was Gu Shengsheng’s turn.

She touched it, but the System didn’t react. It remained dead quiet. This meant the object had nothing to do with the items the System could identify; it definitely wasn’t amber.

She then tested it with a small instrument from her bag. Afterward, she too took out a piece of paper and wrote down her answer.

The man who had failed to produce a result was furious. ’Didn’t this Gu Shengsheng uselessly waste an entire day yesterday?’

’How is she so fast today? I was counting on her to at least finish last.’

Things weren’t looking so optimistic anymore.

When it was the turn of the expert from Xiangjiang, Qiu Xiaojun, he, even more impressively, wrote down his answer without a second glance.

Gu Shengsheng was inwardly impressed. ’Truly the poise of a champion.’

Gu Shengsheng felt that just by competing alongside such an esteemed senior, she had already won. Winning or losing was no longer important; the most crucial thing was the knowledge she could gain.

While it’s a teacher’s duty to impart wisdom and clear up doubts, having them as an opponent made for much faster progress. It also clearly highlighted her own shortcomings and weaknesses.

The first appraiser’s face was now bright red. Without even looking at the artifact again, he scribbled an answer on his paper and handed it to the staff member.

He even tried to explain, "My apologies. I was so absorbed in the appraisal that I forgot to write down my result."

After saying this, he let out a private sigh of relief. He thought he was saving face, but in reality, no one was paying any attention to him or his behavior at all.

He was only making things harder for himself.

After collecting the answers from all four contestants, the staff member smiled and announced, "Miss Gu and Mr. Qiu are correct."

"Us?" Gu Shengsheng asked.

"Your answer is the same as Mr. Qiu’s."

The first man instantly lost his composure. "Wait a minute! What on earth is this thing?! What did they guess that was so right?"

"Sir, your answer was beeswax amber. The other gentleman’s guess was rosin."

"So what? Beeswax amber and rosin are both more common in Africa and India. A lot of the items so far haven’t been from China, so why would this one be?"

Gu Shengsheng smiled and said, "It’s not just domestic. It can be found everywhere. Hundreds of millions of years ago, the earth’s strata underwent huge changes. Things like this can be found all over the globe."

"Then what do you say it is?"

"Man-made copal resin."

"Man-made copal resin."

Gu Shengsheng and Qiu Xiaojun said in unison.

Gu Shengsheng was surprised. ’I thought Mr. Qiu wasn’t one for words. Why is he explaining this to someone else?’

After they spoke, Qiu Xiaojun smiled and said, "Miss Gu, you’re quite interesting. We were on the same page."

Live stream viewers:

"’What’s copal resin? It sounds fancy, but I’ve never heard of it.’"

"’Uh... I have no idea! The internet is amazing, you really can learn new things.’"

"’I just Googled it. It says it’s younger than amber. A lot of the other characteristics are probably similar...’"

Gu Shengsheng explained as well, "Copal resin and amber are indeed very similar. However, copal resin is more sensitive to alcohol. A drop of alcohol or glacial acetic acid on its surface will make it sticky or opaque."

"That’s clearly what we have here. But it isn’t real copal resin; it’s a man-made factory product. The outer coating... is very strange."

She couldn’t put her finger on what was strange about it, but Gu Shengsheng had a feeling it wasn’t entirely natural.

"And the insect inside is even stranger. It looks a bit like... a corpse bug from an ancient tomb."

After she finished, Gu Shengsheng looked at the staff member and asked, "What did you use to make this?"

"Miss Gu, I’m just a staff member. To be honest, I have no idea." But just as he was about to declare a tie...

Cai Pingfan burst out from the contestants’ seating area!

He was clutching a bottle of Wuliangye, looking like he was ready for a fight.

"Wait," he said.

"This final round is absurd!"

"Is Gu Shengsheng just going to get away with spouting some mysterious nonsense? She said alcohol could be used to test it, so why not test it?"

"I refuse to accept this!"

With that, he snatched the artifact and prepared to act.

Gu Shengsheng hurriedly shouted, "Wait!"

But the more she told him to wait, the more eager Cai Pingfan was to test it himself. ’There must be something fishy going on!’

’The production team must be in cahoots with Gu Shengsheng! I have to expose them right now. Then I can prove I’m not a good-for-nothing and won’t bring shame to myself and Elder Geng!’

Gu Shengsheng told him to wait several times, but he wouldn’t listen!

She was frantic. "We don’t know what that insect is, and we have no idea what that outer layer is made of! Figure it out before you try to burn it!"

He held up the object, which he had now set on fire, his face a mask of derision. "See? Nothing’s wrong."

"Gu Shengsheng, stop making up excuses to fool everyone. Do you really think I’m like those fans in your live stream chat? That I’m just some brainless follower who hangs on your every word?"

Gu Shengsheng: "..." ’It’s no use! I can’t get through to him!’

Just as he was about to continue his tirade against Gu Shengsheng, he felt a sharp, stabbing pain in his neck.

The people around them gasped in alarm.

Even the master cameraman, who had been diligently capturing every shot and sound, scrambled to the back of the room.

He pointed at Cai Pingfan, his face a mask of terror. "You... you... you..."

Even Qiu Xiaojun lost his composure. Frowning, he leaned on his cane and adjusted his black-rimmed glasses. "That insect... it appears it really is a corpse bug."

It had already flown into Cai Pingfan’s body. Now, there was nothing to see.

If it weren’t for the fact that everyone was recording, they would never have believed what they were seeing.

Gu Shengsheng used a dry piece of paper to absorb the burning resin that had dripped onto the table and placed it in a petri dish.

She always carried small instruments with her. As she took them out of her small bag one by one, everyone thought it was unbelievable.

Her equipment was remarkably complete.

After taking some measurements, she jotted something down on a piece of paper. Then she said, "This resin coating is quite interesting."

She put on a pair of safety goggles and fitted disposable gloves onto her hands.
