The Real Heiress Has an Appraisal System
Chapter 119: She Is Her Own Person First, Then My WifeA father and a mother—she never had either.
A loneliness that soaked through her entire being enveloped her completely.
’Am I going to die...?’ she wondered. ’It seems like no one would care even if I did.’
Shengsheng had always been the child who never got any candy.
Fending for herself, left to live or die on her own—that seemed to be her eternal fate.
Just as she felt her consciousness begin to fade, she heard someone call her name.
It was a strange voice, yet somewhat familiar.
’Who is it?’ she thought.
But she still responded instinctively, "I’m here..."
"I’m here!" She pinched herself hard enough to draw blood, finally managing to shout loudly, "I’m here!"
"Don’t be afraid!"
Thank god, thank god she held on...
His hands gripped the doorknob, veins bulging on his arms, but it still wouldn’t budge.
A wave of frustration washed over Lu Shijing. He yanked again, and with a SNAP, the doorknob broke right off.
He could feel the growing heat. The fire inside must be getting worse. He had no idea how she was doing.
Although the He Family surely wouldn’t dare let her die, they were more than capable of tormenting her.
Lu Shijing found an iron bar from somewhere, jammed it into the hollow where the doorknob had been, and pulled with all his might!
Three minutes... Finally, the door began to warp.
Gu Shengsheng stared hazily at the door. ’So, I am worth saving after all,’ she thought. ’Worth... being cared for.’
The oxygen was thinning, replaced by more and more toxic fumes. She had been lying on the floor the whole time, but even pressing a piece of clothing to her nose and mouth was useless.
Just when she felt she couldn’t hold on any longer, Lu Shijing kicked the door open!
He crossed the room in a few long strides and was before her in an instant.
He shrugged off his suit jacket and threw it onto the flames surrounding Gu Shengsheng. Already a tall man at 190 cm, he now stepped over the fire with his long legs, dropped to one knee, and scooped her into his arms.
He pulled back quickly. In a matter of seconds, the jacket was reduced to ashes.
Cradling her, he headed for the exit, his voice gentle. "It’s okay now, Shengsheng."
Her mind was a chaotic mess. She was too tired, too exhausted to even lift an eyelid.
She just clutched his collar, feeling a sense of peace.
By the time Lu Shijing carried her out, Gu Shengsheng had already lost consciousness.
Chairman He appeared at the basement entrance, dragging along a bruised and swollen He Chen.
He looked at him and said, "Ryan, don’t you have any explanation for this?"
Lu Shijing sneered, carefully handing Gu Shengsheng over to Lin Kai.
He ordered, "Take the Young Madam to the hospital first, then call the old madam and Linnin over to take care of her."
"Understood." Lin Kai nodded, glanced at Lu Qi behind him, and left.
Only after Gu Shengsheng was gone did Lu Shijing turn his gaze to the white-haired old scoundrel.
"Negotiate? Are you even worthy?"
He Chen was furious! He pointed at him and shouted, "What are you so smug about!"
Chairman He frowned. "Stand down. You’re far too impatient!"
After that, Lu Shijing sat in the centermost seat of the main hall, while Chairman He and his son sat to one side.
Chairman He spoke first. "I’m not sure if I should call you Ryan, or President Lu?"
"I never expected that the famous President Lu would appear before me in such a manner."
"Whether as Ryan or President Lu, you’re a business prodigy. But today... you’ve truly surprised me."
Lu Shijing said flatly, "My success doesn’t need your approval."
"Chairman He, don’t flatter yourself."
"If you want to meddle in my affairs, you should first take a look at what a mess you’re in yourself."
As he finished speaking, Lu Qi walked over and turned on a tablet.
It was filled with images of an old woman enjoying herself on vacation abroad. The scene then cut to her suffering a sudden heart attack and being rushed to the intensive care unit.
Lu Qi said, "The old madam was having too good a time. We felt we should give her something to be unhappy about. Wouldn’t you agree, Chairman He?"
The normally calm and composed Chairman He, if not for his crippled legs, would have probably shot up to strangle Lu Shijing!
He Chen frantically made a phone call, his eyes filled with shock, disbelief, and anxiety. "My grandmother is really in the hospital! She’s in the ICU right now."
"Chairman He, I’m losing my patience," Lu Shijing said.
"Ryan, Gu Shengsheng ruined my plans and cost me so much money. I wasn’t aware of her relationship with you beforehand, so my actions weren’t wrong. I just never thought you’d go to such lengths for a good-luck charm. It’s ridiculous!"
"My woman is not an object."
"Your woman? Your woman who runs around all day making money and ruining other people’s fortunes? If she’s your wife, you should control her better in the future. Don’t let her show her face in public! I’ve never seen a wife from any prominent family who’s so unruly!"
With that, he reached for a nearby glass of red wine, but Lu Shijing snatched it and, with a CRASH, smashed it on the floor.
He said, "She is herself first, and my wife second. What she does is none of your business."
"Instead of worrying about that, you should be more concerned about your family’s old matriarch. Her health isn’t too good. It’s not always safe abroad. What if she were sent to Black Africa, or perhaps Thailand? How could she enjoy herself then?"
"You’re threatening me!" Chairman He roared.
"Yes. You’re just now figuring that out?" Lu Shijing raised an eyebrow.
"Of course, you have a choice. Your son is an eyesore. Send him to Black Africa, or it can be your old mother in the ICU."
Lu Shijing never bothered reasoning with people like this.
Giving them a taste of their own medicine was the most important principle.
Lu Qi was also enjoying this. "This is like that classic question: if your mom and your son fell into a river, who would you save?"
Seeing that his father was actually considering it, He Chen immediately dropped to his knees. "Dad! Grandma is old, she can endure hardship in Black Africa! I can’t! I still have to inherit our family’s business!"
Chairman He had been conflicted, but hearing his son speak like such a useless coward made up his mind.
He said directly, "Ah Chen, go to the company in Black Africa. Consider it a chance to gain some experience." ’I’ll just find a way to get him back later,’ he thought.
Lu Shijing clapped from the side. "As expected, Chairman He knows how to prioritize."
Chairman He looked like he was about to die from anger, but he still spoke placatingly, "What else do you want me to do? Can the He Family’s business with RG continue?"
The majority of the He Group’s business came from its partnership with the RG Group, amounting to a monthly turnover of seven to eight hundred million. He couldn’t bear to give that up.
Lu Shijing said, "No."
Then he stood up and walked to the door with Lu Qi.
He paused and turned back.
"Chairman He, don’t go looking for trouble in the future."
And with that, he left.
Watching him leave, He Chen was still crying his eyes out.
Chairman He comforted him, "Just go there for a while. I’ll bring you back."
"Dad, why are you so afraid of him? Is the RG Group really that terrifying?"
"He plays in the world of Wall Street investment and holdings. There’s no telling how many people he has wrapped around his little finger. A man like that is unfathomable."
"And all those major corporations that have collapsed recently? Do you really think it’s all a coincidence?"
Chairman He sighed. "I was too reckless this time. Who could have imagined that a worthless girl like her would have any connection to him?"
"You’d better behave from now on. Otherwise, you’ll end up like your grandmother, with your life and death in someone else’s hands!"
