The Real Heiress Has an Appraisal System
Chapter 76: A Driver and a Fraudster, Partners in Crime"Not being able to find your daughter is an impasse. As long as she’s missing, you’ll keep tormenting yourself."
"Your son has never blamed you. He was the one who asked me to help find your daughter."
"The only thing he and I ever talked about was your daughter. I’m here now because there’s finally been a breakthrough."
Seeing that Liu Li’s emotions were gradually calming and that she was unlikely to do anything drastic, Gu Shengsheng took out the dashcam. "I brought this. It’s the dashcam footage from the year your daughter went missing."
"It’s normal for you not to trust me. But I’ve called the police. We can cooperate with their investigation together."
"No... They won’t find her. They’ll never find her. I’ve gotten my hopes up too many times..." She squatted on the ground, clutching her head as a headache began to set in.
Gu Shengsheng placed a hand on her wrist. "It’s okay. Let’s just try again... Give yourself one more chance. Give everyone one more chance, okay?"
She could sense that Liu Li’s mental state was already extremely fragile; her words could only offer a temporary reprieve.
"This dashcam needs power to work. Chen Yufan, bring me your family’s toolbox. It’d be best if you can find a neutral and a ground wire."
"We have one in a box at home!" Chen Yufan wiped away his tears and scrambled off.
Watching his all-too-practiced reaction, Gu Shengsheng’s heart ached for him. He was so used to wiping away his tears and getting things done, with no time to heal his own emotional wounds.
Ten minutes later, Gu Shengsheng had the dashcam wired up just as the police arrived.
Zhang Lianqing looked at Gu Shengsheng and said, "Miss Gu, we meet again."
"I wonder how many more times we’ll see each other. We’re practically regulars."
"..." Gu Shengsheng gave an awkward laugh. "I hope we don’t have to meet again in the future."
’Meeting other people is a good thing, but meeting Zhang Lianqing? What if I end up in handcuffs next time?’
Chen Yufan looked at Gu Shengsheng. "Sister Gu, can we watch the video now?"
Gu Shengsheng glanced at Zhang Lianqing, who said, "Play it!"
Though Liu Li stood silently in the back, her eyes were glued to the screen.
Gu Shengsheng started the video.
The footage, from over a decade ago, began with a violent shake, followed by a long stretch of black screen.
The picture was gone, but there were rustling sounds. The two children’s bright, crisp voices were gone, replaced only by a little girl’s whimpering.
Then came the driver’s muttering. "Don’t blame me. That condescending bitch Liu Li... I’ll sell her son! Let’s see what she does then!"
"Don’t you go blaming me."
After he spoke, the video shook violently again, as if someone was smashing it.
The driver grumbled, "This damn dashcam... I haven’t even deleted the recording, and it’s already broken!"
"Whatever. Heaven is on my side."
...
A moment later, perhaps because the driver had struck the display a couple of times, the picture returned for Gu Shengsheng and the others.
Two children were in the back seat, leaning against each other. The little boy was unconscious, while the little girl was still crying, her mouth gagged so she couldn’t make a sound.
Only large teardrops could be seen rolling down her face.
The driver, who had always appeared kind and sincere around the children, now had eyes full of depravity and greed. The sight was utterly nauseating.
The little girl had been awake the whole time. Normally rosy-cheeked, she was now using her small hands to desperately push forward.
The driver drove toward a remote area. "Little miss, don’t even think about it. You might live, but your brother is the apple of your family’s eye. I hear he’s supposed to inherit your grandfather’s company. No matter what, I’m selling him to my contacts in Myanmar. We’ve already made the deal!"
"As for you... a child bride for my son?" The driver brightened at the thought. "Liu Li’s precious daughter as my son’s little wife. Ah, life is truly good!"
Seeing the little girl continuously struggling, the driver grew annoyed.
"You! Settle down! I’ve been bowing and scraping in your house for so many years just for this day. I’m not letting either of you go!"
After saying that, he tore the gag from the little girl’s mouth.
The little girl didn’t cry. Only the tip of her nose was red.
She said, "Uncle Driver, my brother and I always thought of you as family. Why are you doing this to us?"
"Is my brother going to die?" she asked, heartbroken.
"That’s right! You two were very good to me, and I was genuinely good to you. But your mother is such an arrogant woman! That day, I was driving for your family. I just asked her to wait a little while, but she refused."
"My wife was at home having a difficult birth—with our son—and she died! Just like that! The baby died in her womb! She became a hen who couldn’t lay eggs, and then she was gone! If not for that, I’d have two sons!"
"If you have to blame someone, blame your own wonderful mother!"
The little girl was dazed and confused, only able to apologize over and over. "I’m sorry, I’m sorry... Please let us go. Don’t sell my brother, okay? Waaaah... I’m begging you, Uncle."
The driver found her annoying. "Shut up! Stop bothering me."
With that, he simply knocked her unconscious with a blow from his hand.
...
The video wasn’t finished, but Liu Li was already huddled in a corner, her face twisted in agony, her arms wrapped tightly around herself.
"I didn’t know! I didn’t know about any of this. I never hurt anyone."
"I never meant to harm anyone... His wife was giving birth, I didn’t know... I don’t remember it..."
She was terrified, hugging herself tighter.
Zhang Lianqing signaled two colleagues to go over and watch her. They couldn’t risk her having a breakdown from the shock.
Gu Shengsheng checked the location share Yang Jiao had sent. She was bringing a psychiatrist and would arrive soon, in about five minutes.
Gu Shengsheng then turned to Chen Yufan and asked patiently, "Do you want to keep watching? Or should we wait?"
"No, let’s continue, Sister Gu." He took a moment to compose himself. "Look, my sister tried so hard... she was thinking of me. How can I be afraid of our ending?"
He had been through so much over the years, but seeing the image of his soft, small sister on the screen, he felt himself starting to break.
All his feigned composure, his numb attitude—it all vanished in that instant...
’I want... I want my sister to be alive so badly.’
Gu Shengsheng pressed play, and the video continued.
The driver in the video brought the two children to a riverbank near Beijing City.
He pulled the two children out of the car. A man in a floral shirt with a full-sleeve tattoo stood there smoking.
The man looked at the children with disdain. "These two little runts? What can they do?"
"Even for telecom scams, we need strong, able-bodied youths. These ones are too small."
"We don’t want them."
Hearing this, the driver grew anxious.
"We’re selling the boy. This little boy is the grandson of the Liu Group. His mother is a tycoon’s daughter, super rich."
